In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Pushit by Tool. This was my first time hearing this song, and (as usual with Tool) I was really impressed with their intensity, musicality, earthy rhythms, and commitment to their craft. The lyrical meaning in this song reminds me of some others from Maynard. Join me as we dive into this deep track!

The version of this song on the "Salival" EP was probably one of the best performances Tool has ever done.
For my money, it's even better than the studio version. Otherworldly.
It's special.
The Salival version has that sick bass note drop after Adams guitar solo that the studio version lacks.
I was literally just listening to Pushit Live on the way home and thinking "this is easily one of the top five things theyve ever recorded"
I cant think of another song by any band that build tension as well as that. It gradually changes from tender to tenderized over the course of the whole song and you cant quite put your finger on when it changes because they masterfully build layers and intensity. Adam and Dannys dynamics are completely off the charts in this one.
@@unwantedscrub absolutely 100% correct. It creates that "gap." They start grinding against each other again, adding to the feeling of the lyrics.
"There's no love in fear" is my favorite Tool lyric
yea to me theres three lyrics that really stand out in this song and thats one of them. The others being "I'm alive when you're touching me
Alive when you're shoving me down", and "Remember I will always love you
As I claw your fucking throat away"
those three moments are so intense.
I always thought it was "there's no love in this"
It's a close second for me right behind " I will work to elevate you, just enough to bring you down"
@@JungleScene I love "if I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay", it's very poetic in the way it's said. I can also relate strongly to "I'd trade it all, for a peace of mind".
My wife (girlfriend at the time) said, “I didn’t know Tool wrote music like this!” when I had her listen to the Saliva version.
One of the most addictive features of Tool for me is how Maynard uses the lyrics and his voice as an instrument equal to the others in the band. It's only "front and center" when it's necessary. Aenima with headphones and a bowl was my introduction to Tool and, as is so common, I fell in.
You often mention that it's interesting what backing music Tool decides to support their lyrics, but I believe their creation process is usually to create the drums/guitar/bass, and then bring it to Maynard to interpret and create vocals and lyrical ideas.

I've been a fan since, 94ish, and this song, Pushit, is by far my favorite of theirs. I know everyone loves the Salival version, and it's great, but the album version got me through my darkest of days. This song was a glimpse into what they would go on to become. It has EVERYTHING that makes TOOL, TOOL. Complete masterpiece.
It's an epic song. I remember going to Sam Goody, I already had unterdtow. He told me that Aenima was different, but still very good. I bought it. That album changed my concept of what can be achieved with music.
I love and prefer this version too. It is soo powerful. Been a Tool fan since about 92ish, and have an Aenima eye tattooed on my inner right bicep. Their albums have been literally a soundtrack to my whole life and will continue to be!
Seriously, the Salival version of this song is so different and much more intense... would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on that.

Understand something, breaking away from the significant other that causes you pain that you’re obsessed with is the absolute hardest thing you’ll ever do in your life. I don’t care what your career is I don’t care what your ambitions are none of that matters. Realizing the damage you’re doing to yourself and having the courage to break away from it is the ultimate boss.
You'll love the live version of this song. They took it somewhere REALLY vulnerable.

I don't get how people can write songs like this. EVERYTHING is just perfect and so creative. I love Adam's textural guitar accents and squeals and super subtle licks during the quite middle section. And I love how Danny will include those single cymbal bell "dings" during the hihat patterns in the latter half of the song. *Definitely listen to the "Salival" version of this song. It's even better imo*
They're literally on another plane of existence.
A lot of what musicians do isn't written its added after a song is written and practiced. Good musicians add their own flair. Songs are usually pretty basic when first written. After playing and practicing over and over tada you got a song
Experienced musicians understand that creativity is a snowball effect. Chipping, tinkering, adding until it feels complete. I've never had a great situation with a band where everyone is throwing their own creativity into the pile. I had one experience that came close. But then we got Yoko'd. Fkng Yoko's ruin everything.
Tool was all about soundscape angst through my High School years. I couldn't get enough at the time.
Best TOOL song ever.! Toolsday is a good title there.
Tool has the affinity of having deep and intense song subject matter.
This song talks about his experiences with being abused as a child and how his parents claimed to love him yet abused him. Hence the last phrase in the song, "Remember I will always love you, as I claw your f--king throat away. It will end no other way, it will end no other way." In the first verse he says, "Choke this infant here before me" - here he is
referring to himself as the infant and suffering from neglect and abuse. Throughout the song, he describes how he would like to take revenge on his parents and strike back, but was afraid for fear of continued abuse. yea definitely got a zeppelin vide from the live version. The way the song builds is akin to stairway to heaven. not saying it sounds like stairway, but structurally and dynamically it draws parallels.
Also in the record they have the no quarter cover, so the led zep influence is there ❤️
When this started, I'd already planned on suggesting you give a listen to the reworked live version from Salival. If only for the comparison of the difference in the two versions.

Thank you JJ for recommending this track! Great reaction, Doug. This is my favorite TooL album, by far. A lot of the album deals with interpersonal relationships, and Maynard was still working out his demons on this album. There are a LOT if intense emotions that he touches on, and specifically the tracks Jimmy, H., Eulogy and this one. You can't go wrong with anything off AEnima, man. It's darker and angrier than Lateralus, but unbelievably emotional at the same time. Masterpiece. Thanks again! 🤘

I love how you break down not only the music from a technical perspective, but you also incorporate the overall pathos and ethos into your analysis. You are holistically experiencing each key change, timing change, lyrical implication, cadence, etc. the way that I envision we are MEANT to.
It's this complexity and intensity that allows me to listen to different works from Tool (or APC) at different times in different places and receive DIFFERENT meanings from each encounter. Watching you 'get it' makes me SO HAPPY.

Gotta say you were properly impressed by Tool, I thank you for breaking down the time signatures and key changes etc. I've been a TOOL fan since Sober first got played on Mtv's Headbangers Ball. My favorite Tool album. I think Lateralus is probably their best record, but Aenima was my introduction to them back when it released and holds that special place in my heart.

Casting yet another vote for the Salival version while this one is still fresh in memory. It's truly incredible how they were able to turn this song on it's head but still emphasize the meaning and keeping it recognizable.
As per probably everyone else's comments to come... The live version of this song on 'Salival' is worth a spin. It is, for me, the best example of tool's process of healing through it's music.
Boy, I certainly hope Salival version is next on the list now.

It's so good hearing a classical composer's opinion and observations on any kind of music.
This is probably my favorite Tool song, ever, and I've been listening to them literally since the first EP. It's very very definitely about a toxic relationship. The person in the song *knows* that the relationship is terrible for them, but the other person has kept pulling them back in. I have always viewed the song as being a descent into a kind of madness as they can see themselves getting pushed back into the relationship once more. Notice the off-center buzzing at the beginning, as the starting maddening whine, as it were. Then the song gets more and more chaotic all the way though that instrumental passage about 2/3 of the way through. Then, they apparently reach a moment of clarity, where they have resolved, no matter what it costs, that they will *not* go back into that relationship, on pain of death, possibly literal.
Great reaction. Love seeing the music hit you. Listen again through the lyrics only. It’s such a DEEP song. Almost bring one to tears. I understand you were focused mostly on the music, rightfully so. This band has so many levels. Spirals.

I'm in my mid-fifties and just started listening to TOOL. I'm not really into metal but this stuff is really interesting, complex and well played. Some of the underlying sound effects intrigue me. Great stuff.

Love your analysis of the TOOL songs. You gained a subscription from me. I played drums/percussion for 11 years and the stuff Danny Carey does on percussion is just mesmerizing to me. Enjoy your breakdown of the different time signatures as they change within the songs.

I love your interpretation of the lyrics because I have lived that in some way, though not to that level of destructive intensity. It was my first time listening to the song too but I don't have the lyrics in front of me so your insight was very welcome. In terms of the music, I don't understand the pitch or key changes the way you do but I found it to be haunting, in a good way. They wouldn't be the type of music I'd normally listen to but they keep me hooked to a song when I do. I'm more into proper (if conventional isn't the word) guitar solos but what the guitarist does here in the instrumental part of the song is just enough to keep me satisfied in that regard. Your enthusiasm is as much why I was entertained by this as the song itself. Great song choice, great video.

G’day Doug, love your work, the highlight of my day. I’m cool for Tool and your analysis deepens my appreciation. Being an old fart I find your examinations of prog masterpieces a trip of the best kind, it is great to revisit those seminal works in your company.
I humbly provide a couple of suggestions in line with your coverage of Tool.
First you have not, as far as I know, covered any Australian artists. Let me tell you, we have some extraordinary talent on our continent. One group that has a similar sensibility to Tool is Karnivool. They do long and short form but as a taster “Change” from their “Sound Awake” album is an amazing track, I feel confident you would find some musical joy there.
On a different level, knowing you are keen on well written and expressive vocals, I would love to hear your take on “The The” a Brit artist/band, and as a starter I offer up “Sweet Bird of Truth” which hails from the almost perfect 1986 album “Infected”. The whole album feels like it could have been written yesterday and the lyrics are cutting, clever and have a rare insight that is probably closer to our current point in time than when written. Oh and the music is incredible including some percussion that would do Danny from Tool proud.

There was a fan made video of pushit with some european (polish?) animated movie "Dym" placed on the music. Unfortunately got removed after tool went streaming themselves. That video quite a special experience of pushit

Hey, I really love your channel. Your videos are amazing! I'm quiete young (17), but love listening to music and playing guitar and orchestral percussion. Since your video are many (i haven't had time to see them all, sorry) I don't know if you've listened to Area yet. They are a phenomenal band from Italy (my country), but really really underrated. If I were you, i would listen to "Crac!" or "Caution Radiation Area", but all of their works are amazing! Demetrio Stratos is one of the most underappreciated voice of all time. Their strange scales used with odd rhythms, and political concerned political themes make them one of the best band ever! If you read this message, that between all the other is very difficult to catch, and liked them, please try "cantare la voce" of Demetrio Stratos, in which he demonstrates all the difficult techniques he was able to. I also apologize for my very bad English, my language skills are not very good! Thank you

Tool is very intense for having a slower tempo. Sets them apart.
Maynard introduced this song like this in 96......"have you ever had someone love you so much you had to kill them to get away?.......................me either"
it's interesting how you can combine the distinct skills of relative pitch and absolute pitch in your analysis. I'm going to dub your skill set as "imperfect pitch" lol. you're able to recognize absolute pitch, but as you said, you can be fooled or be off at times. Anyway, people with true perfect pitch often can't hear things in relative terms. They hear pitches first and then mathematically deduce the relationship to the tonic or whatever. in contrast, people with really developed relative pitch can hear the relationship, but only know the absolute pitch after deriving it from the relationship to the already identified tonic. you seem to be able to do both, and rely more on one or the other depending on the situation. for example, you said in this video "that's a flat 6, which means that if they're in D then it must be a Bb." whereas in the atom heart mother video you said "that definitely sounds like an e flat minor chord, but how the hell did they end up there?" I have a suspicion that your absolute pitch recognition centers around the tonal qualities that certain pitches have, like an F# would sound like "weer" and an e flat would sound like "wah". like recognizing syllables of spoken word. i'm starting to develop that myself but i don't know to what extent i can take it. I can reliably recognize and reproduce an F natural for example, because in my mind it makes the "Ha" sound, which I then compare it to the recollection of that same sound as played on my particular instrument, in this case the guitar. TLDR im a nerd and your channel is great.
For second I thought we were talking "Perfect Pitch" in the Cosmere, but I realized we aren't actually on Roshar. And I got sad because my boy Vasher didn't have to rope somebody. (one person will get this, hopefully)
