In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Right in Two by Tool. This song has a great earthy groove, but the lyrics are profound! I really enjoyed this one.

Right in Two - one of the greatest yet most underrated Tool tracks
probably my favorite tool song
It was the song that got me into Tool. I remember hearing Parabola and not liking it at first. I heard Right in Two a couple years later, and for whatever reason it stuck with me.
Pink Floyd will always be my favorite band (I absolutely adore DSotM, Meddle, and WYWH), but Tool is easily my favorite "modern" band.
I use it a lot as an introduction to Tool for people who have never heard them, it's one of their more digestible, easy listening songs in terms of musical structure and what not. Some people just aren't ready for the 5+ minutes of highly technical instrumentation and existential lyrics
I think no Tool song is really underrated.
Very underrated
It's in 11/4, because 5/4+6/4 is splitting it Right In Two.
Haha underrated comment
That's the idea of the song. It's Tool there's nothing accidental
11 is also said to mean, at least in a biblical sense, imperfection. Disorder. and Chaos. The 1 and 1 in 11 are also divided. There is division or space between 1 and 1. 2 is split into the 1+1. The ones oppose each other trying to be THE 1 not realizing they are part of the whole that creates the the 2. 2 being the number of harmony and love. It all comes full circle. Layers upon layers.
@@prophecygg5826 Wow
Kind of the same idea in Schism, only there the two meters got merged at the end, because, you know... the pieces fit? :D
You and Key of Geebz need to collaborate and react to a Tool track, the input and conversation from both of your musical perspectives may just break the internet!
Yes yes YESSS
yes yes
Yessir! I second that!
Inspired comment. Who knew that was the collaboration we all needed to bring world peace?
I'd actually cry
The lyrics of this song are one of the best from Tool
Agreed. But I always heard the ending as: "Angels on the sideline again, BENCHED along with patience and reason..." I mean, to me it fits better with the sideline reference, but I also hear "been so long..." I guess it doesn't matter, I'm probably just splitting hairs...
It's one of their most straight forward, and easiest to understand lyrically.
It's great.. others 'Hooker with a Penis' 'Eulogy' 'Schism' 'Aenima' I love the chorus of Prison Sex
For sure!
absolutely. which says alot
"Wings for Marie" and "10,000 Days", done together, would be an EPIC reaction from you.
Would love to see Doug's reaction on that pair.
I can't decide whether I'd rather hear Pushit (salival) or that. Why not both?
Get on this Doug, it will be a long one - but you will get the engagement, guaranteed. Not least of all, you will love it!
@@benthrasher9739 pushit. The live version.
Plus include Judith from Perfect Circle to complete the trilogy
Iron Maiden is to E minor as Tool is to D minor
#notwrong
Drop (tune) that D and let’s play some Tool 👊🏼💯
@@JustinOhio Enjoy his drumming overall and makes me want to learn new shit so works out great tbh. And I only play guitar so it helps with my rhythm too
@@JustinOhio this is incredibly incorrect
@@JustinOhio setting Dm to their sound is a common concept that all artists do. It’s their sound that they perfected
I honestly am waiting for you to do a proper analysis of TOOL's "Invincible". And that means an analysis about the harmonies, the chords, the tempo, the structure, the engineering, the sound, the feeling,... everything. Go for it! Cheers!
Invincible for sure. Such an amazing song end to end. Looking forward to itt as well. Onward and Upward!
Or Decending
Wow you two! Those are my 2 favorite songs on Fear Innoculum; Invincible and Descending... Along with Pneuma, Tempest, Culling Voices, and the album titled track. I've been spinning Fear Innoculum virtual non-stop since last August! And this track from 10,000 Days is my favorite on that album (along with about 5 others.) I've been following Tool since the very beginning and they just keep getting better and better! Personally, Tool is my favorite band of all time. Dream Theater is second... Can you say John Petrucci!? Do a review of Metropolis Part 1 on the Images and Words album by Dream Theater! Thanks!
Right In Two and Invincible really speak to me. So much so that I gave this a shot: TOOL - Invincible cover - One-man band with Chapman Stick
Now seriously thinking about Right in Two as well.
I think Invincible speaks to many of us longtime Tool fans for pretty obvious reasons. We are getting old. Many of us can't do everything we used to but we still try. On a side note - I wonder if they still teach kids about Ponce De Leon and his search for the "Fountain of Youth". I ask because i wonder how many younger folk get that part of the song. Anyway...I digress. Its a fantastic song and a great idea for a reaction.
One of my favorite lyrics of all time, "Repugnant is the creature who will squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven councious of his fleeting time here."
I've always liked the satiric poetry of this song's lyrics. I think my fav is: "silly monkeys. Give them thumbs. They make a club to beat their brother down." It all hits pretty close to home. Great songs usually do.
@@brentwalker5726 Sharks don't have thumbs and they sometimes eat sperm when they eat humans because some humans are males and they carry sperm. I assume it's coincidental but I have never asked a shark if the ultimate point of it all is to eat sperm or whether or not sharks know if it's only males that might carry sperm. Perhaps they need to be educated so to save some women.
I absolutely LOVE this song so much. How the Angels go from being puzzled and amused to baffled and confused, to eventually acknowledging they've been benched along with patience and reason. As if humanity no longer cares for any of them. They become increasingly disgusted with humanity and at first finding us humorous changing to repugnant. Then we hit "The Riff" that I believe is supposed to represent a rapture of sorts for humanity, after we've destroyed ourselves. Leaving us with Maynard's last, almost subtle cry, of "Right in Two" as the last of humanity phases out.
It's not the most accurate interpretation, but damn if this song isn't strong.
I've always loved how huge the mix on this album was.
Same.
I love the STANK FACE he makes when the hard heavy riffs hit!! 🤟🏽😈🤟🏽
The one thing you’ll hear over and over again from us tool fans: you don’t listen to tool; you EXPERIENCE tool!
Doug showed Snake Plissken how to escape from New York and LA.
I love this! I wonder how many people understand this reference lmao
@@stickyicky2120 evidently only 29 of them my friend. Thank you I take pride in my compliments.
8:24 is one the heaviest parts in all of metal (or whatever you wanna call it). Absolutely encapsulating
Nah you're on the money bro it's straight up heavy 🤘
as a Tool fan from the beginning in 93.. i have said since this album came out.. that has to be the most powerful line i ever heard in a song “repugnant is a creator who would squandor the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here”
Maynards voice is so tonally perfect. Blows my mind.
When Fear Inoculum got out I hated it so much. I was so disappointed...
But I came back to it a year later and BOOOOOM!! It's a masterpiece. I was wrong. Tool was right. 🤷♂️
It's funny how that works, isn't it? I only liked "Descending" and "7empest" for the first week or so, but then slowly I just started listening through the whole thing in single sittings and now I can't honestly point to a weakest track.
Omg I feel the same way!!! I thought it was generic shit but now I think it’s a complete masterpiece
Pneuma is a top 5 tool song of all time
That is called "getting old". New stuff just doesn't get in as "good" as quickly as with a kid.
So happy to hear Tool on your channel again!
Any time Danny just starts casually tapping away on the polyrhythms just take a deep breath. He’s getting ready to bring the rain!
Couldn't be happier with this video, so well timed as I can't stop listening/playing to this song atm!
Thanks for this video man, I really enjoyed it
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Simply a masterpiece!
Bravo Doug! Absolutely love your Tool reactions and insight! Keep them coming!
This was such a surprise for me the first time I saw them live. I’d heard the album and gravitated to the ‘hits’ from this one but when I heard this one live in Vancouver, it was the highlight of the night. Absolutely blew me away. Such an intellectual song.
One of my absolute favorite lyrics from any song ever. It is such a treat to watch your reaction to especially Tool. Makes me enjoy this song that much more to watch and listen to how impresses by this song you are. Thanks man.
A very interesting and valued perspective on a remarkable band, was impressed to see you analyze the meter and chord progression so effortlessly, obviously of a master of the trade. More Tool reacts please!
I always love listening to this song. Your reaction to this one was super enjoyable to watch. Thank you.
Extremely deep song and music. Love these guys.
Amazing Analysis! I love that lyric “Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of its fleeting time here”. The way I see it with that particular lyric is that I don’t take Maynard for a ‘god-fearing’ kinda guy. We can still gaze up and gasp at the magnificence of the heavens above us…without being blindly burdened with the baggage of ancient mythology.
I always understood that line to mean that by gazing at the grand scale of the universe, we can see how insignificant we are, and how short our "time here" is. so instead of making the best of our time here, we squander it fighting and killing each other over trivial things.
@@killdozer3464 nailed it. The way I see them, this along with most Tool songs are about awakening your connectedness to your natural life, and disconnecting yourself from the manufactured societal structures and distractions of the modern world. Being aware that you're in a body that will die and return to some other form of matter, and using your gift of consciousness to root yourself in the beauty and the randomness that is the human experience.
Loved it! Keep 'em coming!
Love the technical breakdown the open mind scanning with mathematical appreciation- received with this keen dynamic ear. Its awakening. Word Up. Amazing is Right.
Always loved Tool's time signatures in their songs!
Congrats on the curtains and LET'S GOOOO
Yeah those are definitely tablas, they're features pretty heavily on their newest album too.
There used to be a video of this song linked to a short movie called The Gloaming that fit perfectly. It disappears and reappears from time to time.
Great take. Tool is so good. Looking forward to more Tool in the future.
One of my favorite moments of symbolism meeting composition meeting theme is the crushing alternating octaves they land on as the cathartic release at the end of the track. Adam and Justin are literally cutting their fretboards right in two.
I have loved Tool since their first album and your analysis has opened my eyes even more and love of Tool. THANK YOU!!! I love your knowledge and reactions
Check out Maynards other band A Perfect Circle, songs like 3 Libras and Magdalena.
Or Judith
Or Gravity, the Outsider
This could be one of the best decantations of this most beautiful song. Possibly the best. What an energetic & powerful expression of the existential angst we all live with in current times.
This was excellent!
More Tool reactions, mate! Cheers!
Great choice, Doug!! And congrats on the new space. ;)
I enjoy your videos, thanks! 😊
I love watching reaction videos to songs I love, especially from a musically educated perspective as this gentleman has, and seeing him react the same way. With childlike admiration, regardless of education. Some music just speaks to the soul. This man's reaction made this song even better! Thank you for taking the time and giving this song and band a chance. Only problem. Every Tool song..., is better than every other Tool song! Lol. Enjoy!
When he said " Somethings coming!" to the camera I was like YEAH BUDDY! xD
Stunning analysis. Thank you.
I love how he knows everything musically before it happens. "5/4 with crescendoing tempo into an ascending syncopated chromatic diatonic with 5th's" I'm like what he say ... lol 🤣
This one is fabulous to dance along to, try it. Tool are rapidly becoming one of my favourite bands, thank you for the introduction DD community.
I love when people can show me new things about my fav band. Thank you🤙
Congrats on the new place! Doug, As a classical composer you owe it to yourself and to your listeners to listen to a classical album by the band Camel "The Snow Goose" from 1975 and re-recorded in 2013 no vocals and it's one long song!
A masterpiece! And it needs to be a one sitting listen.
Moonmadness would get my vote as well, though that's not got any orchestral parts - just a great prog album.
@@QuirqUK hell yes, Moonmadness is wonderful.
Love your dedikation!
Your take on this is amazing! Thanks man; subscribes for sure
May I ask for Sepultura please? Preferably something from their album Roots, a groundbreaking album mixing heavy metal and Brazilian tribal music. Ratamahatta would be a good song. And then there is always Scorpions :) Thank you!
Sails of Charon!
War For Territory
I feel if you're studying music theory and you're having a hard time with time signatures, Tool's music is the answer. The complexity they put on their rhythmic patterns is out of this world!
11/8
And yet they still somehow manage to make most their songs sound the same.
One of my all time fav song. Many Thanks!
Excellent! So unique, I love the time signature
Great video Doug. I'm a big tool fan those lyrics are some of my favorite of any of their songs, good stuff
I'm so glad that you hear it like I do. Tool is amazing and, I absolutely respect your view. Sound is beautiful.
Amazing song. Fantastic lyrics and the sound is just awesome.
I can't wait for you to just knuckle down and explore the whole catalogue, nothing disappoints.
Knuckle? Go to the elbow!
I was listening, today, Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers, 2014, memory of Jon Lord. Damn... Doug will love it!!!
I really enjoyed watching you really enjoy this.
The chugging feedback (for lack of a better description) at 7:43 gets me every time. I look forward to that one second every time I listen to this song.
So sick
Great one . Also, super cool hearing your interview on the Geologic podcast!
Nice.... I love the analogy!
Great song.. Great album
Love this tune and your review. Agree on the profound lyrics.
This is great! Lol I love seeing someone else just digging the hell out of this.
Cool stuff brother! Mind blowing how well you analyze these complex songs… Love your channel, It’s like a free music lesson…
Ive cried many times to this song, i like to take time btw listening to it, keep it fresh so i dont forget how important it is
Also I think the ending returning back to the starting sound is basically regardless of how much we blow eachother up, eventually the earth will return to how it naturally is, whether we are here to see it or not.
I am now waiting for you to react to the song that gets every one of the classical musicians and vocal coaches.
Please listen to Pantera - Cemetery Gates.
For the best experience, find a version that doesn't have the intro cut out. The official video cuts it, likely for time constraints during airplay.

Danny has a very sophisticated Tabla drum pads setup on his kit. *_You need to react to Wings For Marie(10,000 Days) Parts I & II_*
Mezmerizing to watch you analyze this criminally underrated TOOL masterpiece!
What they have done in this song sounds really chaotic but exceedingly beautiful.
For some more Prog Metal, check out Haken! (rhymes with bacon)
Falling Back to Earth
Celestial Elixer (this one's long)
Cockroach King (album ver)
1985
The Architect (another long one)
Earthrise (the most pop of their songs)
Aquarium
+1 to celestial elixer
I've also requested some of these choices on this channel. I would also recommend Visions too, which is another great long one
Really enjoy and appreciate all these videos and the quality analysis.
If I missed it apologies, but I hope it’s appreciated that the D obsession for tool is simply a practical result of Adam Jones drop D tuning.
He found a unique and amazing voice with his Drop D silverbursts that I wouldn’t change.
EDIT: Wings for Marie. Do it.
Love Danny's tabla - replicted by Mandala synth pads live.
I love how tool plays with rhythmic patterns of 2’s and 3’s. The whole song does not deviate from an 11/4- most of it following a 3-3-3-2 feel (6/4+5/4 as he puts it). That weird thing that happens in the middle that Doug struggled to count (because the change happened quickly and not for long) is still following the backbone 11/4 meter but it just changes emphasis. That part could be counted as 3-2-2-2-2 or, if following the guitar chords, would be more easily counted as 3-4-4. Sounds different but remarkably still 11/4. This is a great song and I would encourage anyone to put their headphones on and have a deep listen without any talking over the top of it because the song leading up to the build up towards the end is absolutely amazing.
Bloody hell, you're doing Tool.....Another band I really do like...Prog metal...First time I heard Tool, I thought, blimey, these fellas are worth checking out.....I've not been disappointed, apart from they release an album once every 74 years....but it's worth it.....Class band
Hey, thanks for those classical recommendations. That’s a music I have little understanding of. Might check those out
love tool!
Truly a masterpiece of music
Boy did this song age better with time... This has been one of my favorite Tool songs ever. Here in 2022 experiencing division on a new - yet familiar and at the same time - a retro scale... Maybe it's time for Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath? Feels right. Good night y'all!
I'm a fairly new Tool fan and this is the album I've connected with the least, but this helped me appreciate this one song and may be my key to appreciating the rest of it more.
not sure how many times i've been late to work because of this song but it's been a lot and more times than by boss would ever want.
Looooove this tune
Love your reactions Doug. Danny incorporates a lot of tribal elements with the percussion, in particular I love his use of replicating something like flowing water - it really hypnotises you. 10,000 Days has a lot of tracks about Maynard’s mother. If I’m correct, she lived 10,000 days before (& after) the diagnosis of her illness, so there are more lyrics inspired by that/her.
I think you’d really enjoy his interview w/ Rick Beato, bc he hardly ever speaks about Tool in general, (he’s VERY reserved), let alone his writing process (he does it after the instrumentals are mostly finished). Rick also did one more recently with Danny too. What I love is how much they’re all just as much in awe of each other’s talents as everyone else is. Less of a band, more 4x insanely talented musicians who joined forces.
Great reaction on a brilliant track!! Thanks!! ..
Great interpretation of the lyrics!
Doing is awesome. That’s all I got, Doug is awesome.
Doug, you are a true professional in this new
Song reaction genre
Nice review. Great song.
I've let myself fall into this piece, and found myself with actual tears "...squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.". We are here together, for such a short time. To always be in conflict is so very saddening.
Saw this live May 4th 2022 at Birmingham. First ever gig. 2 and a half hours was like 5 minutes. Stood there in complete silence the whole set.
10000 days has become one of my fav albums, more tool!
Congratulations on the new house.
Enjoyed your thoughts on this song.
As someone pointed out “wings for marie” & “10,000 days” back to back soon please.
I really like it that you let the track run through while analyzing.
The bass tone on this track is unbelievable. The harmonics ringing out, the chorus effects, and cutting through the mix in the louder parts. The bass makes this one for me.
Great job Doug
“She Wolf” from the “Rude Wakening” DVD is extended and over the top. Give Megadeth another shot 🤘🤘🤘.
Once in a life time band. ✌
Love Tool, more the first three albums (or five if you count the real early stuff) Iron Maiden “The Evil That Men Do” is epic, and in line with this topic 👊🏼💯 Thanks for your videos, Doug. You’re really helping me through some difficult times here with them 🙂
