  • hi guys, i couldn't add the actual video into my reaction so if you haven't seen the music video for this song, i strongly suggest you check it out. very cool. please let me know what song i should listen next.
    Thanks for watching. Lyrics below.
I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away
    Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lover's souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication
I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication
The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
    Finding beauty in the dissonance
There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow and strengthen our communication
    cold silence has
    A tendency to
    Atrophy any
    Sense of compassion
    Between supposed lovers
    Between supposed lovers
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit
    I know the pieces fit

No love for Puscifer? I *only* checked them out because of Maynard and was pleasantly hooked immediately after. There's a few songs on each album I didn't really care for, some of which grew on me. But for the most part they got some good stuff. "Dear Brother" is a good one. "Humbling River" was used on a video game Transformers WFC but is definitely a good song. "Momma Said" is good, the "Tandimonium" mix is better IMO. "Trekka" good, "Spaghetti Trekka" is good too. "Polar Bear" and "Potions" brought me close to tears when I heard them, not because they are crazy powerful, but because I felt a connection to the meaning I interpreted from them. They are both really great though. "Arsonist", "Autumn", "Apocalyptical", "The Remedy" and more. This is just a small list of a portion of my favorites, If you're new to them, check them out. I guarantee you won't be sorry you did. If you're familiar with the band, hopefully someone who isn't learns of them from this so it wasn't so pointless...😂

It is about relationships but not just a single couple but humanity with each other. We are social creatures who instinctively act cooperatively and in tribes, however with the society we have, this has broken down and we are becoming more selfish and individualistic, our communication and cooperation with each other has suffered, but if we can regain compassion for each other we can start to cooperate and rebuild. (put the pieces back together)

It is so cool to be able to watch reaction videos of someone who has a developed ear towards music actually take a chance on stepping outside of their comfort zone to try and understand what others are hearing.. it sets a great example to follow on learning how to listen, no matter where you are from or how old you are.. If you want to hear more Tool, I highly recommend 'Pneuma'..( check out the 'Danny Carey-Vic Firth' live drum cam video.. that will really blow your mind..) Another suggestion for a first viewing video would be Living Color's "Cult of Personality" - ( the official vid has an audio mix that really does the song justice.) I saw this band back in the day and was totally blown away. They opened up for a headlining act whose name I don't even remember, these guys really brought it ! (--And if you're not familiar with them yet, the real surprise is yet to come once you see the vid.) Cheers, thanks again for all the fun posts.. :-)

Brilliant reaction, so glad you finally gave tool a shot. They are a truly mind blowing band. This song has to many time signatures changes to count and many are in very strange meters. A schism is seperation or a breaking up. The song is about how when communication ceases death follows. If our brains do not communicate with our bodies we die. If we do not communicate with each other our relationship dies. This is why we must bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication. All of tool's music is brilliant, their song lateralus revolves around the fibbonaci sequence, their song 46 and 2 is jungian development of ones personal shadow and their song vicarious is about human nature and our desire to watch things suffer. They have songs about patience, forgivnes, human nature, drugs, spiritual transformation and much more. I highly recomend their song the patient, you will really like it and it has deep lyrics.

I'm so glad you took the leap into checking out this band. They're really special and completely unique. They put a lot of value on the production of their songs as if it's the fifth band member in a way. Very artful in the music as well as the lyrics with so many time changes in the rhythm but also between the individual instruments where the drummer might be in 14/4 and the bass in 7/4 and the guitarist bridging between the two. The lyricist adds a whole other layer to the sound which is why his voice is sometimes a little low in the mix. It's not about any one of them individually but rather all four of them together that gives them such a layered and complex sound. If you liked this, you're really going to like most anything off of the AEnima or Laterallus albums. 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum are really, really great as well. Try "Forty Six & 2", "Laterallus", "Right in Two" or "Descending". Keep up the great work! 😉

I've subbed for more Tool and MJK. So wonderful to find young people appreciating music like Tool, the greatest band of all time, as far as I am concerned. You are right on about the interpretation of the song. The music videos are too distracting for a first listen, actually, try to wait to watch the video until after you've heard the song a few times. I hope you continue with Tool and do their entire discography, because they literally do not have a bad song. Maynard James Keenan is the vocalist, and he is the only vocalist (they layer his voice when needed for a particular part of a song) and he also writes all the lyrics. He is a genius and widely considered to have the best voice in rock/metal. I agree. I love MJK's voice, it is one of the four pillars of Tool, along with the guitar of Adam Jones, the bass of Justin Chancellor (Paul D'Amour played in early Tool) who is the "heart" of the beat moreso than the drums. Danny Carey, the drummer, is the best living drummer. No question. He is often called "The Octopus" since it seems he has eight arms when he plays his complicated, and yes, very intelligent, drums/percussion. Maynard has two other bands that he is vocalist/lyricist for: A Perfect Circle (see songs such as "Gravity" and "Pet" and "Judith") and his personal creative outlet Puscifer (see songs such as "Potions" and "Mama Sed" and "Grand Canyon"). Do hope you continue. Stay safe!

Genius songwriting, unusual formats, and tricky changes in time signature. You also should check out Dream Theater. They are composed of insanely talented prodigies. As long as you live your life and your experience in life grows your Tool experience will always be unique. Even if it is the same song. Welcome to the fam and don't forget to spiral out.

As a fan since Undertow it can be overwhelming trying to “get it” on the first time thru with any TOOL music. In my experience I’ve usually had to listen to their new music for about 2 months before I really understand it.

Not gonna lie wasnt a big fan in the beginning but the song "SOBER" helped me come to some serious realizations about alcohol and my self and helped me begin 19 yrs of sobriety (from alcohol) then after listening to the next album I fell in love with their music and lyrics. Deep lyrics and so much more musically. Wife was in a head on collision 15 yrs ago and almost died and we lost a child our 6 month old Robert Jr. As a friend was driving me to the hospital 2 hrs away I heard this song which I wasnt as familiar with and after a very crazy and emotional few days I was home alone and decided to listen closer to the lyrics and to this day I cry every time I hear it. It has such profound and meaningful lyrics and the melody just takes you on a rollercoaster! I absolutely love them my favorite artists ever. Some other favorites is "RIGHT IN TWO", "JAMBI" and "46 & 2" loved your reaction to this amazing piece.

I'm one of those Tool fanatics, so it's tough for me to pin-point "the best" Tool. I stroooongly recommend Lateralus. Amazing polyrythmics, including having the drummer playing in a different time signature than the rest of the band at one point. It is best known for incorporating the Fibonacci sequence into the beats for some of the lyrics. The song's working title was "9-8-7" because the opening riff's time signature is 9/8 - 8/8 - 7/8. Then they realized that "987" is one of the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, and the lead singer wrote the lyrics accordingly. The Fibonacci sequence is usually depicted graphically as a spiral, and he worked that into the lyrics as well. Tool lyrics are also frequently about New Age expanding the mind sort of stuff, and that gets worked in as well. Complex but smooth polyrythms, meta-lyrics, with gradual build-up to a powerful ending... it's got everything that makes Tool, Tool.
Oh, and then do "Hooker with a Penis". Completely different, but I promise you won't regret it! :-)

Every tool song is special. But if you check out Tool’s “ H”, “intermission/Jimmy”, A Perfect Circle’s “Judith “, and Tool’s “ wings for Marie pt1/10,000 days’ all in that order, it’s a huge journey and the five stages of grief personified since those songs is about MJK’s growth as a person and his relationship with his mother from early stages to her last days. It’s a journey that’ll make you emotional.

You have quite an ear! It takes most people a few listens before they can comprehend what they just heard after hearing Tool their first time . The fact that you said this is your favorite so far says a lot. Though I don't know what other bands you've reacted to, Tool will be pretty hard to top. "Right in two" "Lateralus" and "Vicarious" are definitely a couple musts from Tool. Try Rush "2112" Dream Theater's "Stream of consciousness" and Metallica "Orion" sometime. They won't disappoint. One more thing is listen to Tools live recordings. What makes Tool so awesome is there ability to execute their songs so well live. I I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times this year before Covid hit. The last show was in Las Vegas, I went with my dad and it ended up being the last night I got to spend with him. I couldn't have asked for a better night to remember.

Danny Carey on drums is the best drummer in the world, Adam Jones masters the guitar, Justin Chancellor incredible on bass, and Maynard James Kennan vocalists and lyrics are just insanely awesome.
