I’m not sure if you or anyone else will see this, but here’s what’s going on: The song One by Metallica is based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo which is about World War 1. It describes the life of a man who goes to war and is a victim of a mortar blowing up in his face which robs him of his ability to see, hear, smell, or taste and blows his arms and legs off. He comes out of a coma while in the hospital and during his time there he reflects on his life and the things his father had told him. Eventually doctors grow worried because he keeps having spasms all the time but doesn’t seem to be dying from them. They call in the general who has no answers for the spasming but a soldier alongside the general recognizes the spasming as Morse code. The general then asks what he’s attempting to communicate and the soldier replies with “Kill me, over and over again. Kill me”. It’s about a wounded soldier who cannot see, cannot taste, cannot hear, cannot smell, and has no limbs but is very much alive and wishes for death in a constant state of regret and sorrow. A specific passage from the novel inspired the song: “How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it’s a million to one shot. But if he does win, you’ll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I’d read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn’t believe it because it’s a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. I’d never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one.” In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie and this music video uses images and monologues from that movie. It took me over two decades, but I finally managed to go see them live just last year. Best concert I’ve been to, hands down. And this song is a major staple in their performances. Happy late B-Day! One of my favorite bands also. Been listening to them since the mid 90's and finally got to see them live in Atlanta, GA in 2017. Hands down the most amazing show I've been to. The laser and sound effects when they played One were incredible. We showed up early and sat through two opening acts. When Metallica came on we were standing on the ground in front of the stage. The crowd let out a massive singular cheer. I turned around and I swear it looked like every seat in the stadium was occupied. One of the really cool things was when people shouted, screamed or cheered in unison you could feel it. Absolutely amazing. I'll never forget it. Also crowd was full of people of all ages and everyone we met was really nice.

It's for copyright that those people stop videos,alot of people don't really get big of a hurdle it is.You can stop it every three seconds,you can edit however you want, even putting fair use doesn't stop it from being blocked. Copyright is all encompassing. Your video can instantly get taken down with the bot system scanning videos or labels restricting videos with it.Dude you can even literally have the textbook definition of fair use (not reaction videos but things like news coverage and even only playing snippets to promote that artist in like a top ten video).You can also get copyright blocked if you sing the song and play every instrument yourself, still...I think you get the point.
Most bands are coming around and actually encouraging it..specially guys from Tool..etc. I mean why not? Metallica probably got $500 for this video and they are being seen by a new audience..whats wrong with that? Eagles on the other hand will strike you down in five minutes..

as a Veteran from iraq and afgan, this song hits different. paired with the video its even more gripping. it almost hurts to listen to it. which means it was a Masterpiece for what is intended for. soldiers. and also its musically just beautiful how it transitions from slow to heavy to slow to HEAVY

If it's views and likes you're after, a reaction to Nightwish is probably one of the safest bets. Pretty much any song from their concert at Wacken 2013 will do. Bumps any reaction channel from a couple of thousands up to the 20-40k range. Yes, it's a completely different style of metal, but well worth listening to. And that's coming from somebody who used to make fun of Nightwish in the early 2000s and never really liked their songs. But I've grown up over the course of the last decades, and their current singer changed my mind pretty quickly.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and worked in Veterans home with a quadriplegic patient. He only communicated with his eyes. He had been in that same bed for 20 years. He got in a car accident at the age of 18. Makes you appreciate what you have. And makes you feel embarrassed when you start to feel sorry for yourself and your trivial problems that will come and go.
I agree that he had worse issues than you, but you shouldn’t feel weak because you worry about your problems. Your problems are also life altering events. We all have the right to feel sorry for ourselves, everyone has their own problems that cause them stress and sorrow
Trying to bury your feelings because someone else has it "worse" doesn't help anything, it doesn't fix why you're feeling what you're feeling. Humans have emotions and I guarantee you that if he had never ever had that accident, he'd still feel depression at times too. Emotion isn't like the olympics, there are no higher emotions above anyone elses's, you feel those feelings for a reason. It's how you deal with them that matters the most.

Being a Metallica fan since 1982 and I can honestly say that this is the only song that literally kicks your ass in 7 and a half minutes with the progression of it. Metallica = Legends
One of the things to remember with Metal Music also is that you cannot listen to the song once and understand all the musicality that is happening. There is too much for the brain to process, you have to listen to it multiple times and each time your brain might pick up a new sound. The progression changes, the tempo changes, you need multiple listens to really enjoy the song.
Agreed. AND you definitely should not be watching a video when hearing for the first time. Shut your eyes and listen. Watching this all I see is a reaction to the imagery. There is no emotional connection to the story or the music. Listen to the music.
Like others have said, there are so many bands that stick to the cliches of Metal. Don’t get me wrong, I love some cliche metal. Dio often sings of swords and sorcery type stuff, and Blind Guardian is all about it. Then there is the hair metal that’s mostly sexual innuendos. I’m a big hair metal guy. Today I’m more about progressive metal. This type seems to have more thought provoking lyrics than the typical Demons & Wizards (great band by the way) stuff. Some of my favorites now are Kamelot, Circus Maximus, Evergrey, Iced Earth, etc. a lot of it is really about the times the music is created and what’s going on in the musicians life at that time. Still one of my all time favorite bands that have done both cliche and poignant lyrics was Savatage. The Oliva bro’s. we’re a once in a lifetime musical team. R.I.P. Criss. 😞 Then there are bands like Megadeth and Metallica that we’re far ahead of their time.

I can tell you as a veteran, that soldiers have indeed been forced to suffer like that. That is why there is the age old custom in the military known as Giving Mercy. Its always been a thing that those who aren't soldiers often find difficult to understand. There is a special pride that comes with serving your country by knowingly putting your life at risk. When a soldier loses the ability to truly live when they come home its crushing. Its not just physical wounds that do this to soldiers either. Thank all the gods that folks are finally realizing that and trying to help. I grew up in an era when people still cursed Vietnam Veterans, they cursed my father and uncles because they followed orders. They cursed them because they made it home... They laughed at me and my sister because our dad couldn't stand to walk out our front door. For years he spent all day just sitting in front of the record player listening to album after album of patriotic songs, trying to drown out the hate he came home to. Remember listening to One for the first time and seeing my dad sitting on the floor by the record player, day after day, year after year.
My dad, being a veteran of 4 tours in Vietnam as a Special Forces soldier, endured the same vitriol that yours did. It was not until I was old enough to understand things that I realized what he had come home to over and over again. My utmost respect to your dad as a soldier and his patriotism. My dad came home without wounds, for which I am very thankful for, but he lost a number of friends there. As for myself, this song (and especially the video) is always very relative and sometimes difficult to watch, as I being a veteran of multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, know some men who came home not like they left. One of my best buddies was KIA in Kandahar Province while we were deployed together. Your dad is my brother. My dad is your dad's brother. Veterans love each other whether we personally know them or not. I wish your dad all the best..
At some point people realize that the USA is in many ways the evil Empire from Star Wars, and thus people who volunteer to be storm troopers for their mammoth war machine are not really worthy of respect, and saying "I'm just a drone following orders" just doesn't cut it
Deeper / more complex Metallica - Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Sanitarium, Disposible Hero's. Metallica didnt do music videos for thier older stuff so you may as well hunt down lyric videos so you can comprehend as you go. I'll be watching👍
@@xdman20005 Then there's Dyers Eve, or The God that Failed, which are very personal songs they wrote. I am one of the big fish like you say, as I do prefer the Cliff Burton era... But the more I scan my brain (regarding what Metallica songs would serve best for a newbie who wants to get teary-eyed), the more I think the post-Burton era has at least *those* couple tunes to start with? Maybe the irony (that the better Metallica era could still be emotionally outdone by some of the slightly later work they did) is a reflection of the boys having just lost Cliff?
Rock and metal songs are the best for telling stories, a lot of people think its just screaming and shouting to guitars, but its so much more than that, if they would listen to the lyrics, most tell deep stories that are so much more than hard vocals. Try Master of Puppets by Metallica, but get the lyrics version and really try and understand the song, the music together with the lyrics is a musical piece of genius.
Yes, a lot of metal music has real deep lyrics about life. Most people never really hear the meaning of the lyrics, they just hear screaming lyrics and loud guitars. Listen to "Holy Wars" by Megadeth, and delve into the meaning of the words. Older folks from my generation (my parents/grandparents) only thought that Megadeth/Metallica were only writing lyrics of death and destruction, when really they were trying to spotlight the chaos of death and destruction....the chaos of war, and the lack of compassion in humans. They were not writing about how much fun it was to kill someone.

If you keep breaking down songs the way you just did, you'll build a strong following pretty quickly (and not just bcuz of your face). Metallica has a plethora of topical tunes, covering war and military, politics, addictions, death, faith, control, depression, the life struggle, literature etc, and Hetfield is certainly an interesting lyricist. There's many songs to recommend regarding the above topics, and an entire month might not be enough to get thru em all. A selected few I'd suggest would be Fade to Black, Master of puppets, Welcome home/Sanitarium, Disposable heroes, The shortest straw, Dyers Eve, Sad but Tru, Unforgiven, Until it sleeps, Hero of the day (S&M version), The fixxer, No leaf clover, All within my hands (acoustic version), Atlas rise, Halo on fire. Some of the songs are quite heavy and fast but that's often a conscious choice to support the story telling. In any case, hope their music will broaden your horizons and take you somewhere unexpected

I would definitely second any song off of Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightening. Not that the other albums are not as deep and thought provoking, but those two are extreme in their exploration of mental and emotional health. Like One off of And Justice For All being about a soldier who returns from war with everything taken from him; Ride The Lightening is about a man facing the electric chair; Fade To Black deals with suicidal thoughts; Welcome Home (Sanitarium) deals with being locked away in a mental institution; Disposable Heroes deals with how soldiers are disposable and replaceable; Master of Puppets deals with addiction, and so on and so on. Very deep in their exploration of the darker side of things and makes you really think about what it would be like to be in someone else's shoes and the consequences of what we as humans do to ourselves and others.
100% agree. I have watched a lot of reaction videos, especially those involving metal bands and your style is excellent. You let the song roll all the way through and gave your take on it at the end. Too many youtubers interrupt the video to interject an opinion which, to me, breaks the thought process and take you out of the moment. Great video. Keep it up! Have you heard the garage version of this song? All the music and room for the lyrics was there but, he hadn't finished the writing the song yet. There's a lot of nah nah nananah, na na nahhh (in the "hold my breath as I wish for death..." part) they're all really aggressive nah's... it's kinda funny.
Really liked your honesty about never listening to Metallica before, and I was quite surprised that the song affected you like it did....brilliant song by a brilliant band....a song along the same line, although heavier, is Disposable Heroes....one of the best Metallica songs ever in my opinion...another is The Unforgiven....try those out and hopefully we have a new metalhead in our community....rock on 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Think about the fact that this was the late 80's. Not only is this song still heavy, as is the whole album, but no one was saying this stuff in music, not like Metallica did.
"... that was a really aggressive sound..." Erm, this is one of their ballads. Contrast this with, say, "Damage, Inc." or "Battery", both from the album Master of Puppets.
Metallica has a lot of depth to a lot of their lyrics & musically they’re in a class of their own. I like how you reserved your comments for the end, unlike so many others who ruin it by continually interrupting the song.

@@kdubya4403 oh please. This is an immensely disturbing video for all generations. She didn't even cry or get emotional, her eyes just widened and she shook her head a couple times. Metallica knew it when they put it together that it was going to upset a lot of people. This was in 1988, so nearly all the viewers would've been Gen-X or Boomers at that point, and they definitely were bothered by it.

So I was 15 when this song came out. I had only recently gotten into harder music - rock etc, having grown up on 80s pop (MJ, Prince, Madonna, Cindy Lauper stuff). I fell in love with Sanitarium from their previous album. We didn't have RUclips or internet easy way to research and I grew up in a small community. I had no idea what Metallica looked like or what it looked like to see that kind of music to be played live. I remember MTV was doing it's "WORLD PREMIERE" it had been advertising of this video at 3PM. As soon as school was out, I rode my bike home faster than I ever had rushed through the door turned on my TV and made it in time to watch their first video ever and get my first ever look at my new favorite band. I remember how my smile and giddy enthusiasm slowly turned to absolute shock and horror and sadness and all sorts of emotions that felt uncomfortable. I was in a daze for the rest of the day and didn't know what to say or think about it but it left a huge impression on me and moved more than any song ever had before. Music videos at that time were usually happy and campy and cute....that video was emotionally scarring. But like this lovely gal said - in a good way cuz it makes you really introspective. About 5 years later after the Black Album was out I remember seeing an interview with (drummer) Lars who said "i love that people just didn't know what to say after seeing that video." That +1! Guilty. To this day I don't think any music video has ever moved me that way. Still one of the greatest epic songs ever recorded.
Your review right there shows what good music is supposed to do. Make you feel and a good band will have loyal fans that cant wait to see what they bring out next like you when you rode your bike straight from school. Personally it is my fav song in the world.
Some more Metallica songs: master of puppets, fade to black, blackened, wherever I may roam, creeping death, seek and destroy. If you wanna check out other metal bands, slip knot is a rly fun one. I would recommend starting with duality, psychosocial, sulfur, before I forget, or wait and bleed (my favorite).
@@slanzzy Do yourself a favour and check out Fade to Black live in Moscow 1991. This is Metallica at their peak and the best live version of this song. Crowd was reported to be 1.5 Mil in attendance. One of their most emotional songs.

They're nothing like anybody else and i personally love them. They love to mix genres and do different takes on Metal. For example they did a Bollywood Metal song and a Latin Metal song.
Metallica is a great band. If you seriously sit down and read James Hetfield's lyrics on most of his songs you will realize how talented the man is without even hearing him play a note. Then when they start playing it makes the lyrics even better. I'm glad you were able to come out of your comfort zone and give this great band a try.

She is imagining life as this deaf, dumb, mute, and blind torso with a brain case attached (don't know that you'd even call it a head at this point), desperately sending out its one lone wish using the only form of communication that remains to it, "kill me kill me kill me kill me kill me kill me".... pretty horrifying if you think about it.
Yea dude when I first heard this song, I felt numb, i have a sense where I could almost feel a situation that somebody else is going through and when I seen the movie that's in the video, fucked me up for sure but definitely an eye opener that today's crybaby generation need...not that it's their fault, they coddled into a technology based world but...I get this feeling when I start imagining that if Warner hurtzof(something like that) did a remake of it, it would definitely be a paradigm shift
I'm a 70's baby. I grew up with Metallica and have met them in person several times. Other songs by Metallica I think you might like would be Of Wolf and Man, For whom the Bell tolls, Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets. They all got me through very rough times. And watch the Cliff Burton Bass Solos. He was the original Bassist for Metallica.

drealmerz7 z sound wise absolutely. Lyric wise nah I’d have to disagree. Someone said too but quickly deleted, it’s about their stuff being stolen. Which is kinda true. The feelings that were brought around were inspired by their stuff getting stolen. But I don’t think maybe something different next time is necessary. @Maximus Max: Pretty fucking funny that you can just baselessly make an assertion like that about a whole generation when it was my generation filling plenty of body bags in Iraq and Afghanistan. I was 20 in Iraq one of my 20 year old unit mates was killed by an IED in 2007. The scene of that IED blast haunt me to this day while you think my generation believes warfare is fought by throwing daisies.
as someone that served in the U.S ARMY for 14 years this song and wrong side of heaven by five finger death punch and american soldier by Toby Kieth are songs that mean a great deal to me and someone down below in his comments does not know what he is talking about the first thing they teach you is to always question orders if you think they are wrong or illegal you can refuse those orders
The video clips are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" from 1971. It's about a World War I soldier who's severely wounded. The movie is based off of a book of the same name from the 1930's.
Also the book and I guess movie is what the song was written about. They go hand in hand. Also the is the first "music video" for a metal song that really wasn't a live performance. So people say anyways.
Adam Blakeney I do wish their “selling out” was limited to making videos like this, but still playing Justice type songs. Boy what a shock ‘96 came to be, then in ‘97 or ‘98 whenever reload blessed our presence. The coffin nail for me came with the Napster debacle, until then, I had hoped they could recreate what they were doing before kind of like how Megadeth was able to. Hardwired was close but still had an element or two missing.
Metallica baught the rights to this movie to use it for the video and the song (the day that never comes) might be cool for you to react to I think it's underrated

As most of people my age have grown up with this music its nice to see the younger generation stepping out of their comfort zones and experiencing it. i have a 19 and 24 year old and they grew up listening to this music and they love it
The bass-centric version of the song is worth checking out. Really highlights Cliff's contribution and gives the song new perspective. Master of Puppets was such an incredible album. Every song is perfect. It's how I choose to remember Metallica
I started to learn the bass and Cliff was my idol. when he died I felt I'd lost a hero. many great bass players out there but Cliff had a soul to his playing that only Geddy Lee comes close to, miss you sensae
I really enjoyed that reaction. It's very refreshing to see someone who admittedly hasn't heard a lot of metal openly say that she was surprised about the emotional content of the song. What you'll perhaps be even more surprised by, if you keep listening and reacting to this genre and the subgenres around it, is that it can often be more emotional that even mainstream stuff like ballads and the like. A lot (A LOT) of metal is very deep and in many cases, the songs are a way for the singer (and also the other band members) to exorcise demons. this is one of those songs where you need to listen to the studio version with lyrics then the music video. the song is about the movie Johnny Got His Gun where he is drafted for war steps on a land mine and ends up having all his limbs amputated, also loses his sight, hearing and the ability to speak. and on the subject of war, Disposable Heroes by Metallica is another must listen.
1 - I suggest Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls. 2 - there are most likely soldiers who have experienced this as its based off of WW1. The scenes in the video are all from the film Johnny Got His Gun. Its very moving. 3 - it is a very emotional song and is of course anti war as it relates to the casualties and price paid by the individuals who have to fight these wars. For Whom the Bell Tolls (my suggestion) is similar but deals more with questioning more why the war is fought. Enjoy your journey thru Metal and some of the songs with deeper messages than just louder volume. You may also enjoy early era Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave and War Pigs for their messages.
Metal for me actually calms me down and if I'm going through something it put me at ease and makes me feel better. Everyone is different. I listen to most genre of music and Metallica has always been my favorite. Good for you for opening your mind. Look forward to more videos.
For me it gives me whatever I need at the time. If I need to relax, it will calm me down. If I need focus or energy, it will be given. But I guess that’s how it is for us because we enjoy Metal.
Another great song by Metallica is "Disposable Heroes." Again, James is writing about war but this time he focuses more on the soldier and how they're used. Stripped of their individualism and pretty much anything that makes them human. They are forced to keep marching and killing. To just obey and serve, they can no longer question or think for themselves. Please check out this classic from the 1986 album "Master of Puppets."
Actually it was about more than just soldiers. He started the song writing about athletes and the way they are tossed aside once used up and then incorporated the military into it.
James started writing the lyrics to that tune, after a TV announcer referred to old, beat up football players as "disposable heroes." Nice try though, professor.
I was never a big fan of reaction videos, but this was pretty good. You could tell that she was giving the song her full attention, and then once it was finished she gave thoughtful commentary. I find that most people making these videos spend the whole time trying the 'react' and actually don't pay any attention to the song. Bonus points for showing the whole video too, and not interrupting it. I was a little disappointed that she only seemed to comment on how awful it must be for someone in that situation, but as far as I noticed never mentioned the theme of war. I can't blame her though! It's hard to really take everything in the first time you listen to a song, especially when it's a genre that your new to. I would watch a follow up video about this song after she has listened to it a few more times.
Heavy metal is by far the most real music you will find, no hiding just the truth of life. Try Iron Maiden but Metallica "Fade To Black", "Master of Puppets", Sanitarium"

Johnny Got His Gun, IMHO, should be on the required reading list for every HS student. It is as important an powerful a book/piece of art as To Kill A Mockingbird, Of Mice and Man, Huck Finn, or any other piece currently in a schools curriculum. The part where Johnny learns the extent of his damage alone is worthy of a post grad dissertation, yet the book every bit of it is accessible at to any that pick it up. It leaves the reader emotionally naked and completely emphatic with Johnny.

This song has extreamly personal connection for me. When I was ten years old I got very very sick very suddenly with a rare auto immune disease known as ADEM. I woke up with a pan in my neck and two hours later i was completly blind and paralyzed and on life support. You see i had developed legions on my brainstem. I could not see or move or breath for months, I would literatly thrash in full body spasms for breath because my diaphram shut down. Its a long story but for 6 weeks the docs thought i was faking my symptoms for attention so no visitors were allowed and no one was allowed to help me eat, i starved and lost 50% of my body weight. I still use a wheelchair because of the dammage that was done but the really severe symptoms are gone but i still relive those events in nightmares. Anyway I fealt like no one understood what it was like to go through what i went through but then i heard One by metalica (2 years after the event) and it described what it was like and how i felt and i felt i wasn't as alone anymore. That led me to listen to more of their music, songs like trapped under ice, fade to black and welcome home sanitarium spoke to me on such a personal level in a very real way. This led me to becoming a full blown metal head and now many years later i listen to all metal genres and love metal because it connects to me so personally.

Much of the last 15 years has been spent in intensive physical therapy. Because of the limitations of my body I decided to go into mechanical engineering. I want to use my engineering knowledge to develop walking exoskelitons that can give people like me mobility and freedom again. Neurallink technology will play a vital role in that. There are companies producing walking suits right now but they are very expesive and not covered by insurance. Rewalk is a german company with a ver advanced walking suit that can even walk up and down stairs and can be used by total parapyligic. Some suits require assistance from the wearer but this one does not. It uses wrist controls and body weight shift to take steps. I hope to bring down the cost of these machines by using 3d printed parts and making the software simpler by using a smart phone to run the machine. I even thought of a way to use the smart phone gps to guide it. That is my dream.

The song One by Metallica is based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo which is about World War 1. It describes the life of a man who goes to war and is a victim of a mortar blowing up in his face which robs him of his ability to see, hear, smell, or taste and blows his arms and legs off. He comes out of a coma while in the hospital and during his time there he reflects on his life and the things his father had told him. Eventually doctors grow worried because he keeps having spasms all the time but doesn’t seem to be dying from them. They call in the general who has no answers for the spasming but a soldier alongside the general recognizes the spasming as Morse code. The general then asks what he’s attempting to communicate and the soldier replies with “Kill me, over and over again. Kill me”.
It’s about a wounded soldier who cannot see, cannot taste, cannot hear, cannot smell, and has no limbs but is very much alive and wishes for death in a constant state of regret and sorrow.
A specific passage from the novel inspired the song: “How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it’s a million to one shot. But if he does win, you’ll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I’d read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn’t believe it because it’s a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. I’d never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one.”
In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie and this music video uses images and monologues from that movie.

Happy late B-Day! One of my favorite bands also. Been listening to them since the mid 90's and finally got to see them live in Atlanta, GA in 2017. Hands down the most amazing show I've been to. The laser and sound effects when they played One were incredible. We showed up early and sat through two opening acts. When Metallica came on we were standing on the ground in front of the stage. The crowd let out a massive singular cheer. I turned around and I swear it looked like every seat in the stadium was occupied. One of the really cool things was when people shouted, screamed or cheered in unison you could feel it. Absolutely amazing. I'll never forget it. Also crowd was full of people of all ages and everyone we met was really nice.
The best anti war book ever! Read it 5 times. And heard James purchased the rights to the book cause he liked it so much.

If it's views and likes you're after, a reaction to Nightwish is probably one of the safest bets. Pretty much any song from their concert at Wacken 2013 will do. Bumps any reaction channel from a couple of thousands up to the 20-40k range. Yes, it's a completely different style of metal, but well worth listening to. And that's coming from somebody who used to make fun of Nightwish in the early 2000s and never really liked their songs. But I've grown up over the course of the last decades, and their current singer changed my mind pretty quickly.

I was a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy and worked in Veterans home with a quadriplegic patient. He only communicated with his eyes. He had been in that same bed for 20 years. He got in a car accident at the age of 18. Makes you appreciate what you have. And makes you feel embarrassed when you start to feel sorry for yourself and your trivial problems that will come and go.
I agree that he had worse issues than you, but you shouldn’t feel weak because you worry about your problems. Your problems are also life altering events. We all have the right to feel sorry for ourselves, everyone has their own problems that cause them stress and sorrow
Trying to bury your feelings because someone else has it "worse" doesn't help anything, it doesn't fix why you're feeling what you're feeling. Humans have emotions and I guarantee you that if he had never ever had that accident, he'd still feel depression at times too. Emotion isn't like the olympics, there are no higher emotions above anyone elses's, you feel those feelings for a reason. It's how you deal with them that matters the most.

Being a Metallica fan since 1982 and I can honestly say that this is the only song that literally kicks your ass in 7 and a half minutes with the progression of it. Metallica = Legends
One of the things to remember with Metal Music also is that you cannot listen to the song once and understand all the musicality that is happening. There is too much for the brain to process, you have to listen to it multiple times and each time your brain might pick up a new sound. The progression changes, the tempo changes, you need multiple listens to really enjoy the song.

Like others have said, there are so many bands that stick to the cliches of Metal. Don’t get me wrong, I love some cliche metal. Dio often sings of swords and sorcery type stuff, and Blind Guardian is all about it.
Then there is the hair metal that’s mostly sexual innuendos. I’m a big hair metal guy.
Today I’m more about progressive metal. This type seems to have more thought provoking lyrics than the typical Demons & Wizards (great band by the way) stuff.
Some of my favorites now are Kamelot, Circus Maximus, Evergrey, Iced Earth, etc. a lot of it is really about the times the music is created and what’s going on in the musicians life at that time. Still one of my all time favorite bands that have done both cliche and poignant lyrics was Savatage. The Oliva bro’s. we’re a once in a lifetime musical team. R.I.P. Criss. 😞
Then there are bands like Megadeth and Metallica that we’re far ahead of their time.

I can tell you as a veteran, that soldiers have indeed been forced to suffer like that. That is why there is the age old custom in the military known as Giving Mercy. Its always been a thing that those who aren't soldiers often find difficult to understand.
There is a special pride that comes with serving your country by knowingly putting your life at risk. When a soldier loses the ability to truly live when they come home its crushing. Its not just physical wounds that do this to soldiers either. Thank all the gods that folks are finally realizing that and trying to help.
I grew up in an era when people still cursed Vietnam Veterans, they cursed my father and uncles because they followed orders. They cursed them because they made it home... They laughed at me and my sister because our dad couldn't stand to walk out our front door. For years he spent all day just sitting in front of the record player listening to album after album of patriotic songs, trying to drown out the hate he came home to. Remember listening to One for the first time and seeing my dad sitting on the floor by the record player, day after day, year after year.

My dad, being a veteran of 4 tours in Vietnam as a Special Forces soldier, endured the same vitriol that yours did. It was not until I was old enough to understand things that I realized what he had come home to over and over again. My utmost respect to your dad as a soldier and his patriotism. My dad came home without wounds, for which I am very thankful for, but he lost a number of friends there.
As for myself, this song (and especially the video) is always very relative and sometimes difficult to watch, as I being a veteran of multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, know some men who came home not like they left. One of my best buddies was KIA in Kandahar Province while we were deployed together.

Rock and metal songs are the best for telling stories, a lot of people think its just screaming and shouting to guitars, but its so much more than that, if they would listen to the lyrics, most tell deep stories that are so much more than hard vocals. Try Master of Puppets by Metallica, but get the lyrics version and really try and understand the song, the music together with the lyrics is a musical piece of genius.
Yes, a lot of metal music has real deep lyrics about life. Most people never really hear the meaning of the lyrics, they just hear screaming lyrics and loud guitars. Listen to "Holy Wars" by Megadeth, and delve into the meaning of the words. Older folks from my generation (my parents/grandparents) only thought that Megadeth/Metallica were only writing lyrics of death and destruction, when really they were trying to spotlight the chaos of death and destruction....the chaos of war, and the lack of compassion in humans. They were not writing about how much fun it was to kill someone.

If you keep breaking down songs the way you just did, you'll build a strong following pretty quickly (and not just bcuz of your face). Metallica has a plethora of topical tunes, covering war and military, politics, addictions, death, faith, control, depression, the life struggle, literature etc, and Hetfield is certainly an interesting lyricist. There's many songs to recommend regarding the above topics, and an entire month might not be enough to get thru em all. A selected few I'd suggest would be Fade to Black, Master of puppets, Welcome home/Sanitarium, Disposable heroes, The shortest straw, Dyers Eve, Sad but Tru, Unforgiven, Until it sleeps, Hero of the day (S&M version), The fixxer, No leaf clover, All within my hands (acoustic version), Atlas rise, Halo on fire. Some of the songs are quite heavy and fast but that's often a conscious choice to support the story telling. In any case, hope their music will broaden your horizons and take you somewhere unexpected

I would definitely second any song off of Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightening. Not that the other albums are not as deep and thought provoking, but those two are extreme in their exploration of mental and emotional health. Like One off of And Justice For All being about a soldier who returns from war with everything taken from him; Ride The Lightening is about a man facing the electric chair; Fade To Black deals with suicidal thoughts; Welcome Home (Sanitarium) deals with being locked away in a mental institution; Disposable Heroes deals with how soldiers are disposable and replaceable; Master of Puppets deals with addiction, and so on and so on. Very deep in their exploration of the darker side of things and makes you really think about what it would be like to be in someone else's shoes and the consequences of what we as humans do to ourselves and others.
100% agree. I have watched a lot of reaction videos, especially those involving metal bands and your style is excellent. You let the song roll all the way through and gave your take on it at the end. Too many youtubers interrupt the video to interject an opinion which, to me, breaks the thought process and take you out of the moment. Great video. Keep it up! Metallica knew it when they put it together that it was going to upset a lot of people. So I was 15 when this song came out. I had only recently gotten into harder music - rock etc, having grown up on 80s pop (MJ, Prince, Madonna, Cindy Lauper stuff). I fell in love with Sanitarium from their previous album. We didn't have RUclips or internet easy way to research and I grew up in a small community. I had no idea what Metallica looked like or what it looked like to see that kind of music to be played live. I remember MTV was doing it's "WORLD PREMIERE" it had been advertising of this video at 3PM. As soon as school was out, I rode my bike home faster than I ever had rushed through the door turned on my TV and made it in time to watch their first video ever and get my first ever look at my new favorite band. I remember how my smile and giddy enthusiasm slowly turned to absolute shock and horror and sadness and all sorts of emotions that felt uncomfortable. I was in a daze for the rest of the day and didn't know what to say or think about it but it left a huge impression on me and moved more than any song ever had before. Music videos at that time were usually happy and campy and cute....that video was emotionally scarring. But like this lovely gal said - in a good way cuz it makes you really introspective. About 5 years later after the Black Album was out I remember seeing an interview with (drummer) Lars who said "i love that people just didn't know what to say after seeing that video." That +1! Guilty. To this day I don't think any music video has ever moved me that way. Still one of the greatest epic songs ever recorded.
Your review right there shows what good music is supposed to do. Make you feel and a good band will have loyal fans that cant wait to see what they bring out next like you when you rode your bike straight from school. Personally it is my fav song in the world.

I would recommend starting with duality, psychosocial, sulfur, before I forget, or wait and bleed (my favorite).

Metallica is a great band. If you seriously sit down and read James Hetfield's lyrics on most of his songs you will realize how talented the man is without even hearing him play a note. I'm a 70's baby. I grew up with Metallica and have met them in person several times. Other songs by Metallica I think you might like would be Of Wolf and Man, For whom the Bell tolls, Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets. They all got me through very rough times. And watch the Cliff Burton Bass Solos. He was the original Bassist for Metallica.
Metal is to release energy, not have it be pent up for later.

The video clips are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" from 1971. It's about a World War I soldier who's severely wounded. The movie is based off of a book of the same name from the 1930's.
Also the book and I guess movie is what the song was written about. They go hand in hand. Also the is the first "music video" for a metal song that really wasn't a live performance. So people say anyways.

Boy what a shock ‘96 came to be, then in ‘97 or ‘98 whenever reload blessed our presence. The coffin nail for me came with the Napster debacle, until then, I had hoped they could recreate what they were doing before kind of like how Megadeth was able to. Hardwired was close but still had an element or two missing.

I started to learn the bass and Cliff was my idol. when he died I felt I'd lost a hero. many great bass players out there but Cliff had a soul to his playing that only Geddy Lee comes close to, miss you sensae
I really enjoyed that reaction. It's very refreshing to see someone who admittedly hasn't heard a lot of metal openly say that she was surprised about the emotional content of the song. What you'll perhaps be even more surprised by, if you keep listening and reacting to this genre and the subgenres around it, is that it can often be more emotional that even mainstream stuff like ballads and the like. A lot (A LOT) of metal is very deep and in many cases, the songs are a way for the singer (and also the other band members) to exorcise demons. The rabbit hole does go pretty deep for some bands and songs (Alice in Chains, Tool, etcetera), so advance warning on that. Just be prepared and go in with eyes, ears, and mind open.

this is one of those songs where you need to listen to the studio version with lyrics then the music video. the song is about the movie Johnny Got His Gun where he is drafted for war steps on a land mine and ends up having all his limbs amputated, also loses his sight, hearing and the ability to speak. and on the subject of war, Disposable Heroes by Metallica is another must listen.
1 - I suggest Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls.
2 - there are most likely soldiers who have experienced this as its based off of WW1. The scenes in the video are all from the film Johnny Got His Gun. Its very moving.
3 - it is a very emotional song and is of course anti war as it relates to the casualties and price paid by the individuals who have to fight these wars. For Whom the Bell Tolls (my suggestion) is similar but deals more with questioning more why the war is fought.
Enjoy your journey thru Metal and some of the songs with deeper messages than just louder volume.
You may also enjoy early era Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave and War Pigs for their messages.

Metal for me actually calms me down and if I'm going through something it put me at ease and makes me feel better. Everyone is different. I listen to most genre of music and Metallica has always been my favorite. Good for you for opening your mind. Look forward to more videos.
For me it gives me whatever I need at the time. If I need to relax, it will calm me down. If I need focus or energy, it will be given. But I guess that’s how it is for us because we enjoy Metal.

Another great song by Metallica is "Disposable Heroes." Again, James is writing about war but this time he focuses more on the soldier and how they're used. Stripped of their individualism and pretty much anything that makes them human. They are forced to keep marching and killing. To just obey and serve, they can no longer question or think for themselves. Please check out this classic from the 1986 album "Master of Puppets."
Actually it was about more than just soldiers. He started the song writing about athletes and the way they are tossed aside once used up and then incorporated the military into it.
James started writing the lyrics to that tune, after a TV announcer referred to old, beat up football players as "disposable heroes." Nice try though, professor.
I was never a big fan of reaction videos, but this was pretty good. You could tell that she was giving the song her full attention, and then once it was finished she gave thoughtful commentary. I find that most people making these videos spend the whole time trying the 'react' and actually don't pay any attention to the song. Bonus points for showing the whole video too, and not interrupting it.
I was a little disappointed that she only seemed to comment on how awful it must be for someone in that situation, but as far as I noticed never mentioned the theme of war. I can't blame her though! It's hard to really take everything in the first time you listen to a song, especially when it's a genre that your new to. I would watch a follow up video about this song after she has listened to it a few more times.

Great debut! Highly appreciated, that you didn't interrupt the song, but listened to the end before reacting and gave the musicians their respect. There is never late to discover metal music, specially the deep emotional baggage each song carries, therefore the music is so ''loud/disturbing/complicated''. Make a research on One lyrics, they are based on a book, which James Hatfield (lead vocalist) had read, if I'm not mistake it's called ''Johnny got his gun''. I recommend to react to lyric videos (in order not to distract from the song) or live performances. Other great songs by Metallica are :

(I also hate when people speak over important parts of the songs) I'm really happy to be discovering this type of music now and I feel foolish for avoiding it my whole life before now. I remember this album when it first came out I was in 6 or 7th grade now im 42 years old brings back memories one of my favorites.
Johnny Got His Gun, IMHO, should be on the required reading list for every HS student. It is as important an powerful a book/piece of art as To Kill A Mockingbird, Of Mice and Man, Huck Finn, or any other piece currently in a schools curriculum. The part where Johnny learns the extent of his damage alone is worthy of a post grad dissertation, yet the book every bit of it is accessible at to any that pick it up. It leaves the reader emotionally naked and completely emphatic with Johnny.

This song has extreamly personal connection for me. When I was ten years old I got very very sick very suddenly with a rare auto immune disease known as ADEM. I woke up with a pan in my neck and two hours later i was completly blind and paralyzed and on life support. You see i had developed legions on my brainstem. I could not see or move or breath for months, I would literatly thrash in full body spasms for breath because my diaphram shut down. Its a long story but for 6 weeks the docs thought i was faking my symptoms for attention so no visitors were allowed and no one was allowed to help me eat, i starved and lost 50% of my body weight. I still use a wheelchair because of the dammage that was done but the really severe symptoms are gone but i still relive those events in nightmares. Anyway I fealt like no one understood what it was like to go through what i went through but then i heard One by metalica (2 years after the event) and it described what it was like and how i felt and i felt i wasn't as alone anymore. That led me to listen to more of their music, songs like trapped under ice, fade to black and welcome home sanitarium spoke to me on such a personal level in a very real way. This led me to becoming a full blown metal head and now many years later i listen to all metal genres and love metal because it connects to me so personally.
Wow...how strong you must be to have overcome this. Here you are now fully engaged in life....looks like you traveled a long road to get here.

@@zeroceiling I have had to fight to overcome so many things from my ADEM event. I have had to relearn and reinvent my entire life. Much of the last 15 years has been spent in intensive physical therapy. Because of the limitations of my body I decided to go into mechanical engineering. I want to use my engineering knowledge to develop walking exoskelitons that can give people like me mobility and freedom again. Neurallink technology will play a vital role in that. There are companies producing walking suits right now but they are very expesive and not covered by insurance. Rewalk is a german company with a ver advanced walking suit that can even walk up and down stairs and can be used by total parapyligic. Some suits require assistance from the wearer but this one does not. It uses wrist controls and body weight shift to take steps. I hope to bring down the cost of these machines by using 3d printed parts and making the software simpler by using a smart phone to run the machine. I even thought of a way to use the smart phone gps to guide it. That is my dream.

@@ianflanagan209 i really want your dream to become true. Though i am not in your situation, i really hope that one day in my lifetime, i will see that paralyze is not an issue for mankind anymore. I don`t care about flying cars and other shits that people are dreaming about the future. This, healing paralyze and other such diseases will be a real big step for the human race. At this moment, all i am doing is to try to make a lot of money and i hope that one day i will be somehow involved in this type of projects. Although i am not enough smart to come up with an innovative idea. I am researching once or twice in a month about any progress made in this field and i really hope that people with more money and more brain than myself, will make better efforts in trying to solve this problem.
