I covered this song with a friend in high school a week before he deployed to Afghanistan, he was a great drummer...we were gonna try to start an actual band after his deployment. Two weeks after he got sent over there he was killed by an IED...so the song AND the video hit really hard for me. I miss that guy soooo much
From a military Vet, I'm sorry for your loss. I couldn't imagine going through what you did. I do have friends and family who have gone over to the sandbox, sometimes multiple times, but they've always returned. They were lucky.
Man it’s hard to believe ...And Justice For All came out 32 years ago now . Where the hell did time go. One and the whole album still stands up to this day.
The song is about a soldier in WW1 who steps on a landmine and has his arms and legs blown off. Also he loses his sight, hearing and his ability to talk. Essentially he is trapped in his own body with only his thoughts. He figures out a way to communicate to the doctors using morse code by tapping his head and he asks them to kill him as he does not want to live the rest of his life like that. The nurse wants to kill him however the army generals stop her and have him kept alive locked away in a room. The band had the idea originally for the song as just a living brain in a jar however discovered a movie called Johnny Got His Gun (based on the book of the same name) which was the story of the soldier. The band wrote the song around that story. Pieces of the movie were used in the bands music video which is what you have just watched
Actually, Martin, he didn't step on a landmine (song lyric got it wrong), a bomb dropped on him. The explosion took all four limbs and destroyed his face. The soldier (Timothy Bottoms) goes between memory, fantasy, and hallucinations, not being able to tell one from the other. No, the movie has long stretches with no action, so pass it by if that's all you're looking for, but it is very thought provoking.
This was their first video ever to appear on MTV. It was on a show called "Headbangers Ball"...the video came on at 1:00a.m. because the song is called "One". Just a fun fyi!
I remember that night....vividly. I was on the couch, ahem.....in the throes of passion with my girlfriend and stopped midway to watch the video. She did NOT appreciate being upstaged by Metallica. I later found a better girl who I married. She gets it completely!
The movie clips in the video are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" (1971). If you decide to watch it....keep in mind it's very hard to watch....and the book is even harder to read....
The song is the inside of a mind of someone who lost all his limbs in war, and was being used as an experiment by doctors. He was alive but couldn’t talk or do anything besides think, and this is supposed to be a depiction of his thoughts and how he just wants it to end and die.
I'm not sure "experiment" is 100% fair. Is that in the movie or book? Do you mean an experiment just to see if they could keep him alive? From my understanding of the video, yes, his body was destroyed beyond belief and yes he was being kept alive entirely through artificial medical means, but I don't think they were doing additional experiments or testing on him just for the experiment sake..?
Trivia: I'm sure someone must have mentioned this already, but Metallica tried to negotiate for the rights to show movie clips in their music video, and the rights holders were asking for too much money, so they just bought the rights to the entire movie and gave permission to themselves to put it in the video. The original copyright-holders were being idiots. Many kids learned about the existence of this movie because of the Metallica video.
This isn’t entirely true. Metallica bought the rights to the movie after the video was produced and after paying royalties several times. They figured it would be cheaper than paying royalties every time the video was shown.
It’s awesome that she likes to “rock out to Wherever I May Roam” and it’s very telling how her smile slowly disappears as she begins to realize she’s not going to have a rocking good time with this one. The despair is inescapable. This is some heavy stuff.

I feel that!...I remember my uncle when I was like 10 putting me on to metallica, iron maiden, sabbath...etc...and him being mad enthused...I get it. Magical. Crazy how music older than myself is loving on through generations, while these mumble rappers come and go like 69 lil zanny bars at a psychiatric hospital. This was so fun to watch. Thanks Shi
Has anyone ever noticed that “Johnny” used the mores code for SOS ...- - - ... with the only thing he had left, his m-f’n HEAD?!?!? He was head banging!!!!!! Dude!?! Levels on levels on top of levels people.
One of the best reactions I have seen to this masterpiece ! Music is art and art is against war and destruction. Please react to Disposable Heroes, ...and justice for all and Turn the Page!
The movie was "Johnny Got His Gun" made in 1971. Possibly the scariest imaginable circumstance. Getting hit by a mortar and losing your arms, legs, speech, hearing and sight.... After listening to this song over 30 years it still makes me emotional near the end when he's calling for his dad. Amazing song, amazing video. Glad you really got it.
You really should be wearing headphones - half decent ones to get the full appreciation. Its not a must but the music is done so well that you really will have a different experience with them....

You’d be surprised how many RUclipsrs who reacted to this video didn’t understand what was going on, but you get it. The song is amazing, but when you watch the video, it has a strong, but depressing message.

I listen to reaction video's mostly getting ready for work because comments are funny sometimes plus helps wake me up.i just came across your reaction videos .holy crap your reaction is what I feel . Awesome thank you so much for posting your reactions I needed something positive really bad
The song is a testament to the "absolute" horrors of WAR! Kids today are completely desensatized to the "reality" that is war! Video games and Netflix are illusions of war. Real WAR is terrifying and madness! Its the saturation point of mans inhumanity toward one another times 10! The sounds will haunt you your entire life, the smells will never leave you. War breaks strong men and women and it changes them forever! They are scarred for life having lived through it. Pray for the veterans who return missing limbs and organs and broken minds and pray you never have to expierence the carnage that is WAR!
Yeah, I have to believe that the band watched that movie and were inspired to write that song because it fits together too perfectly. Landmine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hearing, taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul, left me with life in hell. And seriously, I couldn't imagine anything worse. Like the lines from the movie say....I can't tell if I'm awake or dreaming/Mother! Mother where are you? I'm having a nightmare and I can't wake up!!! Fucking chilling. Just thinking about it makes me cry.

The book that this is based one "Johnny got his gun" should be a must read. My daughter is reading it now. If you think the movie video was horrifying, the book makes you think even more. You should look at the history with the book as well. It was taken off of library shelves during several wars. It was looked at as a media that could potentially keep people from signing up for military duty.

Wow, great reaction!! Very expressive, even without speaking, but also a reminder that a young and good looking person can also be smart, thoughtful, open minded and insightful...
This song is based on the movie Johnny Got His Gun. The clips are from the movie. He lost his arms, legs, eye sight and hearing all from a land mine and has no way of communicating with anyone until uses his head to tap out Morse code on his pillow. He asks them to kill him. When they refuse to kill him, he just stops communicating and just shuts down and lays there waiting for death, which may not come for a long time.
The song is based upon a book called 'Jhonny got his gun', it's about a ww1 vet losing his sight, arms and legs. He has these convulsions wich are actually morse code, he keeps saying kill me.
This song was inspired by a movie where a soldier was blown up and he had no sight, hearing, smell or feeling. He didn't know if he was alive or dead because all senses were gone.
When MTV first put this out.. I was really really taken... started off slow.. but ended Bigg fuck ya!! Sent chills through my body!! Knowing knowing.. look out other heavy metal band’s
In 2017 my son and I saw Metallica in Arlington Texas at AT&T stadium with 60,000 in attendance when they performed “One” to us it was the highlight of the concert. One of the best concerts we’ve seen. When you get the chance check out “Painkiller” our fav Judas Priest song which is definitely an all time metal classic.
The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book, originally written in 1938. Johnny was a soldier in World War One. He is caught in an explosion that leaves him with no arms, no legs, no face, no ears. He cannot speak, hear, or see - has no sense of time or where he is, and is fed through a tube and breathing through a respirator. I have always interpreted the cut scenes within the song as what is happening to Johnny in the real world. The moments of the song where Johnny is "thinking out loud" are his conscious mind, and James Hetfields voice is his subconscious mind. This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's thought, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?" From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity. By the time Kirk Hammett's guitar solo hits, (and hits hard), I've always pictured that as the final "battle" between Johnny's conscious and subconscious mind, with the final "S.O.S. Help me..." mantra at the conclusion signifying that Johnny's mind is the same as his body, reduced to "one" singular, autonomic thought. Nothing else of him remains from that point forward. Johnny has gone, and only the breathing corpse remains until he would die of old age. At the end, the crowd singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" symbolizes how society went on and forgot about him, (and the veterans in general). If you listen to this song from that perspective, you will be bawling by the end.
This song is based on a movie from the '70's called "Johnny got his gun". It's on RUclips for free. All the background talking from different characters are from the movie. It's a good movie. You should really watch it. It will give you insight on exactly what the song is about.
I see how you start out the video smiling and feeling good (beautiful btw!!), and the song pulls you down into the mud with it. This song and video is a masterpiece to have this kind of impact on everyone (not just you) who listens to it.
During WWI, the first wounded troops sent stateside were on trains, as they would approach towns with cheering people they would stop to allow the citizens to board and greet the soldiers. The citizens were greeted with horrifically wounded soldiers, the reactions from the citizens caused these stops to end.
I also really appreciate how you play the video interact with text on your screen rather than stopping and reacting every two minutes like a lot of people do
Great reactions! The diverse genres are where it's at for sure. Would love to see ya react to Megadeth (Holy Wars, Hangar 18), and maybe Dragonforce (Through the Fire and Flames). Oh hell, just start in the 70's and we'll meet back here! LoL... 216
Such insight from one so young. You nailed it. I've watched reactors go down so many different roads with what this song means and you nailed it right out of the gate. Brava! Keep up the good work! PEACE!!!!!
I think the story that inspired this song is loosely based on an actual event. A signal officer who was visiting a military hospital after WW1 noticed a heavily injured patient who was supposed to be in a comma would spasm in a strange way. The officer discovered the patient was communicating in Morse code, similar to the man in the video. The patient said he wanted to die. The officer informed the medical authorities who eventually believed the signal officer. Shortly after this the patient died from an "accidental" overdose of morphine.
I trully believe that this is the greatest song ever written. I am a vet who has tried to save friends that were too far gone. This song hits me hard. Sorry for the gloom. Great reaction. Much love.

To be fair, the old movie and audio overlay is fvckin confusing. It just weeds out the inept, however. Almost like an attention test, huh?
I fail to see anyone not headbanging when you get to the ' machine gun' riff
It's funny how you can use the term "machine gun riff" and everybody understands
call it a morse code riff 😉

The landmine part is better because that makes it feel more related to 'Nam which was far more relevant at the time.

He remembered the Morse code. Nodding the codes with his head to the nurse.

Wow, great reaction!! Very expressive, even without speaking, but also a reminder that a young and good looking person can also be smart, thoughtful, open minded and insightful...
it's a horror of war story, an amazing piece ... the vid was so haunting but told the story and laid everything so bare ...
My all time favorite band including KoRn. you come off as like the coolest chick to ever hang around with 🤘
AWESOME REACTION!!!!!! Your facial expressions PRICELESS!!!!!
Such an emotional roller coaster
One of my all time favorite songs.
This song was inspired by a movie where a soldier was blown up and he had no sight, hearing, smell or feeling. He didn't know if he was alive or dead because all senses were gone.
Master of Puppets live in Seattle '89
Yes, this is the greatest live performance ever
Best reaction to this song from anyone! Unlike others, you actually listened to the words of this great, tragic, sad song.... Great friggin job!!
One was on And Justice For All released in 1988, it is their first hit single.
Jesus the guitar playing is sick! Never gets old
No. You reacted to this in the correct way. Your reaction is what the band wanted to convey... the horror of war.
Great reaction!
WWI, not just any war
When MTV first put this out.. I was really really taken... started off slow.. but ended Bigg fuck ya!! Sent chills through my body!! Knowing knowing.. look out other heavy metal band’s
You absolutely understood the song, thank you!
The 80s and 90s put a lot of thought in their videos back in the day. They don't make videos like that anymore.
Facts!
Beautiful. Metalhead. Gets it.....Pay attention, lads -- this is what you're looking for.
Never get tired of hearing this masterpiece.
I thought the same thing,. She ain't gonna be smiling for long
The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book, originally written in 1938.
This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's thought, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?"
From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity.
Welcome to the fandom my fellow woman!
This song is based on a movie from the '70's called "Johnny got his gun". It's on RUclips for free. All the background talking from different characters are from the movie. It's a good movie. You should really watch it. It will give you insight on exactly what the song is about.
This song and All Nightmare Long both freaked me out, in each their own way.
LoL... 216
To me, the greatest metal video of all time. You did it awesome young lady.
Much love.
