    This song has something like 47 meter changes, with 12 time signatures, but instead of just being noise for the sake of noise, it is a nuanced, emotionally devastating and powerful song. There are other bands that achieve this, but none as consistently as Tool. To balance the emotion and the technical prowess is rare. Often it is one or the other.

    • @NRG2
      @NRG2 Год назад +5

      Time signature and Meter are basically the same thing. I like to think of TOOL in meter more than signatures. Because of the way they add phrases or beats in between measures so that polyrhythms may align or Maynard can have an extra word etc…you can tell they are writing by feel, not by counting. They make statements that are concise like sentences and when people outside the band come in and chop it up you have to say well look there is a bar of 3/4 and then one of 7 and one of 5 and then there is an extra beat so Maynard can finish his line….. thats interesting but its NOT what the band is doing when they are writing. It reminds me a lot of Djembe playing in West Africa. Especially who ever is soloing at the moment. They split up the groove into polyrhythms by playing different times over the main rhythm of the Dun Dun’s. But they do not think about numbers. They are patterns that make phrases but MOST importantly you practice so that they become FEELINGS and then you express your feelings. They do not think about time and the grand masters are the greatest drummers on Earth. Its the same with TOOL. They may use some numerology in the initial construction of the songs but by the time they have the tunes practiced, you take off the training wheels and just rip it up time feel, execution and sonic creativity.

I was so happy this got put on guitar hero over so many other good choices. For me, I love this particular song because it really builds a repetitive, frustrated tension based on the subject matter. It seems to be about a relationship slowly falling apart, both in communication and feeling, and that comes out in the repetitive, aggressive way it's composed and in Maynard's voice. It's almost like he's recounting how it happened over and over in his head, repeating to himself that he can make it work again and trying to come to terns with things.
    It doesn't have the crazy moments like some other Tool songs, but I feel that the entire song is it's own 'crazy moment' because it paints in both music, tone, and tempo such a distinct, strong story and state of emotion.

    The song is mainly about themselves. They had a bit of a falling out with each other after the aenima album and the record label legal troubles. They basically forced themselves to get back together, and they created this album. The poetry that comes from the squaring off between and the circling is worth it, Finding beauty in the dissonance!!! Between supposed brothers

    Please don’t forget Opiate… the song and the album… it’s the first thing I ever heard from Tool and many of the songs are live recordings. I love Tool, but my favorites are still Opiate and Undertow just like Bleach is my favorite from Nirvana still. Little more raw and messy, but those are qualities I like and they do it so well! Just as good as the other stuff, but different.

It took awhile to realize why their music is tough to learn. I am grateful that I didn't miss this train!!!

    With Tool, you need to remember that sometimes the music is a vehicle to deliver the lyrics, sometimes the lyrics are the vehicle to deliver the music. After you finish your reactions to Tool, dive into the lyrics.
    Keep doing what you do. No complaints about what you do, but if you want to truly appreciate everything they do, look at the lyrics.

    This shits spiritual. Btw, The time signature is in 12/8 time which can also be called 6/4 time. But we count it in eight notes because makes more sense in this song. Go ahead count to 12 while listening to where it repeats. This is how time signatures work. You’ll be able to pick them out after a while. Poly rhythm means more than one rhythm at one time. For example the guitar could be playing a riff in 4/4 time and the drums could be playing in 3/4 which would would cause both lines to drift away from each other and come back together to meet after…you guessed it…12 counts altogether. Danny will play two rhythms at once on the drums alone at times.
