Love your channel Bro. I'm loving the fact that you're exploring heavier music and are truly appreciating the musicianship of the artists. Danny Carey was known as "The Octopus" because it always sounded like more than one person was playing the drums. He was just so fast and still played clean with perfect coordination. BTW he was 59 when this video was shot. The man was a beast. Keep on exploring new music. Rock and metal have such a deep well of talented bands and players. Your journey has just begun my friend. Keep doing what you're doing, I know I'm gonna be here to watch you as you discover all the Amazing bands I grew up listening to. May I make a suggestion? New sub here. I've been listening to Tool since I was in high school, 90's. But I will say I have a HUGE music variety, with people from every part of the earth playing in it. We are all one people, varied by genetic happenstance as we moved across the planet. Music and food, the 2 greatest joiners of humanity! God bless you, I'll be watching from now on!
Dude, he’s one of the greatest of all time, enjoy. “I wonder if he arranges this himself” lol 😅😅😅😅 what he plays is some of the hardest ryrhums to play, with odd timing polyrhythms and polymeter, he’s just making it look easy.
No one ever seems to notice that casual hi-hat keeping perfect time the entire song. He is playing 4 rhythms at once. And changing dynamics even on the little rimshots during the quiet parts. This guy is a machine. No better drummer living or dead. I'm sure someone will come along eventually to take the crown, but he holds it for now.
He is a practitioner of Tabla & is the most proficient polyrhythmic, odd time signature, & multiple time signature drummer on the planet. It's insane to watch.
everything Danny does, is exactly as it was planned to be. Tool is one of the rare bands where you WANT to hear the studio version of their songs live, because the songs are insanely intricate. And they rarely fail to deliver live. Tool is by far one of the most progressive bands of any genre in the last 50 years.
It's wild how these incredibly complex rhythm schemes and musical compositions, which all sort of SOUND like they're improvised, are tightly controlled and sound exactly the same as they do on the albums. True artists.
I definitely agree 100%, Danny is amazing and Tool is awesome as well. However, with that being said if you enjoyed this you should really react the Neil Peart (the drummer from the band Rush). Neil's solo "Neil Peart Live in Frankfurt" is a master piece. You should also react to some Rush songs as well.
The fact that Danny Carey didn’t name this as the hardest song for him to play in concerts speaks a lot because to my mildly trained eye, this looks like an insane double marathon of technique mixed with endurance!

I came here to post the same thing, it's actually insane when you see how amazing Danny is at 60 years old. Not to mention it's not like this was a song he had been playing for 20 years. This was the Fear Inoculum tour, the first tour they had played any song off of this album and he had perfected it already.
I love how you said you forgot about the Singer. That’s the beauty of Tool. There are no frontmen in this band. All 4 members have unique roles that create one unified sound. Unlike most groups of any genre where the singer steals the spotlight, Maynard is almost filler
Exactly, Maynard has said it himself that he doesn't consider himself a "frontman". He says that he considers the singing as just another instrument in the band, and that it's no more important than any of the other instruments. It combines with all the members of the band to complete the sound they produce.
He's a big basketball fan and wears the jersey of whatever city they're playing in. Also, he has studied African drumming and incorporates it into his playing. Great reaction!

The guy is really a special musician and I'm glad Ive had the chance to share the same timeline as him and enjoy his mastery live. Advice for anyone new to Tool...if you have the chance to see it live, do NOT miss it. It is worth whatever price is charged.

Your comment at 17:25 is honestly the Tool listening experience. It's amazing how much time and respect their musicians give to each other. Everyone gets their moment, and I've heard it's even common for their lead singer to walk off stage mid-song for a bit (or stand in the back of their arrangement) and let the rest of the band get the attention they deserve. It's funny how we all have gone from "a 10+ minute song?!" to "I need more" when listening to them. It's like time just disappears when listening to them.
You know what I love... How humble they all are. Nobody is smelling their own farts, or each others here like you see with so many bands, thinking they're the absolute shit. TOOL is a single organism made up of symbiotic beings.
Been to 3 of their shows. At one show Maynard stood stage rear the entire show, with just a dim spot and the show and the band were the highlight. They are AMAZING.
I've seen Tool 14 times and at almost every show Maynard is in the background or off to the side. He was asked why he did that and he said "I want everybody to focus on the band, my part is easy compared to them", not verbatim but that was the jist of it. I've never been disappointed going to a Tool show
To me the most amazing thing about his playing at section starting at 12:40 is the fact that every limb is playing a different rhythm....and keeping them all perfectly in sync. I've never personally seen any drummer be able to maintain polyrhythms like Danny can. Love this performance. When I first saw it, after I picked up my jaw off the floor, I had it on repeat for like a week.
This moment... and what follows, with a constant rythm, but variations on the theme on the drums, constant and changing and gaining power so slowly. And staying relax. It's one or two minutes or pure mastery
This is the truest statement I've ever heard about TOOL. I feel the same way. NO ONE sounds like them or ever will. These 4 guys play their parts so very well. It's hard to put into words what their music means to the fans... just another level than everyone else!

Compared to the original upload on YT, I've always felt the drums are mixed higher in this version. The roto-tom? korg? tabla? section (9:49) in particular, I didn't even know it existed until I watched the drum cam. Now it's my favorite part and I don't know how to explain it. The snare hits, the triplets, the lil blast beat-like fill before seamlessly going back to triplets. It's just... sec I need a tissue.
@@narcostarko Fear Innoculum is one of the best-mixed albums I've heard in a long time, the production is really good. That said, they are similar to Rush in that their live sound and arrangements are as close to the album as possible, and their live sound engineers really know their business.
@@RCAvhstape the engineers should truly be getting asuch recognition for Fear Inoculum as the artists. I have only heard a few albums so far in my life that sounds THAT level of clean. They sure made something magical with that one.
From what I heard, Danny joined them because he felt bad that no one wanted to be their drummer. What a wonderful decision that was! I HIGHLY recommend the song Parabol+Parabola. It's two songs in one. The calm, then the storm.
Rick Beato just put out a long interview with Danny on his channel maybe a week ago and Danny told the story. Danny basically lived and practiced in this small rented space that would eventually become Tool’s rehearsal space and home studio. Maynard (and I think Adam and maybe Paul too) lived next door and Danny told them they could practice in his space. Apparently after a few weeks or months of their drummers flaking out on them, Danny was like, “Hey, I’d be happy to jam with you guys”. And the rest is history.
Tool can't easily be pigeon holed. Their bassist Justin Chancellor says he thinks Tool is more of a heavy psychedelic band. Carey is supernatural. Thanks for posting.
@@jr-xs9tf What subgenre of rock? Depends, what album, what song, what portion of what song? Tool doesn't seem to give a shit about staying in one box for sake of labelling them a certain something. Metal is a generic term anyways, applies to just about anything with guitar, bass, drums that is "heavier" or "harder" than "hard rock". Tool sounds like... Tool. No one else sounds like Tool. At least to me.
All of their videos are made by one of the band members. The guitarist. He worked on Jurassic Park..With James Cameron. He does all of the creating and filming...Hes an amazingly talented visual artist.

I'm really excited that i found this channel when i did. Now that you're diving into Tool, it helps me to try to experience "hearing Tool for the first time" again. Thats probably the biggest thing that the Tool army will agree on...we all wish we could hear tool for the first time again. Keep up the good work brother.
Tool is the definition of the word band. Each is the master of their own domain yet none seeks to be center stage. The singer sees himself as just another instrument. They are all next level talented.
The only problem with the drum cam video is that it makes you focus on Danny's performance. Listening to studio version lets you appreciate the greatness of the song in general.
Exactly. Only I would say this live version is better. The studio version doesn't have the hi hat with the bass right before the guitar climax, and also doesn't have the hi hat double tap in the middle of that climax. It's just an amazing ensemble. I discovered this song a month ago and can't stop listening to it.
Not only that but different volumes for each limb, even changing the volume at certain parts between his limbs, on top of the polyrhythms without missing a beat. And his sound pads with the mandala on them each of them makes a different sound at different volumes depending on where on the pad they are hit. Which means he has to be even more precise with everything.
So happy that you are getting to experience Tool as a new listener. They are one of my favorite bands of all time! Each member is an exemplary artist in their own right, and the manner in which they record new music is so intense, each member molding their own part as a unique work of art. Danny is incredible and definitely deserves to be in the argument for greatest drummer of all time.
Danny Carey is one of the best people to ever sit behind a drum kit, and if you watch a video of each individual in the band you would feel the same about each. Obviously Maynard is gifted and has several bands

I love that you notice when he refrains from taking the focus of the song and "let it breathe." The entire band has that approach, and it's a large reason why Maynard's vocals are sometimes faded and why he is often off center and in the back of the set in their concerts now. His vocals and lyrics are meant to just be another instrument. So much respect for the art and lack of ego from every member of this band.
What never ceases to amaze me seeing the top level drummers like Danny is the way they are able to control each limb independently. Most of the song each of Danny's limbs was working a different beat or doing a different task. It's almost like he's got an independent brain for each limb - kinda like an octopus! 😄
One could confidently make the argument that Danny is the best there ever was. The complexity, the meter changes that even fascinates mathematicians, the longevity, the unprecedented skill and the EASE in which he delivers it all… astounding. Fun video, Polo. You talked about Maynards rage and intensity. If you want to WATCH that in action… check out his live performance of Sober. A rare look at Maynard actually visible during a performance (he’s often behind a curtain or way back next to Danny… almost never taking center stage and dominating as a “front man”… it’s ALWAYS about the band as a whole). Some people can’t get over the “strangeness” of his posture or whatever but… it’s like he’s on an island. The thousand yard stare, the anguish and connection he feels to his own raw Art. AMAZING video that shows his incredible level of skill and heart. Thanks again for the great video. You go ahead and pause it as much as you want… haha. Been on this journey many times but it's still fun watching newbies react. Yeah, this sounds almost identical to the studio version. "Stinkfist" is another song you're gonna wanna hear in your car. 💯%. Also....I think he wears a different jersey depending on the city he's playing in.
What makes this even crazier is that unlike in a lot of rock bands where the drummer basically just keeps the beat, usually in sync with the bassist, in Tool, Danny Carrey is playing rhythms that rarely sync with what the rest of the band is playing.
Well. They are though. It's extraordinarily well thought out. But at the same time, you know they had a vision, a structure, a time signature progression they wanted to work with. Then, they are all such masterful musicians, that I have to believe that some of this is related to the flow state. Anyways. Danny, Justin, and Adam create the music to be stand-alone. Then Maynard writes and sings the vocals on top. In most bands, the instrumentals "support" the lead singer. With TOOL, each instrument (I consider Maynard's voice the fourth) has it's spectacular story. You can focus totally on one of them throughout an entire song and follow that journey - which is a complete masterpiece in itself. When you do that, the rest of the band is supporting THAT musician. It's wild. The pinnacle of innovation, expertise, collaboration, symbolism, and connection to the human condition and the divine. No one sounds like TOOL, because no one is capable of even remotely replicating the intelligence, instrumental mastery, and emphasis on each artist being a "soloist" in each song, at all times. Fucking brilliant.
BRO! This is what they do live. I'm telling you "Lateralus" 3,5,8,beat. Fibonacci sequence. The lyrics are just as deep as the music. A thing to understand about Tool is the musicians Wright the music first, then Maynard listen to it and then Wrights the lyrics. Their progression over the years is insane. Danny is the centerpiece of the group. I closed my eyes during the concert and it sounded like there were 2-3 drummers. Amazing keeping all those tempos

Since you asked, this live performance is pretty faithful to the original studio track. But I would still encourage you to give the studio version a listen because the sound/production quality is just impeccable. Incredible song.
I've been a Tool and Rush fan for forever and seen them both live many times. All for the drummers....Neil was a drumming GOD and Danny is an alien from another planet lol. The two best to ever sit behind a set
Since you're enjoying them so much, you might want to think about doing their whole discography from the beginning. It's really interesting to see their progression from each album. They only have 5 whole albums and an ep. And some of the tracks aren't really traditional songs but are interesting to listen to.
It’s pure class, when you can search his name and find many posts of him poppin up at high school talent shows, or random events as a sit in drummer. He smiles and has fun no matter who he’s jammin with
Pneuma is just a phenomenally well constructed piece of music. Danny definitely kicks ass with those fills, but every part works together to make this song so satisfying to listen to. You can just see it in the reaction from Lost in Vegas, it killed those guys. This is definitely still metal, you can hear it in the style of drumming, the distortion on the guitars, and just the complex structure of the song. I think those are the kinds of things that define metal more than just being heavy and aggressive.
A couple of things: 1) Fun fact. Danny is actually an octopus, and that's why he's such an amazing drummer 2) Pneuma is one of my favorite Tool songs. Fun fact. Pneuma means "the vital spirit, soul, or creative force of a person" so the lyric: "Pneuma Reach out and beyond Wake up remember We are born of one breath, one word We are all one spark, eyes full of wonder" becomes even more beautiful and wonderful to me. 3) Other amazing songs by Tool you should check out (my favorites), if you haven't already are: a. As someone who used to try and learn drumming, this is a masterclass in technique. It's amazing how little movement his arms make. It's all in the wrists. This was a mistake I made all the time. Drummers like Carey, Peart, etc are inspiring to hear and watch.
I’ve heard Plant and Page say that Bonham’s power was in his wrists as well…but watching him….I can’t see it. As someone who studied drumming, was Bonzo’s power in his wrists too?
That's what makes drummer like Peart and Carey stand out from 99.9% of drummers out there. Plus the fact Danny is 60+ and still plays like he does is inspiring as well.
When non-drummers see this, they are very impressed and can see how incredibly talented he is. When a drummer watches this, it's fairly mind-blowing to see/hear his precision, dynamics, limb independence, posture, stick control, endurance, power, complexity of arrangement, sense of time and time keeping, concentration, joy, and memory. There are not many drummers who after long careers can pull off all of that at once. Truly a master of his craft, and inspiring to see what a human can do when they apply their will and time in striving for excellence.
Had to stop video at "one foot nailed down" just to say I've seen this drum cam many times and ALWAYS get goosebumps. Always. Singing along with it, too...one of the great things to watch are people's reactions, I'm sure you will be blown away! ! Never get tired of it!
I think it's cool you reacted to this so early in, what I hope to be, your Tool journey. You'll appreciate the other songs much more now. And don't worry about the pauses in the reactions, just keep keeping them genuine.
I like that you noticed how he's not trying to outshine the band. You'll learn as you listen more that they ALL are that way. Maynard usually stands BEHIND the drummer because he doesn't want to be "the front man". They all respect each other so much and treat each other as fully equal and crucial parts to the band.
On top of the amazing playing (which is a given with Danny) it is his posture, his completely relaxed state, how much fun he is having and the fact that he is still innovating and growing at 60 years old. He just really enjoys what he does and stays humble. Also, in damn good shape!
I like how you give a thoughtful reaction that’s not dramatized. I think you’d enjoy Tool’s 10,000 Days (song is an emotional, beautiful and powerful tribute to his mom after she passed). Also Tool’s Right in Two has a very powerful message with amazing music/drums. Both would make great reaction videos. For your own enjoyment, you should definitely consider watching Metallica’s S&M videos (1 & 2). They play with a symphony. The power of Metallica combined with the beauty/power of a symphony is a must watch/listen experience!
I promise you, Tool fans are dedicated and always wanting to see more. If you keep pumping out Tool reactions, they will keep showing up to watch it. Also, I don't think I'd call Tool a metal band. They're more like a kind of alternative industrial rock. I can't think of anyone with a similar sound or style to them. Unlike say, Slipknot, which there are many bands with a similar feel or sound. Honestly they're kind of in a genre of their own, in my mind.
Check out the self titled album by Lucid Planet from 2015. Definitely not as amazing as Tool, but it’s like they got sick of waiting so long for a new album and tried to just make their own.

In reference to your comment about Danny letting the song breathe, and coming in when it was his time to shine....I've noticed that groups like Tool that have such a wealth of amazing musicians tend to shift the focus around from one instrument to another, showcasing all of the incredible talent they have on tap. Bands like Tool, Rush, and Yes do this so seamlessly that you don't even see the transition as each one takes the spotlight. I think this is why a lot of their songs tend to be long, as they need that extra time to give everyone some space to spread their wings. One thing about Tool especially that I like is that where most groups always have the vocalist front and center almost constantly, Maynard moves in and out of the song just like the others. You can see it reflected by the way he positions and moves himself on stage in live performances, and in studio recordings, if you listen, you'll notice his voice isn't always at the front of the mix.

There are a lot of great drummers out there. Some of them are even faster. But there is no polyrhythmic drummer as good as Danny Carrie out there. He is just the best and he makes it sound the best which is one thing I love about it he’s not just trying to go super sonic. He actually makes it sound good and goes really well with what the other band members are doing. Any tool reaction you do will bring me to your channel.

The song really starts this way, and it’s generally a decent recording. GREAT Tool song to react to. Off the most recent album, this has worked its way into my top 5 Tool, and of those, I can’t say that one is better than any other, they’re all good. Just like the band in general and all their work. Tool is, well Tool, it doesn’t need words or explaining, it just, is, and it’s all good.

There are currently 91 types of metal. Tool would be in the realm of progressive metal, a broad fusion music genre melding heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud "aggression" and amplified guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter.

My parents never raised my brother and I on "kids music", thank god haha! I was raised on 60s-70s classic blues rock and some old school reggae. My dad always played this one reggae band Black Uhuru. I had totally forgotten about them, as I became a die-hard metalhead, basically only listening to metal for the past 20 years. You saying "He's from Africa" reminded me of Black Uhuru and their song "Whole World is Africa". Danny Carey is one of the most underrated drummers ever, his fills and his runs are almost unhuman, he can do things with one hand, that most people can't do with 2 hands.

Danny Carey! There isn't anyone out there that would argue against Danny being considered one of the greatest drummers of all time. Heavy roots in jazz which is the most complex most difficult music to play. Danny is a beast! The syncopation, time signatures, progression, impossible on paper complexity, yet it works and sounds good. Music theorists quite enjoy him.

Danny Carey was known as "The Octopus" because it always sounded like more than one person was playing the drums. He was just so fast and still played clean with perfect coordination. BTW he was 59 when this video was shot. The man was a beast. Keep on exploring new music. Rock and metal have such a deep well of talented bands and players. Your journey has just begun my friend. New sub here. I've been listening to Tool since I was in high school, 90's. But I will say I have a HUGE music variety, with people from every part of the earth playing in it. We are all one people, varied by genetic happenstance as we moved across the planet. Music and food, the 2 greatest joiners of humanity!

No one ever seems to notice that casual hi-hat keeping perfect time the entire song. He is playing 4 rhythms at once. And changing dynamics even on the little rimshots during the quiet parts. This guy is a machine. No better drummer living or dead. I'm sure someone will come along eventually to take the crown, but he holds it for now.
If I practiced for a really long time, I think I could do the high hat part…

everything Danny does, is exactly as it was planned to be. Tool is one of the rare bands where you WANT to hear the studio version of their songs live, because the songs are insanely intricate. And they rarely fail to deliver live.
Tool is by far one of the most progressive bands of any genre in the last 50 years.

I definitely agree 100%, Danny is amazing and Tool is awesome as well. However, with that being said if you enjoyed this you should really react the Neil Peart (the drummer from the band Rush). Neil's solo "Neil Peart Live in Frankfurt" is a master piece. You should also react to some Rush songs as well.
Was really cool that he got to play with Alex and Geddy at that Taylor Hawkins Tribute in LA. Wonder if that was a bucket list moment for him.

This was the Fear Inoculum tour, the first tour they had played any song off of this album and he had perfected it already.

Exactly, Maynard has said it himself that he doesn't consider himself a "frontman". He says that he considers the singing as just another instrument in the band, and that it's no more important than any of the other instruments. It combines with all the members of the band to complete the sound they produce.
He's a big basketball fan and wears the jersey of whatever city they're playing in. Also, he has studied African drumming and incorporates it into his playing. Great reaction!

Your comment at 17:25 is honestly the Tool listening experience. It's amazing how much time and respect their musicians give to each other. Everyone gets their moment, and I've heard it's even common for their lead singer to walk off stage mid-song for a bit (or stand in the back of their arrangement) and let the rest of the band get the attention they deserve. It's funny how we all have gone from "a 10+ minute song?!" to "I need more" when listening to them. It's like time just disappears when listening to them.

TOOL is a single organism made up of symbiotic beings.
Been to 3 of their shows. At one show Maynard stood stage rear the entire show, with just a dim spot and the show and the band were the highlight. They are AMAZING.
I've seen Tool 14 times and at almost every show Maynard is in the background or off to the side. He was asked why he did that and he said "I want everybody to focus on the band, my part is easy compared to them", not verbatim but that was the jist of it. I've never been disappointed going to a Tool show

To me the most amazing thing about his playing at section starting at 12:40 is the fact that every limb is playing a different rhythm....and keeping them all perfectly in sync. I've never personally seen any drummer be able to maintain polyrhythms like Danny can. Love this performance. When I first saw it, after I picked up my jaw off the floor, I had it on repeat for like a week.
This moment... and what follows, with a constant rythm, but variations on the theme on the drums, constant and changing and gaining power so slowly. And staying relax.

Tool's genre is Tool. No other band like them. I guess if you wanted to find a box to put them in, it would be progressive metal.

Compared to the original upload on YT, I've always felt the drums are mixed higher in this version. The roto-tom? korg? tabla? section (9:49) in particular, I didn't even know it existed until I watched the drum cam. Now it's my favorite part and I don't know how to explain it. The snare hits, the triplets, the lil blast beat-like fill before seamlessly going back to triplets. It's just... sec I need a tissue.
@@narcostarko Fear Innoculum is one of the best-mixed albums I've heard in a long time, the production is really good. That said, they are similar to Rush in that their live sound and arrangements are as close to the album as possible, and their live sound engineers really know their business.
@@RCAvhstape the engineers should truly be getting asuch recognition for Fear Inoculum as the artists. I have only heard a few albums so far in my life that sounds THAT level of clean. They sure made something magical with that one.

I HIGHLY recommend the song Parabol+Parabola. It's two songs in one. The calm, then the storm.
Rick Beato just put out a long interview with Danny on his channel maybe a week ago and Danny told the story.
Danny basically lived and practiced in this small rented space that would eventually become Tool’s rehearsal space and home studio. Maynard (and I think Adam and maybe Paul too) lived next door and Danny told them they could practice in his space. Apparently after a few weeks or months of their drummers flaking out on them, Danny was like, “Hey, I’d be happy to jam with you guys”. And the rest is history.
Tool can't easily be pigeon holed. Their bassist Justin Chancellor says he thinks Tool is more of a heavy psychedelic band. Carey is supernatural. Thanks for posting.

The studio version doesn't have the hi hat with the bass right before the guitar climax, and also doesn't have the hi hat double tap in the middle of that climax. It's just an amazing ensemble. I discovered this song a month ago and can't stop listening to it.

Danny has quadruple limb independence. Different time signature with each limb at the same time. Its brilliant.
Not only that but different volumes for each limb, even changing the volume at certain parts between his limbs, on top of the polyrhythms without missing a beat. And his sound pads with the mandala on them each of them makes a different sound at different volumes depending on where on the pad they are hit. Which means he has to be even more precise with everything.
So happy that you are getting to experience Tool as a new listener. They are one of my favorite bands of all time! Each member is an exemplary artist in their own right, and the manner in which they record new music is so intense, each member molding their own part as a unique work of art. Danny is incredible and definitely deserves to be in the argument for greatest drummer of all time.

I love that you notice when he refrains from taking the focus of the song and "let it breathe." The entire band has that approach, and it's a large reason why Maynard's vocals are sometimes faded and why he is often off center and in the back of the set in their concerts now. His vocals and lyrics are meant to just be another instrument. So much respect for the art and lack of ego from every member of this band.

What never ceases to amaze me seeing the top level drummers like Danny is the way they are able to control each limb independently. Most of the song each of Danny's limbs was working a different beat or doing a different task. It's almost like he's got an independent brain for each limb - kinda like an octopus! 😄

One could confidently make the argument that Danny is the best there ever was. The complexity, the meter changes that even fascinates mathematicians, the longevity, the unprecedented skill and the EASE in which he delivers it all… astounding.

Some people can’t get over the “strangeness” of his posture or whatever but… it’s like he’s on an island. The thousand yard stare, the anguish and connection he feels to his own raw Art. AMAZING video that shows his incredible level of skill and heart.

Been on this journey many times but it's still fun watching newbies react. Yeah, this sounds almost identical to the studio version. "Stinkfist" is another song you're gonna wanna hear in your car. 💯%. Also....I think he wears a different jersey depending on the city he's playing in.
What makes this even crazier is that unlike in a lot of rock bands where the drummer basically just keeps the beat, usually in sync with the bassist, in Tool, Danny Carrey is playing rhythms that rarely sync with what the rest of the band is playing.
Well. They are though. It's extraordinarily well thought out. But at the same time, you know they had a vision, a structure, a time signature progression they wanted to work with. Then, they are all such masterful musicians, that I have to believe that some of this is related to the flow state. Anyways. Danny, Justin, and Adam create the music to be stand-alone. Then Maynard writes and sings the vocals on top. In most bands, the instrumentals "support" the lead singer. With TOOL, each instrument (I consider Maynard's voice the fourth) has it's spectacular story. You can focus totally on one of them throughout an entire song and follow that journey - which is a complete masterpiece in itself. When you do that, the rest of the band is supporting THAT musician. It's wild. The pinnacle of innovation, expertise, collaboration, symbolism, and connection to the human condition and the divine. No one sounds like TOOL, because no one is capable of even remotely replicating the intelligence, instrumental mastery, and emphasis on each artist being a "soloist" in each song, at all times. Fucking brilliant.

Danny is the centerpiece of the group. I closed my eyes during the concert and it sounded like there were 2-3 drummers. Amazing keeping all those tempos

Since you're enjoying them so much, you might want to think about doing their whole discography from the beginning. It's really interesting to see their progression from each album. They only have 5 whole albums and an ep. And some of the tracks aren't really traditional songs but are interesting to listen to.
One of the best drummers ever! Tool is a phenomenal band because of every piece. This concentrates on just one and it is so beautiful.
It’s pure class, when you can search his name and find many posts of him poppin up at high school talent shows, or random events as a sit in drummer. He smiles and has fun no matter who he’s jammin with
Pneuma is just a phenomenally well constructed piece of music. Danny definitely kicks ass with those fills, but every part works together to make this song so satisfying to listen to. You can just see it in the reaction from Lost in Vegas, it killed those guys.
This is definitely still metal, you can hear it in the style of drumming, the distortion on the guitars, and just the complex structure of the song. I think those are the kinds of things that define metal more than just being heavy and aggressive.
I never get tired of seeing this video, and watching reactions to it. Danny Carey is just SO. GOOD.

As someone who used to try and learn drumming, this is a masterclass in technique. It's amazing how little movement his arms make. It's all in the wrists. This was a mistake I made all the time. Drummers like Carey, Peart, etc are inspiring to hear and watch.
I’ve heard Plant and Page say that Bonham’s power was in his wrists as well…but watching him….I can’t see it. As someone who studied drumming, was Bonzo’s power in his wrists too?
That's what makes drummer like Peart and Carey stand out from 99.9% of drummers out there. Plus the fact Danny is 60+ and still plays like he does is inspiring as well.

When non-drummers see this, they are very impressed and can see how incredibly talented he is. When a drummer watches this, it's fairly mind-blowing to see/hear his precision, dynamics, limb independence, posture, stick control, endurance, power, complexity of arrangement, sense of time and time keeping, concentration, joy, and memory. There are not many drummers who after long careers can pull off all of that at once. Truly a master of his craft, and inspiring to see what a human can do when they apply their will and time in striving for excellence.

I like that you noticed how he's not trying to outshine the band. You'll learn as you listen more that they ALL are that way. Maynard usually stands BEHIND the drummer because he doesn't want to be "the front man". They all respect each other so much and treat each other as fully equal and crucial parts to the band.
On top of the amazing playing (which is a given with Danny) it is his posture, his completely relaxed state, how much fun he is having and the fact that he is still innovating and growing at 60 years old. He just really enjoys what he does and stays humble. Also, in damn good shape!
I like how you give a thoughtful reaction that’s not dramatized. I think you’d enjoy Tool’s 10,000 Days (song is an emotional, beautiful and powerful tribute to his mom after she passed). Also Tool’s Right in Two has a very powerful message with amazing music/drums. Both would make great reaction videos.
For your own enjoyment, you should definitely consider watching Metallica’s S&M videos (1 & 2). They play with a symphony. The power of Metallica combined with the beauty/power of a symphony is a must watch/listen experience!
I promise you, Tool fans are dedicated and always wanting to see more. If you keep pumping out Tool reactions, they will keep showing up to watch it.
Also, I don't think I'd call Tool a metal band. They're more like a kind of alternative industrial rock. I can't think of anyone with a similar sound or style to them. Unlike say, Slipknot, which there are many bands with a similar feel or sound. Honestly they're kind of in a genre of their own, in my mind.
Check out the self titled album by Lucid Planet from 2015. Definitely not as amazing as Tool, but it’s like they got sick of waiting so long for a new album and tried to just make their own.

In reference to your comment about Danny letting the song breathe, and coming in when it was his time to shine....I've noticed that groups like Tool that have such a wealth of amazing musicians tend to shift the focus around from one instrument to another, showcasing all of the incredible talent they have on tap. Bands like Tool, Rush, and Yes do this so seamlessly that you don't even see the transition as each one takes the spotlight. I think this is why a lot of their songs tend to be long, as they need that extra time to give everyone some space to spread their wings. One thing about Tool especially that I like is that where most groups always have the vocalist front and center almost constantly, Maynard moves in and out of the song just like the others. You can see it reflected by the way he positions and moves himself on stage in live performances, and in studio recordings, if you listen, you'll notice his voice isn't always at the front of the mix.

Someday you'll listen to "Chocolate Chip Trip" and when you do you'll hear just what a genius Danny Carey is. The whole thing was just on a whim while they were recording Fear Inoculum and they decided to keep it on the album.

There are a lot of great drummers out there. Some of them are even faster. But there is no polyrhythmic drummer as good as Danny Carrie out there. He is just the best and he makes it sound the best which is one thing I love about it he’s not just trying to go super sonic. He actually makes it sound good and goes really well with what the other band members are doing. Any tool reaction you do will bring me to your channel.

GREAT Tool song to react to. Off the most recent album, this has worked its way into my top 5 Tool, and of those, I can’t say that one is better than any other, they’re all good. Just like the band in general and all their work. Tool is, well Tool, it doesn’t need words or explaining, it just, is, and it’s all good.

Tool would be in the realm of progressive metal, a broad fusion music genre melding heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud "aggression" and amplified guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter.

Bro this just sparked a memory from my childhood! I'm 33 now, and I can't believe I just remembered this. My parents never raised my brother and I on "kids music", thank god haha! I was raised on 60s-70s classic blues rock and some old school reggae.
My dad always played this one reggae band Black Uhuru. I had totally forgotten about them, as I became a die-hard metalhead, basically only listening to metal for the past 20 years.
You saying "He's from Africa" reminded me of Black Uhuru and their song "Whole World is Africa".

Danny Carey is one of the most underrated drummers ever, his fills and his runs are almost unhuman, he can do things with one hand, that most people can't do with 2 hands.

Danny Carey! There isn't anyone out there that would argue against Danny being considered one of the greatest drummers of all time. Heavy roots in jazz which is the most complex most difficult music to play. Danny is a beast! The syncopation, time signatures, progression, impossible on paper complexity, yet it works and sounds good. Music theorists quite enjoy him.
