I was really deep into Tool a decade ago. I put it down for several years and then recently dove back in a couple of months ago. It was almost...almost like hearing Lateralus for the first time. It was bad ass.

@poloreacts this is definitely another great car banger for you. Hearing this in the car is what really changed my perspective on some things. I think it’s interesting how you pick up tool and Pink Floyd at the same time, which are my two favorite “experience” groups of you know what I mean. Check out A Perfect Circle sometime if you want similar vibes. Another Maynard project you’d probably enjoy.
Lateralus is Tool at their absolute apex. The entire album is flawless. The hungriest, most ambitious, free, vulnerable, introspective, healing and striving for something deeper. The album closes on a trilogy of songs that create a singular musical piece that might be the most amazing moment in rock music. That might be hyperbolic, but maybe not. This album will never be replicated. The Lateralus fans are the monks. Welcome to the fold. Spiral out.
To me it feels like that perfect crossroads album that fused their earlier albums with the band they would go on to become after this album. When I grew up Aenima was my fav album of theirs for years because I was that magic age when it released, but I think this Album has overtaken it.
This is one of the greatest songs ever created. I used to tear up listening to it. Then about three years ago my wife was diagnosed with late term cancer,she is doing well now after a brutal battle but will be dependent on medication for her entire life. When he sings embrace my desire to...and then conveys all of these deep human feelings including weeping like a widow I can't help but she's a tear. I thought I would feel that for a while and was always overthinking and worrying. This song speaks to my soul on a level that no other song does. It's fucking beautiful and painful and full of wonder and love and open-mindedness, desire and true need. It's terrifying and comforting at the same time. Just incredible. Truly one of the greatest pieces of music ever.

I've had decades to mull over Tool's discography, and while my #1 of theirs is an endless cycle of "what I'm hearing right now is #1", I keep coming back to this one as my #1 more than the others. Let's be real, this song is original, unique, creative, complex, meaningful, and just a flat out banger.

Danny is an earthquake on drums. Justin brings the thunder with the bass. Adam scorches the sky with crackling bolts of lightning on the guitar. Then Maynard pipes in with the disembodied voice of a god. Tool is Mount Olympus.
Tool's music has so many sounds that aren't "normal" sounds you would expect from the instruments they are playing so I never really thought about where they were coming from. so when I saw the Pneuma drum cam video I was astounded by how many of those sounds were coming from Danny, and I too found a new level of appreciation for him and his skills.
I love it when people find this out lol, he is the foundation for their music, he really is the metronome and the driver it’s just crazy watching him. One time I saw them me he did like a 15 minute drum solo that was so insane and mind bending you really didn’t even notice it! 😂
I was a casual TOOL fan back when this came out. I knew their radio stuff, Sober, Schism, Aenima....A friend of mine insisted that I go see them. The first time I heard this was in concert. This song was like a religious experience. When it was over, I said, "What in the hell was that?" He just said, "probably the greatest song ever written." 🌀🤘

I love how Maynard's voice practically acts as an instrument in their songs, it's so diverse and adds so much to the song. It's just a part of the music and doesn't take over the songs, every instrument has it's place and stands out

I'll be "That guy." Hip hop has bars, Tool's got little easter eggs like this. Tool wrote this song to the fibbonacci sequence. Which is a geometrical patern seen through out nature, when you use arcs to connect the boxes that the fibonacci sequence outlines it makes a spiral, it's closely related to the "Golden Ratio" and is one example of what has come to be called "Sacred Geometry." The numerical sequence goes 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144. The introduction section of the song is 01:12 long (0, 1, 1, 2 are the first four numbers in the sequence). The first verse starts at 97 seconds, which is approximately 1.618 minutes - (The Golden Ratio) Each verse is 55 seconds long (11th # in sequence). Also the "chugging" or "reving" you're talking about on the guitar is a combination of distortion effect, and "palm mutes" on the picking hand. Adam Jones is a Master of palm mutes, it's a nifty way of being able to play the same riff but have it occupy different spaces in the arrangement, Driving, undertone, build up. You can add a lot of dynamics to a song just by changing it up between palm-mutes, clear/open tones, and switching the effects you use on your guitar.
The cool thing as well is the lyrics following the fib seq. are true to how we perceive light as we grow within the womb. Tieing in the concept of birth (the heartbeat), life, death, and the journey, the spiral.
Yeah you're definitely hooked. Finding new meanings and feelings on multiple listens is part of the fun of Tool. Lots of layers, lots of little bits and sounds you'll continue to discover, especially on this album which is mixed SO unbelievably well. It alternates between stank face and head trip for 79 minutes
This song reinspired me for an entire lifetime when it came out when I was in college. And it still is. This song taught me to embrace my own creative spirit, to follow my whims, to not get caught up in the what ifs, to not second guess myself at every turn, to trust my instincts, to embrace the daily energy of life. Don't overthink, just do. Live. To me it's the ultimate YOLO song. Live in this moment and embrace the beauty of everything that inhabits it. It will only come once. Seize it. One of the most important songs in my life's journey.

That video only explains half of it. 😁 The golden ratio is the natural log of Phi. Phi is the square root of 5 +1 over 2. Phi is an irrational number. By definition irrational numbers can't be expressed as a perfect ratio or fraction. The Fibonacci sequence when dividing a term over the next term *approximates* the natural log of Phi. But that division intrinsically is rational. Since the Fibonacci approximation is inherently rational, and the Golden Ratio is inherently irrational; This dichotomy is alluded to throughout the lyrics. "Over-thinking Over-analyzing separates the body (Golden Ratio) from the mind (Fibonacci)" "Separates my wind (Golden Ratio) from will (Fibonacci)" The message of the song strongly suggests to stop "interpreting" and just "experience" things, life, music, existence. Something that atheists and the devout should agree on is that only God is omniscient; the sum of human knowledge is not synonymous. The "revving" I believe you're referring to is called palm muting. When you rest the palm of your pick hand on the bridge of the guitar while you pick, it slightly dampens the vibration of the string and especially when played with distortion through an amp, creates that heavy chug chug chugga chugga chug. Stay with the path and you'll get into the djentier bands Tool helped influence and see the true depths of chug.
ayyyyy brother man congrats on 100k! i subbed yesterday and you were at 99.9k lol i love to see open minded, genuine souls amongst the sea of fake, attention seeking channels on youtube nowadays. i really appreciate your open mindedness when it comes to music of all types. i always say it is so dismissive when people claim to hate a song or a bands etc. in any piece of art, there is something going on within the piece that you can find to appreciate and get into. be it the kick drum pattern, bass lines, background vocals, melodies etc. when people say they hate something it’s because they already have their bias and with that their preconceived notions just look for something to not like about it. therefore they can say so quickly that they don’t like it. turning their minds off to giving the piece any sort of chance keep on being you man ✊👍👏🙏

This song was a true gateway for me. When I was a young chap, I would listen to this song eyes closed, ears wide open. I would listen to this song over and over and over, each time focusing my ears on something new, follow the drums one time, the bass the next, the guitar, the vocals. Each layer to the song took me somewhere new. When I needed to get through something rough, this song was the background track to my life. I could lose myself in this track so easily. I didn't discover Tool until Schism hit the radio in my area in 2001. As soon as I heard the full album & heard this title track, I knew I had found the greatest collection of musical talent ever to happen upon each other. I've been a fanatic ever since.
In my mind, this is one of the greatest pieces of musical art ever created. It’s always such a joy to see people experience it for the first time. This album dropped at one of the lowest places of my life, and it truly helped pull me out of a downward spiral. The song “the patient”, will always have a special place in my heart. Great video!

This has probably already been said, but the thing I love most about this song, is that the entire message is about branching out and experiencing new things. This means that by listening to it for the first time, you are basically living the message in the song, even if only for only a few minutes. The song itself is basically a self fulfilling prophecy, and that's dope.
Man, this song is such a masterpiece. That last verse that kicks off with "With my feet upon the ground I lose myself between the sounds..." gives me chills EVERY time haha.
One reason why those Adam Jones solos just hit different might be because he experiences Synaesthesia - extra connections between senses, where someone might experience tastes looking at certain colours - Adam Jones "sees/feels" sound, so he's the one who takes the longest in the studio "sculpting" how exactly he wants his guitar parts to sound, because otherwise it would "feel wrong", like a sauce with too much salt or a landscape painting where the trees are the wrong shade of green

Love the MJ analogy, so true. And just like MJ, that greatness was the result of taking raw talent and then working harder than anyone else to perfect their craft. I don't any band spends more time crafting a single song than Tool. You’re right tool is not a band, it’s a force to be reckoned with. The arrangements in their songs just cannot even be gotten close to buy other bands. They just don’t have that type of mindset and to have 4 people meet up and be able to pull this off is just like an absolute miracle, I am so glad you have found tour and opened your mind. A lot of people listen to tool, but don’t read the lyrics, it looks like you kind of read the lyrics off to the side and I hope you do because it takes each song to an even bigger level! As if it even could be. So, if you haven’t read the words, please do. Maynard has said that he thinks of himself as an instrument in the band, and just as they put all of their effort into their instruments, he tries to top them with his lyrics and how he sings his lyrics, because, as you know, he has like 20 different voices, and a voice to cover every mood of every part of a song to make the song that more poignant and perfect. Sorry I can’t stop writing, because just seeing you go down the tool rabbit hole brings me back to when I did it, and I love it. It is so awesome to see someone hear this stuff for the first time and get their reaction, and their honest reaction to something that we will probably never hear again musically
In my opinion this song is the pinnacle of the cream of the crop for Tool. It’s not necessarily always my favorite of the moment but it’s always the best. I don’t think this album will ever be topped for me.

To me it feels like that perfect crossroads album that fused their earlier albums with the band they would go on to become after this album. When I grew up Aenima was my fav album of theirs for years because I was that magic age when it released, but I think this Album has overtaken it.

This is one of the greatest songs ever created. I used to tear up listening to it. Then about three years ago my wife was diagnosed with late term cancer,she is doing well now after a brutal battle but will be dependent on medication for her entire life. When he sings embrace my desire to...and then conveys all of these deep human feelings including weeping like a widow I can't help but she's a tear. I thought I would feel that for a while and was always overthinking and worrying. This song speaks to my soul on a level that no other song does. It's fucking beautiful and painful and full of wonder and love and open-mindedness, desire and true need. It's terrifying and comforting at the same time. Just incredible. Truly one of the greatest pieces of music ever.

It may just be me, but I appreciate Danny's drumming even more after having watched his drum cam.
Tool's music has so many sounds that aren't "normal" sounds you would expect from the instruments they are playing so I never really thought about where they were coming from.
so when I saw the Pneuma drum cam video I was astounded by how many of those sounds were coming from Danny, and I too found a new level of appreciation for him and his skills.

I love how Maynard's voice practically acts as an instrument in their songs, it's so diverse and adds so much to the song. It's just a part of the music and doesn't take over the songs, every instrument has it's place and stands out

I'll be "That guy." Hip hop has bars, Tool's got little easter eggs like this. Tool wrote this song to the fibbonacci sequence. Which is a geometrical patern seen through out nature, when you use arcs to connect the boxes that the fibonacci sequence outlines it makes a spiral, it's closely related to the "Golden Ratio" and is one example of what has come to be called "Sacred Geometry." Also the "chugging" or "reving" you're talking about on the guitar is a combination of distortion effect, and "palm mutes" on the picking hand. Adam Jones is a Master of palm mutes, it's a nifty way of being able to play the same riff but have it occupy different spaces in the arrangement, Driving, undertone, build up. You can add a lot of dynamics to a song just by changing it up between palm-mutes, clear/open tones, and switching the effects you use on your guitar.

Yeah you're definitely hooked. Finding new meanings and feelings on multiple listens is part of the fun of Tool. Lots of layers, lots of little bits and sounds you'll continue to discover, especially on this album which is mixed SO unbelievably well. It alternates between stank face and head trip for 79 minutes
This song reinspired me for an entire lifetime when it came out when I was in college. And it still is. This song taught me to embrace my own creative spirit, to follow my whims, to not get caught up in the what ifs, to not second guess myself at every turn, to trust my instincts, to embrace the daily energy of life. That video only explains half of it. 😁 The golden ratio is the natural log of Phi. Phi is the square root of 5 +1 over 2. Phi is an irrational number. By definition irrational numbers can't be expressed as a perfect ratio or fraction. The Fibonacci sequence when dividing a term over the next term *approximates* the natural log of Phi. But that division intrinsically is rational. The "revving" I believe you're referring to is called palm muting. When you rest the palm of your pick hand on the bridge of the guitar while you pick, it slightly dampens the vibration of the string and especially when played with distortion through an amp, creates that heavy chug chug chugga chugga chug. Stay with the path and you'll get into the djentier bands Tool helped influence and see the true depths of chug.

i love to see open minded, genuine souls amongst the sea of fake, attention seeking channels on youtube nowadays. i really appreciate your open mindedness when it comes to music of all types. i always say it is so dismissive when people claim to hate a song or a bands etc. in any piece of art, there is something going on within the piece that you can find to appreciate and get into. be it the kick drum pattern, bass lines, background vocals, melodies etc. when people say they hate something it’s because they already have their bias and with that their preconceived notions just look for something to not like about it. therefore they can say so quickly that they don’t like it. turning their minds off to giving the piece any sort of chance

I didn't discover Tool until Schism hit the radio in my area in 2001. As soon as I heard the full album & heard this title track, I knew I had found the greatest collection of musical talent ever to happen upon each other. I've been a fanatic ever since.
In my mind, this is one of the greatest pieces of musical art ever created. It’s always such a joy to see people experience it for the first time. This album dropped at one of the lowest places of my life, and it truly helped pull me out of a downward spiral. The song “the patient”, will always have a special place in my heart. Great video!

This has probably already been said, but the thing I love most about this song, is that the entire message is about branching out and experiencing new things. This means that by listening to it for the first time, you are basically living the message in the song, even if only for only a few minutes. The song itself is basically a self fulfilling prophecy, and that's dope.

One reason why those Adam Jones solos just hit different might be because he experiences Synaesthesia - extra connections between senses, where someone might experience tastes looking at certain colours - Adam Jones "sees/feels" sound, so he's the one who takes the longest in the studio "sculpting" how exactly he wants his guitar parts to sound, because otherwise it would "feel wrong", like a sauce with too much salt or a landscape painting where the trees are the wrong shade of green

I don't any band spends more time crafting a single song than Tool. They just don’t have that type of mindset and to have 4 people meet up and be able to pull this off is just like an absolute miracle, I am so glad you have found tour and opened your mind. A lot of people listen to tool, but don’t read the lyrics, it looks like you kind of read the lyrics off to the side and I hope you do because it takes each song to an even bigger level! As if it even could be. So, if you haven’t read the words, please do. Maynard has said that he thinks of himself as an instrument in the band, and just as they put all of their effort into their instruments, he tries to top them with his lyrics and how he sings his lyrics, because, as you know, he has like 20 different voices, and a voice to cover every mood of every part of a song to make the song that more poignant and perfect. Sorry I can’t stop writing, because just seeing you go down the tool rabbit hole brings me back to when I did it, and I love it. It is so awesome to see someone hear this stuff for the first time and get their reaction, and their honest reaction to something that we will probably never hear again musically

In my opinion this song is the pinnacle of the cream of the crop for Tool. It’s not necessarily always my favorite of the moment but it’s always the best. I don’t think this album will ever be topped for me.
Saw Tool for the first time at Lalapalooza in the Gorge in George, WA back in 93! Every show i have been to has been incredible! Go see them while ya can
