The video of Danny Carey, their drummer, playing Pneuma is outstanding. It’s during a live show and Tool’s sound matches their studio recordings.
I have probably seen that video more than 30 times. Absolutely mindblowing.

Gotta disagree there. I love listening Tool, but when I saw them live it was an awful performance. Lots of annoyingly long repetitive riffs between songs, very little if any interaction with the crowd. They didn't play any of their hits. At one point Maynard stopped in the middle of a song, said I need to make a phone call and walked off stage for about 10 minutes. We all stood there in silence confused. Then they never even finished the song they were playing. This was around 2006-2008, they were touring with Mars Volta I think but honestly even the opening band was really bad. It was so soft and boring my girlfriend and I were literally falling asleep. I've been to 100+ rock and metal shows and festivals and again I LOVE Tools music but that was the worst concert experience of my life. I was hugely disappointed.

@@ryantxbbq I think I agree with nate jones, its possible it was an off night for them, either way I'd be disappointed as well. I've seen tool twice, first time in 2016 when they toured with Primus and the second time in 2017. The first concert i saw of theirs was, in my opinion, flawless. The venue they played at was a proper concert hall so the acoustics were on point and overall they sounded just like the recording. The second time was in an arena so the sound wasn't as good but the concert was still great. Both times they did play most of their hit songs too. my only complaint is as far as the crowd interaction goes, it was the same for me. Though I feel like that is just maynard being maynard, he usually isn't front and center but I do wish there was a bit more. Sorry that your experience wasn't great, if you get the chance you should definitely go see them again.

I saw them live last January before Covid, and holy crap were they amazing.
A band that nit picks so much that they took over 13 years to produce an album will *absolutely* strive to be as perfect as possible while performing live. And after seeing them twice i can confirm they do a damn good job of it
3 times live and they are brilliant. 73 years old and a Tool fanatic. These songs never get old for me and the variety of themes and music styles seems unlimited. You have a good mind and will truly enjoy your trip down the Tool rabbit hole.

Tool is without a doubt, the best rock band of a time. I always chuckle when people disagree. But its really due to all 4 band members being on higher levels of talent and skill. Nobody in the band is less than the others. Truly remarkable.

When we are born we can only see in black and white, the first colors added are red and yellow, and it lets us see....people seem to miss this part of the song. When we are born we see the world as a magical place full of wonder, but as we grow older we forget to look around, to see what is around us, we focus inward on rather meaningless things. This song inspires the listener to look for that magic again, seek out the bewildering and open your mind.

Happy to see the love for Pneuma. I have to say I'm surprised at the lacklustre response to Fear Inoculum. I think it's a fantastic album. Not groundbreaking or anything, but still really freakin good.
To me it's like the best elements of Lateralus and 10,000 Days in one album.

@@johnygoodrich578 I would agree (especially the physical edition that scraps the useless interlude tracks). The only real problem I have with Tool's other albums (particularly 10,000 days, and Aenima) is that they don't respect your time. On the first listen some of the interludes can facilitate a quick chuckle, but I almost always end up skipping them and I honestly find them more annoying than anything. FI (the physical edition) might be the most balanced and "efficient" TooL album, quite ironic since every song is over 10 minutes.

I've seen Tool twice. Only time I've ever been moved to tears at a live gig. They're out there on their own. You need to listen to more Tool, the rabbit hole goes a long way down.
Tool is that perfect live. They focus their energy on nailing the song. They arent as engaging with the audience as some bands like the foo fighters. But experiencing Tool live is unique. Every person there is engaged and the energy is tangible.
I love the dichotomy of the stated lyrics of the song, and how intricate and interwoven all of the mathematical elements are.
For example, the line "Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind" yet the music and lyric pattern is intentionally made to be incredibly intricate and invites us to look deeper. It's a wonderful contrast because both things are simultaneously true.
Absolutely. "Separates the body from the mind" is also not necessarily a bad thing all the time. Sometimes I think we NEED to have our imaginations get away from us. That's how we create, and push boundaries. We have to move beyond.
Tool live is just as perfect. They never disappoint.

I saw them live at a festival of 40,000 odd, the last act and many people were quite disengaged where I was 40-50 metres away. It was very disappointing after seeing them in a small venue. It wasn't their fault, but not a festival band. So can disappoint.

Because of who they are, they can't engage a large audience. I know their personalities, so I don't blame them. But other bands are a lot better at engaging big festival audiences.
Basically saying they can disappoint live, because they do zero to engage their audience. Very emotionless. That's fine if you're close, but many people aren't.
I saw them after Rammstein. I was a big fan of tool, but that was a pretty disappointing experience seeing them after Rammstein. And I'm not even a Rammstein fan, I know about 3 songs.
@@danielhopper9581 right, but it's not them disappointing you. They're doing their thing and you find that thing disappointing. If I was in your position, I would really enjoy it because I enjoy that thing/their music. I don't require a band's engagement to enjoy seeing the band live.
I've seen Rammstein as well and they're a spectacle to watch.
My point being that I suppose it's subjective. They don't disappoint me, but they can disappoint you. That's not them though, that's just your expectation or opinion of them; you're causing your own disappointment in a sense.
I’ve seen them nine times and they are one of the rare bands that are actually better live. Life changing experience period
I've seen Tool a couple times in concert, they didn't disappoint either time. They were precise and energetic. Ozzy Osbourne was asked if he could give one highlight from his years of OZfest, and without missing a beat, he said watching Tool go up night after night and never making one mistake. You really should catch a concert if you have the opportunity.

I'm a drummer and Danny Carey is my favorite drummer, but that Pneuma vid ain't all that amazing really. Technically, Danny Carey himself isn't all that amazing (compared to other world class metal drummers, that is) but what sets him apart is the band he happens to be in and the musicality he brings to the proceedings. Like Neil Peart with Rush, Danny's style defines TOOL as much as Geddy and Maynard do.
Tool is the gift that keeps giving. To truly get the impact of Tool you should listen to a full album uninterupted, it's an indescribable experience when you surrender to the music.
Have to pound the table for Nightwish, a very different but equally emotive band. 'Ghost Love Score' official live Wacken 2013 is a perfect encapsulation of what Nightwish is all about.
Edit: Tool live is everything one could hope for. They are the epitome of professional performers, complete control of their individual sounds and the dynamic between the sounds. Tool compares to no other band, they are that unique in approach and sound, arguably the 2nd best live band I've experienced (Rush will be in my top spot forever, 3 hours of them is unmatched by anyone in history).
100% agree, Tool is my all-time fave but Nightwish is a close second at this point even though I discovered them much later. As you allude to, they scratch different itches but both need scratching regularly. :)

Tool has been my lifetime mental-spiritual-connection favorite band since around 1999 when I was in high school, a young mind searching for truth in the universe and learning about their music captivated me. Lateralus is still to this day probably my #1 album by any band EVER. An absolute masterpiece from beginning to end.
Around 2005 a coworker of mine who played drums as a hobby let me borrow his Rush in Rio 2003 DVD and it blew me away! I've loved them and learned more about them ever since! (RIP Neil 🙏)
Then a couple months ago I stumbled upon the Nightwish Ghost Love Score Wacken 2013 video and WHAT THE F@#$ IS THIS?! 😂 one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard!! How?! Oh well.. further down the rabbit hole we go!
@@kazera3282 I too found my musical footing in the late 90's, Aenima in '97 was my go to album, finally saw them on the Lateralus tour. Saw Rush the first time in '02, only knew the half dozen radio songs by them, that show blew me away from arriving to tailgate all the way to leaving at 2 AM, just an unreal experience. Was the same tour the Rush in Rio dvd was a part of, the single greatest concert dvd ever. Have not had the pleasure of seeing Nightwish live, found them in '02. Upon reflection these 3 seemingly unrelated bands feature the best lyrical content in music, every song has a story and message.

They are as perfect in concert, thing is they aren't the most thrilling rock and roll band live in that they aren't like Kiss or Metallica or Def Leppard; they just hunker down, they keep an eye and ear on one another but generally they keep on their respective sides of the stage. Maynard is usually stage right of Danny watching him closely because most of his vocal cadences are locked in with Danny's drumming and rhythms. Maynard does talk and interact with the audience between songs, he's irreverant and a smart ass, which can be funny, (sometimes,) but mostly they play like an orchestra would; focused and aware of one another and locked in to each measure and section. It's something to see and hear, they take their craft, their sound and their vision very seriously live.
@@Benesii And the flames synced up to Danny's drums playing on the stage beneath them in some cases. ;) I vaguely recall at one of their shows where contortionists descended from the roof by sliding down ropes held between their feet, too.
Justin's Bass playing at the end of this track brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Pneuma is a masterpiece. Actually, the entire Fear Inoculum album is a masterpiece. But Pneuma, I just can't stop listening to.

Anyone who can read or sing any of Maynard’s lyrics and not draw inspiration from them, has yet to feel alive. That was one of the most striking takeaways from the first time I saw them. EVERYONE is singing every song word for word. It is a beautiful thing to witness. But lyrics like these...you simply do not see or hear...you FEEL them. And that’s what this legendary band has been giving their fans for nearly 40 years.

Jambi if haven’t listened to yet. Tool is probably the most complex band of our time. There is not one of the four members lacking in creativity or talent. You want to have an out of body experience and then go back in to very center of your being , just listen to these guys they will definitely take you on a spiritual journey and yes they are that good live , granted Maynard is getting older but he still sounds amazing.
Not the most complex. More like the most rhythmically complex band to make it on mainstream radio in our time. There is way more advanced stuff out there melodically and harmonically, as well as rhythmically; it is just fringe.

I have heard a lot of of different bands but none have risen to the level of creativity that Tool has produced maybe I should of put rhythmically in my statement but I that was the whole point of music to begin with and that needed not be added, but would love to hear some other bands especially if it new talent.

I've watched hundreds of tool reaction videos and seen them live, there is a definite"bobblehead effect" to their music. Even long-time fans who know where the core rhythm is tend to do it, it's so easy to get sidetracked by the nuance and really get lost in the sound. I really think that is the best part about them, every time you listen it's a different journey and you notice something new. Seeing them live is a transformative experience though, cannot recommend it enough.
A brilliant live Tool recording is the song "Pushit" from the Salival concert. I haven't seen a video of it but the audio is here on youtube and its good quality too :)
I remember when I first experienced this album. 2002 and all I knew about Tool was Schism from the radio which always made me change the station. On a recommendation, I DL’d this album (illegal torrent) and threw it in my playlist while chatting on AIM & IRC. It wasn’t long before the “background music” made me stop everything, turn off the monitor, and just listen! I immediately went out and bought every album just to vote with my wallet for good music. Discovering Tool also gave me an appreciation for virtuosic drumming, as I was only a guitarist at the time who didn’t think much about the rhythm section.
Love that you appreciate this as much as I do, as much as so many of us here do. I love seeing you nod your head to the music, in the way that just tells me you get it and feel the same euphoria that we all get from that music. I won't tell you what to do different or more on Tool. You are already well on your way! Thanks for doing this... It is a great pleasure to get to watch someone experience a great piece of music like this for the first time.

Tool is absolutely amazing live. They arguably sound even better live and they also have mind blowing visuals/lasers to go with their songs. It is a life changing experience to see them live. Highly recommend once the pandemic is over.
One does not simply just listen to Tool. One must experience Tool. If you haven’t seen them live, do yourself a favor and watch some live videos. I’ve seen them live twice now and there’s literally no other band that can even hold a candle to them. Nothing short of incredible. Makes me happy seeing people experience them. Spiral out! 👁🌀

I've seen Tool live 12 times, first one was in '93 and the most recent was in Austin in January 2020. They keep growing and evolving and always gets better every time I see them. They are on point every time and the music is perfect live. Definitely see them live, it will change your life.

I've seen Tool live 4 times. The last time I was 18 rows back dead center with the stage. It's absolutely incredible. See their album artwork? Imagine that, but it's moving, and there's lights and laser beams everywhere. It's so loud that there are times where Danny hits a drum it's like he physically hits you. You can literally feel it. If you want to hear Tool live, I think you should check out Pneuma live (Danny Carey drum cam), especially if you loved the drums...in that video you can perfectly hear all instruments although you won't be able to watch the whole band playing. I think you would really enjoy it though...it is unreal what that man can do behind the drumset...

Ahh it’s so nice to see people being emotionally moved by my absolute favourite band. This song and this album where honestly massively important in my musical development and the development of my character. Years on, I’m still finding deeper understanding in the lyrics and music. I agree lateralus is the best album of all time. When I was 17 that album came out I listened to it night and day. Went to bed sleeping today and woke up listening to that in my head in school.
I also consider it the greatest work of musical art ever created in the modern "album" era. An album about achieving enlightenment, embracing one's creativity, about positive evolution, and about achieving a greater sense of purpose and being.

This song is such a masterpiece, there's been great dedication to making great covers to this by other musicians here on RUclips. Two of my favorites are by Monroe12478 who did a piano cover. The other was from a Koto ensemble. Absolutely mind bending covers, you should check them out. I couldn't get enough of this song, i had to see other versions.
The reason being is because this song was made in the most universally humanly way possible. This song is humanity in this incredible expansive universe. Tool and Lateralus will go down a century or later as classical music. Much in the same way we currently discuss in casual conversation over what era of classical music we prefer, like Mozart, Bach or Chopin, i think future generations will have conversations over what era of music from around the millenium was good to them. Tool, Lateralus, will be included in these conversations.

Man, I love TOOL. I’ve seen them a few times live and yes, they sound this perfect live as well. The last time I saw them was July of last year and the sounds and the visuals at that gig, I felt like I was inside an active volcano. It was sick.

They have EP albums with mostly live music on them. They are that good live. Check out PUSHIT from the salival album. It's a perfect masterpiece.
I think as with any live performance, there's a certain amount lost in translation when you listen to a recording of it. What makes it good is it puts you back in the moment you remember from your live experience.
It's Salival and that's it for live releases. But the rarity on Salival is their own version of led zeppelin's no quarter. Problem is, it's out of print and good luck finding it.

Over the last 22 years or so, I've seen TOOL live 4 times. I've seen them perform this song live and yes, it is this perfect live. Even better in my estimation. They give all every time. I've seen them at all points in the tour schedule. Beginning, middle, and end. Every time they are amazing. Excellent performers every time. Watch the Pneuma drum cam video. You will hear the whole performance in that video. Great stuff!

I’ve seen them live multiple times, and they are transcendental. Although, hearing this song live was bitter sweet. For a long while, it was the set finisher. The sound live is leaps and bounds above any expectation.

You mentioned checking out a live performance of Tool. There are two available that I highly recommend. One is their live performance of Sober, watching Maynard not just sing, but perform the character in the story is hauntingly beautiful. There's also a video of Pneuma with drummer cams on Danny Carey and his technical proficiency and creativity will blow your mind.

Tool! 52 here and love them! A bassist I knew back in like 94 played them for me and that's all it took! So influential on my own writing and playing(I am a composer and multi instrumentalist) and imo they created their own genre and Maynard an co. still rule from that throne!
An incredibly interesting somg is "culling voices" it has that effect that most tool songs have, being able to just transport your emotions to a different level
