    And now you understand why "spiral out" is such a communal message of Tool fans. Sure, it gets used to the point of almost being a satire of itself, but when you really listen to Lateralus and get pulled into its phenomenal soundscape, you understand that the foundation for the phrase is so damn powerful and important. One of the greatest songs ever recorded, regardless of time or genre.

  • @ChaseVonnegut

    I think an important aspect to understand, that I think even many Tool fans miss, is that Tool writes by FEEL first. Adam/Justin have stated they usually make riffs by playing around and what sounds/feels good, without really paying too much here to time signatures. Then Danny comes in and figured out what the hell is going on, they jam on stuff, and figure out how to fit things together (so time modification after the fact). And then when that is all done, Maynard comes in and listens to the song a few times and responds with lyrics/tones that the music makes him FEEL.
    So... What I am trying to say is that I think the reason Tool is so good, which some don't get, is that Tool is a FEELING band that THINKS, not necessarily a thinking band that tries to feel.

    • @plantdesigns7889
      @plantdesigns7889 9 месяцев назад

      They definitely make use of notes that conjure up feelings whether it be joy, dread, fear, etc. For example, The Patient always gives me a sense of dread, almost fear. I once started listening to this album in the dark with the headphones on after watching the movie The Grudge. I got to The Patient, and more importantly, Mantra and had to turn the lights on. Couldn't handle it 😂

    I love Tool, they're hands down my favourite band. All of them are incredibly talented at what they do. But I also grew up during a time where for some reason I completely ignored Dream Theater, another band of absolute geniuses, and recently I've been giving them a proper go and man, they've got some amazing songs as well. I've been literally listening to The Count Of Tuscany (absolute masterpiece) several times a day (it's a 20 minute song) as well as a bunch of their other long songs and it's so worth listening to. But going back to Lateralus, I'd have to say it's probably one of my all-time favourite songs.

    Tool has a running theme of preaching presence in their music, it is very Gong Fu. Body, mind, and breath, understanding how to get the mind fully present in the body with movement connected through breathing. Injuries occur on the body due to a sudden or gradual breaking down of the mind body/muscle connection. This can happen by fear, shock, even accidentally creating negative connections to the body instead of positive ones. When you take the mind out of the body because of the pain, you will create negativity that weakens your mental connection. To strengthen the body you must repair the connection with light activity that makes you feel positively towards the pain and it's surrounding areas, breath air into the body and take it to this place. Where the mind goes the energy will follow, where the energy goes, the blood will follow, and where the blood goes there will be healing and growth. Truly though it is the mind you are repairing for the body is but a mere reflection.

  • @dmwalker24
    @dmwalker24 9 месяцев назад +1

    Yes, it makes a lot of sense. It's not a stretch to say that someone could write a dissertation level analysis of everything that is going on in this one song. Specifically when they go into that break-down section before ramping back up again. There is the initial pattern, but then of course the different elements of the drums come in. Those elements are timed in such a way that they drift backward relative to the main pattern, but in doing so they periodically line back up briefly before going out of phase again. They are creating multiple patterns that are literally spiraling around each other in time.

    I told you this is probably one of the Tool-iest Tool songs that they've ever Tooled, lol. You'll pick up more as you listen to it more, too, and dig into the lyrics. They loosely based almost everything about this song around the Fibonacci sequence. Right down to the number of syllables in the lyrics, the length of the song, and, of course, the time signature(s).

    Nice reaction. What I love and find ironic about this song is that it's telling us not to overthink or overanalyse things, and yet it routinely gets massively overanalysed :)
    While I love music, I am musically illiterate, and often don't know why I truly like a song. For me, I do remember that it was the drums in Lateralus that blew my mind. My flatmate had me listen to it, and I remember trying to explain why this one grabbed me, and was like, "there's something kinda off about the timing of the drums, but it really works?". I knew nothing about time signatures at the time (and still don't know much ha ha). I did get much the same feeling from the end of Descending as the drums start coming back in. Amazing stuff.

      Another way to think about it is spirals usually are thought of as a downward trajectory “downward spiral” or a stairway to heaven…spiraling up into the beyond. But this song is about spiraling in a horizontal fashion, extending the reach you have currently and doing with that what you will. 1+1=2+1=3+2=5+3=8+5=13…and so on and so on. The Fibonacci Sequence visually is a spiral and so obviously this message is accentuated by the numerical and geometric structure of this song.
      …and I’ve said too much. 🌀

    Lateralus & Parabol/a both has some spiritual themes. Especially Parabola. They sound far out but not really if you are spiritually literate. Those who know, know. It’s obvious when you can hear it and you know what Maynard is talking about. You are not losing it. I hear it too. These themes often go over people’s heads all the time when listening to these songs off of Lateralus. These themes and lyrics come off abstract at first but they are very deliberate and on point in their message. It’s their best album in my opinion. And I’m also convinced that Maynard has had a breakthrough psychedelic trip sometime in his life from those lyrics in Lateralus. 😂

    I watch a lot of these reactions and I'll tell you that I appreciated how much you just let the song play out. When people overanalyze tool in a way that isn't technical, it kind of drives me crazy. You're missing out on the feeling if you do that. I think you 100% felt the way you're supposed to feel, and that feeling is what Tool is all about. I think that good Tool reactions are exclusive to 1 of 2 categories. It's the technical aspect of the music, or it's the way it makes you feel. Both are good content, and you leaned into the emotional reaction part. People that try to analyse Maynard's poems in real time drive me nuts. That's personal; that's for you in your own time.

    I love your reaction and small analysis. I like Sam Harris too and never thought about the mindfulness thing. Spiral out!

    Now being a prog & metal fan, I should like Tool. But they bore the shit outta me.

    First time hearing Tool. Great musicians but need new vocals if they want to compete with the likes of Zeppelin.

      Did you know that the hard rock groups and heavy metal evolved from 60’s 70’s & 80’s when there were 50+ of those groups. This is not something that was just created.

    Lolz...Sam Harris's hatred of Donald Trump, takes over most moments in his life. So i think a more apt Tool song/lyrics for Sam, would be "The Pot"

    I tried listening to this again and watched your facial expressions and it was apparent that you hearing something totally different than I was hearing. Still not my kind of listening. I’m not judging I’m just stating my preference.
