So this version of the song is performed by a music school group that Danny Carey has a hand in as well. The kids do a great job but they definitely dont do the original justice sadly to say. If you want to see their talent really come through listen to their cover of 46 & 2.

You can never overthink tool and its super worth googling their songs. This song is written with the fibinacci sequence, the lyrics are written with the mathematics. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, then back to 5 for the syllables.

Suggestions for next songs for us veteran TOOL fans to see you enjoy vicariously:
If you want slow buildup and intricate layering, do Wings for Marie + 10.000 Days or Parabol + Parabola.
If you want power and emphasis on drumming, do Ticks & Leeches.
If you want emphasis on bass, do Schism.
If you want emphasis on weird things the guitar player (Adam Jones), do Jambi.
If you want all-round classic TOOL, do Forty 6 & 2, Stinkfist, Vicarious, Sober, or Aenema.

The only reason i wouldnt reccommend delving into wings for marie and 10 000 days is cause of the history and context needed, knowing about his struggles with his mother and the church. Also, if you do those, i reccommend adding judith by a perfect circle cause that fills the gap of his emotions toward it. But wings and 10,000 days need to be done together.

  • @tei187
    @tei187 3 года назад +1

Actually, this video correlates with the song quite well. Let's see:
I don't quite recall exactly what it was all about, but due to time signatures of the chorus they somehow realized that it is a number in Fibonacci sequence (I want to say 987, but not sure). Due to that, the vocals are based on the said sequence, which in turn relates to the Golden Ratio theory (quotients of pairs of numbers of the sequence, where dividend is the higher value and divider being the lower one of the pair, are close to 1.618). The sequence goes kind of like: 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3(...), so transcribing it to syllables-like vocal parts you get:
    1: Black,
    1: and,
    2: white-are,
    3: all-I-see,
    5: in-my-in-fan-cy,
    8: red-and-yell-ow-then-came-to-be,
    5: reach-ing-out-to-me,
    3: lets-me-see.
Also, there are references to different kinds of mathematic equations and models, which happen to often be embodied, seemingly on its own, as part of nature (or at least that's just how I see it). So there we go again with the Golden Ratio and spirals, since they are more or less an often sight in different kinds of plants (sometimes even in bone structure of animals). But, of course - it's not just nature, but a lot of things made by people (referenced for example by the architectural plans near the end of the song).
btw. I love your channel. I got so fed up with "reactions" being the same repeatable face expressions of people just wanting to sell merchandise. Watching how you actually analyze the songs makes me want to dig deeper into their meaning, texture and overall structure, perhaps making me appreciate the song more than before.

There is a time after the first awakening often referred to as the fatalistic period in which it becomes increasingly harder for the traveler to relate back to the material world in the wake of the unearned wisdom that they received from their experience. The fact of the matter is that you never truly obtain enlightenment, but rather you achieve moments of other worldly clarity and it is a hard pill to swallow that you are not allowed to exist there permanently. But if the traveler abides by the teachings of their experience, they will come to realize that the only way forward is to bring into alignment, both the nature of their own humanity and the devine wisdom of the awakening, bringing themselves closer to centrality, and as such, one tiny step closer to some semblance of enlightenment. We must use this primordial knowledge to accentuate and improve our humanity, rather than abandoning it. Love your reactions by the way. You're a very insightful person. I admire that🤙🏼

The opening lines simply describe the development of sight in a fetus - nothing (black), then light detection (white) and the first colours they can see are red (the colour of the material around them!).
I've always seen it as an allegory for the development of knowledge as opening your mind to understanding the world.

This song is written in the Fibonacci sequence. The shell at the beginning of this video, is an example of nature using the Fibonacci sequence in the natural development of a shell. Fibonacci sequence is 1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+2=5, 5+3=8, etc...

I died when you said " Maybe I'm over thinking this." knowing what lyrics were coming next. But yeah as mentioned by others, this is a cover, and not a really good one. There are many layers missing and it's just not right. The video was cool though. But you have to listen to the original , there is no music or lyric video for it. But hey, now you've analyzed the lyrics and can focus on the other aspects of the song when you listen to the real version.
Then watch a video where a guy explains all the different ways they use the Fibonacci sequence in this song.

2 angles on the colors. 1) infants only see in black and white, then gain color vision, so that line can be literal. 2) cultural. In linguistic development words for light and dark come first, then red and often yellow, then other colors from there. Either way it is a reference to development and gaining the ability to differentiate over time.

The closest thing I could find to a definition:
    lateralis
    1. denoting a position farther from the median plane or midline of the body or a structure.
    2. pertaining to a side.

The number syllables in his first verse match the fibonacci sequence. The syllables Maynard sings in the first verse follow the first six numbers in the pattern, ascending and descending in the sequence 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3. "Black (one), then (one), white are (two), all I see (three), in my infancy (five). Red and yellow then came to be (eight), reaching out to me (five). Lets me see (three)." In the next verse, Maynard begins with the seventh number of the Fibonacci sequence (13), implying a missing verse in between. He descends back down with the following pattern; 13-8-5-3. "As below so above and beyond I imagine (13). Drawn beyond the lines of reason (eight). Push the envelope (five). Watch it bend (three)." The second verse adds the missing line to complete the sequence; "There is (two), so (one), much (one), more that (two), beckons me (three), to look through to these (five), infinite possibilities (eight)." 1-1-2-3-5-8-5-3-2-1-1-2-3-5-8-13-8-5-3.

While it's not the original, your analysis of the lyrics are absolutely fantastic. You are not an asshole to want to go back, and no need to apologize. There is a ton of code and meaning in this song, and a lifetime of analysis would not reveal it all. To me the back then white, red then yellow line is about literal infant eyes developing, but also about cognitive awareness developing. In the beginning there is just black and white, things are simple. But as we develop the complexities grow and our awareness changes. We must learn to balance knowledge and intuition. Overthinking causes us to miss opportunities. In any case we push the envelope, ride the spiral.

I think what he means by "still be a human" is to remain humble. Most times when people think of themselves as divine, they grow a sense of self righteousness where nothing they do can be wrong because they have this sense of authority. Basically, he's saying he wants to know the scope of that divine nature that's dwelling within, but still be able to look at things with humility.

I always thought the remark regarding remaining human was more about not losing himself, being lost, or tranforming into something other. Wanting to be able to have the experience and feel it with human feeling, wonder, awe, amazement at the magnitude of it all. If you were no longer human there is a chance you could no longer appreciate it from the perspective of humanity and our current place within it. Dont know, just my slant on it I guess. Hope others respond with a different perspective and expand my own spiral outward.
