You nailed the “hooked forever” I’ve been clean for 9 years now but I know I’m always one weak moment from going back down that path. “Wake up everyday and go to war with voices in my head” to quote another awesome band
Keep strong brother.
Yes this is a true statement. Was sober for 3yrs. Stress crept back in with a promotion and here we go again. 3yrs down the drain.
Nine TailFox stay strong 👍 I’m 2yr 5months sober. One day at a time. We can all do this guys.
@@kaos3383 it's not down the drain, you learnt so much in your time sober that you can put into practice that you didnt have before. I have nearly 9 years behind me now but I quit & relapsed so many times before that. Keep your head up
Just keep in mind he's saying "why can't we NOT be sober" You're still nailing the meaning, but that ~not~ changes how whoever he's channeling is struggling.
^
Yes, its a double negative!
exactly. it from an addict going thru withdrawals, pretty much right?
Maynards performance and shaking in this is purely emotion driving him, he was also having massive amounts of anxiety playing a festival this big so early in their career untested in front of masses of people who most have never seen or heard of them
For Most of their post-90’s shows Maynard is very rarely at the front of stage anymore and sometimes not even visible he just wants his singing to stand for itself
His voice is just sooo damn demanding. It's absolutely stunning. Been a fan for 15 years, still amazed every time his voice greets my ears.
Sober is incredibly accessible for listeners who aren’t use to polyrhythms and non-standard time signatures.
Away from the metal . You should check out some nubreed and Jesse Howard as well as nubreed alone. Country rap southern boys as well
Danny is one of the greats.
Isn't this song in 4/4? 😅 Carey is pretty clear and simple in this one
I'm jealous you get to hear this for the first time.
I know right!
My dad took me to get the album in 93’, I was 11 and have been a purist before when the EP came out. Undertow just did me in as a youngster.
Not the full lyrics tho...
An artist friend of theirs was battling alcohol addiction while making their art, and they felt like they couldn't make their art without the substance's influence. Eventually their friend beat it and makes great art without "help" from an exterior source.
Nailed it!
Bad ass
Hhhhmmmm, I've read it was about Layne Staley. Maybe it was about both.
And just think this is the period of time when Tool would do shows with Rage Against the Machine picture those shows. Miss those days.
Saw tool support RATM in the UK. Unreal gig.
Two of my favorite bands. Deftones are one of my favorites too.
1998.
Lollapalooza
Yep. Alice in chains, too
Keenan is even featured in one of RATM's songs
@@led.zepper Maynard Against The Machine. Know Your Maynard.
Should definitely do Judith by A Perfect Circle, MJK's other band
Also 3 libras, Magdalena, Sleeping Beauty….. so many good ones! Then on to Puscifer, Horizons🤣! It’s a whole mood!
Loved a Perfect Circle 👌
Absolutely should do Judith!!!
AGREE
Yes. Since that is actually about religion (God abandoning his mother in his eyes) while sober is about a friend that depended on drugs to be creative.
The only interpretation of Tool that matters is your own. The unfed mind devours itself.
Check out The Humbling River by Puscifer for a completely new Maynard vibe.
I love the message in The humbling river. Very powerfull.
Yessss
I was in my active alcoholism when I first heard this in the 90s. What a gut-wrenching piece of work. This is what art should do. You FEEL the desperation in this one. Tool is a deep listen.
Blessings
Aenema is my favorite song by Tool. A beautifully written song about how he wishes California would just fall into the ocean. When it does, I'll see you down at Arizona Bay
Aenima is my favorite as well. That's the song that took me down the rabbit hole.
Mom's gonna fix it all soon. Mom's coming round to put it back the way it oughtta be.
My favorite as well.
It's based on a bill hicks bit. Great track.
Yup mine as well
@@lungfulldrummer8921 CORRECT! Bill Hicks has an album called "Arizona Bay" reference to Arizona being beach front property one day... after the cleansing. lol 🤘👍🔥😎✌👏
To me its not just about drugs or religion, but all things in life that lead you to believe it holds your salvation only to use you abuse you and mislead you from yourself.
This is Paul D'Amour on bass, the original bassist for Tool. He was replaced with Justin Chancellor for the Ænima album, who is in Tool still to this day
Both great, in different ways. IMO.
The way he's acting on stage is both a combination of him playing a role as an addict, and the fact that Maynard had horrendously bad performance anxiety. They've come a long way, but especially in the early days, he was just NOT comfortable being on stage.
I think it's one of the "most pleasing" Tool songs because it's one of the most accessible. They usually like to play with odd time signatures and rhythms. And typically when we listen to music, we just want to vibe to it, without having search for the beat.
I taped this song off the radio….. tool fan ever since
He looks just like my ex when he was on cough syrup or heroin. Same exact hunched form.
I always took the Mother Mary line as the rhetoric of finding recovery through a higher power.
Their live shows are something you can never forget. It changed me both times I heard them and saw them directly. I can’t thank them enough for letting me know I’m not the only one.
Stinkfist is one of my favorites. It's worth a listen. Then again, this is Tool, and there are SO many worthy songs.
This is by far the best performance I’ve ever seen, soooo much compassion for what Maynard is speaking goes into this performance, It gives me goosebumps.
for someone who hasn t "known" about heavy music the past couple weeks for you has been pretty fukkin heavy-enjoy the ride
6:54 - But he's not saying that, he's saying "why can't we NOT be sober".
It took me ... 20 years to realize that and I realized it because someone pointed out the double negative. :D
My excuse is that I'm not a native english speaker. x)
Dont worry, English is just an absolute mess. Like there is an order to adjectives and all native speakers inherently understand it but I bet if you asked anyone they couldnt tell you what the order is, just be able to tell when its not used correctly.
@9:28 i loved this song back in the day. But like i said earlier in comments, ive never seen them LIVE. I see it soo differently now. watching him perform that song hit harder than ever before...
Best. Reaction. Channel. Period.
I found this performance yesterday trough a comment on another channel damn this may be the best live performance ive ever seen such a strong voice!
Dude you are one of the greatest to comment on rock, love the the way you break down things, CHEERS!!!!
Being a recovering alcoholic and well, a few other things, I can honestly say that sometimes the hardest thing to do, even now years sober, is blinking. Every second of darkness is a flash into the world that I want to forget. I've hurt many people with the things I've done, I regret everything that happened, but here I am, trying not to cry in front of my daughter. The only thing I want now is to be better. Better for her, better for me. I still hate what I was, I know strong word, but I'm learning to accept who I am now. The strength to do the impossible is right in front of you, maybe playing with toys maybe not, might be an animal, music is always a good outlet, but all you need to do is open your eyes. Everyone has a little light in their lives, but it's up to you to to find it.
Stay strong everyone. And it's ok. You're ok. Everything will be fine.
Blessings
Great analysis my friend... so much raw emotion and power... thank you.
And Mr.Lbyod needs to watch the official video!!! Really should have been a pure reaction like we all witnessed it and inexperienced tool for the first time! their videos are done by a very specific artist and it will blow your mind.
Maynard loves to play on words and he's quite good at it, if I say so myself.
Maynard is like a method actor (performer/singer).
It’s amazing to watch
Sir, very perceptive of you to recognize his physical performance as part of the story.
“Tool guitarist Adam Jones has stated in an interview that the song is about a friend of the band whose artistic expression only comes out when he is under the influence. "A lot of people give him shit for that," Jones explains. "If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault."
I love your reaction videos on these old rock songs. You bring me back to my teens/ early 20s. BUT you got LIVE footage ive never seen...
This is like almost 30yrs old I was 12 when I first heard this song, And we would sing it all day in school. Every one thought we was nuts, but we just loved this Band. This album was the best thing outside of the nevermind album by Nirvana. And Pearl Jam Ten album and the Pork soda album by Primus. Ext....
Maynard plays this part so well. Singing bent over like that?? 😳🔥
That's what makes this performance even more crazy. It's insanely difficult to sing with that much power with poor posture like that.
Seen them live 3 times. It will blow your mind. Incredibly tight band.
When he sings of Mother Mary, in my mind, it brings up Maynard’s complicated relationship with the Christian faith.
Even though I prefer official music videos to live shows, this live version is the best visual representation of a song.
hes mimicking the character from the early 90s music video on stage and still rockin badass vocals all hunched over owwwwww !!!!!
First verse is the user talking to the drug. The second verse is the drug talking to the user.
To the commentary of this song, and the power OF the song, I saw once a long while back that Maynard wrote this song when he was 18 and it's one of his best songs ever written.
I have always associated those last licks of the guitar as a heartbeat.
me and the boys arriving early for more goddamn TOOL
I do believe it's about addiction, but Tool leaves things open to the interpretation of the listener. The fact that you react to Dimash Kudaibergen and Tool makes me think that you know and truly love good music. It's awesome to have a reactor who enjoys a range of genres. I look forward to seeing what you do next. Maybe I'll discover something new watching😊
Tool songs are rarely just about one thing. They are faceted and layered and have many meanings. Additionally they're somewhat enigmatic to encourage each listener to cultivate a personal meaning. You can get lost in the music, or rhythm, and hear the voice as nothing more than another instrument. You can focus entirely on the lyrics separately from the music. You can envision the meaning from many different perspectives. I've listened to Tool on and off for 20+ years and even still, to me, the meaning of their music evolves with each listen
I really appreciate you, man. You try to get deep into the songs' meaning.
I love watching reactions to this performance.
I love it even more when the reactor “gets it” as far as what Maynard was portraying.
Kudos 🤙
Yes. One of my favorite bands.
Check out Know Your Enemy by Rage Against The Machine. Maynard has a part on the track. Also, I believe this is about a friend of the band that thought of himself as less creative when sober.
The one performance you needed to just soak in with your eyes 100% first and go over the lyrics second as the stage act was a story in itself. Glad you caught on half way through :D
This is the perfect tool song to react to. The way that Maynard contorts his body and shows the pain the ideal to what he wants to convey in this song. he is acting like an addict on purpose
I love your reactions so much. I love your use of the word "dudes" and when you say "yes" or "right" at the end of a statement. I find myself nodding yes each time, lol. Your videos feel interactive and engaging.
I seriously like you as well as your thought processes.
MrLboyd, the years of Maynard in front ie Opiate/Undertow & Ænima era (pre-Lateralus) were by far the prime years of seeing TooL live. It's not even close
Its about addiction, remember he's say "why cant we NOT be sober" , that's grammatically a double negative so he's basically saying "why can't we be un-sober" Also the "Mother Marry won't you whisper something but the past is done" he's saying kind of ironically, as in its typical for religion to not give him any real answers or help.
It's about a addict in a 12 step program 😔
Why can't we not be sober to the Tree of Knowledge..Cast out..I see it both ways.
yeah mother mary wont give you answers.. thats pagan worship.. jesus christ is the only way not the women body he chose to be birthed from
He's a very good actor when it comes to singing the lyrics and letting the music consume him.
I love how you analyze the lyrics with precision! Much love!
I’m beyond ecstatic you did a reaction to this. My favorite band
The trinity of this genre is SOTD, RATM, and TOOL. Love the reactions. Keep on Truckin'...
You have to see them live to experience it. He moves very strangely and puts himself in positions that are difficult to sing and project in but it all builds the feels. Very emotional performances that can drain the audience or elevate them. Great show.
I had a chance to see them live at Lalapalooza in Colorado in the 90's .. I wanna say 96.. Fidlers Green. with The Prodigy💜💯 ... Snoop dog & Tricky also were there
From the very first time I heard this song I never thought it was about addiction. I think this song is about becoming awake, aware or informed and regretting the fact that you can never go back. You cannot numb yourself enough "why can't we NOT be sober?" and you cannot close your eyes "why can't we SLEEP forever?". As they say, ignorance is bliss.
yeah, they are pros for sure. if Tool ever comes back to Spain, you should check them out. One of the best live shows there is.
I’ve loved Tool for years, but this may be the first time I really heard the lyrics of Sober. Thank you, I really enjoy your reactions and lyric break downs.
Most amazing concert I've ever been to, and that's saying a lot. If you don't know the band you may think Maynard, the lead singer, is apathetic, uninterested, etc cause he doesn't dance around or run across the stage but in reality he hates to be the center of attention even though he's the lead singer so often times he'll stand behind the other band members or off to the side. He wants the focus to be on the song/music, not himself. The deep meaning the songs have, even as cryptic as they may be at times, are truly awe inspiring and mind blowing.
I would pay $500 for nosebleed seats just to see them perform, but thankfully I won't have to because they refuse to sell tickets at outrageous costs (compared to other bands/performers).
5:10 - Bingo! :) This is such an powerful performance (also that voice....). :)
I love your lyrical analysis. I'd love to hear this thoughts on these songs. All different styles of music. 1). Black Eyed Peas - Where's the Love? , 2). XTC - Dear God, 3). Pearl Jam - Black (live MTV unplugged) and 4). Corey Taylor - Snuff (live version).
Your commentary brought a host of new emotions to a song I've enjoyed for a long, long time -- thank you. Re-experiencing the song through the lens you offered, I feel like when Maynard is speaking in the first person as faith here. As I interpret the first person as the faith he rejected from his parents, it all comes into a much sharper context and view - the faith is pleading why can't we (the faith and the faithful + faithless) just be sober, why can't we start this over? The faith wants to start it over. The faith wants us to be sober, and can't seem to understand when that isn't the case. For the line "Why can't we drink forever", the sacrament could be offered as a replacement for drink there, but that might be a cop-out in my reasoning here. But for folks who have rejected an evangelical/fundamental faith, this rings more true to me in the moment than it did with other interpretations.
always a pleasure seein ur face pop up on new vids man u always seem to know when respect is needed haha owwwww !!!!!
If every Tool song was an instrumental, they would still be an amazing band! Then add the lyrics and the way it sounds and every song is something else entirely. Such a good band at every level. Mad respect.
although I totally understand wanting to watch the live version of any song, especially when watching a group for the first time or two but.....
if there's any video.....
for any song ever made.....
that really drives the song home like a stake through your heart more than Sober..... I don't want to know.
I can’t wait till he breaks down Aenemia lyrics!!! 🤯
I saw them live once. Just after my then girlfriend explained the meaning of 4 degrees, showed me the tickets she bought and said she had an idea on how to celebrate.
Ah she was fun. Too fun for one man apparently.
Anyway Tool always has a passionate place in my heart for good and bad. Mainly good.
The original claymation video was crazy for this. The album was something totally different… especially the very disturbing “hidden tracks”
No need to “decide” what it’s about…it means something different to each person that listens to it and feels the passion from these amazing musicians.
This is one of my favorite Tool songs because everyone gets so deep with the interpretations and I've heard multiple interviews where they were like "uh, yeah it's about wanting to do drugs all the time but we're glad it helped some people get sober, I guess."
⚡⚡⚡ insightful respectful dissection of this song, i align myself with the opinion that you have great taste in music, as your commentary has shown you have depth of vision sonically🎸
There’s something about your voice man…it keeps me coming back haha
As an alcoholic of 15+ years, this song perfectly captures my inner monologue. Especially on sober days when I reflect how many relationships I've cultivated and then ruined as a result of letting other people down. The "Mother Mary won't you listen" line is closely followed by the echo "something but the passenger." It's a plea for something (anything!) other than the 'passenger' of addiction (also the waiting butler, ready and willing to serve) to be willing to listen to reason and to set you free.
This is a full performance video, yes, but if you saw the video for Pneuma, you saw Maynard skulking around behind the drum rig on accident.
Love your channel
Great reaction and observation of an addict and I appreciate you not judging, for I am a recovering heroin addict and though I’m drug free for three years I’m “clean” but not sober due to the torment I put myself through because of my addiction which also took my freedom for the majority of my adult years in prison for crimes I committed in order to support my addiction. I’m sixty years old now and these last three years is the longest I’ve been free in society. I’m on a journey of giving back to the community by reaching out to our youth so they not experience the life I once lived. But it’s still foggy, for the addiction is very cunning and baffling. An addict isn’t fully recovered until they leave this world clean and sober. Great content reaction. Have a blessed day and thank you 🙏🏽✌🏼😎🇲🇽✊🏼🤘🏼😉
Just like the old saying about cigs: "You never truly quit smoking, you just take extended breaks."
Some famous, I think author, said "giving up is easy, I've done it hundreds of times" or words to that effect
I’m excited to hear this one!
I love this fucking song and video from way back In high school !!! Trippin about the video on much music🤘🏻 w20 years you got an awesome channel bro
The actual video for the song is sic. Tool made the video.
All Tool videos are mind-bending
I always felt like he was using the perspective that addiction takes over like it becomes their addiction. And then he brings forth the addiction’s POV.
Also you should check out “Hush” off their Opiate album it’s about censorship and judgement
I like this mans analysis. Seems like a smart and interesting thinker.
Love it. Can't wait for more tim minchin reactions!
I saw Tool play at a festival around this same period - Stone Temple Pilots, Fishbone, Violent Femmes, and Primus also played. Pretty epic day of 90s alt rock.
Ozz Feast 98 was epic
It's an act. The more he's hooked on the drug, the longer the song goes on, the worse he ends up looking. (I always thought the "trust in me" part was the drug talking)
It is, IMHO. Coming from someone that knows
🔥🔥🔥 love this song so much!
Maynard says he’s most proud of his Puscifer song, Grand Canyon.. it’s good
That's is the best you going to hear and a perfect circle basically the same thing as the best you gonna hear.
That entire album is worthy. It kicks off hypnotic, swims into your soul and drowns you in the abyss.
Without doubt my favorite tool album
Wow ! Every time i see this video It Is so real you can not fake that sh#t It hurts my soul ! What a singer what a talent so many people feel like this and everyone just looks away !!!!!!!! WHY !!
The singer plays the theatrics in the song! Look close. His eye are clear and focused; watch, though he stumbles around and is scratching his feet are moving purposefully and he is planted. The scratching is the theatrics. He looks wasted but thats the point! The theatrics fit with the song.
Thanks
46 & 2 is outstanding as well
I would love to see your breakdown of aenema by tool. love watching you and your insight into songs
Love it! keep it up! check out Passenger by Deftones, has Maynard on the track
One of my favorite Deftones song. The album White Pony is fanfuckintastic. Knife Party is on my top 10 of all genres.
Great one. I second this.
I'm very surprised you didn't pick up on the double negative. "Why can't we not be sober." Love your content.
Here is a fun fact, Maynard (singer) owns vineyards in New Mexico and two wineries in Arizona. And, at no time has he ever given me impression that he is a substance abuser at all. He is a highly educated and very intense song writer and performer. I have also heard, many years ago, that he is an Ordained Minister,
Absolutely love Tool❤️
