As funny as the obvious fisting lines are they actually reinforce the point of the song. More stimulation, more extremes just to feel or notice something.

Maybe my faorite TOOL song, it also maybe Maynard's most tragic song, lyrically. I love the double entendre of "take my hand," meaning something sexual on the surface, but also a metaphor as a cry for help. The lines "elbow deep," and "shoulder deep," meaning his mental addiction to feel something - ANYTHING - is impossibly unquenchable. This song is a dessertation - a psychological profile - on society's penchant to mistake mental health for perversion or deviant behavior. Brilliant.

Adam Jones does the videos. He also worked on many 90's blockbusters.
The music videos often distract new listeners. In the advent of technology at that time, Maynard was writing this to warn us of the desensitization of constant connection.

The three musicians write all the music. Sometimes this is a very long process. Once the music is what they want, they then give to Maynard to write the lyrics. Three of the best musicians with one of the best, of not the best lyricists= one of the top bands of all time

The song can also be viewed as a metaphor for personal growth and self-discovery. The "stinkfist" can represent the willingness to confront and embrace the darker aspects of oneself, metaphorically "fisting" or delving deep into one's own psyche to explore and understand the hidden aspects of one's personality. It can be seen as a call to embrace discomfort and face the less desirable aspects of life or one's own psyche in order to grow and evolve.

@@Double44inthemorninghappy to find a Tool fan who realizes there is no hyper specific meaning to the songs and it’s meant to be broad. That’s the thing I hate about mega tool fans, they always have their theories on the music and have kind of an elitist mindset about it. Avenged Sevenfold's new song "Cosmic".
You gotta do it. I've been listening to this like every six hours. The album is called "Life Is But A Dream", and it's very disjointed, too many influences to count. "Cosmic" is a masterpiece though. Orchestra in the modern era.

Every Tool song is worthless if you haven't heard Sweat. What good is a tool that just lays there? Each Tool song is a tool for a different area of life. With their discography, we have all the tools we need to become successful. But without the 1st Tool, the 1st song on the 1st Tool album, it's all futile & totally worthless. This isn't what the song is about, necessarily. It's just how I feel about the song. It's 3:30, roughly,.. a bit short, it would seem. But, there's little hints of everything they've grown into since then, all packed into 1 short, but really sweet song. If you're not gonna Sweat, just leave Tool alone, child!!!
