    “Lateralus” is the obvious suggestion, but often people invite new listeners to experience several easier options first. Time signatures, lyrical complexity, and song length are all barriers that can put potential tool fans off. Every song means something to me, so I’d watch no matter.

    Their drummer Danny Carey is probably in the top 3 of active, living drummers... and probably #1. As a drummer myself, I refer to him as "The Octopus" because that man can play a distinctly different pattern on each appendage simultaneously. He is also one of the few that can not only play odd time signatures, but also play a different time signature than the main melody and have it resolve at the end of the phrase. To the band's credit, they can still follow that. Most musicians could never "find the one" if the drummer did that.

    • @Aarononautos
      @Aarononautos Год назад

      Yeah. I would argue Carey and Gene Hoglan as vying for #1 today.

    • @strwbrryswisher420
      @strwbrryswisher420 Год назад +3

      Not to mention the fact that Danny has been quoted saying "I've never played to a click on stage in my life..." Which in itself is amazing but when you add in his odd time signatures shows just how much of a legend he really is.

    • @SpaghettiYOLOKingTTV

      Agreed. Every time I've gone and seen them live, most of the entire concert, I'm just watching him in awe. He's so tall and he sits behind this massive drum set that has so many working parts that never go ignored. Truly an amazing musician to see in action.

    • @AKJACKAL99709
      @AKJACKAL99709 Год назад +2

      @mysticsaxophone4181 without some official scoring system this is all subjective. I also would throw the names Dave Weckl and Vladyslav Ulasevych in the ring. One is contemporary jazz and the other is hybrid metalcore.
      So when we talk about the best and greatest is it based on reputation, success, talent, skill, or originality? Should we be separating them by genre, or are the greatest drummers only those that can excel in multiple genres?

    "the Pot" is usually a highly requested early in your Tool journey song for several reasons. It has the unusual (but not too unusual) time signatures, great vocals, and just a taste of many of the techniques they employ - while still being accessible for people who are used to 'radio rock'. It's a great song in its own right, but is really the kiddie pool on the beach next to the ocean of the rest of their discography.
    Lateralus is going to blow your mind. Spiral out!

    I’m probably one of the many people who suggested the pot after your last tool reaction, and it’s because this is one of two or three songs where Maynard’s vocal track is very forward in the mix compared to the rest of their catalogue. Plus it exemplifies his range while also just being a great straight forward song with some seriously punchy bass funk. My next suggestion would be either The Grudge to really demonstrate how the man can really belt a scream, or Aenima for another more forward mixed vocal song that is sonically unlike the other tool songs you’ve heard.

  • @toolfankrk

  • @Daffmeister187
    @Daffmeister187 5 месяцев назад

    What I like the most about this song, compared to other Tool songs, I like how different this is mixed compared to most of their work (excluding Vicarious). It feels like they sort of accepted a compromise and mixed it more like modern rock/metal songs are usually mixed but upon reaching that compromise also went right to the deep end of that pool, experimented with the method and did things like recording the bongos with a 3d mic for instance, so it actually sounds like it's coming from behind you instead of just being in the background. It feels like they knew the song was too good to be mixed their traditional way and allowed it to have that wider appeal that will draw in new listeners, and I applaud them for allowing this song to be different.

    I might have mentioned it a few times already, but I am never tired to recommend A Perfect Cirle to everyone who wants to explore Maynard Keenan's real potential as a musician.
    I love Tool, but if I would be forced to decide which band I would never hear again in my life, Tool or A Perfect Circle, I would not need the blink of an eye to choose in favor of A Perfect Circle.
    If the bands were the composition of a Maynard perfume, Tool would be the headnote, and A Perfect Circle would be the heart note. The one that reaches really deep.
    OK. That was a far stretch, LOL.
    Recommendations: Judith (simple but cool original music video), Disillusioned, 3 libras, Orestes (live video!), So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish (crazy video), The Outsider, Weak and Powerless.... Dear dudette, just listen to everything they ever made.
    Incredible songwriting, lyrics, great vocals (and background vocals), organic instrumentals, human depth (whatever this means?!). The band is a pure work of love and art and most probably the most mature and personal thing Maynard Keenan ever did and still does.
    Maybe the most underrated rock super band of all times.
    Yeah, I will for sure poke you now and then about them. Because life is too short to live without this band. I stumbled upon their first album in a record store without knowing it was a Maynard project, and my girlfriend listened into it after seeing me with the headphones, totally puzzled. And when she gave me that look, I knew she might kill me if I don't buy that album. But I did not need that to be convinced anyways... (we both heard all Tool albums before...)
    Always a pleasure to watch your videos. If Tool makes you less deaf, listen to APC, and you might rival bat ears afterwards. But nooo, no pressure. Take your time. (Of course I mean the opposite...)
    All the best, and have a great end of the week, dear Scottish Lady!
    Do you know, why I always feel good with Scottish people around me? Because I, as a German, am not the one with the worst English in the room anymore. ☺

The band is very different from Tool and (his other, other band lol) A Perfect Circle. Puscifer seems to be his "having fun" medium and he does a lot of experimentation with it. Not as sombre or serious as Tool but still has the lyrical quality that Maynard is great at. Plus, they are usually always accompanied by very fun and trippy music videos.

    3:31 "It's so unsettling. Does it just come back to 4/4?”
    It never left 4/4. There are some brief 6/8 sections, but no part of this song is in a complex time signature.
    Listen to it again. Once the drum kit enters, focus on the snare drum. It keeps a steady beat on 2 and 4 through nearly the entire song.
    The rest is just heavy syncopation giving a convincing 11 over 8 feel. Each of the 11 beats is 3/16 long, except the last beat is only 2/16 to fit cleanly into 2 bars.
    For a real headspin, try counting "Pneume."

    Oh cool, you listened to "The Pot" also; btw, off topic, but "1960-what" was the 1st song I heard by Gregory Porter and it's incredible. Kinda wish I heard his other stuff first because I want more of his songs to be like that and that particular song is the most different from his catalog.
    Also, off topic, do you know Cassandra Wilson? If not, you might love her. "New Moon Daughter". Try it.
    Other vocalists you should hear: Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance & solo); Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins, Sun's Signature, Massive Attack, etc), Beth Gibbons (Portishead, Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man). Go get 'em!

    I didn't request the song, but Sober and The Pot typically get requested first because their more conventional style is more easily accessible for first time Tool listeners. Once you get the flavour of those, people will then start requesting some of their more out there, more progressive tracks such as Lateralus, The Grudge, Rosetta Stoned etc. The Pot isn't heavily requested because it's the best. It's just one of the best introductions to Tool. I hope you find boundless joy diving deeper into this band. They're absolutely phenomenal!

    Vocalists, when people say 'the voice is also an instrument': True! The voice is definitely an instrument!
    Vocalists, when vocals aren't way too loud in the mix and rob all the other instruments of their impacts: HOW DARE YOU TREAT THE VOICE AS AN INSTRUMENT, IT NEEDS TO BE LOUDEST

    • @SoulSingerDiscovers
      @SoulSingerDiscovers  11 месяцев назад

      Dude, I’ve been gigging for 15 years and I have never heard a singer say anything close to this. Besides, even if a singer asks to be louder in their monitor, a singers instrument is finite. Guitar strings and drum skins can be replaced. BUT if we replaced what you just said with guitarists, well that would be an incredibly accurate statement.

    I dig your review. This is my first watch. Forget about keeping up with the time signatures, you’ll drive yourself nuts. This is one of their most straightforward songs though in 4x4. But earphones really make a big difference with Tool sound effects and panning etc. so you may want to listen a second time with headphones. Btw did you watch Sober live? It’s their first big hit in ‘92 I think. His posture is crazy along with his pink pajama dress outfit.

    As every Tool fan will tell you, the answer to "What time signature is that?" is "Yes." For example, the chorus for "Lateralus" is written in multiples of 3 bars in 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8, while "Schism" has something around 45-50 signature changes.
