The thing I love most about these reaction videos is now "regular" people can see what us have been saying for years. The lyrics, vocals, music, and community have been family for a lot of us.
So excited that you’ve gotten into chino. If you dive into his music I think you’ll find some surprisingly operatic characteristics, as well and unbelievably unique uses of pitch and texture. He is a master at bending pitch and threading the atonal needle. He’s also one of a very few rock singers with a whistle register!
The late 90’s was quite a time. I was in my late teens, and every day was like you described.. hazy, moody, psychedelic. Music like this paved the way.
It should appeal to anyone with a Cluster B personality disorder (vampires included), but even someone like me love the sound. Not always crazy about his dark, sadistic, lyrics, but I cannot fault his vocal prowess and the musicianship in the band.
You aren't the only one to think this. This song was in Queen of The Damned. Not the best book to movie adaptation, but if you havent read the book it isn't a bad movie in my opinion. The soundtrack for that movie is full of songs like this.
I wish I could listen to Deftones for the first time again. To watch you live and explain my first experience with Chino's vocals is lovely. It's like being induced into a coma. He makes me melt into my headphones and completely leave my body.
He puts so much emotional inflection into his songs , I'd recommended him to a friend that I sometimes perform with . My friend has a great voice , but doesn't really throw himself into the music like this and so his stage presence suffers from it . Chino really draws you in with how he expresses himself and so when the hard parts hit , it's like you just got the hit of a triple espresso .
Can't remember if I ever heard his vocals on point live. Even when you listen to his studio versions they aren't note perfect, it's kind of the point I guess.
I love how excited Elizabeth gets over unique voices, I knew she'd love Chino 😄 "My Own Summer" is another great song by Deftones I'd love to see a reaction to. I'd also LOVE to see some reactions to Placebo and Muse. Both Brian Molko and Matt Bellamy have very unique voices in their own way.
Finally someone that appreciate Chino's amazing vocals and overall Deftones peculiar sounds. Thank you for always enlighten us with your perspective and positive feedback once again 🙏
Digital bath please! My favorite deftones song ever. Plus the instrumentals in that song are second to none as well. This is my favorite deftones album. I have the album cover tattooed on my leg! Great video...thanks
Chino is a great vocalist. You have mostly heard his lower range. But he also does harsh vocals as well. “My Own Summer (Shove it)”, “Head Up”, “Engine No.9” are some examples of that big change. #Deftones
I just finished recommending "My Own Summer! Awesome tune! "Engine No. 9" is my favorite song on the album, though. Prolly a little too cussy for Elizabeth (or rather, the channel) however.
The great thing about Chino is that you've only scratched the surface with his vocals. He can go from metal screaming and gentle singing in the same song at times from part to part. Hexagram = almost all screaming Teenager = some of the most vulnerable sounding vocals ever
When I was a Teenager (pun intended) that one and Anniversary Of an uninteresting event absolutely destroyed me. The versatility of going from Elite to Teenager and Hexagram to Anniversary is what will always make them my favorite band ever
If you're into insane vocal changes from a single singer I can highly recommend Opeth, the best single song example from them is "Lotus Eater", but the change from "Coil" to "Heir Apparent" is also insane. Funny enough all of these are off the same album, "Watershed", I actually didn't intend that.
Вокал Чино - это отдельный вид искусства. Каждый день слушая песни Deftones и других его проектов я всё больше в этом убеждаюсь. Очень информативный и качественный разбор вокала, я полностью разделяю ваше восхищение его вокалом
White Pony is considered their best work and I agree. Every song is a banger, and every song showcases the band's totally unique sound in different ways.
@@TrickerAgainstDaOdds Yeah I guess it's a matter of taste but White Pony got a little bit of everything. Koi is more chill, and I'd rather put that on when I want to calm down. But overall I like their heavy stuff more. Around the Fur and White Pony is top 2 for me
This song is the musical equivalent of sinking beneath the surface of the pacific ocean out past the third breaker just after sunset. It's dark, it's cool, it's a little scary, it's oddly comforting, and it's all you can think about when you're in it. I would strongly recommend Knife Prty after this one. It is an excellent song, and you get a truly unique Chino moment in it.
Chino is my all time favourite vocalists. And deftones are my favourite band, they have got me through the hardest times in my life. It's so great to see this and see someone feel his vocals like I always have. It's rare because they are an underground band that should have way more recognition. R.I.P chi cheng ✌️
Mic Cupping + Multi-tracking + heavy chorus effect + whispering>yelling/screaming into castrated vibrato. Chino's signature formula only recently imitated by other vocalists, but not fully. One of my favorite!
Did you notice that he sings whilst pulling in the air as well. That's so unique and really incredible. On the turn of the melody "In You" and " Had Wings for example.
Finally! I thought with “Passenger” it was Deftones but wasn’t a deep study of Chinos voice… Great choice, great band, great vocals, greatly appreciated
I feel this still isn't a study of Chino's voice. He's one of the most unique, dynamic and creative vocalists in rock and metal, but this song showcases none of what he can really do
Deftones has been 1 of the most influential bands for me. They helped move the heavy scene forward & open to more experimentation IMO. RIP Chi. A legend.
What I love about Chino is that you can tell it's all feel. He knows what his voice can do, which is where some control comes in to play, but feel is what fuels the spontaneous nature of his voice. Also, I definitely put my vote in for Knife Prty as a follow up song to check out! I would love to hear your analyses (and reaction) of the vocal done by Rodleen Getsic on that track. Cheers!
Knife Prty is a must listen Deftones track imo. Would love to see your take on the guest vocals from Rodleen Getsic as her performance is unlike anything I have EVER heard! Simply breathtaking and downright otherworldly.
I love your take on these performances. You give very in-depth commentary that I would normally never give a second thought. It's like listening for the first time again. Thank you
Chino is the master of moistly whispering in your ear. Deftones kinda walks this line between comforting and creeping you out at the same time, it's quite a feat. Like others have said, Digital Bath is a great showcase of his style as well. Knife Prty is pretty wild in the end
You should really check out the original soundtrack from Queen of the Damned. It was produced by Jonathon Davis and this song was part of it. The vocal blends are like nothing I've ever heard before or since. Truly original!
THANK YOU for doing Deftones and I hope you do more songs from them! They are one of those bands that make you FEEL something with every song. They are my top band and I can listen to them every day and it never gets old.
A friend of mine used to say that Chino in a way sounds like you would play a saxophone. Thx for reintroducing me to my favorite bands from back in the day, like D-tones, Korn and SoaD. When this stuff came out, it wasn't reflected by many people as the artwork it represents. But especially Deftones is a timeless band to me. I just wished they would behave more like friends would, these days...
Chino's voice has done things to me for YEARS! He's massively underappreciated imo. If you've not already heard it, you need, need, need to listen to them cover Drive. It's just ethereal in its beauty and simplicity and one of my favourite covers in the whole wide world.
@@maddo-md4mu cover, reinterpretation...whatever yous call it, its the same thing! The Cars did the original, but the Deftones version is pure perfection!
@@pixiebelle7381 oh... the cars cover. Forgot about that. That is a great track! Thought you meant the AtF track or the Incubus team up. There are too many songs called drive 😅😎✌
Chino's voice has a quality to it that can't be found many other places. Super soft, yet powerful at the same time, it's about unreal. I've been a fan of his since 1996.
Chino’s voice is definitely an instrument capable of many sounds, how he plays with it gives songs a deeper emotive expression. I will forever love this band, a big one in the soundtrack of my life.
Thank you so much for highlighting one of the greatest. Fascinating is a word you used a lot to describe Chino, and it is the perfect word. He paints such a rich tapestry with his voice, you can't help but be absorbed by it. But it's truly the sum of the whole band's vibe and how he chooses both pitch and texture to weave into the song to express these deep sentiments that makes them legendary. Love your analysis.
There are SO many great Deftones songs. For example: "Rosemary", "Swerve City", "Sextape", "Tempest", "be quite and drive"... ans SO many more. I know you can´t analize them all, but each of them would be worth it. Thank you sooo much for your awesome work!!! 🤩
Truly a musicians band. The influence they had on metal and rock in the coming years is still heard today. Thanks for this video, and appreciation, of a true juggernaut
What sets Chino apart, in my opinion, is his melody writing. He never goes for the expected note. Lots of sharp 4ths, flat 6ths, major 7ths, and so on. He's a master of using note choice to create tension and release.
Elizabeth, I love your reactions. You are so expressive, emotional, really a person who loves music, just like us who watch the videos and appreciate all these singers with their voices filled with the most varied feelings. Thanks so much for that reaction. I love Chino's voice. Greetings from Brazil.
Terry Date 's engineering is sublime on Deftone's Records. That 'airy megaphone' effect he came up with for Chino (bandpass filter into chorus and distortion) gave the band a very unique sound. That and Chino loves to land on 6ths and 9ths alot is a total vibe.
I think it's awesome that you give recognition to Terry. So many people forget the producers and the engineers that make these pieces of Art explode in final production
@@jeffhelton3364 Yeah sadly I'm only aware because I make music for a living. I wish more people understood. Producers are like film directors, you need a good producer to coral 4 egos into a single cohesive vision that can sell! Artists that can successfully self produce are extremely rare. And ones that can self produce and engineer even rarer. Bands even even rarer! Theres no MJ without Quincy, there's no Beatles without George, and there's no System of Down without Rick Ruben!
I was a teenage rock kid in the late 90’s being introduced to korn, tool and deftones amongst many others. These three bands in general, for me did so much with music but chino and the deftones are the band that I still get moved so much by. White Pony album for me really showcases their talent and chinos ability which is why I keep banging on about “knife party” and in terms of duets the female vocals on this track in particular just blows me away…
Glad to see more Deftones! I'm really hoping you'll do Knife Prty too, as it has an AMAZING vocal solo in the middle. But there are other songs which showcase Chino's range and skills which are also amazing. He also can do some amazing screams! :D
I love the way you pause talk then go back 10 or 20 seconds to hear it again. It's the only thing I'm OCD with and not rewinding chews me up inside when people want to talk in the middle of a song. Your videos are always satisfying. Thanks.
this song never fails to give me chills, even more so now i've heard your breakdown of it. on the line "i pulled off your wings and i laughed" you can hear chino smiling when he says "wings" and it sounds to me like there's a phaser effect to make it sound like a chuckle as it fades out. i've also seen a lot of people mention chino's voice being utilised as an instrument, and with that comparison i'd like to recommend checking out converge. jacob bannon's vocals are monstrous
Deftones are my favorite band. They basically reinvent themselves every album. You should check out Digital Bath, Be Quiet and Drive, Tempest, Minerva, Diamond Eyes, Royal, or Rosemary.
Something really interesting about Chino is that his melodies feature a lot of sustained upper partials like 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths, which give it an unresolved, unsettled, lingering feeling.
I used to listen to this song all the time in my early 20's and never really realised quite how disturbing it is - in a good way. What an amazing voice. It feels like listening to an auditory hall of mirrors at a creepy carnival. Love your reaction to this and, as usual, I've come away feeling like I've learned something. Thank you!
Rehab really brought a lot out of him and thank goodness they were able to make White Pony. It always blew my mind that an album addressing speed, had such a slow, rolling, intense atmosphere… Like if he’s still did the stuff he wouldn’t be able to take the song so slow. ❤
So glad you're doing more Deftones reactions. Singer does some unique stuff with his voice, but I also love their production effects, like the static making it sound like an old vinyl analog recording. I normally judge a band based on how they sound live, but when you put out an amazing production, at some point it doesn't really matter if they can replicate that on stage.
I love your videos because all the music I've been listening to my whole life is new to you and I get to relive that shocking euphoria of the first taste vicariously through you. Thank you for taking an interest in all things dark and metal🤟🤘 I hope to hear some vocal work from you soon! Bless you and your family!

@@phranklinenglert7825 Ooh yeah. I also liked their version of Simple Man
Yes, one of my favorite covers ever. My favorite band covering one of my musical anchors in Sade.
@@phranklinenglert7825 omg YES YES YES
@@phranklinenglert7825Night Boat is great too.
I've loved this song since I heard it on Queen of the Damned. His voice makes my brain vibrate in the best way, it's completely unique
First time I heard it was on a dragon ball z movie lol
That movie had an amazing soundtrack! It was produced by Jonathan Davis.
I almost wish that was the video with this music. I feel like the music vid for this song is such a mismatch of the sound.
@@earthscorcher lmao what? No it’s not you just don’t understand it you goofy
Right!! I can't hear this song without picturing Stuart Townsend as Lestat..
The freaking bass and drum groove is one of the best ever. This track is a banger
So true! I was counting the whole time!! Hahaha
I always felt like Deftones music was made for vampires. I love the mood their music creates.
That's what I tell everyone I know. It's vampire music lol
You're right.
Facts
I wish I could listen to Deftones for the first time again.
To watch you live and explain my first experience with Chino's vocals is lovely. It's like being induced into a coma. He makes me melt into my headphones and completely leave my body.
He puts so much emotional inflection into his songs , I'd recommended him to a friend that I sometimes perform with . My friend has a great voice , but doesn't really throw himself into the music like this and so his stage presence suffers from it . Chino really draws you in with how he expresses himself and so when the hard parts hit , it's like you just got the hit of a triple espresso .
What's crazy is that Chino can still pull off these vocals live, seeing them last year was an absolute dream
i've seen some pretty bad live vocals
Idk what show you saw but his vocals are def not the same which is understandable
No they aren’t lnfao it’s prerecorded
@@rushyy8765 it's not, at least not the show I went to, sure he's not pitch-perfect, but he is damned close
Can't remember if I ever heard his vocals on point live. Even when you listen to his studio versions they aren't note perfect, it's kind of the point I guess.
Diamond Eyes is one of their best songs in my opinion. Definitely worth a vocal breakdown
How about Passenger with Maynard from, Tool, Perfect Circle, Pucifer. I agree with you about Diamond Eyes though. Really a lot of depth to that song.
@@MeatBattery Elizabeth has already done a reaction to "Passenger" it's on her channel 🙂
I have a verse tattooed on my thigh for my amazing parents that passed in my early 20s.
I hope she does this song! 💗🖤
I think Tempest and Korea from a vocal standpoint.
Vocally my choice is sextape. Diamond Eyes is a super underrated track though n it's a banger.
Placebo is love💓💓💓💓
Yes Muse would be amazing.
#Deftones
Rocket Skates / When Girls Telephone Boys / Korea
My Own Summer is my all time favorite for sure.
I just finished recommending "My Own Summer! Awesome tune! "Engine No. 9" is my favorite song on the album, though. Prolly a little too cussy for Elizabeth (or rather, the channel) however.
Yes these!!!!
I love that when you see them live they always start the show with headup such a badass song
DEFTONES!!! My favorite band...excited for this
The great thing about Chino is that you've only scratched the surface with his vocals.
He can go from metal screaming and gentle singing in the same song at times from part to part.
Hexagram = almost all screaming
Teenager = some of the most vulnerable sounding vocals ever
Around the Fur and White Pony is top 2 for me
When I first heard this song it blew my mind! Still to this day it's one of my favorite all time songs. Chino and the band are wonderful musicians.
This is really great imagery. I love it.
To me, it sounds like being in an unhealthy codependent relationship.
@@steveosk8s I wasn't referring to the lyrics, dude.
Yes yes yes to knife prty!
very well described John.
Didn't Tenacious D do a skit about that on their miniseries
Finally! I thought with “Passenger” it was Deftones but wasn’t a deep study of Chinos voice… Great choice, great band, great vocals, greatly appreciated
I feel this still isn't a study of Chino's voice. He's one of the most unique, dynamic and creative vocalists in rock and metal, but this song showcases none of what he can really do
I absolutely love Passenger! Huge Deftones and Maynard fan! Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer are all amazing.
She's gotta hear some classic chino screams next time! I vote Hexagram, royal, or around the fur
Hexagram for sure. How can he even hit that high..b?
Hexagram would have been a great choice
F8ck that, take her to Nosebleed! lol.
That nine second long scream in the coda of Royal is simply incredible.
Be Quiet and Drive
Chino has a hypnotic voice to me. I get lost in the music and listening to him sing.
Deftones has been 1 of the most influential bands for me. They helped move the heavy scene forward & open to more experimentation IMO.
RIP Chi.
A legend.
why the RIP? He's not dead as far as I know.
@@Michael-dj6pdnot Chino. Chi Cheng was their original bassist.
I LOVE HOW YOU TOOK YOUR TIME TO LOOK INTO HIS VOCALS! GREAT BAND! I CAN PLAY THIS!
I can play it too, but I can’t sing it like Chino!
Cheers!
I saw Deftones, I clicked, I liked, I watched. Describing a Deftones song as a trip is always fitting.
Thank you
This song is so intense..lyrics become images vocally expressed perfectly with the ethereal sound the band created..Incredible!
Chino is the master of moistly whispering in your ear. Deftones kinda walks this line between comforting and creeping you out at the same time, it's quite a feat. Like others have said, Digital Bath is a great showcase of his style as well. Knife Prty is pretty wild in the end
One of his best vocal performances imho is Be Quiet and Drive. So raw and clean.
Oooh, that's a good one. I've recently fallen in love with Sex Tape (hate the name, love the sound lol).
@@le_th_ Awesome one too!!!
You should really check out the original soundtrack from Queen of the Damned. It was produced by Jonathon Davis and this song was part of it. The vocal blends are like nothing I've ever heard before or since. Truly original!
Great suggestion
That soundtrack is the ever made imho... the lost highway being possibly the second best one.
Or the Lost Highway soundtrack.
Freddy vs. Jason had an amazing soundtrack too.
Chino is the master. Ill never forget hearing this band in 1995 before they even had an album out! Great show accompanied with two other great bands!
His voice feels soothing to me. The guitars too. With that deep groove it feels hypnotic. Love this band.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Started listening to them in my 20s and now im 50 and still listening to their new stuff.
Chino's voice has done things to me for YEARS! He's massively underappreciated imo. If you've not already heard it, you need, need, need to listen to them cover Drive. It's just ethereal in its beauty and simplicity and one of my favourite covers in the whole wide world.
Cover? It's not a cover!
My pleasure!
There are SO many great Deftones songs. For example: "Rosemary", "Swerve City", "Sextape", "Tempest", "be quite and drive"... ans SO many more. I know you can´t analize them all, but each of them would be worth it. Thank you sooo much for your awesome work!!! 🤩
Finally! I have been waiting for this :) DEFTONES my #1 favorite band!
The meaning of the song.. is about substances in a corner bag.. when tied together it has wings… when set on fire.. you see the change in people
Truly a musicians band.
One of my favorites of all time. Everyone at my high school had this album it seems.
Elizabeth, I love your reactions. You are so expressive, emotional, really a person who loves music, just like us who watch the videos and appreciate all these singers with their voices filled with the most varied feelings. Thanks so much for that reaction. I love Chino's voice. Greetings from Brazil.
Saw then live for the first time last year. Great show!
@@BuzzaB77 Rick is The Man 🙌. And Evil Joe Barresi is right there with him
I was a teenage rock kid in the late 90’s being introduced to korn, tool and deftones amongst many others.
I live with Digital Bath on constant loop in my mind. It never stops. Its like living with tinnitus. Because..... tonight I feel like more.
I give you the gun.... blow me away..
He has some of the most brutally painful screams in the song Hexagram. He has lots of range!
When Girls Telephone Boys too. Absolutely razor-like.
Awesome! I was hoping you would do this one someday. This is what I think of when I think deftones.
My favorite band, this band gets deep the more you go.
Deftones is pure baby-makin' music. Seen them a couple times - excellent live
The staying power of Deftones is a testament to just how badass they are. I’ll never not stop an listen to this song.
Thank you!
White Pony is one of the most interesting and amazing albums of all-time. I was a Deftones fan before, but this album was something else entirely.
Rehab really brought a lot out of him and thank goodness they were able to make White Pony. It always blew my mind that an album addressing speed, had such a slow, rolling, intense atmosphere… Like if he’s still did the stuff he wouldn’t be able to take the song so slow. ❤
Deftones is the band that made me fall in love with music. And then over and over again every day.
I just screamed “SHE DID IT!” 😂
Ive been waiting to hear her go at this masterpiece
I love your videos because all the music I've been listening to my whole life is new to you and I get to relive that shocking euphoria of the first taste vicariously through you. Thank you for taking an interest in all things dark and metal🤟🤘 I hope to hear some vocal work from you soon! Bless you and your family!
This awesome. I remember when I first saw these guys on the warped tour in 98 when I was in high school. Now I am an old head so it’s good to see people still listening to these guys. They were awesome live the times I saw them. Good job. Chino is very unique.
