  • I love Serj Tankian's vocals. It's an understatement how impressed at the technical prowess he employed when listening to "Aerials" and again here with "Toxicity". The message of this song I feel, having lived in Los Angeles and considering it my home-base. It's a very interesting parallel in relation to over places I've lived throughout my career. I cannot wait to continue to dig deeper into System Of A Down's catalogue!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to System Of A Down performingh "Toxicity" for the very first time.

The song is according to them, talking about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The energy of the song and the seemingly random lyrics depict the chaos in the mind of someone with ADHD and all the distractions we face. "Somewhere between the sacred silence (a divine nonexistent stillness of thought/noise) and sleep, disorder x3" describing that all waking hours are disorder. One of the defining features of SOAD - among their amazing instrumentation and songwriting - is how aggressively they crash in with thrashing drums and roaring strings, then how swiftly they float into heavenly choirs and heartrending melodies.
Serj really has an incredible voice. His transitions are so glorious - goes up like sunday service and comes down like murder. It’s magnificent. His vibrato technique is wonderful, but beyond that, it’s just so well written into the music that I think it punches out of its weight class.

A bit dramatic for my taste at the time, but the fucker was right. This whole arc sometimes happens across the whole song (Chop Suey), while in other tracks it can be rushed between the instrumental intro and the first verse (Toxicity). "Toxicity" Is definitely a 21st classic metal album if there ever was one. It sounds as fresh today as it did when it came out almost 21 years ago. I absolutely recommend you checking out "Spiders" and "Sugar" from their self-titled debut album.
Sadly, the "Toxicity" album had the misfortune of being released on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. Despite being Armenian-Americans, in the aftermath of the attacks the band faced racism because they looked different and had "funny" sounding names. Also, after 9/11 their single, "Chop Suey!", which came out in August 2001, was pulled from radio play due to having the line "self-righteous suicide" which people associated with the attacks.

I love the way that you interpret music more importantly singers. I'm a singer myself and I also play the guitar but I've always been a front man and a singer and I studied so many great singers just like you do in rock and roll. There's something about rock and roll that's different than any other genre there's a wrongness and emotionalness and nothing hold back I've always played rock and roll for that reason and I grew up studying rock and roll, it's a beautiful thing that you do especially with the singers that have passed. I love your honesty in the ones that you truly like and the ones that you're not very fond of especially the ones that you're not very fond of you still give them credit and the fact that you're an opera singer and a trained voice coach is so impressive I'm sorry for the long message but I've been watching your videos for about 2 months now and I just think they're so impressive thank you so much for what you do

He was in a team that sang opera in Armenia. Rumours say he is a well trained opera singer, he might be, but he is not using any of those techniques in his SoaD-performances.
Rumours said that Freddie Mercury was a trained opera singer too, but it shows he took some classical piano courses in Mumbai only.
Serj has not said it himself and until he does I do not buy the "trained opera singer" story.

The whole opera training thing is a myth. In several interviews from the last year to promote his solo ep, he discusses how he has never had any formal music training. He's only been in only other band, with daron called Soil, and he started out playing keys. He considers himself to be a poet, and singing to be a great way to delivery his poetry. Don't get me wrong, i am a huge fan. But it's natural talent and not proper training. From what i understand, his lack of training is a huge factor in why they don't play many shows any more. The screaming and growly bits really hurt him. He just doesn't want to sing like that anymore.

SOAD drummer John Dolmayan told MTV: "'Toxicity' was one of those songs where we hadn't done anything like it before.
It required something completely different than any other System song did. The guitars are just, in some ways, really powerful, and in others, they just step back so that the melody can take over a little bit. So it's a really good combination of aggression and melodic elements, which represents this album."
