Gosh this song. A dear friend ended her own life just over a year ago now, I hadn't linked this song to her passing before watching this video. Feeling my own chest tighten and my throat closing up as soon as the chords first hit, I remember how the deftones were the topic of one of the first conversations we had many many years ago. Janneke, you were a beautiful soul and I'm so sorry you couldn't find the peace that you deserved in this world. I truly hope you are at peace now my friend.
I would love to see Knife Prty,it is so incredibly complex from a vocal standpoint (Not just Chino Moreno's vocals but also Rodleen Getsic's incredible performance) it would be so exciting to see it covered here!
Co-signed, Rodleens performance on that song is out of this world, when it gets towards the **ahem** climax, it reaches a point where her vocals are torn oscillating somewhere between orgasmic cries of ecstasy and tortured shrieks of pain, which given the lyrical themes is very apt Unreal song from a front-to-back god tier album!
one of the best rock songs of all time. Everything Chino touches is just gold, man. I recommend anyone to check out his side projects, Crosses and Team Sleep.
QUICK REMINDER: isn’t it absolutely insane that Chino did not ever take any vocal lessons until white pony, isn’t it insane how talented his natural voice is?
This has been my favorite song for 20 years... every time I hear it, I just get this vibe of relaxation I haven't been able to get from any other song.
One thing I haven't heard you talk a lot about is Chino's note choice. He's rarely singing chord tones (root, 3rd, 5th). For example, this vocal melody starts on the 2nd/9th, I believe. What this does is create a feeling of tension that he only releases briefly and occasionally. But it goes beyond that. He also plays with moments of extreme dissonance, not just singing upper extensions like the 9th/11th/13th, but notes from completely different keys. He'll even sing microtones. Because of the level of control he has, we somehow register it as not simply "out of tune." He bends into or out of a pitch at the end of a note. For me, these note choices define the Deftones sound. It's beauty contrasted with dissonance. The beauty comes from Chino's soft delivery and the wall of fuzzed-out guitar playing dense note clusters. The dissonance comes from the note choices.
Upper extensions are definitely a bit part of their sound as well as sustaining dissonance that resolves on a chord change. Another thing is their frequent use of a half chorus after the first verse like in this song. I’m so glad they’re enjoying a bit of boost from the younger generation. Shows how timeless their music is.
I kinda figured that Chino was using some notes as opportunities to bend chromatically upward by a half step before going back down. I’m not sure what his process was for note choice but it’s really cool to hear him. Deftones don’t have a single bad song.
This band is still doing it at the highest level… it is very rare to have a legendary band like this still producing excellence. We are very blessed and any time I have a chance to see them live I will this band is the top five all-time. Their OHMS CD is a masterpiece
Chino is a great example of how a voice and abilities change with age. I'm a good way in my opinion. They have been around for so long and have a good catalog of music. They are a band that I discovered very early in their career when I was in my 20s. Now I'm almost 50. Still love them.
Me too mate… been around since the start with them and now approaching 50. Check out the song Chino did with Polyphia recently called bloodbath, it’s awesome. Cheers
The one thing I love about this channel is that I will find a song that she reviews that I like, watch her whole video, then go back and re-listen to the song in a new perspective. It’s just awesome.
There's an incredible acoustic version of this song where chino really leans heavily into his characteristic breathy voice tone that you were so struck by in "Passenger," well worth checking out even if not for a video
R.I.P. Chi Cheng. (Bass player) Deftones go hard af too! Chino has one of the best screams in the game. This song is super chill compared to how heavy they can get with songs like Bloody Cape and RATS! RATS! RATS! They’re very versatile when it comes to being soft and melodic, and switching it up to pig squealing screams and heavy guitar riffs. Deftones are amazing. Additional: Chino has undergone reconstructive throat surgery from blowing out his vocal chords!!! He’s still working to this day! The champ has still got it. 💪🏽 “Invisible Hands,” by Crosses (Chino’s side group) came out about a month ago. Check it out! It’s cool.
Seeing you the first time. In the beginning. I was a little annoyed how often you went back an relistened and commented. But then I realized that you‘re taking your time to analize, share your feelings and knowledge. I appreciate you. You have a new follower.
You nailed it. Deftones make music that...I can't explain how it makes me feel. They just create a sound that strikes emotion and feelings like few bands can. Also the only thing I hate about this video is that it cuts the song short.
Yeah, the intro is so amazing! I love the way it builds up till the silence, Chino's sigh and then, the BANG! with the other instruments...makes me chill every time
Yes some more deftones! Brings back some great memories. Can’t wait til you check out more of chino’s vocal ranges like in “Digital bath” and “Cherry waves”. “Xerces” is my personal favorite 🔥🔥🔥
This song is the song of my adolescence. To this day it still makes me shake and feel all the emotions and sensations as if it were the first time I heard it. It's great to see you discover and analyze this treasure of a song. Chino's voice is so beautiful and powerful that it creates such a unique atmosphere. Watching your videos makes me value the music I love more and appreciate it from another point of view. Greetings from Argentina.
YES! So happy to see you reviewing another Deftones classic. Shove It and Be Quiet & Drive we're the first two songs that drove me to the Deftones. I had never heard something that could be so hard, haunting, and beautiful at the same time. If you continue down your Chino journey, be sure to check out Shove It or 7 Words for a more screamy tracks, and their later more experimental metal offerings like Sex Tape, Rosemary, Cherry Waves, Ohms, and so many more. And when you're all done you must check out Crosses †††, Chino's newest side project. Think Depeche Mode meets Deftones, more electronic, but just as haunting.
@HighlandCoo same. I have never loved another person the way I love the sound of his voice. I would betray life, liberty and my country for his music. 😊
Also the album this is off of, Around the Fur is one of my favorites of all time. Just raw pure emotion and energy. Recorded in their shortest amount of time, and still has such a dynamic impact. Chino uses a lot of female sexuality inflections in his vocals I find. The song MX to me displays this the most where I think he really channels Sade. He is a big female vocalist fan!
I've watched LOTS of reactions to this song and you're the FIRST to pick up on the anxiety breath in the beginning. I remember listening to this cd when it first came out, in a quiet room, totally immersed in this world already and that breath gave me chills of joy.
I love Chino’s vocals in “Hexagram”. It’s a solid piece that shows his versatility. Also, his performances with his side project Crosses are interesting.
That last scream in Hexagram before the quiet “it’s the same sound” part is insane. Would love to see her reactions to Chino’s more brutal vocals- bloody cape, Royal, rocket skates, etc
@meinrapture I can't remember exactly, but I wanna say 2004 I got to accidentally see Team Sleep live. I saw Chino come out, and was excited, and confused. They absolutely rocked.
You NEED to hear Digital Bath. I only just recently got into Deftones, but I’ve never heard Chino hit a note like he did in Digital Bath. The high note he hits in that song might be my single favourite note in a song.
So glad to see this song get more attention these days. Been one of my favorite Deftones songs since I heard it when the album was released. Brings me right back to the first time listening to it every single time
This is one of my all time favourite songs. Like so many others have said in the comments, there's just something so special about this song. Musically it's literally 2 chords repeated, but there's so much else going on. It's a sound that has since often been copied by other bands, but never really equalled. Probably because those other bands didn't have Chino. The acoustic version of this song is incredible.
but also i think sometimes the other band members dont get enough credit.. What would the deftones have been with a different founding drummer? Or guitarist? But chino is unique for sure
It's so crazy to see this band that I loved and saw live for the first time 25 years ago have this amazing renaissance. I love that so many people are seeing what an incredible band this is, finally. They deserve every bit of success. Also, as always, great breakdown, and as a fan I appreciate the respect and joy you show for the source material.
FINALLY 😭 I've been checking this channel every week for more Deftones reactions! Please keep them coming, Chino has such a special voice that sounds different depending on the track, you haven't heard nothing yet! 🤩
I'd love to see you do something by Crosses. Maybe the newest entry. Chino's very in his element bc hes a huge Cure, Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, Cocteau Twins fan. Crosses scratches that itch. He does a lot of interesting vocal inflections for Crosses! Love your stuff always. Love hearing a vocalists perspective on my favorite singers!
you should hear it live. it's seriously unreal. i've been listening to Deftones since i was a kid. My stepdad was a big fan, and in turn, my sister and i became fans as well. His stage presence is unparalleled.
The Deftones are a great band, I started listening to them when I was 18 or 19. My kids are teenagers and discovered them on their own, and listen to them more than I ever did. The music just touches you
@@mbii7667I don't think they did. The 'Radiohead' version I heard was on a bootleg Radiohead CD and was clearly Chino singing. If I'm wrong I'm happy for someone to link me to the Radiohead version
chino has mastered singing gentle like a feather but also have this powerhouse heavy yearning. you can listen to deftones on your worst day and your best one because of this duality that he just seamlessly floats through
one thing i love about Chino is that even though he's talked about song meanings before and he doesn't mind it - he often will refuse to tell an interviewer what a song "means" because as he says: it means something to him when he sings it, but that wouldn't mean anything to anyone else, and it's better to have your own connection and meaning that will be personal and powerful to you... I couldn't agree more
Thanks for this wonderful reaction, and for sharing your own emotions and experiences. Listening to my favourite bands through your ears is an absolute treat and always helps me to appreciate songs I know and love on a new level. Chino's vocals are totally unique, so nuanced and engaging with huge variation song by song but always recognisable. I'd love to see your reaction to Digital Bath, Cherry Waves, Minerva or Rocket Skates, but I'll happily listen to any Deftones reaction from you.
Your so dope.. you bring back how they made me feel at 13 hearing these albums for the first time. I wanted to tell ppl all of these observations. 🤘 Chino pro vida puro Vicente Fernandez por metal!!
I take such pleasure listening music with you, it's like I'm listening for the first time, but with that anticipation that YOU will hear it for the first time too. These moments give me goosebumps. Thank you for sharing the love of haunting voices and inspiring music!
I've seen both "Knife Prty" and "Digital Bath" live... And OMG! JUST BLEW MY MIND! Also have to give a great shout out to Abe Cunningham on creating a magnificent groove and atmosphere through his drums!
Thank you for doing this. Even though I chose a healthcare profession, music runs hard in my family. I used to have a long walk to my classes and I would listen to this. Chino is amazing. Even just now I felt like I was going to cry. It's magical.
Great reaction! Deftones specialize in creating beautiful dissonance. They use musical contrast to create a blended, unified sound together that makes sense sonically, even when it sometimes feels like it shouldn't. The guitar scoops out all the mids, Chino's voice is contrasting enough to the rest of the music between his intense soft tones and emotional, louder volume singing that drives the melody over Abe, Chi and Frank's backing beats. They are a great band that continues to add new audiences over the years as fresh generations embrace their sound.
Those distorted sounds at the end during the breakdown are vocals! As insane as that sounds, he’ll occasionally do them live. Sonic Temple Day 4 on 5/28/23 is a good example.
I just watched your other two Deftones videos last night and was wondering when you would do another one! So excited to hear your thoughts on this one. One of my favorite songs ever. It just gets me emotional every time. Deftones are masters of creating an incredible atmosphere and immersing listeners deeply. And Chino's voice is just magical. So many incredible different sounds he can create.

My fav deftones song still after listening to them for 28 years. Goosebumps all day. This single version misses the ending of about another 30 secs of the track. And yes it's his vocal screaming. The beauty of Chinos voice covers all spectrums through their discography. Your breakdown of the emotions he makes us feel nearly brought me to tears and made me realise why I love this track so much. Well done.
Your description about this song being perfect to drive and ignore the world made me cry. I lost my brother, my best friend, almost a year ago. And that comment brought everything back. All ive wanted to do since that day was run away. I miss him.
Chino is so cool when you see him live....he's just living a dream and so much fun with his crowd interaction. The entire band is too. I had the privilege of seeing them in 2000 in NYC 2 days in a row...and it was an experience I'll never forget. (Miss you Chi Cheng ♥)

Thank you for breaking down this song. Your amazing level of detail helps me appreciate this song in a whole new way. I hope you will review Therion one day. If that's not already your favorite band of all time, it will be.
Deftones and specifically Chino Moreno's choice of vocals is one of the best things that ever happened to contemporary music. And this song is crazy good.
Just discovering your channel. You have such a way with words. Thank you for giving these bands the passionate analysis they deserve. Chino Moreno is a once in a lifetime vocalist and front man. There is a haunting earnest and sexuality to his singing. Not just his vocals, but his picturesque lyrics and songwriting influenced a generation of bands. Those breaths and shrieks are Deftones 101. There’s a like a beautiful helplessness when he does that.
Love Deftones! Been listening to them since 1997! If anyone reading my comment would humor me. Curious to see if you are OGs or newer fans, Millennials or Gen Z’s. It always brings a smile to my face knowing the youth are keeping the music and bands, I love alive! Thanks. Love TCV, the reactions to and exposure of different bands from the past! The excitement that is seen warms me up inside. It’s the same feelings I get to this very day when I listen. Time has went by, but the bands and albums that shaped my love of this genre haven’t changed.
Millennial here, discovered Deftones on the radio ("Change") later on in life. I admit from the opening of the song, I thought it was going to be a Breaking Benjamin track LOL
I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3000 years ago (1996) when Deftones opened up for White Zombie and Pantera at the Target Center in Minneapolis and I was reborn metal 🤘🏼☠️🤘🏼
@@timwatson9156 Being from Cali, both were great representations of NorCal and SoCal sounds of the mid 90s and 2000s. I agree with you I like the Deftones a little more. Chino and the crew for the win.
I have been a big fan of deftones since the early 2000s, I am a gulf War veteran and Chino just sets my head spinning, so much emotion and intentional emphasis at certain points. The first time I heard him say "I don't care where, just far", my hair stood on end! Thank you for the review, love your channel.
Stephens riffs are simple, yet his tone is instantly recognizable. Abes drumming just always the perfect groove. And Chino continues to bring the "Fur" to balance things. And man, do I miss Chi..was the perfect second vocalist and added some killer bass.
I consider myself so lucky to have seen one of Chi's last performances in San Antonio, TX. The band is still great, but Chi brought so much to the table.
Took a break from all of RUclips for about a year. Pleasant surprise to see you reacting to several Deftones songs upon my return. You wanting full Chino experience, Pink Maggit and Leathers are the songs that don’t get listed a lot, but you’ll never forget where Chino’s range takes you in them. From breathy haze to subdued rage to unfettered screams. Thanks for discovering a band that has meant as much to so many as maybe anything in this world.
YAY! i'm so glad you reacted to deftones again, their catalog is amazing! and so versatile! also, yeah those are vocals at the end, Chino can do some very unique screams, he actually moves the mic between his hands while screaming to achieve some sort of distorted-vibrating effect that adds intensity to his already high pitched screams. In case you were wondering, Chino has many influences as a singer from Bjork, Morrissey, Roberth Smith , Liz Fraser, Siouxsie Sioux, Simon Lebon, Pj Harvey, to both Martin Gore and Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode, among others, and one of them is Mike Patton, specially his "out of the box" screams, and that influence is very clear at the end of this song. PLEASE DO MORE DEFTONES!
This is my favorite song ever. Thank you so much for doing this! Whenever I'm upset, in a bad mood or just need to take a moment I throw this tune on and it just is such a cathartic experience. Had to learn to play it on guitar for sure ... so good ... thanks!!!
DEFTONES! Thank you for this treat. I've been a hugh fan since I saw them on the Warped Tour in 1996. One of my top 5 bands. Chino has the ability to cut through the heavy music and instantly influence the mood. He has mastered it and I consider him one of the best vocalists of our time because of this ability. The pitch, distortion, note choices, and even the screams (more so early on, Adrenaline) are simply perfect. Check out the b-sides album and Chino's side project Team Sleep for more amazing vocal examples.
I got my first car the day I turned 16. Replaced the tape deck with a CD player, bought a copy of “Around The Fur”, and hit the highway like I was Johnny Bad*ss. Good memories.
I recommend "Diamond Eyes" or "Hearts/Wires" for your next Deftones pick!! Thank you for reviewing the music I love the most. So interesting to have it reviewed and have an understanding of the mechanics of the voice and sound.
Someone told one day that there was an demo project before their debut and Chino's screams were like something that came from hell. It wasn't an growl or are scream itself, but he can make that kind of sound.
Deftones strength is not necessarily their musician ship but their ability to evoke and spread emotions. I can't always listen to them but sometimes I can only listen to them and with their intensity sometimes it feels like they are the soundtrack to my life.
I’ve never heard Deftones described the way you did in this video. Thank you for that. I’ve never been able to properly put it into words how their music affects me and helps me escape. You’ve given me a new appreciation for them ❤️

@@nobodyfwme Gotta go in chronological order to hear some serious musical evolution. That's why they're pretty much their own genre
I like her facial articulation and interpretation of the song. This is the actual song you should use to introduce anyone to Deftones
I would argue Kimdracula
My introduction was Minerva... Can't wait to listen to more songs!
How I got introduced was this song on a metal/numetal playlist a few months ago 😂 I'm a new metalcore fan but this song is amazing
Almost any song from diamond eyes, honestly. But yes, this one is such a good one.
I would love to see Knife Prty,it is so incredibly complex from a vocal standpoint (Not just Chino Moreno's vocals but also Rodleen Getsic's incredible performance) it would be so exciting to see it covered here!
Co-signed, Rodleens performance on that song is out of this world, when it gets towards the **ahem** climax, it reaches a point where her vocals are torn oscillating somewhere between orgasmic cries of ecstasy and tortured shrieks of pain, which given the lyrical themes is very apt
Unreal song from a front-to-back god tier album!
+1. That performance changed my view on what song is.
Yup, knife party is amazing. Those moans that turn into screams from rodleen in there give me goosebumps everytime!
Still gives me chills 23 years later
Yes! By far the song I’d like to see reviewed most. Can’t listen to it without getting goosebumps from those pitched screams.
one of the best rock songs of all time. Everything Chino touches is just gold, man. I recommend anyone to check out his side projects, Crosses and Team Sleep.
Team Sleep is so good. Rob Crow has some wild projects.
Palms is amazing as well!!!🔥
QUICK REMINDER: isn’t it absolutely insane that Chino did not ever take any vocal lessons until white pony, isn’t it insane how talented his natural voice is?
…which is why he blew out his voice repeatedly and lost a lot of his range.
@@theopinson3851gift and a curse
His lower range is surprisingly intact and not bad. Nothing exceptional but better than a good bit of typical tenors
i think what most people don't know is their genre is reggae before deftones was born, i think it's around 1992
@austinking2959 he doesn't sound horrible live. Seen him 4 times in the Last 4 years and all of the performances were top notch.
This has been my favorite song for 20 years... every time I hear it, I just get this vibe of relaxation I haven't been able to get from any other song.
those are absolutely vocal sounds at the end, his screams are nuts. I've seen him do it live
I always thought it was some plectrum scratching on a guitar string 😅
I think it's pick scratching accompanied by the pig squeal
Just pick scratching with rhythm
It's vocals , i Heard it live
Everyone check out this song on Music in High Places. Chino did the ending screams and it is haunting and beautiful.
The Acoustic version of this song is absolutely beautiful
Right on the money. Rick Beato does a good job breaking this down on Minerva. It makes Chinos vocals even better and more haunting.
I kinda figured that Chino was using some notes as opportunities to bend chromatically upward by a half step before going back down. I’m not sure what his process was for note choice but it’s really cool to hear him. Deftones don’t have a single bad song.
@@davidrudderham7659 actually they have at least one bad song - "back to school". I'd like to pretend this song never existed.
I’m so glad you picked up on that little inhale of breath at the start, for the longest time it’s almost been my favourite part of the song..!!
Deftones hit like very few bands can. Chino's voice is sublime 🖤
Cheers
This is easily in my top three Deftones songs. But you definitely need to listen to "Digital bath"
And then "the noose" for your next Maynard hit 😁
Both are great. The Noose is by A Perfect Circle, in case Elizabeth sees this suggestion.
Yes Yes yes
Agree
Digital bath for sure!
Your comment says 20hrs ago and this video was just posted 2hrs ago. Wth is going on?
The one thing I love about this channel is that I will find a song that she reviews that I like, watch her whole video, then go back and re-listen to the song in a new perspective. It’s just awesome.
This is one of those songs that gives you nostalgia even if you’ve never heard it before. It’s awesome.
Its funny because the way Chino dances in the mv is exactly how i dance to this song having never seen it before
There's an incredible acoustic version of this song where chino really leans heavily into his characteristic breathy voice tone that you were so struck by in "Passenger," well worth checking out even if not for a video
Yea I f#&^%#g love that acoustic version so beautiful
The video for acoustic was filmed in same location too bad ass
It is on their "B-Sides and rarities" album, has an extremely good cover of Simple Man also
R.I.P. Chi Cheng. (Bass player)
Deftones go hard af too!
“Invisible Hands,” by Crosses (Chino’s side group) came out about a month ago.
Check it out! It’s cool.
I can see that by how hard he screamed in the first 2 albums.
my own summer for the next deftones reaction, chinos screams on that one are ear grating (in a good way) and his clean vocals are beautiful
I love the way it builds up till the silence, Chino's sigh and then, the BANG! with the other instruments...makes me chill every time
@@K1MDRACUL4 Agreed. Truly one of their best songs.
Yeah I also prefer the album version, I see why they wanted to have a radio edit
So happy they are making a comeback. I always felt they were very underrated when they first came out.
Yes some more deftones! Brings back some great memories. Can’t wait til you check out more of chino’s vocal ranges like in “Digital bath” and “Cherry waves”. “Xerces” is my personal favorite 🔥🔥🔥
I'd love to hear Cherry Waves
@@jarlwhiterun7478 Yeah, it’s a real experience. She’ll definitely get lost in the beautiful sounds.
Yessss
Xerces or Xerxes?
@@JP47471 Xerces, like the xerces blue butterfly. Not xerxes like the king lol
Elizabeth is so good at describing music... "Soundscape" is such a great description for what Deftones do 👏🏼
Minerva is the Deftones song that got me hooked to Chino’s voice. There are some nuances in that vocal performance that I particularly enjoy!
That song is so beautiful.
same it was on nhl 2004 soundtrack brings me back to being 6 years old
This song is the song of my adolescence.
The acoustic version of this song is also amazing, definately worth a listen.
I love Deftones. They always seemed just a little bit different to every other metal band in the 90s. Truly distinct sound, instantly recognizable.
I can’t think of any other singer or band that sounds like them really but they are underrated in my opinion.
You maybe on to something with "Tormented Angel", but there's also ineffable sensuality to Chino's voice that gives you goosebumps
Tormented Angel of Sensual Vocals
I’ve always said that Chino’s voice is a mix of sexy and sleazy. It’s perfect. His voice does things to me 🥵
@HighlandCoo same.
You may be aware already, but they covered "No Ordinary Love" and yes it's as incredible as you'd expect.
@@EchoPenumbra very aware. Jonah from Far is actually equally impressive w Chino. They trade well.
So glad to see someone say this! That song is other worldly, and his best vocal performance IMO.
The self-titled album is my favorite. Hexagram is such a visceral way to open an album.
Team Sleep was another amazing project with Chino.
Yes, more Deftones ! Really excited to hear what you think of this amazing song :)
So glad to see this song get more attention these days. Been one of my favorite Deftones songs since I heard it when the album was released. Brings me right back to the first time listening to it every single time
The acoustic version of this was "my and my girlfriends song." So glad we got to see them live, amazing energy.
The first song I introduced to my girl was rx queen it's still "our" song
Forever my favourite song, it’s so beautiful
"Bloody Cape" could be an interesting next song to check out. It has an absolutely killer riff and Chino's vocals in the breakdown are gut-wrenching.
GOD HELP ME
Bloody Cape gets slept on, but it's my favorite Deftones song.
FINALLY 😭 I've been checking this channel every week for more Deftones reactions! Please keep them coming, Chino has such a special voice that sounds different depending on the track, you haven't heard nothing yet! 🤩
waiting for cherry waves
I like how she did a Gojira video right before this, Deftones and Gojira were both on tour together last year and it was an amazing show!
The Deftones are a great band, I started listening to them when I was 18 or 19. My kids are teenagers and discovered them on their own, and listen to them more than I ever did. The music just touches you
The acoustic version is incredible. They used it in a scene in Bosch.
Radiohead also covered this song
@@Esta-Beedwow I had no idea
@@mbii7667I don't think they did. The 'Radiohead' version I heard was on a bootleg Radiohead CD and was clearly Chino singing. If I'm wrong I'm happy for someone to link me to the Radiohead version
@@QuagaarWarrior83 yeah I think somebody mistook the acoustic version of this song (which is amazing) as Radiohead covering it for some strange reason
Loved seeing Titus' White Pony tattoo through that show!
chino has mastered singing gentle like a feather but also have this powerhouse heavy yearning. you can listen to deftones on your worst day and your best one because of this duality that he just seamlessly floats through
One of my all time favorite songs. Best listened to in the car with all the windows down.
I love that you noticed the breath in the beginning! I was always fascinated with that little part
one thing i love about Chino is that even though he's talked about song meanings before and he doesn't mind it - he often will refuse to tell an interviewer what a song "means" because as he says: it means something to him when he sings it, but that wouldn't mean anything to anyone else, and it's better to have your own connection and meaning that will be personal and powerful to you... I couldn't agree more
Your take on Chino... brought me to tears. Thank you.
Always love to hear chino flow between soft and hard or loud and quiet or clean and distorted. One of my favorite vocalists

One band that has had me in a chokehold recently is Alien Ant Farm, they always get recognized for their rendition of Smooth Criminal but what opened my eyes to more of their music is Movies.
I miss him.
Great stuff. Love that song.
Next up should be Knife Party, there are additional vocals that you will absolutely love 👍
Chino is so cool when you see him live....he's just living a dream and so much fun with his crowd interaction. The entire band is too. I had the privilege of seeing them in 2000 in NYC 2 days in a row...and it was an experience I'll never forget.

This is my all time favorite song by Deftones, and part of my anthem of growing up so dissatisfied. As a synesthesia person, this sound is so beautifully orange to me, just like your hair! Thank you for breaking down this song. Your amazing level of detail helps me appreciate this song in a whole new way.
I hope you will review Therion one day. If that's not already your favorite band of all time, it will be.
Yes, those are vocals at the end. Your ears were not failing you there, live it's literally insane.

Yes! Favorite Deftones song!
RIP Chi.. still so sad 😞
I consider myself so lucky to have seen one of Chi's last performances in San Antonio, TX. The band is still great, but Chi brought so much to the table.
Chi's grooves are certainly missed, Stephen's works are simple but he changes the timing in the middle of his riffs I find it unorthodox

Diamond Eyes is a banger.
I want to hear Digital Bath.
Your comment about how his vocals connect with the listener are spot on! As a listener you DO feel like you ARE the vocals.
Someone told one day that there was an demo project before their debut and Chino's screams were like something that came from hell. It wasn't an growl or are scream itself, but he can make that kind of sound.
His quiet voice is on full display in their B-Sides and Rarities album. The acoustic version of this song on that album is incredible.
Deftones strength is not necessarily their musician ship but their ability to evoke and spread emotions.
I can't always listen to them but sometimes I can only listen to them and with their intensity sometimes it feels like they are the soundtrack to my life.
Musicianship ain’t their strength yet They are all world class musicians. I’ll respectfully disagree
To be fair, Abe is a world-class drummer.

I’ve never heard Deftones described the way you did in this video. Thank you for that. I’ve never been able to properly put it into words how their music affects me and helps me escape. You’ve given me a new appreciation for them ❤️
I remember playing in a new band while at uni, in the evenings there was a show with Aeon Flux, new artists such as Björk, Apex Twin and The Deftones ... Amazing
