Seriously, i've watched this Danny's video a thousand times. I watched the original video and MANY reactions to it, i will never be tired of it. And my praise for Danny grows even more with each new reaction i saw.
There are some great reaction videos. I really like the professional drummers' reactions.... those two in the UK and probably my favorite - Drumming with Jarvis and Michael Palmisano.... I'm positive you've seen all of those.
I didn't even know about Tool until a few years ago and I was like "How in the hell did I not know about these guys and especially Danny Carey?" I'm a reformed drummer but it's still in my blood. It's so difficult to describe what makes Tool so unique, fascinating, and mesmerizing to those who have never played an instrument and dealt with something other than 4/4 time signatures. In songs like Invincible, there are sections where each musician is playing in a different time. Normally, something like that wouldn't be at all musical. Yet Tool manages to pull it off and then they bring the time back together seamlessly. The complexity is just off the charts and each of them make it look so effortless. There are just not enough superlatives. Each song is an incredible musical accomplishment.
I get to see these guys again in Phoenix in a couple weeks. Last time I saw them was in Hershey PA and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
These four artists in a musical group is a rare and awesome thing.I first saw them live in 1993.Seven live shows in all.Worth every penny.Tool is their own genre...How cool is that?
Rush is the group that comes to mind that showed the way to Tool. In fact having Alex Lifeson play live with Tool was a perfect synergy. The other band that comes to mind is Iron Maiden, who are a band of five ( Janick joined), that have amazing time changes and perfect unity, in very complex music
Hey guys, just stumbled on this channel, as I was in search of this particular Tool video where Danny Carey absolutely, with precision, executes a masterful performance. It was great to see someone who completely appreciated that level of sophistication and knew it was genuine and not contrived.
So looking forward to see them this year live in Germany! Bought tickets for 2 concerts and will take my 6 year old son with me, he absolutely loves Pneuma.
As u do i watch this 100 Times. I allways feal happy when watching but it^s not only the drum what is a Masterpiece for sure ! it^s the whole Song Bass Drum Guitar Voice "I know the pieces fit cause i didnt watch them falling away. Dont have enough Thumbs to take them up.
So right about Tool as a generational band. I had heard of them for a while before checking them out. It was this song that really hooked me. Explored the rest of Fear Inoculum. Went back to the Pot, Lateralus, 46 & 2 and others. Incredible.
I can never see this too many times, what a beast. From a drummer who is not worthy. The music and the drumming is next level. I think he has to be very relaxed or he would become exhausted, I would. Unless he's not human. Thank you.
Hit the nail on the head. “Boomers had Pink Floyd, Genxers have Tool.” I’ve always thought of Tool as a modern day Pink Floyd, not that they sound like Pink Floyd, but that they are on the creative level of a band like Floyd and do not sound like anything else.
Well it's kind of fun that the first time I've ever heard of Tool was just back in 2017 - I had my lunch break and was listening to Pink Floyd on RUclips, and when a colleague noticed what I was listening to he said "I think you're gonna love this" and played forty six & 2 for me...and the rest is history. You can say that he f***ed up my complete music listening, since all other music gets kind of dull and boring.
I'm a drummer, or I like to consider myself one...but he is on another level...if chris Myers is the best in the business, danny carey IS the business.
TOOL.. Love these guys is an absolute understatement. This video brings me tears of joy and healing every single time. Seen them 6 times. True masters of their art and I am so grateful to have had them in my life. They are truly a spectacle to watch and the alchemy that resonates from there music is on a metaphysical scale from the gods! ❤️🙏💫🙌
spot on with the description .. this is only keeping one song in check.. every damn song they got is another brain fucker,,, 100 of these mind bombs!!!
I think Danny is a prototype of a much more evolved human being. Our current society is not ready for a collective transformation to this type of human.
When you're a very well regarded drummer in your own right and see who you've got in your own home studio and decide to play guitar instead. :) Stewart Copeland's "Grove" with both Neil and Danny. ruclips.net/video/1mUjLAWIj7E/видео.html
i have a theory: the reason you can't "find the 1" in the song is because they're basing this song around the act of breathing. There's no "time signature" to that, so what I think Danny is doing is playing in a very "reaction"-based way, where his drumming is literally having a conversation or playing in such a way that with adam's guitar, and justin's bass riffs, it seems like a completely subliminal action, like it is with breathing. we don't think about it, but it always happens. it's just a part of our existence, and it's rarely "in the way" of anything we do.
You can’t lead a band that way. There is most definitely a 1. The rest of the band knows where it is, even if persons outside the band can’t find it. They can’t all be playing to their own interpretation of breathing.
I think it's more you're stuck with where you presume the 1 should be, because they fooled you from the beginning. When Maynard first sings "We Are" there's a strong bass note and kick drum on each; which makes you think the 1 is on "We". But it's on "Are" where the 1 actually starts. Same thing when he sings "Pneu-ma". Also, when you break down the 33/8 bars into more countable subsets, they continue that preemptive note that disguises the true 1 on the sub sets. For the main riff, try counting: 123456 123456 12 123456 123456 12 123 12 Just note this is only the first three measures; forth is different.
As a drummer for over 30 yrs myself. If you still have the passion to play, age doesn't really matter. The only issue is when the body or mind is broken and playing is not possible anymore. Up to that point, you can keep going and evolving
Yep. I'm the same age as Carey. I just saw them live for the first time two nights ago. I can't even imagine how in the hell he has the stamina to do a show like that. Peart hung it up because he was getting to the point where he could no longer play to his high standards.
Ladies n Gentlemen 59 frickin yrs old and this is basically a pros pros drum clinic. Pounding the crap out of his drums making sure it knocks the teeth out of that person in the very last row. Tentacles let loose. You guys are aware that Justin, Adam n Danny create the musical layout before Maynard begins his part? Lol and Maynard is pressing on them, stating get to it cause there's no way he's releasing final work in his late 60s. Omg new final ToOl!
Fun part is that Danny Carey joining Tool was an accident. He rented out a rehearsal room and Tool showed up for their first rehearsal but their drummer didn't and Danny offered to fill in that day.
I saw a video a couple years ago where Adam was talking about this with a reporter. Apparently, Danny said no at first, but changed his mind once he heard Paul, Adam, and Maynard start jamming. He decided to sit in with them for a few songs and the rest is history.
4:15 "I think this band with a different drummer would be completely different." I once jokingly asked a friend, "What if Danny Carey played drums for Metallica one concert? What if Lars Ulrich played drums for Tool one concert?" His response was, "One band would have their first good live performance in years, one band would have their first bad live performance in years." 😂
Danny, Justin and Adam write to 'songs' and only send it to Maynard once it's basically complete. Maynard at the point will immerse himself in it in for weeks or more and just let the lyrics flow from the composition. He said he'll intentionally listen to it on different audio sources, different environments etc...to ensure it fits everywhere possible. He's a modern day genius poet the way I see it...and this is just Tool, he has 2 other bands, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle as well!
My holy trinity of drummers is Danny Carey, Thomas Haake of Meshuggah, and Vlad Ulasevich of Jinjer. Watch drum playthroughs for those two as well. Clockworks for Thomas Haake and Mediator (among others, there’s a ton) for Vlad.

As a drummer myself over 30 yrs I can't clearly find the count. The person in the brown shirt must be the master of all drummers to count the notes correctly.
100% disagree with the comment that he must be in his own head and not aware of or listening to anything else around him. The band has said they don't play to a click track. So they are 100% listening to each other, as any good musician should.
While I do agree it is usually the drummer who keeps the time so the guitarist and bassist keep up with them. Tool isn't just any band, obviously, but Danny in some parts probably just does his thing.
@@princeofpcos9804 Check out the new (today) rig rundown from Premier Guitar with Justin. No click. And Justin explains he has to run multiple delay time settings on his pedal board because the tempo of some songs changes by the end (mostly because of Danny speeding up).
Danny's just trolling at around 10:20. He does a little drumstick flip before and then a little after, for no real reason other than flair. Play on playa.
This song is more about the time signature than the playing, nothing he’s doing is out of the ordinary that makes me say wow, yes he’s good, it’s nice and clean I’ll give him that….that section where he plays the Tom’s continuously over the bar line, is just putting it on auto pilot. Maybe in the rock world he’s one of the best but this idea of him being the greatest out there is ridiculous, go check out some fusion drummers, one guy who comes to mind is Marco Minneman if you want to talk about 4 way independence or polyrhythmic drumming. Epic. Epic behavior.
I like watching drummer react to this video... Seeing them being baffled by, and trying to figure out the time signatures is entertaining
“Humanity has a chance!” Exactly right, I feel the exact same way when watching Danny drum.
Danny's brainlock is breathtaking. A gentle giant with an incredible talent, best in the business. ❤
Agreed.
Time became a concept because Danny Carey decided to play drums 😅
