As a drummer myself, absolutely insane to learn this song the way he did in that amount of time. There's a reason why you're my biggest inspiration Portnoy!
There's a lot of ppl on the video giving Portnoy crap for taking so long to grasp it... it didn't even take him that long for how complex the song is, most drummers practice for months to learn technical songs that they're going to audition for. most of the drummers that learnt "Dance of Eternity" for the DT were practicing for months & some of them still stuffed up on parts & played incorrectly.
I agree! It’s hilarious how everyone is an expert BUT I guarantee you they could not learn that song as quickly or even be able to play it at all for that matter. It’s meant to show the process and I thought Mike and DRUMEO did an excellent job!
It's wild to see two artists that you think of as being the very upper echelon and how much it takes for them to learn what the other did. Hope they have Danny come in and do Dance of Eternity or something.
Young musicians have to understand that it's not easy, it's normal to struggle, and it takes time. It won't come overnight for any instrument. We are watching one of the best drummers in history take an entire work day to learn a 12 minute song with 10 minutes of drumming in it, and he still can't play the whole thing through in one take. The only reason he was able to pull it off at all was his love for drumming. If you don't love your instrument, kids, you won't put yourself through this. Never give up if you are learning something that you love doing. The difference between success and failure is that you stick it out long enough for other people to quit before you do. Never fear failure, because we have all dealt with failure.
I always say the same thing. It’s one thing to learn someone’s part, but understand the process that it took to write it. The time and effort that goes into some of these songs should be appreciated more than the final result.

What's funny is that Danny is currently learning Bill Bruford's King Crimson Discipline/Beat era work for that tour this summer/fall. So I think he's in his own version of hell LOL
I've learned a couple of Tool songs over time to play in front of a crowded club, and obviously it was a huge task, but the thing that has always impressed me is Danny playing whole concerts of multiple works of art that at times are very different from one to the other and going back to back is just insane.

I just can't give Tool too much credit for writing a song like this.. If it takes you 10 years of screwing around, doing side projects, and touring as Tool all during those 10 years to pull together an album worth of material, in my opinion, just don't bother. @@setonhillstudios I made my comment out of experience. I've been writing, recording, touring for a VERY long time. From that experience alone I can assure you that it should never take a decade to make an album. Complex music can always be dissected and consumed bit by bit until it becomes second nature. Maynard himself has gone on record and basically echoing my comment confirming he thinks it's ridiculous as well. As far as Dream Theater is concerned, I think having Mike back in the band was a huge positive step. He is such a master musician and writer. I'm looking forward to the new stuff. Bro that's fucking wrong, did you ever play a instrument in your life?
I just can't give Tool too much credit for writing a song like this.. If it takes you 10 years of screwing around, doing side projects, and touring as Tool all during those 10 years to pull together an album worth of material, in my opinion, just don't bother. Get in the damn studio or not.. NO BAND should take ten years to write new music unless they break up sometime during recording. Sorry, no props given here. Mike Portnoy gets all the love because he didn't get that decade of headspace.
Another person thinking they are owed something.
@@stephenknox2346 What are you talking about?? No one owes me anything.. Another person thinking things into something another person might say or did say.. People like you are fucking weird.
10 years is a long time to create an album but if you gave me 50 years I highly doubt I could come up with something as intricate as this. Either way, I am excited to see what the new Dream Theater album is gonna sound like now that Portnoy is back! Gonna be sick! Thanks for swinging by!
Promise you it won't take a decade though.. LOL..
@@DecapitatedPlaythings That’s awesome you’ve been entrenched in music so long! And hopefully it won’t take DT too long! 🤘🏻🔥
