Today, we checked back into @DrumeoOfficial with one of my favorite series! It just so happens that @MikePortnoyDT1 was playing along to a Nickelback song he has never heard and he killed it! He also tells the story about he ALMOST filled in for their drummer a few years ago! I love the behind the scenes look at these amazing drummers and can't wait for Mike to be back on the road with @dreamtheaterofficial. Yay. I loved his take on it. Sometimes simple just makes it. Look at ACDC. He added more to it. Im a sucker for great drummers. RIP Neil Peart!

This one is by far the best & most fun Drum session. Portnoy is a helluva drummer

Mangini is phenomenal, but personally I’m not going to miss him in DT. Portnoy seems to have so much more flavor to his style. Mangini came across to me as very technical but so much more robotic and drum machine-esque if that makes any sense. The Mangini albums felt very bland, possibly because the writing wasn’t influenced by MP anymore.
Excited to see the direction they take this next album with Portnoy returning. Mangini was definitely a technical monster!
@@setonhillstudios I'm more curious about what Mike Portnoy will do with Mangini's drum parts on the next tour - obviously, Dream Theater will not throw out 13 years of their creative activity from future set lists.
@@SokolRockGreat point! I would assume he would honor Mangini’s composition as Mangini did his. Gonna be a wild ride!
@@setonhillstudios Actually, Mangini wasn't shy about changing Mike's original drum parts as he wanted, which was one of the reasons why many Dream Theater fans hated Mangini. Search here for "Finally Free Outro - Mangini vs Portnoy" for the most obvious example. By the way, it very clearly reflects the stylistic difference between them. Maybe you should even make a reaction video of it.
Love the reaction! Mike's version is way more interesting than the original in my opinion.

Actually no, he DID NOT almost join Nickleback. He almost played 1 gig as a fill in for Daniel Adair. HUGE difference. As for the double base.. LOVED it. I prefer Mike's version over the original and it isn't even close.

I saw Nickleback in 2008 on the dark horse tour and they tore the roof off the place
I honestly don’t know why they get so much hate! They are a talented band with great riffs and awesome musicians! I think people just chose to make them the brunt of the joke for whatever reason 🤷♂️
Glad Portnoy is back 100%. Mangini is an amazing technical drummer, but Portnoy is DT!

Yeah Jose his tech is cool,Mike was only without him for a few years in the early-mid 2000's when Eric Disrude became the tech before Jose returning
That’s so cool that they have been rolling together for that many years! Mike’s return to DT is gonna be legendary. Can’t wait to see what’s in store! 🤘🏻
@@setonhillstudios Jose makes an appearance in Mike's first drum progressive drum concepts instructional home video in 1996.He is time lapsed setting up Mike's then Mapex Awake era drumkit...sidenote that Mapex kit was sold at a charity auction a few years ago.Someone snagged it for around 16k
