  • Hello Gorgeous,
In this video, I react for the first time to Alice In Chains performing "Love, Hate, Love". In this video, I analyse Layne Staley's amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
This was my first time reacting to an Alice In Chains song and I am so glad I finally did it! Now I totally understand why this band is so highly regarded amongst other rock greats such as Tool or Nirvana!

Raw emotion ... the driving force behind grunge (the Seattle sound). Raw emotion backed by the sureness of Stayley and Cantrell's vocal harmonies. For me, hair or no hair, this more or less sums up how and why AIC has endured and to this day remains so fresh, real, alive.

As an avid decades-long AIC fan, I was SO EXCITED to finally hear someone mention how the lyrics sounded like it was about a narcissist. I read somewhere that Jerry wrote the song from the perspective of a sociopath, and almost all sociopaths are also narcissists. As a survivor of narcissistic abuse I understood deeply--more deeply than I wish I did---the lyrics of this song and they are hauntingly spot-on, as is the music and the whole performance. To me it seems that in addition to his incredible vocal talent, what takes him up to legendary is that his singing is so deeply entwined within his own emotion that he WAS emotion when he sang, every time, and because of that, everyone could feel it, and still feels it today. He and this band have provided a lot of comfort and even saved lives since they created these masterpieces.

This is still my #1 favourite band of all time. Receiving a copy of their sophomore LP changed me forever, both as a music fan and as a person. Thank you for doing this reaction.

I can't believe it! AIC!! You analysed LAYNE like no other, I watched thousands of vocal coaches react to him and you're the most informative hands down, no one dared to mimic him but u went there hell yeah
There are so many layers to his techniques that was so his that ppl till this day have a hard time to replicate
. I love Layne to death and I'm sick and tired of vocal coaches reacting to the AIC MTV Unplugged! Yes it was a classic for us fans but it was defo not his best night for obvious reasons, although he sang beautifully.
There are so many more videos/audios of him doing upbeat live Man in the Box, We Die Young, Would?, Junkhead, Sunshine
What always stands out to me when I watch old live AIC bootleg videos is that more often than not it was recorded with a potato andyet you can still hear him very clearly blasting through the PA and crappy cam. He was an angel.

Could not agree more...I have commented more than once that I hate when reactors talk about how the Unplugged AIC performance is what they love, when all the old AIC fans know that that courageous, bittersweet performance is Layne struggling so hard with his demons, but being there for his band...it's so tough to watch. Give me younger Layne live and if I want later on, I'll listen to the albums...R.I.P. Layne and Mike...we all miss you both so much.

Also, the best cover of any song of theirs I found so far is a rendition of "Man in the Box" by "The Merlins" (Pinhead). Had to remind myself it's a cover (and a dark parody one at that) a few times.

Layne had the chops to be a great singer regardless, but what's sad is that were it not for his struggles and demons, I'm not sure his singing would have been so soulful. Listening to his singing and understanding the lyrics he's singing is like having pure anguish injected into your veins. Hearing songs like Nutshell from their Mtv Unplugged show, knowing he's been fighting heroin addiction, you can hear him lisp in a way he hadn't previously due to addition-related tooth loss and it just hurts you to hear the change from before. Hearing Layne screw up the beginning of Sludge Factory, and seeing Jerry console him and reassure Layne is heartbreaking. Layne in his prime was an absolutely jaw-dropping singer. I still get goosebumps hearing his melismatic runs on songs like this one or Sunshine off of Facelift and Rain When I Die off of Dirt. Alice in Chains' Dirt to this day remains one of a handful of albums I can and do listen to start to finish without disappointment. I don't even know what more to say other than the loss of Layne as well as their bassist, Mike Starr, is tragic and a constant reminder of how beautiful, yet fragile, life is. Thanks for the reaction. It was spot-on and very knowledgeable.

I love your analysis on Layne Staley. He will stand one of the greatest. One thing that I learned from these guys (grunge singers) is that you are not just singing with your heart, is basically your entire muscles and bones thrown into the performance followed by your mind and soul. It is the combination of all those things what makes the voice so beautiful of scary or loud or awesome. Hard to get the words to define the feeling you get from such talented singers. It is fantastic that people is still listening to those voices today, maybe is the right example of how talent endure generations and the past of time. Layne's voice is imprinted in the waveforms of the universe to last forever. Thanks for the effort you make doing your videos. Saludos desde México!

Layne Staley was an amazing musician and singer, his death and his last days...well actually sadly 12-13 months were incredibly saddening to read about, he definitely lived and felt the music he blessed us with, he's one of the many many artists gone too soon and too young I always find myself wondering where/how they'd be if they'd survived to present day and what their music would sound like (If they'd continued to make music, you never know!) RIP Layne Staley, your music was a big part of my infancy and growing up it both gave me comfort and kept me strong. 🤟🤟
I love your reactions because not only do you really keep yourself open to the music and the experience where you really enjoy and feel the music, and THEN on top of that your technical & technique breakdowns are amazingly well explained and then amazingly demoed for us!, Are you in any bands or do you have your own music? Thanks for reviewing this. I love this band and Layne's vocals !! Layne had such an amazing gift of melody and emotion, such a sad loss ! Interesting thought.. I have noticed with a LOT of grunge singers they often go flat (like Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder) - even though I am pretty sure they have a very good sense of pitch.. I have often wondered if it is accepted in the genre because of the tense feeling it gives the listener and feeling you get when it finally resolves. Again, thanks for appreciating this song and singer !!

Speaking from experience and imho, its us showing a lack of caring about a note so you know we're really really bummed in this moment of the song and usually and end of song or lead break.

I love how you demonstrate what people are doing with your voice. Not everyone can do or does that. It is a pleasure as always listening to your reactions! I really connected with Alice and Chains when I was in college many years ago and love how the lead sings. Other songs I would suggest are Down in a Hole, Rooster, Man in a Box. Sending you good vibrations 🤗

Once again you are the best vocal coach on you tube by far imo. You are a gift to the world in more ways than you know. Your analyses' are spot on. Your ability to physically show how these vocalists do what they do while educating us is unmatched. I personally crown you Queen of Vocal Nerds! Lol. Now if I may request some artists that require your expertise.NeObliviscaris : Forget Not,devour Me Colossus or Intra Venus. A progressive melodic death metal band with two vocalist and one plays a mean distorted violin. They are a must for a true rollercoaster ride . Next the mighty Opeth: Ghost of Perdition,Blackwater Park or Harlequin Forest all live at Red Rock amphitheater or Royal Albert Hall. The masters of melodic death metal. And Last but should be First on all Vocal Coaches list is Mike Patton. He has fronted 6 or more bands, solo projects ,voiceovers for movies and video games, etc. His abilities are comparable to Jeff Buckley,Dimash,Freddie Mercury and Alison Krausse. He has compilation vids of him singing in all genres. He is unmatched in ability, agility flexibility and has a 6 octave range. His rabbit hole is infectious to any true vocal nerd. So thanks for blessing us with another great vid. P.S. I and I'm sure many others are anxiously waiting for your next song. You are an amazing vocalist with a wide array of talents that the world needs to experience. Thanks again from South Mississippi.

    YES! A few things:
    1. AiC is my favorite band of all time. Many vocalists have really resonated with me throughout my life, but Layne sits at the top of that list.
    2. You can literally impersonate damn near any vocalist from what I’ve seen! I’ve noticed that since your Jinjer reaction.
    3. PLEASE revisit Lorna Shore with their new song “Pain Remains I: Dancing Like Flames”. I think you’ll love it. It’s very emotional, so prepare yourself.

Alice In Chains rules, you should check out “down in a hole” from their unplugged show because you get to hear Jerry sing in that too and it’s a good example of their legendary harmonizing which they’re known for and was part of their unique sound. AIC rules, Layne one of the best vocalists ever and Jerry one of the best songwriters. Anyway good stuff, always good to see AIC get attention.
