@Jacques Malan, yes. So much emotion in Down in a Hole, as with many others also, but it hits me hard every time I hear it, his singing in this one is incredibly moving ❤❤😎
Beth Roars No complaints from me this time. This is one of the finest examples of how incredibly powerful Layne was, in his prime. It doesn't get much better. You touched upon something that is very true (at least for me), which is that his voice captured the pain that many were feeling. We could relate. I could write an essay on the impact that Alice In Chains have had on me, but will spare you all! RIP Layne Staley. He's missed everyday by many...
@Derek Charette Yep, for sure. I got a lot of flak myself for the comment that she chose the wrong video. I never meant it as an insult to MTV Unplugged because I LOVE that concert! It was incredible, under the circumstances. I just knew that she could find better examples of Layne's vocal range. But also, I realize now that she's not personally choosing the videos, it's suggestions/requests from fans.

@@melbshuffle2003 I'm assuming that "Bellview" is a good area to live... but just because someone grows up outside of a gehtto doesn't mean they had a good life, even extremely rich people can have fucked up lives. Money doesn't negate trauma.
I saw them in 92 opening for Ozzy...SPECTACULAR SHOW...saw them again in 2018...still a spectacular show but I miss Layne...wont give up new AiC but definitely miss Layne...
That's a tough call, I personally prefer Chris Cornell's distortion and range but Layne has more emotional weight behind his singing, also must give honorable mentions to Eddie Vedder and Scott Weiland, both fantastic vocalists.
I think Chris is a better singer in a technical sense, probably the greatest rock singer of all time but Layne just had so much emotion in his voice. You can feel all the pain in every note and that's what makes him my all time favorite vocalist. Chris is a very close second though.
Ummm Layne is one of the best , period ! God rest his twisted soul .. You my dear are absolutely beautiful! On top of that you definitely know your stuff and it makes you even more attractive! Rant concluded , that it all !
Everyone has an idea as to what made him great. Was it drugs? (of course not). Was it training? (Probably not so much). His pain obviously drove the bus but I believe it's just a once in a lifetime talents that is unmatched. Sad ending to a beautiful person!
I really love the way you break down both the technical side and respect the emotional aspects of Lane's vocal style. I ran barricade lines on probably of their shows. They were amazing live. He had his demons and it totally flowed through his vocals. It was painful to see him self-destruct. Grung had a lot of that.
The thing she says at the end about his journey... Layne's singing is amazing, but knowing his background and history makes them pierce into deepest layers of your soul and emotions.
Mike was supposedly the last person to see him, and it ended sadly. Layne said "don't go, not like this" and Mike went. They were fighting about Layne needing to go to the hospital.
Since she tends to stick with live versions, I definitely wouldn't recommend almost anything from Audioslave tours (at least initially, as an introduction/ showcase of his abilities and style) considering how shot his voice was during that period.
@@PereVale Layne can wipe his ass with all grunge singers. He comes from the metal world and you can note the Halford, John Bush, Ozzy influence all over.
@crepez Thank you for noticing that Staley Pharmaceuticals was a reference to AIC; Layne in particular. Now I have "Junkhead" stuck in my brain. A grand song to listen to anyway. 🖤
You have to listen to anything with Chris Cornell to continue your journey into the grunge genre. Chris Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave. His voice just like Layne's is so unmistakably iconic. Love your videos. I click anytime I see a new one come up.
This really opened my eyes (or ears?) to how our psyche's come out in our art whether or not we intend it to. Layne had such power and natural talent but how you described his flat notes and lethargy and almost avoiding accurate pitch absolutely resembled the self-doubt and sabotage of how he lived. So much beauty and skill but ultimately tainted. Still love that man and I miss what he brought to this world.
Centre Demon I knew Layne and you’re 100% correct. Never forgot though that he had an incredible sense of humor as well. He could have easily written observational comedy for Larry David & Jerry Seinfeld. Take care Demon 💜
@@DM-il1hf Thank you for your reply, Chris. I have heard that he had a great sense of humor and that he was a generally kind and caring person as well. You take care as well, friend!
Wading through mud with sharp painful peaks in between is a perfect way of describing his voice, you hit the nail on the head there. He draws his words out in such a distinct, sludgy way, but when he reaches those higher octaves you can feel the emotions he's pouring into them so much. One the reasons Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands. The instruments compliment his way of singing in such an awesome way.
Hey Beth! You, being a vocal coach, not just focussing on “technique” but recognizing the feelings and emotions of songs and artists like AIC/LS, makes me appreciate you and your channel. Layne was a hero to me as a child who had nothing, and he still is the same hero to me as an adult who has everything. (English is not my first language, sorry)
Yeah, at the time, so much great music being created , ya kind of lose perspective of how special it was (is); so much fresh good stuff at once, it takes time & distance to really understand how fortunate we were (are) to have this music
Don't know if you have but I recommend a breakdown of "I stay away" by AiC it's got a much brighter mood but during the bridge it gets super grungy, and then back to uplifting and phenomenal vocals.
I absolutely *adore* Laynes voice. It has such a unique quality and i loved that his sound was what he felt not what others expected he should do, should sound like etc. Exactly how you described it from 12:38
100% agree!! But the live videos of bleed the freak from this gig, have the swearing in the middle censored. Which totally fucks up the the notes he does after the solo!! Shame
He was the best singer, truly. RIP Layne. You listen so well, Beth. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about his vocals. I like learning what his vocals are doing technically. I've always been in awe of his talent and your explanations of him coming up from the flat end of the note and opening up for high notes, etc. are so interesting!
Layne can make me feel things no other artist can. I can’t tell you how many hard times Layne’s music has gotten me through. He lived it, he gets it. If you haven’t done so already, I love to see a reaction to Layne’s other band, Mad Season Wake Up or River of Deceit.
Yes. So many people make AIC all about Layne. TO me Jerry is Alice in Chains. His solo stuff like Bargain basement Howard Hughes is just powerful and angry. Jerry might not be as technical of a singer but as a song writer and guitarist there are few that rival to me.
fan fucking tastic analysis, it was a breath of fresh air to hear the late great Layne Staley spoken about the way I try to describe him, operative work try, truly phenomenal analysis
Amazing choice, Layne is definitely the voice of Grunge for me, more than any others. His power was unique. May I suggest you to check out Mister Mike Patton? Another genius.
You are thinking with your heart to claim Layne for issues and not with your head. In terms of vocal technique, Cornell reached 6-8 octaves and he could climb 4 feet in only one song like Beyond The Weel he was one of the greatest singers in terms of vocal technique, outside that his voice is a factor of the junction of 4 dimensions: range, power, volume and depth. His vocals were so amazing that even women who have an ease in reaching the tones, had difficulty checking out the tribute they did to him. Cornell was blessed by the universe, his voice is one of the most powerful that exists and this is undeniable in terms of talent as a vocalist.
Chris was one of the most amazing song writers in my opinion, I Love sound garden, audioslave, and temple of the dog as well as his solo stuff, but I’ll never think he was a good vocalist 😂
Brilliant heartfelt analysis. Layne was one in a million. His ability to hit the emotional tones that resonate with the feelings you didn't even know you had. You connect with Alice in Chains on a completely different level.
You're still the best "coach" I've seen on RUclips talking about Layne. Thank you. It's always beautiful how you talk about his "dis-ease" of being and how he makes you feel, hand in hand with him on the stage.
It's an amazing song very heartfelt and Powerful lyrics. I was bingeing the Chris Cornell tribute concert on the tube and Miley Cyrus sang say hello to heaven!!? I'm sure you thinking the same thing I was when I clicked on the link thinking wow how bad can this be. But she left nothing but heart and vocal cords on the stage.
His Mom noticed his abilities and got him singing in church, she also sent him to a vocal coach, taught him how to breath, so he never burned his voice like Vedder, Weiland, Cobain etc. notice this rarely happens with English singers, they learn early.
Yeah. I didn't even know they kept playing on after his death, until a couple weeks ago when an acquaintance said they were going to see them live. Have you heard Mad Season, though? Bit different, but still extremely pleasing.
I listen to old and new AiC. They were on hiatus from 96 to 2009. They played a few shows with William but nothing concrete until 2009. Now 3 albums later and they are still as strong MUSICALLY as ever. Definitely a step down vocally because, well, you cant replace Layne....but it's still great music and they still sound like AiC.
Thank you for doing your reactions and input on Alice in Chains and mostly the incredible human being, the late Layne Staley. He was a man with a huge talent yet he seemed to be a humble down to earth man. His voice was so powerful with every song he did. Even on the Unplugged concert he still kicked some serious butt. I would love to have seen where he would go if he was still with us. I wonder if his voice would still be as strong. I hope it would have been. I read somewhere that his voice was so incredibly POWERFUL that if you were super close to the stage where he was you could hear his voice over top of the amps and speakers. What I mean is that you could here his voice coming from his body. I hope I am making sense to this. The speakers are so incredibly loud at concerts so to hear his voice over the speakers must have been earth shattering and one hell of an experience. I wish I had the blessing to be able to see these super talented men do their thing.
I’m so happy a vocal coach finally reviewed an amazing performance by Layne and AIC. Your reaction to his voice the whole video is awesome, yes, he really is that good. 💕RIP LS✨
You forgot Mark Lanegan, nearly anything from his catalog from Screaming Trees and solo work, to Queens of the Stone Age, and collaborations with Isobel Campbell will do.
Junkhead live was insane and awesome. I think it broke my speakers. "Be high, convince him to buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooo".
I'd love to see a reaction to Mark Lanegan, he sang with Layne on a song called 'long gone day', but as he sounds now, 'one way street' would be a good example.

dude he grew up in bellview
@@melbshuffle2003 and?
You don't think the demons that led to his ultimate demise didn't haunt his lyrics and tone?
@@MrMichael51264 you must have forgotten about diamond lie... lol
No, the videos of them are hilarious. He was roommate with a couple guys from Second Coming for years. But the drugs got to him.
@@melbshuffle2003 I'm assuming that "Bellview" is a good area to live... but just because someone grows up outside of a gehtto doesn't mean they had a good life, even extremely rich people can have fucked up lives. Money doesn't negate trauma.
I would love to hear your thoughts on anything Chris Cornell did. Soundgarden, Audioslave or solo, he was an amazing vocalist.
You ever check out Temple of the Dog I see you left that out of your Chris Cornell mentions
Good point. He's done so many colabs...
So much good songs to pick from when his voice goes nuclear. Loud Love, Jesus Christ Pose, Say hello 2 heaven, Slaves and Bulldozers, etc.
Agreed, EPIC is an understatement
Hunger strike, temple of the dog
Beth, have a listen to River of Deceit by Mad Season, which Layne sang on.
Was just about to make the same suggestion. Some of his best work, imo.
ND77 Yes, please!
Chris Cornell's cover of that is on the Patreon request list.
That or Wake Up
@@gollumandeowyn But it's still not Layne's version, even though Chris was very great too.

Yup. Bleed the freak. Probably my fav as well
Christoph same, that song is what got me addicted
I saw them in concert in 1996. They were spectacular! RIP Layne.
Saw them in 1991 as an opener for Megadeth & Slayer, wish I payed more attention - was just waiting for the headliners
I saw them in 92 opening for Ozzy...SPECTACULAR SHOW...saw them again in 2018...still a spectacular show but I miss Layne...wont give up new AiC but definitely miss Layne...
I saw them at the 3rd Lollapalooza. I think it was the 3rd. I was 17 years old. I think it was 93
Even up to his last show he was unbelievable
Layne was the greatest vocalist of the 90's
And one of the best in the history
Chris Cornell might have something to say about rhat
💯💯🔥🔥
Cornel was awesome, Layne was just more awesome
For me there is a technical tie between Cobain and Layne, but Cornell was better than both
"You can't put it in a box." Did you do that on purpose? If so, that was beautiful.
cuz he is the man in the box right?

Layne was one of the best singers of all time, and the best singer of the grunge scene. Glad to see people still enjoying his voice.
That's a tough call, I personally prefer Chris Cornell's distortion and range but Layne has more emotional weight behind his singing, also must give honorable mentions to Eddie Vedder and Scott Weiland, both fantastic vocalists.
@@jasonallen5318 I agree. The sad thing is that of those 4 only 1 is still alive :(
Not better than Chris Cornell
I think Chris is a better singer in a technical sense, probably the greatest rock singer of all time but Layne just had so much emotion in his voice. You can feel all the pain in every note and that's what makes him my all time favorite vocalist. Chris is a very close second though.
Layne Staley's entire career was built around dissonant chords.
That and the heroin...
Well said !
Definitely so !
"Tortured soul" That is what enabled him to bring so much emotion to his songs.
One of his best range songs, review any AIC and I click instantly:) Love your channel and personality!
this performance always gives me the chills. Layne was easily the best singer out of all the grunge bands.
Him and Chris
That`s the proper way to react to Layne - disturbed, in awe and a bit heart broken
David draiman approves this statement.
@@whitelightning2077 it took me a minute and it was one minute too long.
A bit?

I really love the way you break down both the technical side and respect the emotional aspects of Lane's vocal style. I ran barricade lines on probably of their shows. They were amazing live. He had his demons and it totally flowed through his vocals. It was painful to see him self-destruct. Grung had a lot of that.
The thing she says at the end about his journey... Layne's singing is amazing, but knowing his background and history makes them pierce into deepest layers of your soul and emotions.
Not just his life. Bass player's, as well. RIP Layne and Mike
Mike was supposedly the last person to see him, and it ended sadly. Layne said "don't go, not like this" and Mike went. They were fighting about Layne needing to go to the hospital.
Grudge had some of the most amazing vocalist IMO. Listen to Audioslave or Soundgarden. Chris Cornell was amazing.
Wouldn’t call audioslave grunge, but I’d love to see her react to Shadow on The Sun is she does give em a try
Since she tends to stick with live versions, I definitely wouldn't recommend almost anything from Audioslave tours (at least initially, as an introduction/ showcase of his abilities and style) considering how shot his voice was during that period.
Or, State of Love and Trust- Pearl Jam Unplugged!!
I've always felt that a characteristic of grunge is to have amazing vocalists: Layne, Eddie, Chris, Kurt, etc. are amazing!
@@PereVale Layne can wipe his ass with all grunge singers. He comes from the metal world and you can note the Halford, John Bush, Ozzy influence all over.
Thanks for posting this. I've been a lifelong AIC fan and just hearing this again made me emotional. God I miss his talent...
Same here, glad I seen them 5+ times since 1991 and I don't regret any time I saw them.
Same!
He always made my heart flutter. Its so sad he's gone. RIP Layne!
Thank you for doing Love, Hate, Love. Layne will always be my favorite singer. His emotion and raw power were one of a kind. I miss him.
@crepez Well what have you got? I do hope you were quoting Alice In Chains.😉
I click anytime I see a new one come up.
yep
Chris Roeder if only. Man that would've been great. I would watch that. But I think he was very much over Hollywood in every way which is real
This song still gives me goosebumps. Such incredible power!
sang like an angry angel. . . . I hope now he is at peace. - Tom Morello
Layne and AIC one of the best bands from our generation. For anyone that grew up in the 90’s, we were blessed to grow up with these bands
islesfan24 amen!! 🤘🏻
I was only born in '97 but the early 90s feels like my spiritual home. Such incredible music and there's just something very special about that era.
Agreed! I was born in ‘79 so I was teen in the 90’s. The music was simply amazing!
Yeah, at the time, so much great music being created , ya kind of lose perspective of how special it was (is); so much fresh good stuff at once, it takes time & distance to really understand how fortunate we were (are) to have this music
Richard Key thank God we still have it today! I can’t stand today’s music!
Don't know if you have but I recommend a breakdown of "I stay away" by AiC it's got a much brighter mood but during the bridge it gets super grungy, and then back to uplifting and phenomenal vocals.
I agree such a beautiful song. Iiiiiiiiiiii sssssttaaaaaaaayy awwaaaaaeeeeeyyyyy
I absolutely *adore* Laynes voice. It has such a unique quality and i loved that his sound was what he felt not what others expected he should do, should sound like etc. Exactly how you described it from 12:38
You should do Bleed the Freak from this same concert!!

@@stepheng887 I believe it's the actual audio but I'm not sure.

Layne Staley , tortured soul with the haunting voice.

One of the best soulful vocalist ever. Period.
Layne can make me feel things no other artist can. I can’t tell you how many hard times Layne’s music has gotten me through. He lived it, he gets it. If you haven’t done so already, I love to see a reaction to Layne’s other band, Mad Season Wake Up or River of Deceit.
Same here girl!!! You are not alone
The mix of his vocals with Cantrell's grinding riffs - absolutely sublime. Excellent choice 👍
Yes. So many people make AIC all about Layne. TO me Jerry is Alice in Chains. His solo stuff like Bargain basement Howard Hughes is just powerful and angry. Jerry might not be as technical of a singer but as a song writer and guitarist there are few that rival to me.
Still one of the best vocal performances ever can’t tell me nothing
Some people are just born to sing and Layne was one of those people.
Think about how many other vocalist have tried to imulate him!
He was so special. A gift to the world.

Nobody sings like Layne Staley. Hope you listen to more of his work regardless of reacting to it for us. He really was amazing
Maynard and Layne are my two all time favourite vocalists. Thanks for reacting to them!

Layne was a gift to the world of music,he’s part of an elite group of phenomenal singers from this time
His Mom noticed his abilities and got him singing in church, she also sent him to a vocal coach, taught him how to breath, so he never burned his voice like Vedder, Weiland, Cobain etc. notice this rarely happens with English singers, they learn early.
Good mom
Layne was the G.O.A.T.i still listen to old AIC.
Yeah. I didn't even know they kept playing on after his death, until a couple weeks ago when an acquaintance said they were going to see them live. Have you heard Mad Season, though? Bit different, but still extremely pleasing.
I only listen to old AIC
