I'm not a singer or musician. I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if my life depended on it, but I can't imagine life without music. I totally agree the message and the emotion in a song is the most important! Much more so than the "technique", as long as the artist totally commits to whatever technique or style they've chosen to use. And yes Layne's eyes were clearer here. His heroin addiction hadn't taken it's terrible toll yet. Such a shame, such a loss! Such a waste! At least his and the band's art lives on in recordings. They've influenced a lot of artists. It's really nice to see vocal professionals like you and others react honestly to artists outside the supposed mainstream of "proper" vocal technique without judgement regarding their chosen mode of expression. I learn a lot, which increases my enjoyment of multiple musical genres.

I understand. I suffer from a chronic, degenerative neuromuscular disease that has had me in almost nonstop pain for the last 16 years of my life. It has taken away my career, my good looks, my outgoing personality, my friends, my independence, and my freedom to live live as I choose, on my own terms-something I vowed from CHILDHOOD I would never give up.
There I ONE reason I have not extinguished myself: I can still hear, and I can still pick up a guitar and play it with relative competence. (I have lost my ability to sing, however-with a voice that was compared to that of Jim Morrison by everyone from my high school girlfriends to local entertainment journalists.) The point is, while you cannot imagine life without music, I literally only exist because of my love for music. There are other things i appreciate in this vast, extraordinary cosmos, but music is what keeps my heart beating.

When Layne nods and smiles at someone in the crowd in the middle of the song, my heart breaks a little. He seems to be so happy and content being on stage doing what he loves... knowing what's ahead for him, watching him literally high on stage just to perform for the unplugged concert...laying dead in his house for nearly two weeks before anyone even checked on him... everything about it is so sad and pathetic...I miss this Layne so much...

This lineup of Alice In Chains remains my favorite band of all time. A powerful song like this is a prime example of the haunting compositions they could craft during this era. Layne here is definitely so healthy and sharp and strong. This was before the struggle with substance abuse that he ultimately lost. But he was always a real star, even beyond any labels the press gave him or applied to his music. Even when caught up in his dark struggles, he could still shine so brightly.

Bluesy soulful rock.. pretty much anything from Paul Rodgers (Free and Bad Company era), Allman Brothers band (One Way Out, Whipping Post).. and then there's just about anything from Maiden and their huge discography. Very happy to see people continuing to appreciate Alice in Chains and Layne all these years later. There were so many elite singers of the era, so much talent, and they all showcased emotion, vulnerability, and passion in a raw, unfiltered type of way. Even still there was something a bit different about Layne. Cornell and Weiland were maybe were more musical, melodic singers, Cobain and Vedder maybe a bit more dramatic in terms of communicating a range of emotions, but Layne was like a male Banshee, he was like a wailing spirit. Even in Mad Season, without the kinds of production effects they used in Alice in Chains he sounded like how you might imagine a ghost to sound. Love the man, love the band, and love that new people are getting introduced to one of the greatest rock acts to ever do it thanks to channels like this. 🤘✌️

*This is my song.* Totally. Better saying... this is the on and only song I do belong to. Heart and soul, struggles and pain. No song describes better than this does what I've been trough specially in the last 25 years, a half of my entire lifetime. I won't enter into the rabbit hole of the details of what is too much a personal story to share here for a couple of different reasons.
I can only say it perfectly describes how I'm torn apart deep within by that same exact feeling and emptions rollercoaster Layne brings me into every single time I've been listening to this song since I got the album with it. His loss added a further layer of grief to the many layers already present in me which this song describes so well. I had no experience with drugs so I cannot relate on that matter, but certainly I know that painful, lacerating, burying sorrow.
The loss of the woman I loved back then and still love today despite the shattering devastation the breakup from her brought into my life and kicked me in. Layne here painted the perfect picture of that mixed feeling I've been trough, that circular spinning sentiment of love and hate and love with all its darkest colours and shades.
Layne introduced this song as about pain and hell yeah he did perfectly depicted that pain. Whatever ours experiences are, doesn't matter how close or far, how similar r different they are, we all go through that kinda pain at least once in a lifetime.
That's what makes Love Hate Love universal. One of the greatest songs ever written, by the power of the music and the depth of the words, by the power of the words and the depth of the music. All delivered with an astonishing performance that cannot leave a human being indifferent, liking the genre or not. Whoever lived and loved and knows the pain living and loving can do to us and to our lives will relate to that cry of pain Layne Staley has shared with us. Whoever experienced pain, sorrow and went almost through the gate between life and afterlife does belong to this song, like a picture that, like in some tribal and ancestral cultures believed it could, stole our soul.
RIM Layne... Rest In Music as I'm used to saying. Will always be missed, even if I didn't give up listening such an eternal voice!
PS: I have a few words about this video reaction by the way. I can tell I didn't expect the Finnish speaking and when I was finally, and quite soon I'd say... just the time of clicking on subtitles mode, totally at my ease with that then I didn't expect the mix of Finnish and English which added a nuance, a colour I loved in this reaction which I particularly appreciated. You got a new subscriber, Anna, thanks so much for this reaction and analysis which told the other side, the most technical one, of Layne's greatness. I must sound like a fanboy, despite my 50, but I still consider Layne Style's voice one of the greatest ever, seriously among the very best of all times, from a technical and an expressive points of view.

This is the finest performance by Layne I have ever seen. I have watched it hundreds of times and it still blows my mind. Your reaction to this song was the best I have seen so far, from both a technical and an authentic emotional perspective. I am not a singer but have been into music my whole life. I named my cat Layne.

You need to watch this whole show ! I am pretty sure it is on RUclips and it is only 30 minutes long . But You will enjoy every second if you liked this . Thank you for doing this vid . It is a great live performance from a stellar band , And this was when they were just starting to get noticed from the Man in the Box song on MTV .

I really like/ enjoy your reaction and complimentary dialogue, all reactions i have watched are blown away by his vocal strength, etc but i see your "REALNESS" / GENUINE EMOTIONAL REACTION 😊

Layne wrote this song along with Man in The Box.
Another song though Layne didn't write it is the Live At the Moore version of Bleed the Freak. Sonically he does things, makes sounds that are ethereal. I recommend that one next.
Then anything else from Live At The Moore.

I love your reactions and your analysis. You’re always on point and you pay attention to every detail. You can tell that you really enjoy each song and your understanding of their techniques is amazing!
Alice In Chains is my favorite band ever. They really get you in the feels and they’re a very emotional band. Anyway, i really suggest you do Bleed the Freak live from the same show. It’s an awesome performance and really showcases some more of his haunting vocals and range.

Your reaction with those facial expressions and the glee in your eyes is mesmerizing. I saw Nirvana, I saw Soundgarden and I have seen Pearl Jam but my biggest concert regret from the 90’s is not seeing Alice In Chains.

It feels like he is almost crying at 8.22.
As if returning to his infant state being denied love.
Am very impressed with this song. Nutshell is another favourite but dont enjoy listening to his mtv unplugged songs as they're depressing for me even if they reflect honesty.
    Great thoughtful comments, thank you.

Im a big hockey fan and cheer for the Avalanche which have several Finnish players. I love the sound of the Finnish language. There are lots of really good Alice in Chains songs out there but ill recommend listening to another song off Facelift album (which is where "Love Hate Love" comes from). Its called "I know Somethin (bout you)" and its extremely funky and so good

I have always found your channel fascinating. Your switching of language is really interesting choice which in some ways I am more engaged with paying attention due to subtitles. Your insights and analysis make it quite worth the effort! So often we kind of default into English to be heard on a platform like this, but I often wonder what is lost in terms of filtering ones thoughts into a second language in the moment. Great band, great song, and great performance. Earlier Layne you got to see more of the real guy before addiction took it's toll. By the time of doing the Unplugged performance a lot of his enthusiasm and vocal sound was lost. I saw them live twice, once in '93 and once around like '96 at one of their last shows he was not the same person.
