"Down in a hole" tugged my heart back in the 90s and still to this day!!! RIP LAYNE STALEY/MIKE STARR...AIC BELONGS IN ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME PERIOD!!!!!!
Layne Staley (lead vocals) was the original singer of Alice in Chains. This was from their 1990 debut album 'Facelift'... The band's trademark was the vocal harmonies of Layne Staley's bluesy vocals and guitarist Jerry Cantrell's subtle vocals. Their sound was very unique for that time - a cross between early Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd w/ Beatles-style vocal harmonies. However, Layne Staley struggled w/ he+++n addiction and passed away in 2002 from an OD... Alice in Chains' biggest hits were w/ Layne on vocals... The band reunited w/ new vocalist William DuVall in 2006 and has released new albums since. The original Alice in Chains was formed in the 80's by Jerry Cantrell (guitar/ vocals), Layne Staley (lead vocals), Sean Kinney (drums) and Mike Starr (bass)... Signed in 1990, they released their debut album 'Facelift' and it sold gold by 1991 w/ the success of the single 'Man in the box'... Cantrell wrote the song about censorship by the music industry - how the record label kept trying to put the band 'in a box' in order to market and sell them as a commodity... AIC released an acoustic EP 'Sap' in 1991 showcasing the band's mellow side. 2nd full album 'Dirt' became a huge hit in 1992... the album came in w/ the Seattle grunge rock scene breaking big and it sold over 4x platinum... w/ the singles - 'Would?' ... 'Them bones' ... 'Rooster' ... 'Angry chair' ... 'Down in a hole'... The album had a lot of lyrics about the dark world of he+++n addiction, which Layne Staley and Mike Starr were struggling with. In 1993, AIC fired Mike Starr (Sadly, he passed away in 2011 from a prescription OD) ... Mike Inez (bass) replaced him and AIC released the semi-acoustic EP 'Jar of flies' in 1994, which charted at #1. Unfortunately, Layne Staley's struggles put Alice in Chains' touring on hold by '94... Layne recorded the album 'Above' under the band name Mad Season in 1995...That same year, Alice in Chains released their self-titled album which also charted at #1 but no tour was planned. Alice in Chains did a stellar MTV 'Unplugged' performance in '96 and played 4 shows that Summer opening for the band Kiss... Those were the last shows Layne Staley played... Layne survived an OD after the last show and Alice In Chains went on hiatus. That year, his longtime girlfriend Demri passed away and Layne lost all hope. In 1998, Layne agreed to record 2 new songs for an Alice in Chains boxed set ('Music Bank') - 2 truly dark songs were completed: 'Get born again' and 'Died'... released in 1999. Jerry Cantrell released solo records ('Boggy Depot' in 1998... 'Degradation trip' in 2002) After Layne Staley's death in 2002, Alice in Chains (Cantrell/ Kinney and Mike Inez) reunited to tour in 2006 w/ William DuVall on vocals... They have released 3 albums since - 'Black gives way to blue' (2009)... 'The devil put dinosaurs here' (2013) and 'Rainier Fog' (2018) Some of the newer AIC songs - "Check my brain" ... 'A looking in view' ... 'Hollow'... 'Your decision' Jerry Cantrell released another solo album 'Brighten' in 2021.
Layne Staley was not of this earth. I don’t know if he was an angel, an alien, or a piece of glitter floating around in the universe. I do know whatever it was, it was fucking beautiful.
@@danielkinn782 All great songs ... BTW I already mentioned 'Nutshell". They don't have a bad song, but the 3 I mentioned demonstrate the variety in their music catalog. You get a wide spectrum with those 3.
Loads of people have already said it but love hate love live at the moore is epic. That whole set is to be honest. Rooster is one of my favourite videos and anything from mtv unplugged is incredible. If you are moved by his voice then you need to listen to down in a hole or nutshell from mtv unplugged or Mad Season Wake up live at the moore will give you chills. Layne Staley (RIP) was a once in a lifetime talent and Jerry Cantrell is a once in a lifetime musical genius. Inez, Starr, and Kinney are (were RIP Mike Starr) the best of the best, too. Ann Wilson from Heart said you could feel the stage vibrate from the power of Layne's voice. Man in the Box is the song that ushered us from the age of glam rock/hair metal into the age of grunge/alternative rock.
Welcome to the all consuming Alice In Chains rabbit hole lol Layne and Jerry's power/chemistry is unmatched and the whole band is very talented. You hit the nail on the head at the end about them being a band that lays it all out there. Very vulnerable and honest band, Layne wore his heart on his sleeve with his lyric writing. As many say: You don't listen to AIC, you feel AIC. They are extremely diverse and they do not have a bad song. Just some are better than others and some take time to grow on you.
This song along with "would?" and "down in a hole" are probably their 3 biggest hits and they're all different types of masterpieces.. "Love, hate, love" live at the Moore is a must see/hear to truly experience the power of Layne's voice and the bands skills.. Love your reaction.. great choice to break the AIC ice..
My son who is 21 was home this summer from college, we were coming home from dinner and I played some AIC songs and he was blown away how good they are. He now listens to them on his pods while working out.
All of AIC songs, live at the Moore, and the MTV unplugged shows are must watches. Though you need to watch the official video of Rooster for the story. Another must watch is Layne's side project Mad Season, live at the Moore.
The song man in the box came out nearly 35 years ago and got it hook in me out of the gate. I haven’t tired of it yet. it’s been a while since I’ve heard this and it took me back. It seemed like something was happening in music and it was just awesome between Alice In Chains Soundgarden Pearl Jam. ,and Nirvana all these artist kind of knew each other and collaborated on different projects together. I was 21 at the time now I’m 55 and it doesn’t seem that long ago. I believe time really is an illusion thank you Alan Watts.
Great reaction, it’s great seeing people experience amazing music for the first time. This was the song that got me into grunge back in the day. I was 13 and them, Candlebox, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam really defined my high school days. Smashing Pumpkins, REM and Stone Temple Pilots were also favorites though they were more on the alternative side of things.
Your reaction is the same we ALL had when we first heard them on the radio. I was a New Waver/Goth kid, but when I heard Layne I was BLOWN AWAY. To me, they are NOT grunge. Alice In Chains is SINGULAR. They are their own genre - they were that good. 🖤
You have so many Alice In Chains tracks to get into... Rooster, Would, Down in a Hole, Nutshell... Layne Staley is part of my golden triad of Grunge vocalists, the others being Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audio Slave) and Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver). Check em out.
Hello Stacey, nice reaction. You got to react to is side project Mad Season 'River of deceit' . One of the best voices in grunge, R.I.P. Layne Staley .
It was a great band, very heavy and very genuine players. They knew their business. I listened to them when they first came out but found no one else who liked them. My girlfriend really freaked out when I played it for her, she felt genuinely threatened by it. It's not casual listening for around the house, it's dark and oppressive but powerful and addictive too. It's what I might call 'depression music', there's a distinct hellish undertone within all of their music (and not just lyrics, but deep 'vibe'). That undertone cuts through all culture, all society, all religion, all politics, all popularity - cuts it open and exposes the rot in its core. There's no taking prisoners, all their songs are merciless to your soul. This one was one of my favorite songs of theirs. I recommend you react to "Rooster". It was a 'hit' song in a way, it was even used in one of the "Terminator" movies (#3, if iirc) so you may recognize parts of it (prior to the Ai motorbike chase scene). Alice is a band I listen to rarely, but would never want to lose. I wouldn't call it "Grunge" at all though as it's far more sophisticated than that, it has real depth and moodiness which can stay with you well after you hear it (as you say, like Pink Floyd does). It does not appeal to our higher thoughts, it deals with the darkest most war-like brutal and completely thoughtless inner nature. The guitar sounds and players are fantastic too, they have an authentic deep rhythm that's their own, their own slice on the beat, and it's so clever, so well layered too. Somehow these guys had the loudest guitars that have ever been recorded, and that comes through because these players and album producers really knew how to set the sound up. Every chord goes off like a stick of dynamite. "And We Die Young" is another incredibly powerful song you could do a reaction video to. You'll absolutely love it, as it's just as soul-tearing as this one was. That's the nature of Alice In Chains, it confronts you with that unthinking wolf-like animal mentality that can be expressed from inside us, like a deep survival instinct, which comes to the surface automatically, maybe once in our lifetime, and will do anything to survive if it needs to, and it will not be asking for permission, nor apologizing for all those decomposing bodies. I'm glad you were able to appreciate where that band went, to make music like that, as that's what they're expressing in words and instruments.
I'll never forget seeing them in concert with Queensryche, Layne had broken his leg and performed the concert in a wheelchair. It was an amazing concert, I'll never forget that night!

"Down in a hole" tugged my heart back in the 90s and still to this day!!! RIP LAYNE STALEY/MIKE STARR...AIC BELONGS IN ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME PERIOD!!!!!!
The Greatest voice EVER from Seattle!🙏❤️😭
The "Feed my eyes" right after the solo will never fail to give me goosebumps
'Degradation trip' in 2002)
After Layne Staley's death in 2002, Alice in Chains (Cantrell/ Kinney and Mike Inez) reunited to tour in 2006 w/ William DuVall on vocals... They have released 3 albums since - 'Black gives way to blue' (2009)... 'The devil put dinosaurs here' (2013) and 'Rainier Fog' (2018)
Some of the newer AIC songs - "Check my brain" ... 'A looking in view' ... 'Hollow'... 'Your decision'
Jerry Cantrell released another solo album 'Brighten' in 2021.
Layne Staley was not of this earth. I don’t know if he was an angel, an alien, or a piece of glitter floating around in the universe. I do know whatever it was, it was fucking beautiful.
Layne's voice was 100% feeling, and you feel it in his songs.
And THAT is why it was called GRUNGE.
Jerry Cantrell is LEGEND. Still today.
Layne's library always reflects his tortured soul. The man suffered manic depression and addiction which eventually ended his life way too early.
The songs "Again" and "Would?" are a must. Also, "Nutshell" is worth a listen.
All AIC songs lol.
@@danielkinn782 Yes, but those 3 in particular. These 3 are excellent introductions.
@@kelleychilton2524 Nutshell, Rooster and Love Hate Love....😉
@@danielkinn782 All great songs ... BTW I already mentioned 'Nutshell". They don't have a bad song, but the 3 I mentioned demonstrate the variety in their music catalog. You get a wide spectrum with those 3.
@kelleychilton2524 that's awesome. Yeah I think AIC is amazing. Every song off every album is just so damn good!
Especially if you know what happened to him x
I am very impressed by your musical taste
4:39 The music video is the radio friendly version. The words 'pit' and 'spit' replace another word on the album.
Such a great groove, as always love your insite xoxo
RIP Layne. His voice goes straight through your soul. The unplugged versions of nutshell, down in a hole and would also deserve a reaction!
This song has given me goosebumps every time I’ve heard it since 1990 when the album first dropped.
Love hate love live at the moor really paints a picture of his vocal prowess. Absolutely mind blowing. And that's an understatement.
My favorite band from the 90s grunge.
Aw man, packed house ear-busting shows at The Crocodile Cafe in the Seattle that was. Good times.
It was an incredible era to live through! You are going to be overwhelmed, they have so much great music. Enjoyed your reaction.
oh, just wait until you hear their acoustic songs lol one of the best grunge bands seattle gave us
Thanks for reacting to this song! More AIC would be great. Pantera Domination Live reaction would be RUclips gold!
You have to try Rooster from these guys, it hits home on me being a vet.
the best singer to ever do it imo. there's no one else to sound like him and Jerry together. Such a talent. I ended up naming my son after Layne.
He had one hell of a voice…🥺
All of AIC songs, live at the Moore, and the MTV unplugged shows are must watches. Though you need to watch the official video of Rooster for the story. Another must watch is Layne's side project Mad Season, live at the Moore.
Layne sang with so much emotion, you could feel it. Dirt is another one that hits deep.
RIP Layne Staley.
awesome reaction video thank you
The song man in the box came out nearly 35 years ago and got it hook in me out of the gate.
Please watch their MTV Unplugged version of "Down in a hole" and "Nutshell" sometime.
So sad that Layne is gone. 😢 You’ll love “Love, Hate, Love.” @The Moore
'Love, Hate, Love' (Live at the Moore 1991), and the studio cuts of 'Rooster' and 'Am I Inside' are essential.
