Okay Stacy, a history lesson from a guy who was there, sort of. The Monsters of Rock concert was a free concert put on by the Russian government. It was held at the Tushino Airfield in Moscow, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. They estimated 1.6 million attendees. Being American I was not allowed to go but I was in the US Embassy about 3 miles away. If you look at the crowds those structures you see are actually speaker towers. The concert was so loud that inside the Embassy we still measured the sounds at an average of 96db. According to an official memo received by the Embassy in following days, there were 54 deaths attributed to the concert and the following day over 126k people were treated for hearing loss. And those helicopters you referenced had a dual purpose, one was to move the air around in the crowd and also be on standby in case an emergency rescue was needed. Also, the Russian military was doing security. Any other questions that I can answer, just let me know. 😁👍

I am surprised that only 126K people had hearing loss. I'm willing to bet they were all those people I the front and anyone in the vicinity of those speakers you spoke of. Metallica is not a concert, it is an experience. They give 1000% every show. They did an opening gig on an Ozzy tour back in the 80s. It was the last time this band was not at least a co-headliner. I've been lucky enough to have seen 8 Metallica shows since the 80s. I've never been disappointed.
If you get the opportunity to see them, I strongly recommend going. You will not regret it.

But it’s significant because they were on the monsters of rock tour in Europe while the black Album was blowing up at home. They didn’t have radios that went outside of the Soviet union. Had just been allowed on radios from outside of Russia for less than a year, the people were hungry for anything that they never experienced. They were dying for freedom. Monsters of Rock 1991 on the 28th Sept at Tushino Airfield Moscow - the line up was AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera, The Black Crowes and a Russian metal band E.S.T. The, then collapsing Soviet rule allowed the tour and the event was basically free, the attendance is not really known, but legend says it was 1.6 million. It was almost certainly over 1 million. As you can see, security was literally a division of Soviet troops, many of whom joined the crowd.
Something to think about; most of the attendees were likely in their teens and early 20s (at that time, I myself was 18 then I'm now in my 50's). Now it is 33 years later and I wonder how many of those young people are still alive today, I wonder how many (if any) are now important or powerful people in Russia, how many may be politicians or military commanders in Russia or Ukraine. An exceptional moment in time and history. It is tragic to see what has become of the nation(s) that welcomed that amazing tour.

The Monsters of Rock festival in Moscow back in 1991 was an epic moment in rock history! Held at the Tushino Airfield, it featured live performances by legendary bands like AC/DC, Metallica, The Black Crowes, Pantera and E.S.T.. But what made it truly remarkable was the context: it took place just a month after the failed August Putsch, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Imagine this: 1.6 million rock and metal fans converged in Moscow for the first ever open-air rock concert. And guess what? The concert was completely free, which drew even more people to the event. The helicopters were there to manage the excitable rock fans, and even military personnel shed their uniforms to headbang along! there are some reports that the helicopters were flying over the crowd to cool them down.. don't know if that's true or not. This wasn’t just a concert; it was a cultural invasion, a Western rock armada landing on Soviet soil. I think the local mayor said that he thought only about 300 people would turn up.. don't underestimate loyal Rock and Metal fans lol. If you love this then you MUST check out Metallica live in Seattle 1989 this whole concert is legendry with us Metallica fans. They were just Brutal at this show.. my all time top Metallica concert.. been into them for over 35 years.. you are gonna enjoy this rabbit hole.

Ok, two things that might not have been said yet, but I don't have the time to read 2K+ comments :
That concert, The Monsters of Rock Tour, was NOT only Metallica, they were not even the headliners ... BUT !
It is still, to this day, in the Guiness' Books of Record as the live performance with the largest live, direct crowd ever.
ONE concert had about 2 BILLIONS spectators, but NOT live and on site.
Metallica still holds a second World's Guinness'' Record from that year : they are the ONLY band that had a major concert on ALL continents in a single tour in a single year (YES, they held a concert in Antartica, for the people of the research station there and the penguins).
That particular concert lasted all day and most of the night, and it really changed the life of the whole planet.

not entirely true... Iron Maiden went on a full fledged tour through Eastern Europe in the mid-80's, and they were not toned down concerts. Also, 2 years before this one was the Moscow Music Peace Fest, which, while not having as many people because it was in a stadium so "only" 100,000 people could attend, was more significant because it was before communism was falling in Eastern Europe and all, it was the first really big rock fest behind the Iron Curtain (Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Scorpions and Cinderella played)

The helicopters weren't there for security but to fan fresh air into the crowd. 1.6 million by one estimate. This was one of the first concerts to play to the people of the soon to be disbanded Soviet Union. Although there are a lot of theories out there, I firmly believe that it was rock music that toppled the Soviet Union. From the first bands (Cliff Richard, Uriah Heap, Nitty Gritty Dirt band, etc) to play within the Iron Curtain came a crack in the oppression of the Soviet system. This concert proved that the Communists could no longer control the young people who ended up gathering the courage to bring down their sacred Soviet Union. In short, rock music accomplished what almost 50 years of anti-communist rhetoric failed to do. Topple the Berlin Wall! Damn, we good! Loved your reaction to this, Stacey. You always bring a fresh, intelligent take on the music that I've loved for over 60 years. Blessings!

This concert was guarded by 11 thousand people: police, riot police, internal troops, rifle divisions of the Soviet Army. When the first bottles fell on their heads and two soldiers were taken away by an ambulance, angry law enforcement officers began to rush at anyone they did not like, beating people with their hands, feet and clubs. The space in front of the stage literally turned into a bloody battle that did not stop from the very beginning of the concert until midnight.

For a little context, the concert was in Moscow, the capital of Russia in 1991. The US and Russia had been "fighting" the Cold War for the past 30/40 years, threatening nuclear armageddon against one another for decades before this. Russia (the Soviet Union) was ruled by dictators, was secretive, didn't open up to the world and very much didn't like the US, but it collapsed around this time, the countries that they swallowed up began becoming independent again.
All those people (1.6 million or more) had been held captive by their cruel and insane government for years, a lot of them for the entire lives. Metallica, an American metal group, playing in your capital is not only a celebration, but a show of peace and unity. That's mostly why the crowd is so big.

I was lucky enough to see them at Donington Monsters of Rock in 95 as a young 18 year old. The two and a half hour set they did was amazing (if a little spoiled by 2x4s introduction to their fans)

This was the end of the Iron Curtain era. To celebrate freedom one of the things was this free concert.
It was held at Tushino Airfield in Moscow. By noon, 300 000 festival attendees had entered the area.
When Pantera played there were 700 000 in the audience.
As the festival went on the number grew to a million.
Metallica reached 1,6 million. Closing act was AC/DC.
Heard different rumours (cannot confirm this) about how many people in the crowd got injuried due to
violent clashes between the public, the police and even military. To oversee the event,
there were 11 000 soldiers, police officers, hired security guards and riot police.
Very tragic whatever the amount was. This is what was said according to the journalist report.

      @RoverWaters 18 дней назад

      LOL
your logic is lacking, AC/DC was the main act, so the top number of people was at night.
no source ever reported 1.6 mil at the Metallica opening show.

    • @RoverWaters

you just invented those numbers or quoted someone who did.
Reality is: NOBODY counted or estimated IN PERIOD the audience at Metallica show.

i realized awhile ago that great songs have something in common.. they're all created from a perfect storm... the perfect voice, lyrics, melody and hook.. often great bands rise to the top because they had a mix of great people.. a great voice.. a great guitar player.. a great drummer... metallica rose to the top for a reason... there one hit wonders because it's hard to find good hooks and voices that work with many songs.. one of the best songs ever i think is Passenger's let her go.. almost 4 billion views.. the voice is so unique but it only fit that one perfect song it seems.. while other voices like ac/dc thunderstruck and back in black .. and guns n' roses axl's voice is just insanely good.. so many great bands.. creedance cclearwater revival looking out my backdoor.. iko iko.. don't worry be happy.. so many unique voices and catchy songs.. of course some don't have super unique voices but they're still identifiable like eminem.. but metallica.. was just perfect .. and they made so many perfect storms.. i wish you would of watched more of them.. there's so many.. but gnr is such a close second to them.. almost equal really.. but there was many more like bon jovi and skid row and def leppard.. so so many.. and lots studied music.. had some of highest rated guitarists like slash and richie sambora... it's not like they just got lucky.. maybe to find each other sure.. but they rose from thousands and thousands of bar bands around the world.. because they were the perfect storms.. the beatles michael jackson .. you name it... they had the hooks.. the catchy lyrics and voices.. maybe if more realize this they'll find their perfect storm.. even one is enough

James Hetfield himself (who is not familiar, that is, original member and lead singer… so that is from 1981 to now. 43 years! And still going strong!!!) . So James himself in an interview, that that was the scariest concert and show of his his life. Just look at this massive crowd of soldiers, just trying to keep the audience out of the band… I’m still amazed! And btw, there were casualties, and unfortunately a few deaths 😔🥺💕❤️ but what would you expect at that kind of show?! 1.7 million ppl, really. Ok some comments said it was a massive overestimate and there were like 500,000. Which is still fucking A LOT. Back in my days, in my 20s, I’ve been to hell of a lot of festivals, and concerts ☺️😂❤️ from mid of Russia (Siberia Nizhiy Novgorod, and btw, Novgorod was original capital of Russia, like couple of thousand years before Moscow and my home city, St.Petersburg, the most beautiful city in the world. It's the "Monsters of Rock" in Tushino Airbase / Moscow (28.09.1991) with an estimated 1.6 - 2 million visitors all in all, only topped by Jean-Michel Jarre in 1997, where he played before an astonishing crowd of 3.5 million people, at the red sqare, also in Moscow.

Proof that music can change the world. The Monsters of Rock showed up in Moscow to show Soviets what they were missing. A few years later, Ronald Reagan was saying "Tear Down This Wall" in Berlin, and the Soviet Union and Iron Curtain were no more. This band has such a masculine sound, but the lyrics are about tucking your son into bed. For another great live performance, check out "Whiskey in the Jar" from Dublin - maybe the oldest song (in centuries!) you'll ever react to!

Monsters of Rock Moscow 1991 - a series of rock and heavy metal concerts.
You've got to understand, The Cold War was basically over. The Soviet Union was dissolved about 4 months after this concert. It was held on a military airbase (nothing else could handle the crowds), and attendance was free. This was more or less the first taste of "The Decadent West" all those people got without the risk of ending up in jail (at best).

1991.Most people were tired of "The Cold War". Hope grew around the World.. perhaps could youth in Russia and former Soviet Union(USSR) go forward into the future alongside western Countries?..starting with this Free Concert with several Rock Bands from the West! I remember watching Metallica in Concert the following year (1992)..Man how time flew away and the World has changed...Cellphones, Internet , AI was still a dream/nightmare..3 years later the Movie Termintor 2 was released and the World was heading into a new Era for sure .. but for the better??..well, we will see... / Peace to everyone!!

  • @mfree80286
    @mfree80286 12 дней назад

The low down on the crowd numbers boils down to this; 500,000 tickets were issued. So many people started showing up without tickets that the organizers basically gave up and let them in. Anything above 500,000 is a best guess, they also weren't all there at exactly the same time so 1.6mil is the total attendance estimate. You're probably still looking at about 700-800,000 people there, remember this is the tarmac of an airport so it's absolutely massive too.

Stacey, as amazed as you are, imagine being a cold war soldier who was trained to see "the Russians" as enemies. Then to see this and how music brings everyone together. It's magical. The discussion of the Russian invasion is a whole different topic and this video is still captivating to my old soldier's eyes.

But remember, the intro is not from Metallica. It's 'The Ecstasy Of Gold' from Ennio Morricone and it's the soundtrack to the movie "Il buono, il brutto e il cattivo" , an italian western from 1966, directed by Sergio Leone and played by a young Clint Eastwood🤟

Having grown up with Metallica in my teens, I’ve seen them in concert 11 times. Watching this intro still brings tears to my eyes. Not hundreds and thousands, that crowd is hundreds of thousands!! Metallica and now also 5FDP are staples still in all of my playlists!! They’re a Bay Area (San Francisco) group of guys. I lived in N. CA most of my life. I always loved the stories of them going into small Bay Area bars for the night, fill it up, lock the doors and play. I was never lucky enough but a buddy of mine was. My biggest regret was not having YT at the time of this event. When the first VHS tapes started to come out I couldn’t wait for it to be on tape lmao

Metallica is a world renowned metal band and often stands in the top 3 of best metal band, album, song list. Excited that you are beginning this journey. You will find biblical songs, anti-war songs, deep thought songs. The solos will make you want more and the way the design their music is incredible. Not all albumbs are perfect by any means, but they definitely have a stronghold on metal and musical influence. Ive seen them live many times and to this day, no one tops them in my opinion.

There was a joke made at one point
Nazi Germany sent millions to conquer the Russian's in WWII, and failed. The American's sent 8, and succeeded! The significance of this show makes it so much better. It was an add-on show for the tour already in progress.
Metallica in the late '80s & early '90s dominated the globe.
If you continue down this Metallica journey, and I do hope you do there is almost a "required" listening list.
    Creeping Death (Live in Moscow"
    Battery (Seattle '89)
The Thing That Should Not Be (Seattle '89)
    No Leaf Clover (S&M)
    Fade to Black
    Damage Inc.,
    Orion
I've been a fan since I was a kid. 30+ years later, and I still am. They are the master of change up.
I've seen them 11 times on two continents. Every single show was insane.
