There’s no backing vocal tracks on this performance. What you’re hearing is a well placed delay by the sound man. These bands from the 70s and 80s used delays on vocals to a perfection.

A delay rack unit with a hold button. I had a relatively cheap one back in the 80's with the same feature. I'm sure their equipment was top of the line, for the period. Maybe a Lexicon.

@@barryhall5125 Could it be that this is an analog recording and when its downloaded the video and audio may not be synched up throughout the video. I've noticed it on a few videos he's reviewed.

@@kurtwilhite2960 I think you're right about the syncing issue being Sebs production. Probably easier to get quality audio to us watching if it's separate audio piped directly to his video production. And he doesn't know it's an issue or doesn't care to time it right. Very disconcerting, detracts from the enjoyment 😟

    • @jeffwarren4938

And the video isn't always synced with the mixed sound. You can see it several times on this set...especially when the switch camera views...happens a couple times..live performance is studio mixed, and has to be synced to video.

Rik is a virtuoso guitarist and vocalist...every album also had a fantastic acoustic number...Rik wrote for Guitar Player magazine, and is a MONSTER guitar player and vocalist. Their whole US Festival performance was epic. I have been a fan since '77...they were huge at our high school in southwest Indiana....saw them four times..first time in '78. Rik is mind blowing...as good live. Strve Perry once asked how he hit those high notes so effortlessly when Triumph opened for Journey at the Rose Bowl. Virtuoso voice and guitarist...his acoustic duets with Steve Morse are mind blowing. Pretty much quit rock and became a jazz guitarist.

The Gasworks, The Generator, Mad Mechanic, and a bunch more of that era all created by one owner, hence the industrial theme names. Also in that group was a small place called The ???? Cellar which was below ground level. I saw A Foot In Cold Water there but back then they'd be on the high school circuit too. Great period in T.O.'s music scene.

Since you were asking if there was a backing vocal track -- there wasn't, but on the first song the video & audio were way out of sync. For the second song the video & audio were also out of sync, but also it wasn't a live recording like you suggested. It was a live video with the studio recording. Also a lot of the second song was missing -- the entire intro and a slow break in the middle. "Hold On" was a very layered song on the studio recording, which meant they had to play it differently live. I saw them several times live including being there for the first song at the US Festival, and they really were all that. They never really got their due in the US (partly because US marketers didn't know how to handle two Canadian power trios being in existence at the same time, and Rush got most of the attention), which made them underappreciated back then and more obscure today. Go down the Rabbit hole with them and you will be very pleasantly surprised. BTW, Rik Emmett stayed active until pretty recently, converting his show to acoustic and gigging with one other guitarist (Dave Dunlop). Was able to see that show in 2017 or so when they swung through California. Last comment -- I'm also a guitarist, and Emmett is a huge influence. Check out some of his acoustic solo pieces like Midsummer's Daydream.

Best concert of my life. 1983 US Festival in Devore California Sunday, May 29 a week after my 17th birthday. Best weekend of my life. Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions and Van Halen finished the show. There was over 350,000 metalhead on this day rocking out in the desert. Day one was new wave music and day three was basically classic rock. Neither of those days came close to the amount of people as this day. I was lucky enough to be under one of those water cannons which basically save my ass because it was hot as hell. Triumph was by far the best band that day, followed by the Scorpions and Judas Priest. I’ve been to hundreds of shows in my life, clubs, areas and giant festivals, this show by far was the best. It was definitely the biggest party I’ve ever been to.

You likely haven't heard of Triumph because they wouldn't sell out like many bands did. These guys love music! Look up Rik Emmett's later work too. He plays a variety of music. Even though he is older, his voice is still top notch. I liked Triumph for the inspirational lyrics and Rik Emmett's voice/guitar playing. I got to see them in concert in Omaha in 1983, Van Halen in 1980. Concerts were cheap back then and there was no autotune. It was all the real deal. If I could only go back, I never got to see Rush in concert. I'm biased because I think the best music came in the 70's and 80's.

I grew up listening to Triumph. Watched them on MTV. Had to drive to Canada to get their true first album because it wasn’t available in the US. I truly dislike crowds but saw them in concert 5 times - worth every second. Gil Moore - best drum kit ever and he knows how to use it. I follow Rik Emmett to this day, a true master. If you haven’t listened to their albums you’re missing out. Seriously.

The concert that "Lay it on the Line" was recorded at was the Us Festival '83. Sunday, May 29, 1983. I was there, just about a month before my 16th birthday, right up front. And it was hot as hell, and nobody cared.
That particular day (it was a 3 day music festival) was dedicated to Heavy Metal/Hard Rock. The line-up was, in the order that they performed was:
    Quiet Riot
    Motley Crue
    Ozzt Osborne
    Judas Priest
    Triumph
    Scorpions
    and the Mighty Van Halen!!!!!
Truly, one of the best Music Festival/Concert experiences ever.

I love your reaction. I've been listening to RIk Emmett for 4 decades. He was with Triumph in the late 70s / 80s and went solo in the 90's through 2010s. HIs songs are inspiring. Life is hard at times, his music inspires me. He is a great song writer (and as you pointed out) a great singer and guitarist. Thanks for this. You are right about reaction videos. It takes me back to when the albums came out and I'd hear the songs for the first time. And, I had similar reactions. Seeing your responses triggers those memories. Thank you.

I saw Triumph live many, many times... truly an epic experience! Classic rock is pure nostalgia for me now, and I listen to mostly contemporary stuff these days, but Triumph opening for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens is still one the highlights of the hundreds of shows in many countries that I've seen. Appreciate the knowledge and understanding you bring to this, Sebs!

Some of those high notes where sung by the drummer, Gil Moore. He co-wrote and contributed lead vocals to a number of Triumph songs and also performed that function live. Saw them in the late 70's, another concert that left me awestruck. Rick's guitar playing was world class. Check out "Rock N Roll Machine"

Another AMAZING trio from CANADA Triumph and Rush have some of the most TALENTED and SPECTACULAR MUSICIANS PERIOD!!!!!. And both bands are even better LIVE than on the album. It's just crazy. The drummer of Triumph is also an AMAZING vocalist in his own right, so the backing vocals are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. He also does some songs as the lead vocalist and Rik Emmett does the backing vocals. Doesn't matter who sings, IT'S ALWAYS GREAT
