I agree, though it has to be said that this group of musicians as a whole were exceptional. They hit the ground running and just kept accelerating. Operation Mindcrime is still one of my favourite albums of all time.
Geoff's replacement Todd La Torre is also a Baritone. Both are exceptional singers with ridiculous upper extension. Even someone like Michael Kiske from Helloween is also a Baritone and he can still break glass. Singers like Geoff, Todd and Michael are pure gifts!

This was not live. The video, yes, but the audio was clearly reworked in the studio. The tone is way too warm and lacks all of the inherent shrillness and breathiness of concert audio; that includes DeGarmo's harmonies and the rest of the band as a whole, both vocally and musically.

Hope that you venture down into the Queensryche rabbit hole!

Thank you so much for this, I am a baritone like tate and have his range. YOU are the first coach that explained this in a way that i was hanging on to all your words. I understand what you mean about loving that note. When you nail it and the acousting in your own hear are in the perfect spot...it just rings like a bell inside the head and becomes so easy to hold it. So many coaches kept using the falsetto term and I always felt it was more than that. I have Noticed that Baritones tend to have the higher of the ranges
I'm vocally trained. I've heard a lot of great voices. The roundness, range and overall quality of his voice is so rare it's like finding a unicorn running down Rodeo Drive on the 4th of July in a snow storm.

Geoff Tate is absolutely incredible! I’ve followed his career and I’ve yet to be disappointed! Damn it was good to grow up in the eras of pure, raw talent!✌🏻😎
When I listen to him as a singer myself, he seems to not just get stuck in some notion of a technique, but has amassed many vocal tools to call on for the specific emotional phrasing the lyrics and meaning demands. His tools show up as wide vibrato here, tight vibrato there, high tone here, low tone there, and a complete mastery of nuanced mouth and throat shapes to get the most exacting emotional expression he wants in any one part of the song. Also, it seems that his body posture and movements seemed really honed to get the most for that expression.
Love your combination of studious musical appreciation with the unavoidable headbanging that inevitably comes with this song and Tate’s vocal virtuosity!
Really all of these reaction videos just confirm what I sensed in the 80's when this song first came out...the vocal performance was untouchable. Not today or since can pull this off the way Geoff did at that time...not even Geoff himself. A combination of technique, youth, talent, and the moment. I'm at least glad this performance and band get the accolades today for what they were back then...an absolute masterpiece.
We just saw him last week… he can still bring it! Sounds amazing! And I had no idea he played the saxophone 🎷 Edit: also check out ‘Queen of the Rÿche’ you love it

I've watched many vocal coaches react to this version of Take Hold of the Flame, but your critique is one of the best. This band didn't have a weak link from their song writing, musical talent, and live performances. Check out their conceptual album Operation MindCrime, in fact Operation Live Crime was one of the best and underrated adapted to stage performances.
I' seen this band the first time during the Empire tour at the Joe Louis Arena way back in 91 I believe, they played the full Empire Album and Operation Mindcrime.. i was so blown away that I seen them 4 more times over the years. I have seen legends, from Clapton to Billy Joel to Elton John etc and this band was the best live band I have ever seen. You need to go down this rabbit hole and watch the evolution of his voice. I'd hit every album all the way up to Hear in the now frontier and then it was over. Lol
Love Tate, Halford, Dickenson from the 80’s into the 90’s with their sustained high note vocal abilities… A great example from the 2000’s to today is Myles Kennedy - who seemingly effortlessly can do the same thing Live with 4 octave range and breath control!💪 He is an ardent student of Bel Canto techniques and has only gotten better with age, rather than the other way around with most ‘rock’ vocalists. For Live - AlterBridge anything from Royal Albert Hall concert with Parallax orchestra will give a beautiful example of late 40’s Myles sounding so great!
Hi. New to your channel. Some more info on Geoff Tate for you. His aunt was a professional opera singer. He trained in opera starting at 8 years old, I believe. If you want to see/hear more, watch their pinnacle album "Operation: Mindcrime" performed live as "Operation: Livecrime" from 1991. It's a concept album, PHENOMENAL. This song was performed in their encore along with "Queen of the Reich" which is another mind-blowing performance. Geoff still tours, currently with Adrian Vandenberg. Thanks for this reaction!
Another, similar artist w/ the golden voice is from Steelheart. Try the acoustic version (live) of "She's Gone." It's magic. (Full band is also great, but the acoustic version just hits the spot). (I think he gets up to the G5 to boot).
Love your analysis and appreciation of Geoff's off-the-charts vocals! This is the original lineup of the band, which is MAGIC! This is a song off their FIRST full-length album. Geoff stays in his higher register primarily in their first couple of albums, and then brings in more if his lower register later on. Whatever notes he sings are just spectacular! EVERY member if the band is fantastic! I really enjoy vocal coaches and other professionals' breakdowns and observations. Very informative and interesting! And yes, the three E5's (especially that second one -- what tone!) are something Geoff's known for. He has amazing tone, pitch, vibrato, expression...he just has it ALL! And, he's a baritone! You might want to try these songs to hear some samples of their diversity: "THE KILLING WORDS" and "I WILL REMEMBER", and "DELLA BROWN" all from MTV Unplugged ,1992. "ANYBODY LISTENING?" "THE WHISPER" "JET CITY WOMAN" "ONE MORE TIME" "ANOTHER RAINY NIGHT" "I DREAM IN INFRARED " "ROADS TO MADNESS " ALL of their concept album "OPERATION: MINDCRIME"! Just to get you started. And there are SO many more, it's hard to pick. Hope we hear more Queensryche reactions from you!
I had one of those magical bonding moments with my Dad when I was a young man. My Dad loved country music, shocker. But one day I just had to share Geoff Tate and Queensrÿche with him. I forget which song it was. One of the many where he starts out singing low and then reaches the stratosphere. My Dad's eyes lit up, "How does he do that?!!". People with no desire for heavy metal can listen to Queensrÿche and be blown away by the talent.
I had an uncle who me that the vocals and guitars was just noise after I played the guitar parts to this song,, I said "just noise",, and he said yup.. so tried to hand him my guitar and said, "if it's just noise, you do it"! I caught some flack from my parents on that one but I made my point! Just an outstanding song front to back, Top to bottom!

Hope we hear more Queensryche reactions from you!
I so envy evey1 @ these concerts.
Great reaction, subscribed
I had one of those magical bonding moments with my Dad when I was a young man. My Dad loved country music, shocker. But one day I just had to share Geoff Tate and Queensrÿche with him. I forget which song it was. One of the many where he starts out singing low and then reaches the stratosphere. My Dad's eyes lit up, "How does he do that?!!". People with no desire for heavy metal can listen to Queensrÿche and be blown away by the talent.
Great singer, still have there first album, as well as there others.
This whole concert is worth a watch! Especially "Queen of the Ryche" and "The Lady Wore Black" 🤘
I love this Song soo mutch !!!! Best live
The music of my youth, love their music. Speaking of great vocalists, Eivor just released a new song, and she is pure magic.
SEEN THEM LIVE OPENING FOR MAIDEN IN NYC IN 1984
Another great voice to react to is Rik Emmett from Triumph. Check out luve performances of Lay it on the Line, Fight the Good Fight and Never Surrender for 1983s Us festival.

Great analysis and reaction. Will check out some of your others. 🤘🏼
He told me he had an aunt in the opera and he seemed to take this as inspiration.
Makes sense.
he is awesome
You should also check out Ric Emmett lead singer of Triumph in Fight the Good Fight live at the Us Festival ... Very similar feel.
I saw them live on this tour. They were opening for KISS and musically blew KISS off the stage which pains me to say because I've been a KISS fan since I was 8. I was an instant fan and have been since.
Weird but true fact: I was in the audience for the concert scenes of Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park.
Geoff is my favorite metal singer of all time. Simply untouchable and mind blowing. Would love to hear your opinion on Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford.
React to the band TNT! Singer is Tony Harnell and every song on the album Tell No Tales is incredible!
He was taught by Seattle's Maestro David Kyle.
Here because of hawk on tiktok, first reaction I watched of the song
Excellent commentary and reaction!
Glad you enjoyed!
Geoff really is just something else isn't he? And Queensryche to this day are a great, great band.
He is indeed!
You gotta see their masterpiece Operation Mindcrime live! His voice is guaranteed to astound!!!
Pretty sure that was one of the encore songs. Tate was Halford and Dickinson rolled into one.
The MTV "Unplugged" session is pretty awesome. The band was on the verge of a breakup, and it's evident on stage. But, the performance was top-shelf.
All should try their song; Queen of the Reich. Was the first song I heard by them in '83 (maybe early '84) from their first 4-song EP (promotional). It is released again in '84 and I got one and wore it out on my stereo.
It must've been Hawk that put you up to this! I saw the video also. Love Queensryche.
Geoff Tate in his prime was amazing, Queensryche amazing band , great times 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
He was the best in the 80s......him and Floor are the 2 best live singers I've ever seen .
