Absolutely! Chris did awesome harmonies! And Chris and Michael's "twin guitars". I also liked when they would kind of feature Eddie's bass on some of the tracks, which always sounded so good! And not to leave out Scott -- love his intensity and unique rhythms!
I disagree only in that it is his crystal clear high notes in contrast to his smooth regular singing voice that makes him unreachable as a vocalist. No one, no one could do that and do it as clearly. It amazed me in 1984 and it still does!
That little shiver of blissful joy whenever he goes high... I do exactly the same whenever I hear this song. Also, props to Eddie Jackson for the incredible backing vocals

I NEVER get tired of this concert, the whole band yet alone Geoff puts out a flawless gem of a concert ! When I first heard Queen Of The Reich when it came out, I was immediately sold. Up until Empire everything they put out was spot on. After that, not. But that ca 1983-1991 era is one of the best ever by any band. Thank you Beth, you really loved his performance, as we all do !!!

I was wondering what you might have thought of Geoff Tate, he's high up in my favorite vocalists list, and your insights made this reaction a "why can't I like it twice?" Hopefully later on some classic Rob Halford or Bobby Ellsworth might wind up featured. Both of those singers are still capable of being spot on for their vocals in spite of having performed like they have for thirty years.

In the 80s, Geoff Tate was, simply, untouchable! He was a level above the rest, including Bruce Dickinson, Michael Kiske, Halford, Mercury etc. Geoff combined his classical opera training with metal, in a way that few could ever do. A complete artist, who also mastered the art of conducting his audience. Pure class
There’s been some recent videos of Geoff Tate live and while he obviously doesn’t have the range or power of 35 years ago he can still sing well. Maybe you could do a compare and contrast, then and now. I’d love to see one for Tate and for Axl Rose. For some reason I haven’t seen many do reactions for Axl which is strange because love him or hate him his vocal style is one of most distinct in music.
Yes, Queensryche! One of the best bands of the 80's out there. Please check out "Someone else?", and make sure to listen to the original version with piano (it's better than the full band version, imo). Such a powerful song both musically and emotionally, and also showcases how a stripped down song can still be so full just by adding Geoff Tate's voice. Thanks for reviewing Take Hold of the Flame!
My opinion? There are a ton of us here who simply searched "Geoff Tate" to see what comes up. We then watch a bunch of vocal coaches react to him, just like most of us did in the '80s. To save everyone the time, this guy has range, control, diction and vibrato that leaves unknowing professionals (or those who pretend to be one) speechless. That's what Geoff does to us all. Always has. Always will. Timeless.
I thank you for picking this song. Geoff Tate has always been this good, it is just a shame he wasn’t appreciated fully at the time. I discovered Queensryche right after they released their first full length album, The Warning, in 1984. They tried to hype the song Warning, but, Take Hold of the Flame was better, to me. In fact it became my favorite Queensryche song and still is today (10/21/2021). You as all of the vocal coaches I have heard, hit on this point. You focused on the control Geoff has. It allows him to hit ridiculous notes clearly and with volume. That is rare and, in fact, no one does it better in this style of music (hard rock/metal) rock or has ever done it better. I think that, now, I know why I appreciate him, so much as your insight reminded me of something. You mentioned that he is a baritone yet pushes his voice much higher, much like Chris Cornell, yet much clearer (No knock on Chris as his still in is incredible, as well). Although I am no where near as good, I do the same thing, so I feel a sort kinship with him. Anyway, I think Geoff Tate is the best hard rock/metal vocalist of all time with Robert Plant and Chris Cornell (In that order) right behind him. If you would like to examine more of his work in a similar vein, I recommend these Queensryche tunes, Queen of the Reich, The Prophecy, Warning, Walk in the Shadows, I Don’t Believe in Love and Another Rainy Night. These songs are Geoff and Queensryche at their peak. I hope you enjoy them.
