- Hello Gorgeous,
In this video, the legendary voice guru @jvoxfox and I react to the mesmerising Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche performing Take Hold Of The Flame. In this video, we analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate the vocal techniques and we'll tell you what we think made it so great! Analysing a beautiful voice with Julia was honestly a dream come true. I am so excited to share this. She is so special and I am really looking forward to seeing her again and singing our hearts out!!

You're so intersting, knowledgeable and fun! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you haven't, listen to the most underated rock opera all the way through Queensryche; Operation Mindcrime. It will affect you in many ways, enjoy it as we do You!
Look at these two lovely ladies!!!!
Elizabeth, tell them to do Helloween together. for example Keeper of the Seven Keys. And a recommendation for you...Forever and one by Helloween, both Micheal and Andi singing it, official live performance. You'll love it! All the best, Charismatic Vocal Lady :)
We're now wanting the Trio of Awesome to collaborate on some mad reactions.
They did an awesome, awesome job , I don't think anyone can break it down quite like you do but I truly enjoyed their take
Two of you three ladies have done one The Warning reaction each, both of them stellar entertainment. Wouldn't it be great to have all three of you do the next one together, in person or via the interwebs? 💖💖💖
🔥🎯🔥🎯🔥
@@danieljodrey7677 Great idea! What would you suggest they react to? The acoustic version of Sinister Smiles? Disciple? Revenant?
I will always say this shout out to Chris DeGarmo for being able to keep up with Geoff Tate vocals
His harmonizing was top notch
Chris DeGarmo is so criminally underrated.
The whole band is underrated. Ed and Scott were probably one of the finest rhythm sections for their time. Michael Wilton perfectly complimented DeGarmo's guitar work.
As I have said in almost every reaction I have seen, Chris was the heart and soul of the band.
@@Rendclaw I think that's kind of reductive of the rest of the band, but I know what you mean. To me, Ed, Scott and Michael would have been one of the best metal bands of the era on their own - but Geoff and Chris (guys who weren't really that metal) added that little bit of magic that made them the Queensryche we know. Michael is every bit as important as Chris, just like ed and Scott. It took all of them to be great.
Loved the way Julia was looking at Lolli, they way us old metal-heads watched Julia when she first did her reaction. And yes, Silent Lucidity is a must, as well as the whole of Operation:Mindcrime.
I'd be in RUclips heaven if either lady does the whole Operation:Mindcrime. 🤩🥰
Doug Helvering did the whole thing! The Charismatic Voice did "Suite Sister Mary" and "Eye's of a Stranger"
Yup. So much yup.
Not arguing, Operation:Mindcrime is def a worthy album, but everyone glosses over the first EP, plus the first two albums, and theyre as good or better. Queen Of The Reich, from this concert, is another epic performance
Oh my gosh, YES! The whole HIGHLY acclaimed "Operation: Mindcrime" album! A masterpiece! One long story, well-told. Queensryche excels in the lyrics department as well! And Mindcrime is a tour de force, musically, lyrically, and vocally. A complicated, nuanced gem that never grows old for me even after three plus decades of listening to it. P L E A S E consider it, both of you?
Wait. See, Twang isn't a term I came up with
Are you two talking snout singing on a cry?
Geoff Tate is a true vocal master, he has inspired generations of singers, myself included.
He's a pretty good onion as well
Scott Rockenfield does not get enough credit. Tate is one of the greatest, but he is an amazing drummer
I love this and I love you.
SO MUCH FUN sharing this amazing group with you Lolli! Had an absolute blast hanging out and making this video :)
what a joy it is to see the amount of enjoyment and excitement this video brought the 2 of you very vocally intelligent girls, I discovered this video about a year ago and have been watching every vocal coach/ musician reaction video I can and there only a handful that truly get how good this performance really was. Thank you for sharing your reaction.
I feel Geoff Tate and Queensryche were never as popular as they should have been. Another band in the same boat was Warrant. Jani Lane had an amazing voice, but got very little recognition. I have not seen any voice coach reactions to Jani's voice. Any chance of doing that in the near future?
I loved the vocal nerding out. If Lolli and Julia were a double act of any entertainment medium, I’d cash in my retirement to see them succeed. Splendid humans!
Count with me for the same lol
Love them ♥
I whole heartily agree
Great chemistry!
I get to see Geoff Tate in Jan. A small venue and we are all older and less hair but I can’t wait.
Not sure I'd cash out my retirement fund.. but I would pay $100 to see these lovely ladies do a duet😄🤣
That look on your face when you are vicariously enjoying someone experiencing something you love for the first time...
I loved seeing Lolli's reaction but also seing Julia not have to worry about reacting and purely enjoying
As a Queensryche fan I absolutely adore watching really good vocal coaches just _lose their s**t_ over that first E5, and then again at the last. 😄
I loved you two rocking out to the sections between as well. Great balance of technical appreciation and enthusiasm! :D
I've been a fan since they came out with "The Warning". I managed to see them in '86 when they opened for Ozzy on their "Rage for Order" tour
Is amazing how good was Geoff Tate
Yeah, and nobody's really touched "Queen of the Ryche" yet, which is loaded with E5's...
@TruckerMikeBA Same here and I HATED Rage when it came out. Now it's my favorite Qryche album
The way she looks to her right to see the other one's reaction is priceless.
This reaction was an onion!!!!! We have the superhuman vocals of Geoff Tate. We have two of the web's finest reactors. We have the infectious chemistry of (what looks like) two lifelong friends. We have out of control vocal nerdery. We have the shock and surprise of a 1st time reaction. We have the joy and excitement of a fan showing off what she loves. Its just so much overwhelming goodness!!!!! Lolli, when you react to "Silent Lucidity", you're gonna flip you lid. He's almost like an entirely different singer and still just a amazing!
🧅🧅🧅🧅
You just nailed everything about what makes watching these two react to Geoff so off-the-chart ENJOYABLE!!
And that probably wasn't even the end of the concert
And to think that this song was belted out as an ENCORE song after singing for 2 hours!!! He then followed it up with “Queen of the Rÿche”, an equally difficult song and once again nailed it!!! When they opened for the legend Dio, they were not very well known and they brought the house down and especially this song left the audience freaking out like “WHAT WAS THAT?!?!?!!” (In a good way). Geoff in his prime was a vocal BEAST with a 5 octave range. 🤘
Welcome from the great State of Washington which is where Queensryche is from.I just wanted to say thank-you for show casing some of Seattles WA best ROCK. Thanks
I always say for a natural baritone, his range and power are amazing!
Welcome to one of the finest vocalists on earth.🫡
Also to note of Tate's stamina, since this track was the second to last song in the set performance. In addition, this is pure natural ability as there was no such thing as "auto tune" in '84.
Very true! Geoff seems to have an uncanny ability to stay on key. Also, speaking of stamina, he once stated that he used to hit the gym hard for 6 months before a tour. It certainly showed!!
These guys worked diligently to give the best show possible! I hope they know we fans recognized and appreciated their dedication that resulted in pure magic!! It did for ME anyway!
there was auto tune in 84. the technology just wasn't able to be utilized in a live performance but it was used in the studio all the time. we called it the "big knob box" because it was a box with a big dial on it you used to dial in the note. today's auto tune tech is sophisticated enough to auto tune a voice in real time so it is used live.
There were some overdubs done post recording ,but Geoff is still incredible
I take this was at the end at their set. I don't know how many songs that was for this tour, but it's bloody hard to sing this well after 3 hours of screaming and shouting. Nice Geoff.
Warms my heart to see young people seeing the magic of Queensryche
This is off of their first full length album, not only does Tate sound fantastic the entire band is just phenomenally tight.
Next step in the Queenryche/Geoff Tate journey: "I Will Remember" (Live '92). You guys were great together. Stay awesome!
I second this
Third! I Will Remember and The Killing Words from the Unplugged session might be Tate's best live performance.
Forth raw Tate at his best.
@@rbrebrook That's a major statement I think. Both unplugged versions are awesome! But Tate has plenty of inhuman performances. Watching him perform "Roads To Madness" live was INCREDIBLE.
@@benitokamelo252 I saw him perform Roads To Madness live in May of 91 during the Building Empires Tour, just a few dates before they filmed Operation: Livecrime in Madison & Milwaukee, WI. It was the first time I got to see them live (I missed them when I couldn't attend Ozzy's Ultimate Sin tour in 1986.) I was blown away by how tremendous Tate was live. I've seen some vocal greats perform in person on Broadway and the whole 2hrs+ of that show I couldn't get over how Tate sounded impossibly better the longer he performed. And he PERFORMED! He was mesmerizing on stage and not once did I think he he might have flubbed line or note . Roads to Madness,The Lady Wore Black, THOTF are no joke combined with Operation: Mindcrime in it's entirety plus a good portion of the Empire album. It's just mind boggling how talented Tate is as a front man and vocalist to pull it off night after night. That show is the best live performance by anyone that I've ever seen. And to think he had only about 6 lessons from Maestro David Kyle covering some technique. It's just raw talent on exhibition and most of us have been here for it since about 1983 😂
All that being said, I still think those two performances during the Unplugged session are a nearly perfect delivery.
I am a former classical singer and this guy along with Roy Khan of Kamelot turned me onto metal. I dated a professional opera singer awhile ago and showed her Queen of the Reich from the same concert and her jaw was on the floor after it. Whenever I want to be humbled about singing, I try and sing a Queensryche song. Geoff Tate is a crazy good singer.
Chris is underrated as a backing vocalist as well.
I love watching people hear the incomparable Tate for the first time.
He's not just one of the very best vocalist ever...he's also a great performer!
I've been a fan of Queensryche, and especially Geoff Tate, since '85, and in my opinion, he's still the best male singer I've ever heard. Great video!
Well, not one but two radiant gingers. Both so musically astute, and reacting to the awesome vocal prowess of the great Geoff Tate. So, this reaction video is all kinds of special. Please believe me that it was truly a treat from absolute start to finish. Feel free to continue to grace us all with your finely combined presence.
YES, YES, YES!!
What has always impressed me about Geoff Tate is that he's a baritone singing those crazy high notes....and can perform an entire show across that range. We can all sing for a short time at the edges of our range, but Geoff not only has an unusually broad range but also has the vocal endurance to crush entire albums out there at the upper edges of that range.
Geoff is classically trained. Maestro David Kyle was his teacher...who also taught Ann Wilson, Layne Staley and Chris Cornell. There's a reason those are some of the best vocalists in rock history. :)
That is very good company.
Calling him "classically trained" is a gross overstatement. Tate just "started singing spontaneously", and as he didn't have the stamina to keep it up, he saw David Kyle half a dozen times (couldn't do more because he couldn't afford it).. So no, Geoff Tate was not trained at all.
Here it is, in Tate's own words : ruclips.net/video/hN_PuYp--Eg/видео.html
No he is not classically trained they started during high school
He just has natural talent
@@ericarmstrong6769 he studied under Maestro David Kyle when he was lead singer in Myth. "They" didn't start anything at Interlake Highschool.
This was the most fun I've ever had watching Queensryche. You two are too much fun, and also brilliant analysts. I can't say enough good things.
What's also impressive about Geoff is that he's a baritone but shining in tenor range. Those E5 notes are perfection, he is truly one of the best singers ever in the metal world.
Such a lovely video! I absolutely love your chemistry together, and Julia being so excited to show you one of her favorite artists was SO relatable!! Your vocal analysis was so insightful as always and it was also neat to hear Julia’s comments on performance, awesome job you two! 💙
I saw Geoff last night, he's 65 years old and he's incredibly the same ! You can't imagine how that sensation are amplified in live! He has got a perfect control in every note!
It’s Geoff. What else can you say!?
Thank you ladies for looking at the bands.
I love the first time reactions.
just watching you gals get into this is all that needs to be said of Geoff Tate...greatest singer of all time!
I saw Queensryche 8 times over ten years, and Geoff is a beast!! Tons of energy, ridiculous breath control. Pitch was always perfect.
Me too!! Saw the band throughout the 9O's many times! And they were exactly as you said!! Oh, how I MISS them all together!
@@purplekat5864 yes!!! I hate they went separate ways. It sounds ugly between them. It was magic for a long time tho!!!
@@milesyager2903
Yeah, they were a magical combination! But from what I've been able to piece together there were a few different factors that contributed to the breakup, beginning with Chris's departure. But I'm SO glad that at least we have the music, videos, etc that we can still watch and listen to. Where's a time machine when you need one??
@@purplekat5864 Yes! Time machine would be awesome! I didn’t know that those years were the absolute time of my life! 🤘It amazes me to find these old clips because it is like a version of that time machine!
Julia must be what I look like, when showing a music video to a friend, constantly looking over at them just to make sure they're getting JUST HOW INSANELY COOL THIS IS.
Great video. Loving how much you're loving it.
Adore Geoff Tate! ❤
"Roads To Madness" is also a must listen!
The only singer that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! So hypnotic
Omg 2 of my favorite vocal coaches together! I’m so happy to watch this and hope to see them together again.
OH, I forgot to say how stellar you and Lolli's harmonies sounded together!! Beautiful!
Awesome reaction!!! Give The Lady Wore Black a listen. You won't be disappointed.
One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to was Queensryche’s Operation Mindcrime tour- which was an album- in which they performed the album, in its entirety, with a “movie length” accompanying video in the background. It was amazing.
That was the Building Empires tour for Empire, the album after Mindcrime. What an amazing show that was. For them to do over a solid hour of high powered songs with no breaks for ballads of any type was amazing.
@@DerekScottBland That was a killer show! I loved the interaction they had with the big screens behind the band. It was one of my favorite shows.
Agreed! I've been to a lot of concerts, but that one is an experience I've never had equaled.
I missed the tour, dammit, but Operation Livecrime is one of the greatest concert DVDs ever.
I was there also. It was awesome
I absolutely love watching you guys nerd out over Geoff. He easily one of the best ever.
You ladies REALLY need to react to Queensryche's studio version of Roads To Madness off The Warning album!
That, my friends, is Geoff Tate's finest vocal performance.
You really won't be disappointed!
Yes Roads to Madness is Geoff Tate at is awesome best all the ranges and colors of a emotional human voice are on grand display 👌 👏 👍
@@paulwhitman3922 absolutely amazing!
The Queensryche Albums are really good. A whole different world.
I absolutely love watching anyone have their first experience with Queensryche. I really do. But I take extra pleasure in watching professionals who really know what GT is doing lose their minds when they see an absolute icon show his mastery.
I highly recommend Mindcrime in its entirety. You really want to enjoy it off camera though.
Queensryche the original lineup were always stellar on stage. The background vocals were always spot on . The whole live experience was something special.
That was a fun watch. Julia, you know that Brittney Slayes lists Jeff Tate as an influence, and our Fairy Voice Mother hasn't reacted to Tonight We Ride yet - or I wonder speaking of Tate, if she's seen Brittney's cover of Tate singing Queen of the Reich in a Karaoke bar after a concert.... could be fun. What a treat seeing you both in the same reaction!
Geoff, and you two...my eyes, ears and mind can't handle so much beauty and vocal talent and expertise on the one screen...
Great reaction...I was lucky enough to see Queensryche in 84 as an opening act for Dio in the UK. From that night I was hooked on Queensryche and especially the great Geoff Tate. I have seen them on numerous occasions and Geoff never failed me live , neither did the band they always sounded exceptional live.
What I love the most about this whole thing, is that Julia now is familIar with this song, and now she’s doing the same thing those of us did with her, which is be excited to see the reaction of the other person. Watching Julia look over at constantly to see how much she loves it and her reaction to the reactions is gold.
I saw them in 1991. His voice was perfect from start to finish. His voice doesn't tire. They played for 2 1/2 hours. I have been to many concerts. Stills ranks as one my top 5. It was surreal.
Me too!!! But in my realm they have the TOP position!
So rad seeing Lolli and Julia head banging rocking out like metal heads at 4:22 as they go into the first verse. I love the song and love their reactions. I have watched this reaction and Julia's 10x each so fun.
Geoff Tate is still just as good. Had the privilege of seeing him live in recent years. Incredible!
What a great time it was back then!!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼 Two more Queensryche fans!!!!
This was such a fun collaboration, so happy to see two awesome channels sharing good singers and singing knowledge. Thanks for the double analysis in one video!
Geoff is in his 60s and sings with a coffee in one hand and his other hand in his pocket! He is still that gifted.
Geoff Tate SOARS!!! I was lucky enough to see this tour way back when at L'Amour rock club in Brooklyn, NY! My jaw is still somewhere on that venue floor...
The girl on the right is absolutely hilarious.she knows what’s coming.grew up 4 blocks away from the band.been a fan since 1983.thank you lady’s for the review.love the expression 😊
And remember, this was at the END of the concert, so he had sang an entire concert and then did this. Simply amazing. Love the reaction and the two of you together! So great seeing it!
Jeff Tate was absolutely untouchable in the eighties / early nineties. Not even the likes of Metal Gods Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson could touch Tate in his prime. I saw Queensryche several times during the eighties/nineties and was just blown away by his vocal range each time I saw them. You need to remember that the performance above is an encore after singing/screaming through 12 plus songs and Tate sounds as fresh as he did when he sang the opener. Jeff Tate did not miss a beat. He never did either. If you didn't see him in his prime, you most certainly missed a legend.
Geoff
The whole album is more relevant than ever today.
I love that theres 170,000 views on here. I hope all of you that never heard Queensryche before are checking them out after this.
Absolutely love the two reactions at the 1st A5 note. Julia knows what's coming & is bursting with anticipation waiting for the reaction!!
Both of my red queens in the same video reacting to one of my favorite bands of all time. Heaven. Thanks, ladies! I enjoyed this very much.
The best voice knowledge on RUclips. Two of my favorite ladies in the same place at the same time, holy wah!!!
The look on their faces especially when Tate hits the high notes is priceless. I grew up listening to Queensryche ever since their EP came out in 83’. It was 4 songs on duplicate sides of a cassette. Yes kids a cassette tape. I wore the thing out listening to it so much. Met the original lineup in 96’. Still have the pictures with them.
Having seen Queensryche live in the 80s, just by happenstance when they opened up for KISS in Philadelphia, my mind was utterly blown when Geoff sang. I have been, and will remain, a loyal fan of Geoff for the rest of my days here on Earth! Thank you both for critiquing Geoff's one-in-a-generation talent!
Just saw Geoff Tate live a few months ago... he may not have the range he did back then, but he can still SANG. Also, Lolli, if you do Silent Lucidity, I would suggest the live version at the MTV Music Awards sometime in the early 90's. It's great.
I love it when people newly discover this song. I had the pleasure of discovering it 38 years ago and still have the vinyl record in my collection.
My heart skipped a beat when I opened this video and found two of my favorite reactors together. This was marvelous. Thank you.
imagine how happy we are to see people respond 40 years later...🤟
I love watching these videos of young vocal coaches hearing Geoff Tate for the first time. Ronnie James Dio should absolutely be the next one you review.
DID YOU KNOW THAT HE ONLY HAD LIKE 9 9 9 ONLY 9 VOICE LESSONS...from the man known as the MAESTRO??? HE LITERALLY TELLS THE STORY ON RUclips...He took lessons but...wasn't rich or anything...but took what he learned and PRACTICED THE HELL OUT OF IT...that's why HE IS MY FAVORITE...HE WORKED AND WORKED FOR THAT VOICE
Love FVM + Love Julia + Love Queensryche + Love Geoff Tate + Love this song = Like button slap of the highest magnitude.
I knew I was going to love this video reaction immediately when i read the description.
Thanks so much for sharing this!
More please... ;q)..
Never gets old seeing reaction videos to my favorite band.
Oh, this was wonderful! Watching the two of you together was so joyful!
Two of my favourite music analysts together, reacting to the mighty Geoff Tate and Queensryche: such unadulterated fun.
Julia's right about Silent Lucidity, BTW.
Also, give yourself a treat and listen to the whole Operation: Mindcrime album. It's one story, with each song representing an episode. And, of course, Geoff is superb.
If you three (inc Charismatic Voice) ever do the trifecta, the world of vocal coaching/reacting would explode.
This. This right here.
I agree :)

I'll bet I watch this at least once a week for the past year. This is my favorite video for both of you. Julia, you've never looked more beautiful than in this natural state video. Lolli, always adorable and never ever misses a beat analysis/reaction-wise. Best video ever. ❤️ to you both.
Brilliant reaction from 2 fantastic ginger ladies! It is always worth mentioning that this was the last song in the set, so Geoff and guys had just done around 90 minutes already.
As if one gorgeous, charming, talented, knowledgeable redhead was not enough!!!
Love you both and was HUGE to watch you together...
This video came out of the nowhere.
Didn't expect something like this.
What a joy to watch this.
What a pleasure.
Thank you both, Ladies!🥰🥰
So lovely.
More Queensryche?
Yea, please!
More Reactions together from you both?
Heck, yes!
Have a nice and wonderful Weekend,Ladies.
Best regards 🥰🥰
To see you anticipating her reaction is awesome,I love the appreciation you both have in this master vocalist,It warms my heart to see the younger generation discovering such great bands as these guys!!
I saw them three nights in a row and he was just was fabulous the last minute of the last night as he was in the first minute of the first! His voice is amazeballs!
hell what a dreamteam of competence ;plz more
No in ear monitors, just a floor monitor. But that only helps when you stand in front of it. He's moving constantly, so it's even more amazing that he's on pitch. Especially with all of the other instrumentation going on. Mere mortals need to be able to hear themselves to sing properly.
This is gonna be amazing! And I'm here for it!!
"Operation Mindcrime" tour,I was there. His voice is legendary and the whole band is talented as any I have ever seen.
LOVE Geoff Tate, One of my all time favorites.
The greatest vocalist of all time.
One of the greatest rock songs in history performed by the rock singing GOAT.
So fun to watch this one! I love seeing someone discover Geoff. He's not human.
Of all the reactions you've made this is one of my top 5 favorites. Thank you
AAAAAAA first Julia with Elizabeth, and nooooow with my favo-ry voice mother 😍😍😍 Thanks to Julia for picking one of the best songs by Queensryche, always wanted to see you reacting to this, Lolli 🤩
These two together are great. And reacting to Geoff..pure gold. ❤
Really enjoyed seeing both of you enjoying queensryche . I watched analses from both of you, but the chemistry here proves:1+1 is somtimes much more then 2!!
Thanks for the enjoyment!!
This might be my favorite reaction video ever... Not just Fairy Voice, but Julia's wonderful, knowing, reactions... just ridiculously fun to watch. :)
So happy to watch you react to this one. Definitely need to do Silent Lucidity next. Recently, Fairy Voice Mother, you made mention of how you appreciated the complete soundscape of a song. A great example of that would include Suite Sister Mary: rain, thunder, police sirens, Gothic Latin choirs and your keen ears might hear even more. Plus it's another impressive physical performance by Mr. Tate. Your FV children await with giddy anticipation. 🧚♀️💞
YES! YES! YES!!
Two beautiful "Jinjers" admiring the incredible vocal skills of a perfectionist performing his craft. Geoff's voice cannot be overstated. The man is incredible. Well done, girls.
Thats the best coop reaction ever. You two have such an amazing chemistry and appreciation to those little details we like. Wanna see more collabs. BTW you both are so pretty and fun :)
