@@gt4589 I agree it's a great song but in my opinion rage for order is their best album it was so ahead of it's time and it put queensryche as one of the top bands and they kept putting out great albums but rage was the one that was incredible from start to finish

The Album you mentioned didn't sell half as much, and was release 2 years before they even showed up on MTV... @@scott8319 I used to hear some of their songs on the radio in the Chicagoland area well into the 90's until the rock and metal stations died and all that was left was altrock, college rock, and oldies. Maybe we were just lucky in my area back then. My boss listens to a rock station that still plays them on occasion. It is a damn shame that the radio used to dictate how successful a band could be.
@@keithmorgan1170 In the context of the mid 80's, yes. Of course there was heavier stuff at the time and before, but none of that got any radio airplay beyond the odd college radio station taking a break from British new wave.
Geoff Tate has never gotten the mainstream respect he deserved. The period between 84 and about 93 he was supernatural. Those octave jumps you mentioned are kind of his trademark.
@@cyber5873 He did get respect from people who knew what a 4-octave voice was and could do. Most casual radio listeners had no idea who he was. Mindcrime opened the door and Empire was unstoppable. We shouldn't forget songwriting. Without great songs, it doesn't matter how good the voice is.
Actually, according to the video sleeve's liner notes, portions of this performance were re-recorded. Listen to Before the Storm from this Budokan [Tokyo] show; it's not included in the video, but live audio recorded from the board can be found online as an example of unsweetened Queensryche for comparison. I've seen Tate perform with these guys literally a dozen times going back to Rage. They're the tightest and most album-perfect live band this side of Maiden. But Live in Tokyo was polished later.
I said it on another video and I'll say it again - Not enough credit goes to Chris DeGarmo for all of his harmonies that he sings along with Geoff. And such an awesome guitarist to boot!
Also his lyrics. He wrote and cowrote a lot, and really seemed to be the key to the band's greatness, looking at their body of work after he left, there's some gems but they don't compare.
Agreed DeGarmo was the difference maker. His writing of music and lyrics was tantamount in making the Ryche. The front man gets more credit than he deserves. That being said Tate was the greatest vocalist on the planet for a time.
Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), and Geoff Tate (Queensryche) are affectionately known at The Three Tremors. It is more than earned.
@@nashidmamoon9151 a portion of that is from him bowing out of music for quite a bit, so he didn't stay on everyone's radar. Though a silver lining of that is he can still do all his 80's repertoire justice in his 50's and his work with Avantasia and Pumpkins United the last few years were fantastic.
You're right about Chris DeGarmo. Probably one of the most underrated writers, guitarist and backing vocalist of that Era. One of the best in my opinion. So talented

This is a very emotional & soulful performance in which, towards the end, he does a live echo effect using no electronic gadgets, just vocal dynamics and closeness/distance from the microphone. If you didnt see Tate in the 80's and early 90's, you missed the oportunity to witness one of the single greatest metal vocalists of all time. In his prime, he was untouchable. Even Dickinson or Halford could not touch Tate. Queensryche were so awesome live and sounded just like you are hearing them here....Legends🤟🤟🤟
I saw them at monsters of rock with scorpions, van halen, dokken, can't remember who else. Wait! I think Metallica was there too. This was in the late 80s i believe.
I couldn't agree more! I was blessed to see them for Operation: Mindcrime, Empire/Operation: Livecrime and the 20th anniversary of Mindcrime. I saw Judas Priest in the late 80s also but Queensryche blew them away

Their album "Operation Mindcrime" is one of the pinnacles of rock music. It's impossible to suggest a particular song as they are strung together exquisitely to tell a unique story. I know you can't do a video for an entire album. But, you should sit down with the lyrics and enjoy it in it's entirety. It was a literal life changer for me.
Yep. I hadn't heard many of those Mindcrime tracks in years, but could instantly recall every single lyric of every song on that album without missing a beat when hearing it 25 years later. That album was and is an absolute masterpiece.
Operation Mindcrime was my favorite album in Junior High. The only problem is while the whole album is amazing, you need to listen to the whole album. Which I recommend.

I think that one of the amazing things about Mindcrime is that each song works individually on its own, as well as all the songs working together as a whole. At any rate, Mindcrime is definitely one of the best metal albums ever made and I too recommend listening to the whole album.

I saw someone comment recently that this song was an encore. The fact that he had the kind of vocal stamina to do this after already performing for ~2 hours is mind blowing.
I attended and photographed Queensryche's first EVER "public performance" as Queensryche on June 29,1983 (Portland, OR). Tate hit every note (just as recorded) and they were my favorite band for the next 10 years afterwards. Tate was unbeatable in his range, for years after. Hard to believe that was 38 years ago. How time flies.
Did you attend their club performances before they did big concerts? That would be so cool to walk into a bar and hear the beginning of this great band.

I've listened to this song/performance at least a hundred times and every vocal coaches and others reaction to it and never thought about how the background chants are like cheers, absolutely busted out laughing when she said that, she is so cute
Tate is one of my favorite singers. His range was crazy good. But for me, what made him one of the best is his emotions in his singing. He didn't just sing, he told a story. I hope one day you listen and react to Suite Sister Mary from their Operation Mindcrime album. He does a duet with Pamela Moore. They had so much chemistry and intensity together, it will give you chills up and down your spine.
@FatalPies I've been a fan of Crimson Glory/Midnight for many years. The first time I heard Transcendence, I was blown away by his voice. To say he is better is subjective. If I had to choose who I prefer, Tate is my preference.
@Fatboy - I was coming here to recommend Suite Sister Mary too. I love the harmonies and how they play off each other in the livecrime version, and think Liz will truly appreciate it. Most of the MTV unplugged stuff is good too, like I Will Remember.

I have been listening to Geoff Tate for almost 40 yrs. now and that was one of the best analysis of his vocal style and range I have ever heard and that includes the Metal community who have studied him for decades. You heard all the nuances in his voice in such a short time I can tell you're the real deal. Much respect....
Ugggg yup. I remember seeing them barely in jr high in San Diego opening for keel. Back when they might have still been in late teens or just hitting 20’s and when his voice was still young and ungodly powerful.
Yeah. Elizabeth's expressions are priceless. She's like a 10 year old and mom just offered seconds on dessert. I would love for her to do a reaction/analysis on Rush - 2112: Overture / The Temples Of Syrinx / Discovery. Though, perhaps skip the Overture. A bit too long.
@@form4li7y He used to be. I saw him in 2011 with Queensryche and he was awful. He modified the songs so there were no high notes sung. It completely ruined the show for me. We had several local guys in town that could have nailed those songs. Two of them have videos on youtube. I don't know if Chris had been the one keeping Geoff's ego in check up until he left or what. Geniuses are often the victims of their own hubris in the end, it seems to me.

I have seen Queensryche perform “Take Hold of the Flame” live over 30 times, and yes, I felt lucky every time. Sitting here bawling my eyes out because now you get why Queensryche was my absolute favorite band growing up. It’s so incredible to hear you pick up on the emotion in their music in both this song and Silent Lucidity. Geoff Tate is unequaled. I would love for you to listen to “Eyes of a Stranger”, “I Will Remember” …or even “Screaming in Digital”.
Its so incredible to be in the first several rows of a live show at the Moore or Paramount and witness him singing like that right in front of you. Just incredible. Same feeling with Ann Wilson, Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury.
I went to see Queensryche around '83 or '84. Those days are a blur. Cant remember exactly. Anyway, got about a mile away from the venue when my friends tire on his car blew out. It was outside so we could hear when the band took the stage. By the time we got the tire changed, got into the parking lot, parked, ran up the entry, ran uphill to where the seating is, got just in view of the stage, we heard "thank you, good night" followed by the lights going out.
There are 3 things that I'd like to point out: 1) This song was at the end of an hour and a half show. 2) Geoff's aunt was a professional opera singer. 3) Geoff's vocal coach was Maestro David P. Kyle. Maestro Kyle was also the vocal coach for Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and Ann Wilson of Heart.
I would like to add one point 4) Geoff Tate was a Baritenor - a rare classificassion I believe. Bright and warm in his lower notes, shine and bright on the top notes. As so Roy Khan from Kamelot was too. I am a baritenor and had some classical classes. Used to take them as inspiration. The problem with this kind of voice and classification is: with time we lost all this power to reach the top notes as Geoff and Roy Khan did. They cannot sing so well in this register today.
Tate will always be the best voice to me forever! Nobody can replicate that voice! The Range, the power, the change to lower notes and coming back up is nothing that I've heard ever again!

If you've never heard that sort of performance "ever again," you haven't paid attention to Queensryche as they've carried on, because Todd La Torre is just a powerful and just as gymnastic in his deliveries. I just saw them live earlier this month, and they did this song, and he nailed every bit of it. It's not an either/or situation. I love Tate's work. But to pretend like no one else can do it is just patently absurd.

Geoff Tate in his prime was IMO the best vocalist I had ever seen and heard. I was fortunate enough to meet him right before the release of "Warning" and was just floored by thier whole performance. I saw them 7 more times right up to thier theatrical "Operation Mindcrime" tour. Just the pinnacle of what a vocalist should strive for. Range and control.
Agree, I have been a ton of concerts (probably close to 100) from late 80s until now and I have not seen another singer that could touch his vocal performance in the mid 80's to early 90s stuff.
They were super cool guys, weren't they? I was fortunate enough to meet the whole band more than once & the pinnacle was talking with Geoff Tate for about 10min after the show at First Avenue in Mpls back in the day.
Queen of the Ryche from their 1st EP was a warning to the other rock bands that this incredible band was ready to burst onto the scene. His voice just blew everyone away. Long time ago when the rock and metal scene was really starting to explode.
I was hoping to see her listen to Queen of the Ryche because it's a favorite of mine. The notes and composition of them are insane. So is Tate's ability to hold those notes for what seems like forever. Of course, he did it all the time and made it look effortless. I saw them live in '91. Nothing before or since has compared for me. The entire band is just out of this world talented.
Queen of the Ryche from this performance just completely blows away Take Hold of the Flame. But here we are 40 years later and im listening to Geoff singing in Sweet Oblivion and hes lost nothing.
That’s so cool that you picked up on Chris Degarmo’s vocals in this too...he often sings harmonies above Geoff Tates lines but it’s not always recognized. They were such a talented band.
Three words: Roads to Madness. Do it, you will never be the same! Tate was the MAN! I was fortunate enough to see him about 10 times between "The Warning" & "American Soldier". He killed it every time.

"Take Hold Of The Flame" is a great showcase, but "I Don't Believe In Love" is probably their best song. "Queen Of The Reich" is my personal favorite, though.
Geoff Tate has one of the greatest voices in rock ever. His range, pitch, and timbre are incredible. He is a sniper for large intervalic leaps, hitting lows-to-highs with perfect precision.
My sister is a trained singer. She sang all over Europe. She is retired and in her fifties. She is not easily surprised. Hilarious. I played this for her as I have several others. Not always a big reaction. She did what you did...she said, stop. Played her keyboard to match. Played it again, said, stop. To the piano again. She was blown away. She said, I have never listened to much rock but whoever this man is you must tell me, was he classically trained? I said, I’m not sure. I said, is he good, she said, E5s like nothing and it was not falsetto it was straight up a resounding full fledged note and with vibrato. I said, you liked it? She said, yes, absolutely. Any trained singer would be. Her question? Where did a rock band find him as lead singer? LOL.
He took lessons from "The Maestro", as did a lot of famous and non-famous Seattle vocalists. David Kyle was known as "The Maestro," so yes, Tate was classically trained, and so was Warrel Dane, from Sanctuary/Nevermore, by the same teacher. Yeah but Dickinson hits E5 all night long and sings way more true voice where as Tate did heavy mix . I don't buy the true voice thing with tate. . he like King Diamond , do the " Weepy Voice," technique which is a way to do a heavy mix that sounds like true voice. He does it so much it is hard to tell the dif unless your the one doing it .
Geoff Tate actually is a baritone but worked very hard to train himself to push up into those higher notes and deliver them with power. He has a four octave range, from the A below C up to the A above high C. His aunt was an opera singer with the Cincinnati Opera and influenced his classical tastes early on. He had years of classical training and even thought he'd grow up to be an opera singer. His family was very much into music, and he played in the school band and a jazz band. As he got older, though, he discovered rock music and, as they say, the rest is history. Oh, and you'll enjoy this fact, Elizabeth: On the subject of drinking hot liquids before a show, Geoff said in a recent-ish interview: "Yeah, hot tea pretty much keeps me going." So... time for a Tea Time with Geoff Tate?
Definitely the album version with piano accompaniment only. There was a full band version which I also enjoyed, but just Geoff with the piano here is fantastic.
Yeah that's an amazing performance, I don't like "Unplugged" sessions, but QR made it a whole 'nuther experience. But I miss the "Whistles" from the studio version. EVERYtime I watch the MTV version, I _whistle_ the missing parts :p.
And I would have to say it would be tough to pick just ONE song of his for her to listen to. I mean, the whole first album. And yet his later song, "Mermaids." Oh.My.Gawd.
Heard it live more than once and Tate was perfect EVERY TIME on EVERY SONG. Never witnessed anyone who could do that, including Dickinson, Mercury, and Halford. Peak Tate is hands down the greatest singer that ever graced my ears.
That particular E5 he belts out at 10:52 might be the best sounding one he's ever nailed. The first and last E5's in the song were great, but that second one might be Geoff Tate's finest moments ever recorded live.
Metal musicians are the classical musicians of modern times. They are often the best guitar players. Definitely the best drummers. There was no falsetto in Geoff's voice, just pure power that lets him push notes wherever they need to go with smooth power.
I don't believe I would consider Neil Peart, Gavin Harrison, or Stewart Copeland metal drummers, and all of them are leagues better than the average 80's metal drummer. And I'm not knocking Scott Rockenfield here, who I think is a fantastic drummer for many reasons (there's some behind-the-kit vids from soon after Todd La Torre that really showcase his talent) but I wouldn't rank him among the best.
@@Firearrow5235 I don't think he is necessarily talking about 80's metal specifically but metal as a whole. Rock drummers are not the same as they used to be.
I'm gonna disagree with the best drummers part. There's also a huge population of Jazz drummers that'll give you an earful right now Same with guitarists, though I do agree that there's certainly more skilled guitarists in the Rock genre, you could more than likely find just as talented guitarists in jazz as you do in all the Rock genres My opinion
I saw them in '89 or '90, they closed with "Queen of the Reich" which is probably the most demanding song vocally. And he was just as strong then as in the beginning. Love seeing classically trained musicians appreciate hard rock and metal.
My mom and uncle are opera trained. They made 2 albums when they were young. Geoff has 9 years of opera training. I heard him in a garage b4 they got big. He blew me away. I asked him his range when he was warming up. He said, 4.5 octaves. Wow. I believe when he sings the angels in heaven stop and listen
i had the pleasure to see geoff tate / queensryche at least 20x. they were stellar each and every magical show! one time his stage outfit was falling apart and he still gave an amazing, flawless performance. highly recommend! he's still doing stuff. if you ever have an opportunity to see geoff live, you won't regret it.
I'd recommend the song "Anybody Listening" to hear more of his range, Geoff's a very versatile singer and Queensryche has some really stellar songs from that era.

Agreed. I love Queensryche, and they were my favorite band from the moment their EP was released. Sadly, once DeGarmo left, Queensryche really suffered both musically and lyrically. Despite all of their talent, especially Tate’s otherworldly vocal ability, I think DeGarmo was the heart and soul of Queensryche.

'Suite Sister Mary' I am a HUGE old-school QR fan and this song is the one that STILL gives me goose bumps and I know this album verbatim and have listened to it countless times. Geoff's voice is insane throughout this entire album and 'SSM' is my all-time favorite, please give it a listen.
Yes. Duet with Pamela Moore as Suite Sister Mary. BTW...Her family, Moore of the Moore Theater venue in Seattle. Teri Nunn, of the band BERLIN is her cousin. The chick that sang Gonna Get Close to You, originally gave Geoff opera vocal lessons, I believe.

Off the same concert they do a song called," Roads to Madness" which is showing His lower register, and there is also "Suite Sister Mary" off of "Operation Live Crime"..basically everything Geoff and Chris with Queensryche have done is great..Because of their CREATION which comes to fruitation, we get to analyze and appreciate their musical and artistic greatness which we call music. There is no other group like this Queensryche...

I guess the only problem with Carry On is finding a good quality live performance. Most of the recordings available on youtube either have awful sound or Matos isn't in his best form. But yes, he definitely needs to be featured in this channel!

It's not only Geoffs voice, give the album Operation Mindcrime a shot. The content, the stories, the band, the tightness, the proffesionalism and the art of Queensryche, they are on their own pedestal. Promised land are probably one of their best lyrical albums, so greatful for discovering this band in my youth :)
You should listen to "Suite Sister Mary", "Eyes of a Stranger" or "I Don't Believe in Love" from the Operation: Mindcrime album. Or better yet, listen to Operation: Livecrime in it's entirety. The album as a whole is simply a masterpiece and it remains my favorite album to this day.
i saw them in 84 in newhaven connecticut opening for kiss they blew the doors of the coliseium ,when they played take hold of the flame peoples jaws dropped the could not believe how high jeff tate was singing a night i will never forget!!!!
One of the only shows I missed at the New Haven Coliseum. Saw them open for Metallica in Hartford. For Ozzy in Springfield. And multiple times throughout the Northeast. Saw Geoff on his last few tours and he's still sounds amazing
Columbus Ohio for me. We 3rd or 4th row on that same tour (KISS). They became my number 2 band of all time. KISS being my number one. Belting our Take Hold and the rest of the Warning album on many late night / early morning drives. You can't listen to this song and not pump your fist.

I wouldn't call it "little known", Queensryche's first 3 albums ("The Warning", "Rage for Order" and "Operation: Mindcrime") are Queensryche's 3 best albums, and is also a 1-2-3 combo that is very very hard to top :) (although "Empire" is probably their biggest commercial success, i hold their first 3 albums (all quite progressive) as better than the more streamlined albums that followed. Only my opinion of course :)
Rage is incredible musically and my fav as well. But don't forget besides the first 3 albums there was the ep which was insane for the time and featured the first song they wrote which was a fan favorite “the lady wore black” and another true fan favorite “queen of the reich”
queen of the reich and the lady wore black were the beginning of queensryche, I remember hearing them when they first came out, it hooked me right away. Saw them live several times with DeGarmo, after he left, so did the magic.
@@aintmanyofusleft indeed. DeGarmo, I heard Chris, felt the well was drying up a bit. I had the same feeling of demise for Iron Maiden when Adrian Smith left back in 89. When he left the magic that they had going with those 7 masterpieces, from Iron Maiden up to Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (my personal favorite, also my first tour drying them live on June 10th 1988, San Diego Sports Arena) I felt that magic was broken apart. I really felt there last 3 of those 7 studio albums Powerslave, Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son that they were onto something great going on that direction I agreed with Adrian..... however the boss didn't and when Adrian left the band I became sorta against Janek Gers for being Adrian's replacement , plus I felt justified even more not liking him as his antics on stage was not familiar with me and that of Iron Maiden with Adrian and David more or less concentrating on their chords and not displaying irrational behavior on stage Hear In the Now Frontier is actuality a decent album. The song Hit the Black is epic I like their spin on grunge which I really shy away from
Imagine being a freshman in high school and hearing this for the first time. Up till then it had been Maiden Rush and Van Halen. Man...this brings back memories. Glad you enjoyed it. 🤘🤘
I was a sophomore in high school when this song came out, but didn't get into Queensryche until the Empire album came out in 1990 while I was in college, but when I heard this song I was definitely impressed. I went hoarse several times trying to sing along to many Geoff Tate and Bruce Dickenson songs way back when.

@@scott8319 I used to hear some of their songs on the radio in the Chicagoland area well into the 90's until the rock and metal stations died and all that was left was altrock, college rock, and oldies. Maybe we were just lucky in my area back then. My boss listens to a rock station that still plays them on occasion. It is a damn shame that the radio used to dictate how successful a band could be.

Geoff Tate has never gotten the mainstream respect he deserved. The period between 84 and about 93 he was supernatural. Those octave jumps you mentioned are kind of his trademark.
Geoff got all kinds of respect. He's up there with Halford and Dickinson as far as respect goes.

Actually, according to the video sleeve's liner notes, portions of this performance were re-recorded. Listen to Before the Storm from this Budokan [Tokyo] show; it's not included in the video, but live audio recorded from the board can be found online as an example of unsweetened Queensryche for comparison.
I've seen Tate perform with these guys literally a dozen times going back to Rage. They're the tightest and most album-perfect live band this side of Maiden. But Live in Tokyo was polished later.

I said it on another video and I'll say it again - Not enough credit goes to Chris DeGarmo for all of his harmonies that he sings along with Geoff. And such an awesome guitarist to boot!
Also his lyrics. He wrote and cowrote a lot, and really seemed to be the key to the band's greatness, looking at their body of work after he left, there's some gems but they don't compare.
Don’t forget Chris and Geoff collaborated on most of their songs, which is the reason Ryche was never the same after he retired.
Love degarmo, he always solos to suit the so g and never overplays, great song writer too.
Agreed DeGarmo was the difference maker. His writing of music and lyrics was tantamount in making the Ryche. The front man gets more credit than he deserves. That being said Tate was the greatest vocalist on the planet for a time.

Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), and Geoff Tate (Queensryche) are affectionately known at The Three Tremors. It is more than earned.
Michael Kiske of Helloween is so underrated he's just as great as the three as well.

Though a silver lining of that is he can still do all his 80's repertoire justice in his 50's and his work with Avantasia and Pumpkins United the last few years were fantastic.

I couldn't agree more! I was blessed to see them for Operation: Mindcrime, Empire/Operation: Livecrime and the 20th anniversary of Mindcrime. I saw Judas Priest in the late 80s also but Queensryche blew them away

Their album "Operation Mindcrime" is one of the pinnacles of rock music. It's impossible to suggest a particular song as they are strung together exquisitely to tell a unique story. I know you can't do a video for an entire album. But, you should sit down with the lyrics and enjoy it in it's entirety. It was a literal life changer for me.

I attended and photographed Queensryche's first EVER "public performance" as Queensryche on June 29,1983 (Portland, OR). Tate hit every note (just as recorded) and they were my favorite band for the next 10 years afterwards. Tate was unbeatable in his range, for years after. Hard to believe that was 38 years ago. How time flies.

Tate is one of my favorite singers. His range was crazy good. But for me, what made him one of the best is his emotions in his singing. He didn't just sing, he told a story. I hope one day you listen and react to Suite Sister Mary from their Operation Mindcrime album. He does a duet with Pamela Moore. They had so much chemistry and intensity together, it will give you chills up and down your spine.
@FatalPies I've been a fan of Crimson Glory/Midnight for many years. The first time I heard Transcendence, I was blown away by his voice. To say he is better is subjective. If I had to choose who I prefer, Tate is my preference.

He used to be. I saw him in 2011 with Queensryche and he was awful. He modified the songs so there were no high notes sung. It completely ruined the show for me. We had several local guys in town that could have nailed those songs.

Sitting here bawling my eyes out because now you get why Queensryche was my absolute favorite band growing up. It’s so incredible to hear you pick up on the emotion in their music in both this song and Silent Lucidity. Geoff Tate is unequaled. I would love for you to listen to “Eyes of a Stranger”, “I Will Remember” …or even “Screaming in Digital”.
Agreed re your last sentence, and ditto, but not 30 times - fewer by far but still memorable - and IMHO their best album by far is Rage For Order.
Its so incredible to be in the first several rows of a live show at the Moore or Paramount and witness him singing like that right in front of you. Just incredible. Same feeling with Ann Wilson, Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury.

I went to see Queensryche around '83 or '84. Those days are a blur. Cant remember exactly. Anyway, got about a mile away from the venue when my friends tire on his car blew out. It was outside so we could hear when the band took the stage. By the time we got the tire changed, got into the parking lot, parked, ran up the entry, ran uphill to where the seating is, got just in view of the stage, we heard "thank you, good night" followed by the lights going out.

2) Geoff's aunt was a professional opera singer.
3) Geoff's vocal coach was Maestro David P. Kyle.
Maestro Kyle was also the vocal coach for Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and Ann Wilson of Heart.

I would like to add one point
4) Geoff Tate was a Baritenor - a rare classificassion I believe. Bright and warm in his lower notes, shine and bright on the top notes. As so Roy Khan from Kamelot was too. I am a baritenor and had some classical classes. Used to take them as inspiration. The problem with this kind of voice and classification is: with time we lost all this power to reach the top notes as Geoff and Roy Khan did. They cannot sing so well in this register today.
Tate will always be the best voice to me forever! Nobody can replicate that voice! The Range, the power, the change to lower notes and coming back up is nothing that I've heard ever again!
For me it's chris cornell and layne stayley bit tate is up there for me too.

If you've never heard that sort of performance "ever again," you haven't paid attention to Queensryche as they've carried on, because Todd La Torre is just a powerful and just as gymnastic in his deliveries. I just saw them live earlier this month, and they did this song, and he nailed every bit of it.
It's not an either/or situation. I love Tate's work. But to pretend like no one else can do it is just patently absurd.

Geoff Tate in his prime was IMO the best vocalist I had ever seen and heard. I was fortunate enough to meet him right before the release of "Warning" and was just floored by thier whole performance. I saw them 7 more times right up to thier theatrical "Operation Mindcrime" tour. Just the pinnacle of what a vocalist should strive for. Range and control.
Most definitely near the top (or at the top) of all-time metal vocalists. Right up there with Halford, Dickinson & Dio.
Midnight & Warrel Dane are right up there with him.

Queen of the Ryche from their 1st EP was a warning to the other rock bands that this incredible band was ready to burst onto the scene. His voice just blew everyone away. Long time ago when the rock and metal scene was really starting to explode.
I was hoping to see her listen to Queen of the Ryche because it's a favorite of mine. The notes and composition of them are insane. So is Tate's ability to hold those notes for what seems like forever. Of course, he did it all the time and made it look effortless. I saw them live in '91. Nothing before or since has compared for me. The entire band is just out of this world talented.

That’s so cool that you picked up on Chris Degarmo’s vocals in this too...he often sings harmonies above Geoff Tates lines but it’s not always recognized. They were such a talented band.

"Take Hold Of The Flame" is a great showcase, but "I Don't Believe In Love" is probably their best song. "Queen Of The Reich" is my personal favorite, though.
Geoff Tate has one of the greatest voices in rock ever. His range, pitch, and timbre are incredible. He is a sniper for large intervalic leaps, hitting lows-to-highs with perfect precision.

My sister is a trained singer. She sang all over Europe. She is retired and in her fifties. She is not easily surprised. Hilarious. I played this for her as I have several others. Not always a big reaction. She did what you did...she said, stop. Played her keyboard to match. Played it again, said, stop. To the piano again. She was blown away. She said, I have never listened to much rock but whoever this man is you must tell me, was he classically trained? I said, I’m not sure. I said, is he good, she said, E5s like nothing and it was not falsetto it was straight up a resounding full fledged note and with vibrato. I said, you liked it? She said, yes, absolutely. Any trained singer would be. Her question? Where did a rock band find him as lead singer? LOL.
He took lessons from "The Maestro", as did a lot of famous and non-famous Seattle vocalists. David Kyle was known as "The Maestro," so yes, Tate was classically trained, and so was Warrel Dane, from Sanctuary/Nevermore, by the same teacher. And Layne Staley and Chris Cornell, Anne Wilson, Don Dokken, etc.

Yeah but Dickinson hits E5 all night long and sings way more true voice where as Tate did heavy mix .
I don't buy the true voice thing with tate. . he like King Diamond , do the " Weepy Voice," technique which is a way to do a heavy mix that sounds like true voice. He does it so much it is hard to tell the dif unless your the one doing it .

Geoff Tate actually is a baritone but worked very hard to train himself to push up into those higher notes and deliver them with power. He has a four octave range, from the A below C up to the A above high C. His aunt was an opera singer with the Cincinnati Opera and influenced his classical tastes early on. He had years of classical training and even thought he'd grow up to be an opera singer. His family was very much into music, and he played in the school band and a jazz band. As he got older, though, he discovered rock music and, as they say, the rest is history.
Oh, and you'll enjoy this fact, Elizabeth: On the subject of drinking hot liquids before a show, Geoff said in a recent-ish interview: "Yeah, hot tea pretty much keeps me going." So... time for a Tea Time with Geoff Tate?

Heard it live more than once and Tate was perfect EVERY TIME on EVERY SONG. Never witnessed anyone who could do that, including Dickinson, Mercury, and Halford. Peak Tate is hands down the greatest singer that ever graced my ears.
That particular E5 he belts out at 10:52 might be the best sounding one he's ever nailed. The first and last E5's in the song were great, but that second one might be Geoff Tate's finest moments ever recorded live.

Metal musicians are the classical musicians of modern times. They are often the best guitar players. Definitely the best drummers. There was no falsetto in Geoff's voice, just pure power that lets him push notes wherever they need to go with smooth power.
I don't believe I would consider Neil Peart, Gavin Harrison, or Stewart Copeland metal drummers, and all of them are leagues better than the average 80's metal drummer. And I'm not knocking Scott Rockenfield here, who I think is a fantastic drummer for many reasons (there's some behind-the-kit vids from soon after Todd La Torre that really showcase his talent) but I wouldn't rank him among the best.

I saw them in '89 or '90, they closed with "Queen of the Reich" which is probably the most demanding song vocally. And he was just as strong then as in the beginning.

My mom and uncle are opera trained. They made 2 albums when they were young. Geoff has 9 years of opera training. I heard him in a garage b4 they got big. He blew me away. I asked him his range when he was warming up. He said, 4.5 octaves. Wow. I believe when he sings the angels in heaven stop and listen

i had the pleasure to see geoff tate / queensryche at least 20x. they were stellar each and every magical show! one time his stage outfit was falling apart and he still gave an amazing, flawless performance. highly recommend! he's still doing stuff. if you ever have an opportunity to see geoff live, you won't regret it.
I'd recommend the song "Anybody Listening" to hear more of his range, Geoff's a very versatile singer and Queensryche has some really stellar songs from that era.

Agreed. I love Queensryche, and they were my favorite band from the moment their EP was released. Sadly, once DeGarmo left, Queensryche really suffered both musically and lyrically. Despite all of their talent, especially Tate’s otherworldly vocal ability, I think DeGarmo was the heart and soul of Queensryche.
Anything from Queensryche’s “Rage for Order” is near perfection.

'Suite Sister Mary' I am a HUGE old-school QR fan and this song is the one that STILL gives me goose bumps and I know this album verbatim and have listened to it countless times. Geoff's voice is insane throughout this entire album and 'SSM' is my all-time favorite, please give it a listen.

Off the same concert they do a song called," Roads to Madness" which is showing His lower register, and there is also "Suite Sister Mary" off of "Operation Live Crime"..basically everything Geoff and Chris with Queensryche have done is great..Because of their CREATION which comes to fruitation, we get to analyze and appreciate their musical and artistic greatness which we call music. There is no other group like this Queensryche...

It's not only Geoffs voice, give the album Operation Mindcrime a shot. The content, the stories, the band, the tightness, the proffesionalism and the art of Queensryche, they are on their own pedestal. Promised land are probably one of their best lyrical albums, so greatful for discovering this band in my youth :)
You should listen to "Suite Sister Mary", "Eyes of a Stranger" or "I Don't Believe in Love" from the Operation: Mindcrime album. Or better yet, listen to Operation: Livecrime in it's entirety. The album as a whole is simply a masterpiece and it remains my favorite album to this day.

One of the only shows I missed at the New Haven Coliseum. Saw them open for Metallica in Hartford. For Ozzy in Springfield. And multiple times throughout the Northeast. Saw Geoff on his last few tours and he's still sounds amazing
Columbus Ohio for me. We 3rd or 4th row on that same tour (KISS). They became my number 2 band of all time. KISS being my number one. Belting our Take Hold and the rest of the Warning album on many late night / early morning drives. You can't listen to this song and not pump your fist.

I wouldn't call it "little known", Queensryche's first 3 albums ("The Warning", "Rage for Order" and "Operation: Mindcrime") are Queensryche's 3 best albums, and is also a 1-2-3 combo that is very very hard to top :) (although "Empire" is probably their biggest commercial success, i hold their first 3 albums (all quite progressive) as better than the more streamlined albums that followed. Only my opinion of course :)
Rage is incredible musically and my fav as well. But don't forget besides the first 3 albums there was the ep which was insane for the time and featured the first song they wrote which was a fan favorite “the lady wore black” and another true fan favorite “queen of the reich”
queen of the reich and the lady wore black were the beginning of queensryche, I remember hearing them when they first came out, it hooked me right away. Saw them live several times with DeGarmo, after he left, so did the magic.

I had the same feeling of demise for Iron Maiden when Adrian Smith left back in 89. When he left the magic that they had going with those 7 masterpieces, from Iron Maiden up to Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (my personal favorite, also my first tour drying them live on June 10th 1988, San Diego Sports Arena) I felt that magic was broken apart. I really felt there last 3 of those 7 studio albums Powerslave, Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son that they were onto something great going on that direction
I agreed with Adrian..... however the boss didn't and when Adrian left the band I became sorta against Janek Gers for being Adrian's replacement , plus I felt justified even more not liking him as his antics on stage was not familiar with me and that of Iron Maiden with Adrian and David more or less concentrating on their chords and not displaying irrational behavior on stage
Hear In the Now Frontier is actuality a decent album. The song Hit the Black is epic

I was a sophomore in high school when this song came out, but didn't get into Queensryche until the Empire album came out in 1990 while I was in college, but when I heard this song I was definitely impressed. I went hoarse several times trying to sing along to many Geoff Tate and Bruce Dickenson songs way back when.
Old Queensryche is the BEST Queensryche! Saw them in the 80's at Long Beach Arena and Irvine Meadows. Some of the best concerts I ever attended!
