  • In this video, I react for the first time to Iron Maiden performing "Hallowed Be Thy name” (Flight 666). In this video, I analyse Bruce Dickinson’s amazing performance, explain and demonstrate his vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. This heavy rock classic sets up the perfect spooky vibes for Halloween!

Not only was your reaction my favourite, but I can honestly say, I don't think I have ever felt as much pure joy during a reaction as I did with you here. My son and I have caught Maiden twice now. The last time was the week Bruce had turned 60. He's still running around the stage like a 12 year old that's had too many E numbers. His voice is still great, he's nicknamed "The Air Raid Siren" for good reason. These are the guys who influenced Metallica, amongst others. Legends.

I saw Maiden last year, and I'll see them again next year. They haven't lost a step after 40 years.
I second the Stargazer suggestion. I don't think Dio is actually better than Dickinson. Rather, both of them are part of a metal triumvirate with Rob Halford. But he's fantastic especially when paired with Ritchie Blackmore. Stargazer is in my opinion the best Dio/Rainbow work, closely followed by Gates of Babylon (which doesn't showcase Dio as well but is probably a better Blackmore song).

The thing I love about Maiden is their willingness to just let Bruce's vocals completely carry the song during extreme lulls in the instruments. There is points in songs where the guitars and drums are so much more absent that are completely filled by Bruces performance. This song really exemplifies this too.

Loved the great reaction and analysis as always! Was lucky enough to see Maiden live in Florida in 1987. Killer show, and Bruce's vocals were ridiculous even in the middle of a long tour. Still one of, if not the best live shows I've ever seen.

Yes! Let's the Iron Maiden rabbit hole story arc begin! 😊
    Up the Irons!
I suggest checking out some early stuff as well. From the 80s or early 90s (Live at Donnington for example)

I've been to a few metal concerts, and several Iron Maiden ones, and there is nothing like the energy at IM's concerts. And my lord the man (as you say) have insain vocal control. And the absolute best interaction with the audience.

You are my fave music reactor/teacher/coach and I would be overjoyed to see you cover some of Mike Patton's music. In my opinion, he is one of the most underrated and overlooked vocalists. Faith No More was the band that put him on the map, but I love his Mr. Bungle days and would be thrilled to watch you listen to and analyze a few of their songs. Each one is a mind-boggling journey of whimsy and fun.

An Iron Maiden show was the first concert I ever went to when I was barely a teenager and they put on a hell of a show. They were my favorite band all through my "heavy metal" phase.

I seen them in Lakeland, Florida back in...1987 I think it was, 86 or 87, my memory isn't what it used to be and then seen them last Oct (2022) in Tampa, Florida. So 36 years apart. I feel blessed.

    Up the Irons!!!
    fantastic reaction, as ever!
My favourite ever Maiden track is 'Run to the Hills' - live in 1982 is as good as you'll find - first time I ever heard it, it reminded me of the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony - the same relentless, headlong, unstoppable driving rhythm and intensity - love it.
Keep up your brilliant rection, FVM.

What you have to remember about Bruce Dickinson is that he is the lead singer of one of the greatest metal bands on the planet, he is also an Olympic fencer, professor of history as well as the pilot of ED FORCE ONE, the Boeing 757, and the previous ED FORCE ONE which was the Boeing 747 Jumbo jet, he is also an author as well. A man of extreme talent.

Stumbled across this video by chance and I have to say this is the most engaging vocal reaction/analysis thing I've seen. There's something about the way you explain things which is easy to understand even for someone who knows nothing about vocal performance. (Also, I went to your celebrity voice actors video next and I laughed an entirely inappropriate amount at that one.)

I found this channel a few days ago and typically music analysis videos aren't my taste but you turn something that I used to find rather bleak into something I enjoy watching! It's helped me practice with my vocals as well, I don't usually sing but I use singing for vocal practice anyway.
But to the point I go-
    I have a song recommendation!
"Cosmic Love by Florence + the machine" the song is very moving to me and the singer looks and sings like a fairy! So I think it'd be right up your alley!
With that said, I hope you have a lovely day or night!

Up The Irons! They are steadfast, not only to their music, but also to their fans. I saw them live in Sacramento, California. Standing in the rain and mud, Iron maiden came on early, after guns n roses cancelled. They gave us a full concert, plus. Standing next to the bass cabinets, every note, that Steve played, was pounded into your soul. The weather sucked..but the experience they gave us, made it enjoyable.

Bruce's low stance is reminiscent of what's called "the horse stance" in Eastern martial arts. Not sure if Bruce's ever practiced Eastern martial arts, but he is a very skilled (and allegedly fast) fencer and was actually considered to represent the UK in the Olympics. Oh, and I often feel that I can hear elements of musical theatre in metal sub-genres such as power metal, prog metal and symphonic metal. Thanks for a very informative and - perhaps most importantly - very enjoyable reaction-analysis! 😃

The great Iron Maiden, fronted by Bruce Dickinson, metal singer extraordinaire. The man is a total vocal legend, for such good reasons. Pilots his own plane, controls the whole crowd. Heavy metal titans through and through.
