Bruce Dickinson range : 4.25 octaves According to a report published in the Daily Mirror, Dickinson has an estimated vocal range of 4.25 octaves. His voice led to the nickname "The Air Raid Siren", which Billboard states is "due to the ferocious power of his singing", although Dickinson claims it actually originated from a fan complaint.
The first time I saw Maiden was in June 1982 for the Number of The Beast tour and I was completely blown away by how good Dickinson was live. I have seen them many times since and he always brings his A-game to every show as did the band. Probably the best live band I have ever seen. He has lost a little bit of range nowadays but given his age (63), years he has been singing, and that he had throat cancer, he still sounds amazing. He is also, in my humble opinion, the best frontman in the business. He commands the stage like few can with his energy and his ability to engage the crowd and make them so much a part of the show. If you ever see them live, be prepared to be exhausted by the end of the show.
@@kingbrutusxxvi First time I saw them live was in July '82 at Anadheim. Convinced my cousin to take me to the concert, as I, too, was just 12 yrs. old. And seen nearly every tour since.
I saw them on the Piece of mind tour which would have been 1983 I believe. Sheffield City Hall. Couldn't agree more with your sentiment, the best show, period. I also saw Bruce as a solo act circa 1996 or '97 in a festival in Sweden, and great as he is, when Steve and the blokes are there right by him, you know you're in for a special treat. Great band, and they have proven themselves time and time again, now spanning 6 decades (technically), to be the GOAT in their genre. Which they very much took part in defining, by the way
Bruce is always the performer no matter his age, but his younger days the version of this song shows him really holding that note. You'll do yourself a favor by checking out that version too. Much of your commentary you added would be alleviated if you did that.
Fun fact. That was the singer actually flying the plane in the first shot. He has his commercial license. Thanks for doing this one! Legendary metal song from a Legendary band.
Oh that story gets even better. The airline he worked for at the time loaned him that plane when they were doing their first international tour and he thought he was going to get in trouble for the paint job he put on it but the airline thought it was awesome and left it on. The only problem was that since it was still in circulation as one of their jets there were a lot of people who refused to get on a jet that already had a skeleton on the side of it. Guess they thought it was bad luck. Karl Smallwood has a video about it.
As a huge Metalhead i just feel happy, that you smile at some of my favorite songs of all time. So enjoyable to see someone getting drawn into this beatiful music and enjoying themselves listening to it.
@@Shockeye00 Yes but she is a vocal coach, with respect to Bruce Dickinson his voice was at it's prime and incredible during that time, she would have been "wowed" by his live range back then. I see some people suggest a reactor reacts to a video because of it's atmosphere rather than the quality of the vocals because the viewer has an attachment to the band as a whole whereas the reactor most likely doesn't, a vocal coach wants to hear the voice first and foremost
Iron Maiden is one of my top bands of all time. I see them as more musically important than Metallica, Slayer, or Megadeth. They blended the drive of British punk with metal so perfectly. Bruce is my top vocalist of the “Big 5 of Metal” by a country mile. I’ve seen them live 6 or 7 times over my 31 years and they’ve been class every single time.
Punk??? No. There is nothing punk about this song. Iron Maiden took what Black Sabbath was doing in the early 70s and sped up the riffs while adding more virtuosity in the solos coming from legendary guitar players that were less well known such as Shawn Lane. Look Shawn Lane up. There’s nothing punk about this. It’s all metal. Metal and punk are complete opposites of what came out of the rock revolution started by the Godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath.
What's amazing is Bruce has had throat cancer and still belts out these songs! I've had the joy of seeing them live twice and honestly, i lost my voice both times! After growing up listening to Iron Maiden, hearing Bruce shout "Scrrrrrrrrrreeeeeam for me Donington!" and the crowds reaction... it sent shivers down me and i promised myself I'd see them live at Donington just so I could hear him say it. 18 years later i finally got to see them live, at Download Festival in Donington. He kept saying "Scream for me Download" and it just wasn't getting the same response... then, he finally said "Scream for me Donington!" and I swear to god the place nearly exploded. I screamed my head off, I lost my voice that night and I don't regret a single second of it! This is the band that got me into alternative music and they will always have a special place in my heart :) you absolutely must continue to react to more of their songs, you're in for a treat!!
I was at this show, damn I remember the cold waiting to be up close! I was front of the barrier for a few songs, then I dropped back so I had more room to jump around more. My good friends from Quebec, stayed up front for the whole show, and you can spot them a few times on this! Sadly one of them passed a couple years ago. He will LIVE on forever on this DvD! Only the Good Die Young...
Bruce's definitely a storyteller. For Bruce's best vocals (quality) live, chose selections from Live at Hammersmith '82. There's sort of a limited selection vs their catalog of hits, but he's still young and his voice is at his prime. Other songs to consider include The Number of the Beast, Wasted Years, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, & Aces High. There are so many hits to list, but this is a good sample to choose from during their great run of albums.
Dig how it’s visible when you get chills or are moved by certain elements. Love how engaged you become when listening. This is how I listen to music, too. So much to analyze: instrumentation, tones, techniques, performance, and the sound engineering itself. And that’s all beyond the roots; the composition and arranging.
Hey Julia welcome to the world of Iron Maiden. This is the band that got me into bass guitar when I was a mere 13 years old (summer of 89). Your journey has only begun with this band, and I'd highly recommend diving deep into the songs not just the hits. There are some incredible gems throughout their catalog. I would start with the early works of Iron Maiden when Paul Di'Anno was the singer. Granted he was only on the first two Maiden albums, but he's a huge part of the Maiden legacy (and early success). He has a very rich bluesy voice, but he could hit incredible notes (Twilight Zone is a prime example). To me one of his best vocal performances is on Strange World from their debut album. I personally love the studio version of that song with his voice because it flows so well. The Prodigal Son (from the album Killers) is rarely played live, but is an amazing track that showcases his more flowy voice. For harder edge either could give a listen to Innocent Exile (Killers) or Phantom of the Opera. I mentioned these tracks because they are the deeper cuts plus rarely if ever played live (except Phantom which is played live often). UP THE IRONS!!! ;-) PS the studio version of Hallowed Be Thy Name (from Number of the Beast) is a lot slower and Bruce really draws out the "low." in that version.
I absolutely LOVE this thumbnail! Usually Julia's thumbnails are of her looking to (the viewer's) left (her right) at the still image of the video she is reacting to. This one, she is looking at us with that gorgeous smile and her incredible smize. I don't normally like to make any comment on anyone's appearance who I don't know and wasn't asked, so this isn't really about her appearance other than her smile and smize. Julia could make every thumbnail this way in every different attire (or costume) she wears, and I'm sure many of us would be happy. Fantastic! ~Be Blessed
Don't worry about being too PC. Julia is knowledgeable, charismatic, and yes, gorgeous to look at. There it is, no shame. One can appreciate another's knowledge and expertise and still appreciate the superficial, such as good looks. Moving on to other topics 😚

Dear Julia, how is it that an Aussie doesn´t have a reaction to your national heroes, AC/DC? Granted Brian Johnsson is not your typical singer but then again it would be fub to hear what you think of him. Or to quote Angus when he first heard Brian: God he sounds like a chainsaw! Brilliant!
I wish I could go back and hear Iron Maiden for the FIRST TIME all over again. Just to be able to feel that sense of wonder one more time. So happy to see you enjoying this on its own merits, as well as musically.
I really like these written notes you put throughout the video, specially how you actually went and listened to the studio version and made some comparisons.

Hi Julia ! I merge with your vibes always and I can tell, WELCOME TO THE REALM OF METAL, I'm 47y.o. now and listen to Iron since "teen". I went to shows, and stuff. I know exactly what you felt when you shared your amazement with us Julia Nilon. One of the Grandfathers of Metal that paved the way to so many genres. Classic Maiden song- keep in mind that Bruce has to be pushing 60 in this live performance. Check out the studio version of this song and it will blow you away. One of the best (and iconic) voices in Rock/Metal history.
Everyone in Iron Maiden are completely musical gods !! And their connection with the fans are unmatched !! Ontop add Bruce what a miracle they are for many many years and STILL TOURING !! 👏 🤘👍💖
Excellent and insightful reaction. I've noticed almost every reaction to this version get really excited at the crowd participation part of this performance. That feeling is what we Maiden fans have felt for decades with this monumental band.
Not talking over the solo, very nice Julia :D That's an unwritten law, I am impressed! This is one of my favourite Iron Maiden songs, if not my favourite narrowly beating The Trooper
Had the privilege of seeing Iron Maiden in 2018, a few days after Bruce's 60th birthday. His voice was really powerful and was amazing to listen to. The whole band were incredible, that night. My son was 17 and had listened to a few Maiden tracks, but after seeing them live for the first time he was hooked. I hope we get the opportunity to see them again some day.
Thank you Julia! 🌷🌷🌷 This band is my childhood, it is my happy place, it is my refuge! The energy this band has is amazing. Being in one of there concerts it is a out of body experience! And they are way better live. Even in their bad days. Song like Fear of the Dark and The Trooper are awesome and well loved by the fans but I would recommend Revelations (from Flight 666 tour). I think it is a little underrated. ❤
Well put it this way..Dave Murray one of the founding members, just turned 66 years old yesterday! Still rocking, hell's yes!!! Up the Iron's,Happy New Year, from the Yankee Rebel!!!
The Talisman (live) is the best pick for analyzing vocals I think. I have never seen Bruce stay still for so long. So hard to sing that he cant be running around as he normally does.
I'm a massive Maiden Fan and lived through their career - it always brings me 'joy' to see young and/or never exposed to Iron Maiden and their appreciation of the talent - especially Live after performing like this for Months at a time night after night... WELCOME!!!! Up the Irons!!
I'd love to hear more about aging singers. Perhaps something on Dio or Iron Maiden where there is plenty of great videos over long periods of time to use as examples.
would love to see you react to the very same song sung live in the early 80s (dont worry the audio quality defies belief for the time) with a comparison and analysis between Bruce absolutely killing it in his prime with this mature voice where he makes many 'smarter' choices based on where his placement now lies. Despite it being the same song, it will be a fascinating look and tbh its a very different and gritty experience.
thank you! Love to see others experience what I consider to be a huge piece of my life's soundtrack. Iron Maiden live is simply one of the best I have ever seen. Great video explaining all this stuff I never even thought about :)
Up the Irons! I second the suggestion for the live version of "Dance of Death". Too many Maiden songs to list them all. "Wasted Years", "The Trooper", "Paschendale", "Number of the Beast". Maybe just a dedicate a week to the entire catalogue. 24/7.
1982 Hammersmith version of this song is arguably the best. Please go check it out for a comparison and to see how well Bruce has maintained his voice over the decades.
Julia, wrap your head around this: Bruce is in his 60's at this show, AFTER beating throat cancer, and this is the last song of a 2 hour set.......this band has been a gift to us for 40 plus years, so glad you jumped in and enjoyed their greatness!
Awesome to see a reaction to the legendary Maiden. Really hoping you'll do more of them. They were the very first band that started getting me into any sort of metal music when i was maybe 9 years old or so. Still love them now, more than 20 years later. The combination of this overwhelming performance, your excited reactions and honestly you, as a REALLY beautiful and attractive woman....is just wonderful to watch. Everytime i cry of happyness. You and this reaction video of a band i love to death, is the most wonderful entertainment for me. ❤❤❤from germany
The band has admitted they have problems playing "too fast" live. So many years of playing the songs and the energy of the live experience drive them. The studio version is much clearer.
Bruce always does the 'three cheers from the crowd' but at the same point in the song - and every single time it's perfectly timed to directly fit in before he comes back in with the vocals after a long instrumental section. Such a slick performer.
UP the IRONS! Welcome to Iron Maiden, a band that has entertained me since my teens in the 80s :) Hearing Hallowed be Thy Name live is an experience. One I have had in almost every decade!
Another beautifully joyful reaction, Julia! You didn't comment at the time, but I assume you noticed that was Bruce piloting the Iron Maiden airliner. He's a man of many talents (he used to be an olympic-level fencer too). I think the year mentioned at the start of the video was 2008 (I'm watching this on my phone so it's very small on the screen). Bruce would have been around 50 at the time (he was born in 1958).
Julia the contemporary singing specialist has by now expanded to being also a metal specialist 🥰. @Julia : did you ever think you would also move into this direction when you started with reaction videos?
Just to let you know about the quicker pace live, the drummer (Nicko McBrain, and yes that is his name) has a bad habit of getting caught up live and going at a faster pace. He's claimed that Bruce Dickinson has yelled at him more than once for it.
I randomly found this channel, but it was surprising to not see any chris cornell reaction vids. Probably the most versatile and naturally gifted rock singers of any generation. I love vocal coach reactions, and I guarantee if you never have seen him in his prime your mind will be blown! I'll subscribe in anticipation 😁✌🎤🎼🎵
The version from 1982 is the best one. Bruce’s voice has deteriorated just a tad, since his battle with throat concert. But he’s still excellent. Also, this version is…FAST!
Hi Julia, great reaction to Maiden and it is nice to see you have entered the realms of the greatest heavy metal band in the world. They started in 1975 and they are still going strong. Bruce Dickinson is one of the three vocalists the band had so far, with him been the longest in the band. He was about 51 here and I think still pretty good at it. If you here him at an earlier age you will probably notice some differences. He is considered one of the best front men and singers in metal. Up the irons!!!

So glad you got round to this, I know you dont usually do the same song twice, but its well worth watching the 1082 live version to see the difference between the two over the years... and how long he keeps that first long note. loved hearing your explanations regarding the vocals. Every single live session with these guys is as dramatic, energetic and full of audience participation. For other maiden songs, "the rhyme of the ancient mariner" will blow your mind, some of my favs are Aces high, Powerslave, Fear of the dark. but hell there is hundreds you can pick from.

Bruce Dickinson range : 4.25 octaves
According to a report published in the Daily Mirror, Dickinson has an estimated vocal range of 4.25 octaves. His voice led to the nickname "The Air Raid Siren", which Billboard states is "due to the ferocious power of his singing", although Dickinson claims it actually originated from a fan complaint.
It originated as a derogatory comment from a reviewer. Rod and Bruce turned it around, took it as a compliment, and ran with it from there.

Which they very much took part in defining, by the way
July '82 for me... Rich Stadium Orchard Park NY... I was 14
Im seeing them in September, can’t wait!
Bruce is always the performer no matter his age, but his younger days the version of this song shows him really holding that note.
You'll do yourself a favor by checking out that version too. Much of your commentary you added would be alleviated if you did that.
I'd love to see someone do a comparison of this version with the 84/85 Live After Death version.
This performance was after he beat throat cancer.
Finally some love for Iron Maiden! I was waiting for this moment! Can't wait to watch this one! XOXO from Brazil Julia! You're awesome!
The ultimate live version of this is the 1982 version, it's incredible, it's such a shame some reactors miss it that one as it's just that good
The number of the beast album,my fave was the long beach arena from 1985
I've seen quite a few reactors do the 1982 vid. I don't see too many doing this version though.
What?
Punk?!!
No way...
@@jeffreyheil9542 There is lots of punk feeling in the first two albums for sure.
All the evil seem to live forever,I still have the cassette from 1988 seventh son of a seventh son
UP THE IRONS!!! ;-)
PS the studio version of Hallowed Be Thy Name (from Number of the Beast) is a lot slower and Bruce really draws out the "low." in that version.
I really love your videos. You are one of the VERY FEW that is actually doing a proper analysis!
Younger Bruce will blow your socks off!
But I would really appreciate your reaction to Ronnie James Dio gates of Babylon.
Thanks for posting this video. I really enjoyed it! Cheers!
Fantastic! ~Be Blessed
Wtf is a "smize"?
@@DrMantisToboggan69 smiling eyes.
Don't worry about being too PC. Julia is knowledgeable, charismatic, and yes, gorgeous to look at. There it is, no shame. One can appreciate another's knowledge and expertise and still appreciate the superficial, such as good looks. Moving on to other topics 😚
First I watch because I love to see your reactions and love your insight on the voice. Second you are stunning. Thanks for your analysis. I've been singing for years and have had some training as well and understand your analysis. Thanks again and look forward to seeing more of your posts
Thank you 💕 for this reaction Julia. In the future if you decide on doing another Iron Maiden song could you please consider Dance of Death. The envivo version. Promise you won't be disappointed
So animated and the crowd participation ❤️
just popped that up too.i think he must be about 52 at the time yet jumps around like an 18 year old.great gig i dont think there is a bad song and they seem to be giving 200% at the en vivo gig.the chileans i think play their part too tho
It brings so much joy to see you enjoying the music and explain it all in your professional way. Just simply lovely.
You have got to react to the 1982 live version of Iron Maiden's "Hollowed Be Thy Name", when Bruce Dickinson was at his prime!
greetings and love from Cologne/Germany....and thank you very much for Maiden...i am a maidenmaniac since 1985...i love your reaction and analysis...i am not really in for those technical explainings. Nearly everyone sounds like a showing off and high talented music teaching roboter. You´re far away from that, wow..i had really fun, not boring at all. You´re very special. Beside that i have to commit that your beauty is in no way inferior to your knowledge. And what a soft delightful sweet voice you have, my dear..i just love listening to you..and the fact that i also learned alot from you is a wonderful welcome bonus for me...again, thank you for that...stay safe & peace......and UP THE IRONS
...ups, i nearly forgot something...if you really wanna do another maiden reaction(please..please.hihi) you should go on with "Dance of Death" live from ´En Vivo´ show in Santiago/Chile

Thank you so much... Julia for that educated and thoughtful reaction to this song 👌. Iron Maiden is my favorite band in the world wide world. Bruce Dickinson by the way is 63 years old and he just had 2 throat operations due to throat Cancer. Imagine coming back and singing once again. If you really wanna hear Bruce singing and his vocal capabilities...you have to react to the song...Tears Of The Dragon...with Tribuzy live in Brazil. Trust me you won't be disappointed 👍. Once again thank you so very much for this react. Take care your self and stay safe 🙏❤️🌹🤟🤟
Love seeing you back and covering Iron Maiden!
Hate that it's summer there, as I'm freezing my butt off in the US! :)
But loving that look - keeping me warm! ;)
The talent of this band is off the charts. They sell out all venue's , if your lucky to get in , standing room only. What Performers.
Brilliant!
The fact that he’s soooo active, on stage, and can still do what he does, is mind blowing
Julia! Loved the reaction! I am definitely following. Bruce is amazing, as are the rest of the group. Looking forward to more!
It made me so, so happy to see the smile on her face and her enthusiasm while she watched Iron Maiden.
hey pretty lady welcome to the world of iron maden. looks like you had a couple eargasms. i have been an iron maden fan since 1981. maden fan for life.
Always great to see coaches reacting to Bruce, but I really wish they would use live performance from the 80s, where Bruce was it the height of his power.
Exactly.....
Haha. Quote of the year so far “ting ta tappy thing”. Fabulous Julia! Love your dissection if the vocals, but please keep doing the drum reviews too x
My favorite thing about this is Nicko on his incredible drum kit. The human version of Animal.
Hi Julia ! I merge with your vibes always and I can tell, WELCOME TO THE REALM OF METAL, I'm 47y.o. now and listen to Iron since "teen". I went to shows, and stuff. I know exactly what you felt when you shared your amazement with us Julia Nilon. Thank you, to watch you was a delight to the soul, because your reactions as a MUSIC SPECIALIST (C.V. impressive thank you so much for noticing) You were in "Awn" this is good! And you shared with us this vibration level Julia, thank you.
Love Iron Maiden :) When you consider that this was at the end of a 2 hour show his vocal stamina is even more insane. Great reaction as always ❤️
Omg. Looking at your reaction makes my bodyhair stand. It's like I'm listening to the song for the first time again. Awesome! 🤘 You Rock! 🤘
One of the Grandfathers of Metal that paved the way to so many genres. Classic Maiden song- keep in mind that Bruce has to be pushing 60 in this live performance. Check out the studio version of this song and it will blow you away. One of the best (and iconic) voices in Rock/Metal history.
I think Nicko would be proud to hear that what he brings to the band is "Ting ti tappy ting".
More Iron Maiden is always the answer to everything. There is no better band live.
Not talking over the solo, very nice Julia :D That's an unwritten law, I am impressed! This is one of my favourite Iron Maiden songs, if not my favourite narrowly beating The Trooper
Iron Maiden + Julia = Perfection.
Iron F’n Maiden ❤️
Loads of hits incoming ❣️
And probably twice as many requests for the whole Maiden back catologue 🤘😍🤘
Agreed. Revelations is such a fantastic song.
Rime of the ancient mariner....live. Side note all Maiden must be reacted to Live
If only they had played all their songs worth reacting to (I'm looking at you, Alexander!)
Up the irons, hi from Brasil 🇧🇷 🤘🏻
I'd love to hear more about aging singers. Perhaps something on Dio or Iron Maiden where there is plenty of great videos over long periods of time to use as examples.
1000x this!
What a tune to dive into. You can’t possibly go wrong. I particularly loved the “craaaaazy dreaaaaaaam!” Part 😏
would love to see you react to the very same song sung live in the early 80s (dont worry the audio quality defies belief for the time) with a comparison and analysis between Bruce absolutely killing it in his prime with this mature voice where he makes many 'smarter' choices based on where his placement now lies.
I had tickets to see them in Perth last year but sadly it couldn't happen. Happy you're checking them out!
1982 Hammersmith version of this song is arguably the best. Please go check it out for a comparison and to see how well Bruce has maintained his voice over the decades.
I love how u analize every recomendation and enjoy it, this is especial, for u great energy and sexinest
Julia, wrap your head around this: Bruce is in his 60's at this show, AFTER beating throat cancer, and this is the last song of a 2 hour set.......this band has been a gift to us for 40 plus years, so glad you jumped in and enjoyed their greatness!
This!!!!!
Small correction. This is the 2008 show, so Bruce was almost 50 during this show.
And it was before his tongue cancer.
Wtf XD you know nothing, this concert is loooong before the throat cancer
Your description of the twang around 19:30 perfectly encapsulates why I love Iron Maiden! Awesome explanation!
Awesome to see a reaction to the legendary Maiden. Really hoping you'll do more of them. They were the very first band that started getting me into any sort of metal music when i was maybe 9 years old or so. Still love them now, more than 20 years later. Even though i mostly listen to more extreme forms of metal these days, legends like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept and a bunch of others, will always be very dear to me.

I'm watching your video again, one year later because you brought me to Iron Maiden finally. I learned to love this band in a way i can't describe it not exactly enough in english.
This reaction video from you, is something very precious and unique for me.
The amazing thing is that this was the last song of the Encore. He did this after over 2 hours of singing.
Guitarist Jancik Gers lives in my home town \m/
The band has admitted they have problems playing "too fast" live. So many years of playing the songs and the energy of the live experience drive them. The studio version is much clearer.
My dad and I used to watch this DVD all the time, it definitely takes me back.
That sustained note in the beginning is actually way shorter than in the earlier days, but time has it's way with us all.
Yeh I try to sustain it always and do manage it but then I have to go sleep for 8hrs lol
Your thorough, incisive analysis is only matched, naay, surpassed by your gorgeous accent.
Subscribed.
Just to let you know about the quicker pace live, the drummer (Nicko McBrain, and yes that is his name) has a bad habit of getting caught up live and going at a faster pace. He's claimed that Bruce Dickinson has yelled at him more than once for it.
Towards the end of some of the tours back in the day the tempo kept creeping up almost playing their songs in double time 😅
Nicko McBraIn is a nom-de-plume.
Cant believe that recording is already 14 old... 2008 in toronto.. i would love to get more information about aging voices from you Julia! Keep it up!
Examples of some other singers like Bruce who still had powerful voices at 50+: Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Lemmy Kilmister (RIP), and Rob Halford.
That's awesome but it's the wrong one. The older one is better 😉
Just LOVE the end, they do fire works & Bruce give the fans a BIG smile :-) :-)
This is why i love heavy metal. I'm so glad you finally reacted to this. Since you are into heavy metal now, I would love to introduce you to another legendary heavy metal singer, Michael Kiske (Helloween/Unisonic).

The way like you described the felling of listening iron maiden couldn't be more beautiful! It's exactly just like that. I remember me crying like a baby being in an iron maiden gig listening this song.
I would love a video about how the voice changes as people age! That's something I've always known happens just from listening to people, but it would be interesting to learn the science of it!
As always, wonderful reaction. Thank You Julia. You mentioned listening to a version from early part of the bands history. Try the live version from 1982.
