Great reaction and analysis! Vlad's background info highlighted how important Iron Maiden was as hard rock transitioned into metal. Loved that you now recognizes many of the bands that both influenced them and those who they influenced (making progress on your journey 😀). For me this song sounds closer to heavy hard rock, rather than the type of metal in bands like Metallica who were soon to follow. It's metal here just a different earlier style of metal closer to hard rock, which they have continued to develop over many years since. I have noticed that you tend to like a lot of hard rock songs (Child in Time, Kashmir, etc.) more than much of the later metal you've heard. So this song may still have enough of the hard rock elements that you like, along with the tone and expressive quality of Bruce Dickinson's vocals which you enjoyed.
This is also a well told story. I was hoping you did a full lyric read through and breakdown at the end, since as you noticed, the lyrics are deeper than the basic story. You still had great commentary on the basic story level lyrics, just was hoping you went deeper since you are really good at that (even if you had to pause and think about them). In addition to being a talented songwriter, Steve Harris is well known among many bass players and teachers, most notably for his gallop rhythm (a fast tempo eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes, particularly over multiple bars). Although his gallop is not prominent in this song, and is certainly not the only reason he is considered a great metal bass player.
The beauty of this song for me is the guitaring 🎸 because you can visualize what's going on as the solo and drum's speed up as you would be thinking as a million things go rushing through your head. The beauty of this song is you are Left wondering why is he about to get hung, which you never find out.which is quite clever. It just leaves it open for the listener to figure out. ❤👍🎸

That's ridiculous... iron maiden's maiden's first album was 1980... Heavy metal began in 1970... The New wave of British heavy metal started in 1979...

I agree about it being more 'hard rock', but I guess it's also because metal has developed into so many sub genres, some of which make this now sound quite tame. Still one of my favourite albums though.
As a fellow Classical musician, I played classical violin for 49 years until arthritis stopped me, I think that Heavy Metal is far more accessible to Classically trained musicians than many other genres because it is so heavily influenced by Classical music itself. When I sadly had to stop playing violin due to arthritis in my left hand, I took up the electric bass guitar and found myself playing far more hard rock and metal than any other genre simply because I understand it due to my classical training.

Iron Maiden are one of the few bands where i'd recommend reacting to their live performances so you can watch them at work. If you're impressed by Bruce's vocals on recording you'll be blown away by the control he manages while running around on stage.
Maiden uses E minor for a majority of their songs, which is a very accessible scale on standard guitar turnings. Little cheat for trying to play them by ear.

Putting Iron Maiden in a studio is like putting a bird in a cage. They are meant to be free. I have been listening to this song since it was first released and it is always a treat when some one points out some thing I hadn't picked up on. I almost never prefer live versions (except Styx). I've seen Iron Maiden live and it's quite fantastic, but I still say stick with the studio version, especially for this song where Bruce Dickinson does such a bang-up job in the "running low" bit. I'll be seeing them live again later this year, by the way. Amazing they're still so good after all this time.
I used to hang around with the guys in Iron Maiden. We drank and misbehaved in our local pub The Ruskin Arms in East London. I must have seen them play there at least 30 times before they made the "big" time. I even played football ⚽️ with Stevie Harris for a local amateur team (Melbourne FC) and he was as good at that as he is on the bass!!! I first met Bruce when he was singing with the band Sansom....it was obvious back then that he would eventually join Iron Maiden.....the best thing about Iron Maiden is that they have stayed true rockers and are STILL the most decent humble guys you could meet. And then do "Empire Of The Clouds" from 2015. Thank me later Ms. Amy. Then check out the literally DOZENS of amazing, epic metal tunes. I'm 56 and FINALLY got to see them twice-in 2017 and 2019. Best. Concerts. Ever. And I've got a ticket to see them this November 18th in Forth Worth! They are all in their 60s and the drummer is over SEVENTY and they put on the most amazing live shows I've ever seen. I saw my first concert in 1984 BTW. You MUST take a deep dive in to the Maiden oeuvre. Up the Irons Amy! Enjoy the ride. 🤘

The live version of Rime of the Ancient Mariner, in my opinion, embodies everything that Maiden are. Superb storytelling, great visuals, atmospheric, nuanced, first class song writing, operatic, galloping drums and bass and crystal clear vocals.
@@dsmith9626 I think Empire of the Clouds would be the better track as much more going on musically than ancient mariner. Mariners a good place to start though, and then Empire of the clouds which I think will be a really interesting reaction to, with the building of the track and S.O.S 'stabs' etc.

Ironmaiden, where the long haired youth from the 70's till today learn the classics of literature, and riffs, and quite frankly that to be an intelligent learned person is a think we should all strive for. Harris is a bass and a lyrical legend, and Bruce Dickenson is one of the smartest and wisest people you'll ever meet.

Iron Maiden is definitely a metal band for classical musicians! This song is designed to work live with audience interaction. If you watch a live performance of it, you'll see why it is structured the way it is. I'm so glad Amy enjoyed the studio version though! 😃
He holds those notes live in the early days. Check out the same song live in 82. It's amazingly accurate. You don't have to react to it if you don't want to but it's a treat.

Hallowed Be Thy Name is a masterpiece. I first heard it over 40 years ago, and after all these years it still feels amazingly fresh. The musicianship is incredible, and the words have an impressive level of humanity, thoughtfulness, and sorrow. Every time someone discovers this song and is mind blown by it, it makes my day.
I can still remember buying the vinyl in 1983. Such a great LP 🤘🤘

I usually have trouble with a 30min + dissertation on a song less than 10min, but seeing Amy's appreciation of the composition as a whole made this time well spent. Fantastic reaction Amy!
They always have harmonized guitars. And a solo for each guitarist when written. Sometimes the solos played apart, after each other or the same time. The bassist is the leader of thebband and primary writter. Most there songs are about history or literature.
I think they do a call and response type thing; at least it sounds like this to my ears.
My goodness, I have so much respect for musicians, you listened to 4 min. Of that song and said I think this is what the boys were doing...on a HARP.. You are a true musician, and you get the hard rock feel, welcome to the Family, and thank you Maam.

Bruce being one of the favourite singers of Elizabeth Zharoff from the Charismatic Voice, seems you like him too.
Love this song. Bruce is a magnificent storyteller and the guys are still so tight on stage after all these years. I have been fortunate to speak to Steve and Janick and they are so down to earth.
On the solo's they split the majority of the solo's between the three amigos, Dave, Adrian and Janick, occasionally 1, Wasted Years for example, then sometimes 2 sometimes 3. All 3 are terrific musicians.
I would recommend looking at live performance of Dance Of Death (En Vivo!)
Quite a fortuitous combination with Steve being a magnificent story writer, and Bruce being a magnificent storyteller.
I saw Bruce Dickinson's speaking tour recently (well, must be two years ago now), and you're absolutely right. He told us stories from his career and it was marvelous entertainment. I didn't expect him to be so good at humor.

If you go back and listen carefully, you could hear Steve Haris' unique "hammering" base style. This is also Iron Maiden signature threats.
What Vlad forgot to mention: This album (The Number of The Beast) was first album with Bruce Dickinson as lead singer (THE SINGER of Iron Maiden) and last with Clive Burr at drums.
The bell chimes the exact amount of times the British did as it tolled before they hung you.

Excellent! I'm glad you liked it. I've seen this song surprise people with it's accessibility: "This is Iron Maiden?!" I was worried you were going to react to the live version, which seems to be a popular thing to do. I know some really like his performance, but I think Dickinson sounds much better in the studio.
I was trying to figure out which Iron Maiden songs might be good for you in particular, for a followup reaction, and I think "Alexander the Great" might be a good one to do.
If I had to recommend a live performance of this, I'd honestly point to the 1982 Hammersmith concert. The song is still fresh in the band's repertoire, and Bruce is in his athletic prime on stage. The only difference between Hammersmith and the album is that the band feels slightly more familiar and comfortable with the song. There's a slight stiffness on the album that's smoothed out on stage.

What I hear in this song is 3 simultaneous journeys - The physical journey from the cell to the gallows presented in the inexorable forward motion you hear in the rythm section from the drums and the bass -- the wild swinging of the mental journey back and forth from one extreme to another in the swinging pendulum like melody in the guitars, and the Spiritual journey our unnamed convict travels - from nervous anticipation to absolute terror to anger to acceptance and finally to a place of such serenity in the knowledge that he's going "beyond to seek the truth" that as he mounts the gallows, he's joyfully singing The Lord's Prayer at the top of his lungs - "YEAAHHHH! Hallowed be thy Name!"
It really is such a great song, easily in the conversation for "Greatest Metal Song Ever Written."

@@user-tf6vq9tz6b I would say that is a matter of taste. The above mentioned songs are my favourites too. But I have periods when I just can't stop listening to Maidens early years. I love how we can enjoy over 40 years of musical evolution from one band. I wish we could have at least 40 more. Up the irons!
Oh and wow, thank you for pointing out the similarities to The Moldau. I had never heard that before so I went to look it up after you mentioning it and you are spot on about the similarities
And now I want to hear a full version of this using the harp, accompanied by more strings. Might still need Bruce, but that'd be beautiful.

This is the first video I watched of yours. Iron Maiden (one of my top 5 favorite bands) and classically trained musician caught my eyes, but the depths of analysis and articulaticulation of your thoughts captivated my attention the whole way through the video. greetings and love from Germany again. I´m a MaidenManiac since 1985 and i just watched your react video here for the third or fourth time. You´re such an amazing person and an awesome musician. Outstanding and so beautyful as you started to play that beginnig part on your Harp. And then i notice your comparson to the classic composion "The Moldau" for the first time. Dont know why i didnt catched it before. I heard The Moldau before, but couldn´t remember the similarity you talked bout. So i checked it and i was amazed by your knowledge, especially that, cause its only these few notes, this very short melody. And you were absolutly right, thats incredible. I have to say i love and i listened alot of classic music for a long time. The strings/the violine is probably my favorite, beside other strings like the Cello, the Harp. I adore Paganini, der Teufelsgeiger and Franz Liszt, crazy lunatic musicians for their time, right...and to be honest, i really believe that Richard Wagner was the founder of Heavy Metal. This hardness, these dull and hammering tones of the great timpani, the drama in his compositions. All these are something like the predecessor of heavy metal, don´t ya think so. Sorry, i drifted away a bit. Well, i didn´t check the original The Moldau, but i knew that our german Metal band "Accept" has played this composition live on stage at the RockHeroFest in Kemerovo, Russia 27.07.2019, together with the Lux Aeterna Orchestra (Novosibirsk). Blows me away everytime. Its worth to react to it. I mean i would love to see you reacting to that Classic mixed with Metal. I´ll send you the link to this performence anyway, and hope i get lucky....one time finally, at least. However, have a peaceful sunday, my dear & stay safe

When you get familiar with it, you can really tell the difference between Dave Murray's and Adrian Smith's guitar solos. It's one of the things I enjoy the most about listening to Iron Maiden.
Loved the way you´ve reacted to Maiden. They were my introduction to Heavy Metal 38 years ago. After you´ve done "The Wall", it´s time to do another whole album. "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" is an album that has extraordinary storytelling from start to finish. Many Maiden Fans don´t like this album because they´ve used too much Synthezisers, but i would guess that is a sound quality, you will like in particular. Greetings from Germany

Bruce has a background in Opera and Classic music, maybe it's the reason that you liked his voice. He uses a lot of classical resources in the way that he sings.
Bruce doesn't have any background or training in opera or classical music.
he has said he had no music lessons and influences were such as deep purple. he later read books on singing. but he says in his book and interviews no opera. he has said he likes to tell stories
Recently read his autobiography. No mention of opera/classical music at all.
If you like chimes and bells, Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" has one going throughout the song.

It's amazing how well Bruce makes Steve's lyrics work. I've heard him complain (mostly jokingly) how Steve doesn't write his lyrics with any thought on how easy they would be to actually sing, and Bruce just has to power through them.
Well, when you listen Maiden a lot, like me, you CAN distinguish the solo styles between Dave Murray, with his legato style, Adrian Smith, with his bluesy style, and then, when Janick Gers was added to became a trio of axes, his random style
That's true. Though to be fair, the differences in HBTN are pretty small, esp. in the studio version, and are a lot more prominent in other songs. Except for that little bluesy vibe Adrian sneaks in right at the beginning of his part of the solo, they keep it quite similar stylistically here.
Thank you for typing that out, so I didn’t have to. I like that she did take note of it in the sheet music. Of course, it wouldn’t be as apparent since she’s just being introduced to the band. The more you listen to them, the more you really _hear_ them.

When I heard this song for the first time some 10-12 years ago, what stroke me was the "mental picture" it created. From the opening verse, I saw everything and got transported to the story. I love when that happens. Both lyrics and music tell a clear tale across the song.
First off, thank you so much for doing this song! Loved the way you broke it down. I went through puberty with Iron Maiden, and most of High School and College. I think when you are younger, music makes a deeper impression on you. Whatever the cause, they are still one of my favorite bands of all time. I always thought, you might be able to find a better guitarist in one band, or a better drummer in another, but NO other metal band had as good a combination of all members than Maiden did. Steve Harris, the bass player, was quite a composer, too, and you can hear classical influences in most of their songs. Thank you again, I really enjoyed that, and it brought back some great memories.

Likely already mentioned, but if you choose to revisit this song, I strongly recommend the live version from Hammersmith 1982. If you were impressed by the studio version, wait until you see and hear this performance.

Iron Maiden is just the best Metal band of all time. The consistent quality of their nine first albums, NINE!! nine f..cking full albums in 12 years, about an album per year, is unmatched. They lived basically composing, recording, touring and repeating with no breaks for more than a decade with no reduction on quality. Thanks for gifting us that.
That was truly fascinating ! You breathed more light to a song, I´ve been listening to over 40 years and which may be one of the songs I´ve listened more than anything. Glad you enjoyed it and I´m 110% sure, that if you do more Maiden someday, you should do and will love Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, now there is a story ! I think it is a masterpiece which turns Samuel Taylor Coleridge´s poem wonderfully to music, a prime example of a song where Bruce tells the story by singing each word like it poet.
Thanks so much for this reaction, Amy! Iron Maiden has been such an important band for me, since high school (I'm now 55). Maiden is one of the most literate of metal bands, both musically and lyrically. They are driven by that busy rhythm section, and the guitar solos are like songs within a song.

Fear of the Dark, Rhyme of The Ancient Mariner & Phantom Of the Opera are songs you should definitely try, especially their live performances!
A year or so ago, I saw them do Aces High with a full-size mockup Spitfire flying over the stage. Blown away by the stage presence. Watching a recording of a live song just doesn't do it justice. I'll see them again later this year.

Heavy Metal is based on classical music. Hard Rock is based on Blues music, especially British Electric Blues.

My father was a huge classical music lover, I listen to Metal, and every time I listened to a metal song, my father used to mention references to classical music pieces. And great you mentioned the Moldau by Smetana (which is one of my favorite pieces.....yes thanks to my father now I like to listen to classical music too).
When was a kid in the 80's my neighbor was a big maiden fan. I loved the music and still do. Also loved the cool album art. Go eddie

It's really great to see someone who is real educated in classical music surrender such compliments to a song I grew up listening. I feel kind of being vindicated by watching your reaction because when I was a kid I just can´t understand why this kind of music was treated like garbage and pure noise. When I heard Iron Maiden and thing like this - or Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath - I feel like something great was achieved musically talking and it's great to see your reaction because it prove that I was right and the most of people was blind to see that. The world is changing and the people is more open to experience heavy-metal as it really is and the ways always feel about it - not just hairs and drugs and that stuff, you know, but a genuine style of music which has it's own way to share stories and subjects that no other musical genre have to.
