Its the greatest metal song ever written in my opinion. The live hammersmith version is incredible.
The greatest metal song of all time is very hard to determine. I'd actually pick 5. This one isn't among them. 1) Warriors of the World United - for message, 2) Walk - for thrashing the place up, 3) Crazy Train - for epicness, 4) Cry of the Nihilist - for novelty, 5) For Whom the Bell Tolls - fro how cool that song is. Together (epicness, coolness, novelty, message, energy) these songs embody the essence of metal. It's just my opinion tho.

I love how he's playing along with it on the piano figuring out the chords as they go. That's actually really cool.
It's like 4 chords in the whole thing. Anyone musically educated could work this song out in one listen. It's one of my all time favourite songs but it's very very simple.

I got this album in 1986 when a girl asked me what I wanted for xmas in front of the "cool kids," and I wanted to be cool too, so I said "The latest Maiden record," and that's what I got, and 40 years later I'm wearing their t-shirts daily.

Yes, Eddie is the mascot for Iron Maiden.
This is one of the greatest heavy metal songs ever written I think. This album is certainly one of the most important and influencial of our time.
I have seen Maiden 33 times to date after this years tour here in the UK. I am 52 and have been a fan for over 40 odd years they just got better and better with age and are the best live Metal band on the planet. I cant think of another band with that many best of the best musicians in it they are all utterly at the top of the tree.
When I first heard this song, I predicted that it would still be listened to in a century. 40 years have already passed and millions of people still listen to it. Following my prediction, I will be dead before this song would be forgotten.
As will your children, grandchildren, and their children. Sounds sort of dire, but it is ment as a compliment to your foresight.

One of the things I love about Judson's reactions is that he often seem caught between analyzing the music and just grooving out
“If there’s a god why does he let me go?” With great bands like Maiden and Rush, the music serves the story. Music accentuates the “purpose” of the song. Humans fundamentally need stories. Music, when done right, can convey stories quickly and to an extremely deep level. I should add that NWOBHM is a huge rabbit hole very worthy of diving headlong into. So many magical albums.

I also bought the first Iron Maiden album from a record store after seeing the cover. I had no idea who they were but Eddy was instantly iconic and the art work hooked me in.
I was mesmerized by the Maiden font. I was 12 visiting family in Europe in ‘82 and this older teen had “Iron Maiden” in the correct font spray painted on the motor cover of his Lambretta. No idea who they were but that font did it!!!!
i first listened to this song 22 years ago. i have been into uncountable extreme metal genres n i must have listened to more than thousands n thousands of metal music. and if you asked me a metal masterpiece. i ll say this song. I can't express in words. the meaning, the suspense, the lyrics, the riffs. its a phenomenon.

Iron Maiden was the band that pulled me into metal. Before that it was all classic rock.. Jimi, Zeppelin, Van Halen... When I saw the video for Stranger in a Strange Land... That was it.... Metal head. Even played in an Iron Maiden Tribute band out of Pittsburgh PA in the early 2000's

I bought a bass at 17 and learned to play bass by listening to Steve Harris on cassette. There was a lot of stopping and rewinding! The first song I learned right through was Revelations

Maiden will always be in my top 3… with Judas Priest and Sabbath.
Even the early Maiden with Paul Di’anno was kick butt metal and I feel Paul never got the credit he deserved because Bruce Dickinson was just so damn powerful and great; but Paul could sing circles around a ton of bands frontmen 😏

Maiden does not get the recognition they deserve. Musically and lyrically no one competes.
Loved the grin as Judson quickly picked out the main riff at the end. Makes it look effortless.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner off the Live After Death album. It's awesome live. Went to a show melting and they did this song. The background was old pirate boat. So glad to see someone react to the studio version. Everyone reacts to the live version of this which is dumb, for most people the studio version is the definitive one, and they spend too much time focused on the stage antics of the bands vs the music
Maiden it’s a live band and basically 99,9999% of Maiden songs sounds better live than studio.
Iron Maiden needs the stage to tell the full story of the songs, that’s why people mostly reacts to live versions.

@MigMart75 I think they do it because they are just copying all of the other reviewers who did it, the first few did the live version so the others imitate them.
Most music reviewers aren't genuine BTW. They just go on there and pretend they always like the song so people are happy. So there is a lot of grifting and imitating.
Good reviewers like Lost In Vegas have no problem telling you if they don't like something. And I've notice they don't copy all the other reviewers either.
Anyway I don't agree that they sound better live. I've seen them live. They ARE very good live, but very few bands really sound better live than a proper studio recording without crowd noises and other nonsense.

That's exactly how I found Iron Maiden. When Maiden Japan came out, I thought it was the coolest album cover with Eddie and a samurai sword!! UP THE IRONS!!!!
I was trained in classical music, Ive played classical violin snd Scots and Irish fiddle for 47 years now. I also play electric bass.
I didn't have much interest in 'pop' (amplified) music until I came across the new wave Heavy Metal in the late 70s and prog rock like Queen
It was a very easy segway from classical music to bands like Maiden because the structures, style, vocals and most importantly, instrument and vocal virtuosity inherent in classical music are all present in Metal.
This year in June I saw performances of the Verdi Requiem on Saturday night and on Wednesday I was at a Maiden gig... what a week that was!
Just had a crazy thought. Have you ever thought of doing a complete album reaction? For example, since we’re on Iron Maiden today, Live After Death, of which this song is on.
We’ve discussed it and definitely want to do it. Finding the time is the only hurdle we’re up against at the moment.

Got into Iron Maiden when Powerslave was brand new.. and was my graduation from Black Sabbath, Dio, and Motley Crue. From there I got into Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, and several other bands along those lines. By 86 I heard Metallica for the first time. By 88 I had gotten into the big 4 plus King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. The wife got into bands like Creed and Godsmack so those got added in on the backside. That was my core grouping of bands that I listened to up until about 2010 or so.. when I started watching reaction channels and began to discover new bands like Meshuggah, Jinjer, Gojira, and others.
Through it all I do not believe I have ever heard a bad Iron Maiden song.. even counting the two albums with Blaze. Have to be in a certain mood to fully appreciate those two albums.
I think he would enjoy Empire of the Clouds.
The two Blaze albums are excellent and ten times better than the self-indulgent nonsense they put out recently

@@matje6978 Just for you I listened to it. Self-indulgent nonsense. Time changes that are purely there 'because it's Maiden'. Bruce's vocals don't fit most of the song. The lyrics are ridiculous. Drums out of place. No passion, no heart. Oh and the production is awful. Sorry, but no.

As much as I'm enjoying the Iron Maiden, I feel that Deep Purple's "Child in Time" might be a really good one to do. That live version with John Lord's keyboard solo is pretty epic.
They did "Child in Time" last week 😊. But not the live version.

Loved hearing a bit of Hallowed on piano, the inspiration behind this song comes from another song called life's shadow by a 70s UK prog rock band called Beckett, years later a legal case was brought against maiden for lifting lyrics from Beckett's original song.
Strange how the original songwriter took over 30 years to bring this action.
Maiden eventually settled out of court.
True but this song doesn't sound anything like the Beckett one, though there's those couple of lines of lyrics lifted. Although there is another Maiden song many think does sound like the Beckett one. HBYN still a classic metal song though.
Yes the second half of life's shadow is definitely nomad. Obviously Beckett was a big influence for Steve Harris as they covered Rainbows Gold by Beckett and from memory was on the b side to 2 minutes 2 midnight
