Originally Maiden was 5 members...2 guitarists - Dave Murray, Adrian Smith (sort of because there were also earlier incarnations of the band and other members...but these are the main guys). Then in 1990 Smith left the band and Janick Gers joined the band (long hair blond guy who is very animated and runs around a lot). Then in 1999 Adrian Smith came back to Maiden and they kept Gers and went with the three lead guitarists - Murray, Smith, and Gers

Adrian smith left the band in late 1989. After the Seventh Son of a Seventh son tour in 1988 was over with. Maiden had a break from the band. Smith did a solo project called ASAP. Was unhappy with the Musical direction the band was taking. Left the band during the preproduction off the No prayer for the dying album. The one who replaced Smith was Janick Gers. Made fame by playing into Ian Gillan his solo band called Gillan in the early 80YS, And later on with helping Bruce Dickinson out with his first solo album. Gers joined in early 1990. Dickinson left in 1993 after the Fear off the dark world tour. Both Smith and Dickinson came back into Iron Maiden somewhere in 1999. Instead off sacking Gers, Maiden opted to move on from a 2 Lead guitar band and create a 3 piece guitar band.(called "The Three Amigos"), so they would be able to expand on the guitar melody and writing part. they first did a short tour in 1999 to celebrate Smith and Dickinson were back in the band. Early 2000 the band created Brave new World. the first album as a 3 piece guitar band and with Dickinson back. Played the Rock in Rio festival in 2001, As the last show off the Brave new world tour 250.000 people were there. that summs it up mostly.

Janick played on Bruce's first solo record, Tattooed Millionaire, which was more of a hard rock record that anything he'd done in Maiden. There's a great cover of All the Young Dudes on it. After Adrian left, Bruce suggested that Janick join. When Bruce left in '93, Janick stayed with Maiden. Adrian and Bruce came back together for two of his solo records, Accident of Birth (1997) and The Chemical Wedding (1998). By this time, Maiden were looking to move on from their singer Blaze Bayley, as the two records they released were did not live up to the previous albums. I believe that the idea was first mentioned by Maiden's long-time manager Rod Smallwood, just exploring the possibility. The offer was made to Bruce and Adrian to come back together. Steve and Bruce met in an empty pub, with Rod along. When asked about Janick's status, Steve said the band would have three guitarists if Adrian was agreeable. No one was getting fired.

Bruce is a modern Renaissance man. He is a pilot (flying 737's, 747's, 757's, and other aircraft), a world class fencer (back in the 80's he would coordinate the tours around his fencing championships and practice during sound checks), an entrepreneur (launched an aircraft maintenance business in 2012), he's a T.V. and Radio host, a writer (with multiple books a scripts under his belt), an actor in his early years and very theatrical on stage, at one point a college professor, he helped to create the Trooper beer. He is also cancer survivor.
And when he has some free time, he is the lead singer for one of the greatest metal bands ever. Bruce is a living legend. Up The Irons!

This song live in a big audience, it doesn’t get any better than that. It really makes everyone go mental. Just hear the crowd sing those guitar/vocal melodies, everywhere they play it. Being part of that crowd, that it is the essence of metal to me. The interaction between the band and the crowd through that song is mind blowing.

You were watching En Vivo from 2011.
Adrian Smith returned to the band in 1999. Janick Gers, the man who replaced him in 1990 (the "tall blonde guy") remained so the three guitar lineup was formed. The apex concert of that reunion era was Rock In Rio 2001 where one of the best Fear of The Dark versions was recorded. You were probably thinking about that performance.

Bruce and Adrian both came back to the band in 2000 with the album Brave New World. Instead of firing Janick Gers, they decided to keep him and have three guitars from then. Awesome! Maiden are one of the best (if not the best) musicians that balance heaviness with a lot of melody, even the heavy parts are melodic, and known for the transitions (often) like you experience an interesting journey, their songs structures are great, meaningful, emotional and unique, their baselines are prominent and great, their melodies are great. In general, they are unique, melodic, innovative, heavy, emotional, beautiful, powerful at the same time! Steve Harris is influenced by 70’s progressive rock a lot and hard rock, like Wishbone Ash (Argus), Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Genesis, YES, etc.

It’s song from 92’ album so the reasons are obvious. But because fans were so upset of that, the band decided to put this song on setlist. You heard Rime of the Ancient Mariner recorded on that tour. Progressive/melodic heavy metal is probably a good description of Iron Maiden through the decades.
Always one HELL of a live show.
The later albums (i believe from Dance of Death in 2003, might have been later) have been recorded with most of the takes being the whole band recorded at the same time to get that real tight band feeling and with a bit of the live magic.
They really are a live band, if you can catch a live Maiden show... DO IT! It's just such a whole-stadium feeling and you'll go back and appreciate their whole VAST catalog of albums with even more appreciation.

Hearing your fingers dance out that tune on the ivories, so embedded in so many of our minds as the kickarse anthem of our youths...was just delightful & sublime & all of the other pretentious, multi-syllabic adjectives...! 🌝 ...+ experience.
It was a delight to hear... I know, it was surely just a simplified ditty to you...but the piano is such a grand (pardon pun, not intended), gorgeous instrument...
I rue the day I quit as a child (but, of course!🤦‍♂️) - as was forewarned by mine wise elders..- forsaking the , then unappreciated opportunity of private lessons on my fathers medium-sized (which was actually enormous!), shiny, black, grand piano...for the allure of the electric guitar - a 2nd hand Stratocaster copy, in my case, bought with 70 of my hard earned lawn mowing and factory painting dollars...
I certainly cant regret teaching myself the guitar - my greatest , perhaps only! , hobby still, some 30 odd years later..
But the melancholic lament that besets mine heart at the mournful sounds of a piano...playing through the chords & melody of a particularly poignant passage...
    'Tis without peer nor parallel!
'Tis quite the emotive instrument, and - in the right hands - can elicit a long-winded, ponderous, perhaps pretentious - extended rant..
...but a pleb who fancies himself a fancy pants! ☺️
    'Tis I!
    ........... 'Tis I !!! 🌝☺️😄🤣

Love your videos and chemistry guys and most of the metal bands that you play. :)
I think Judson might like Cult of Luna, they use 3 guitars and keyboard with some parts all have individual roles, very long songs, but the vocals are on the harsh side.
Might wanna start with the song A Better Call which features also singer Julie Christmas.

I thought the intro was too "happy", good that Judson put a little bit of Halloween to the end ! Fear of the dark, well, I´ve probably heard it too many times in these 30+ years after release, good song, but worn. For me that is. But never too worn to watch reactions of first timers !!! And that En Vivo live is every time so impressive, thank you Chile !

Iron Maiden were the first to bring back former guitarists, the German Speed/Power/HeavyMetal band later repeated it and are still doing it, including all former singers, that's what distinguishes Iron Maiden from Helloween in that respect

It's a great video to get a sense of a great experience of a great IM concert. However, I think a classical musician should first react to hearing the album version of this great song.

Great reaction! But there are much better Iron Maiden songs to be analyzed such as: Phantom of the Opera (from the album Live After Death), Remember Tomorrow, Killers, The Prisoner, 22 Acacia Avenue, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Children of the Damned, The Number of the Beast, Where Eagles Dare, Revelations (from the album Live After Death), Flight of Icarus, To Tame a Land, Cross-Eyed Mary (Jethro Tull cover), Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Powerslave, Flash of the Blade, The Duellists, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Aces High, Losfer Words (Big 'Orra), Alexander the Great, Caught Somewhere in Time, Wasted Years, Stranger in a Strange Land, Infinite Dreams, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son...Greetings from Brazil!!!

I highly recommend 22 Acacia Avenue from Number of the beast album. Both the album version and the 82' Hammersmith version is fantastic!

Iron Maiden was the 'entry point' to my aural abuse, that is metal. Haha!
I believe Bruce Dickinson was opera-trained, and it shows, if true.
I'm glad you love longer format songs, I would love for you guys to react to Between the Buried and Me's "Specular Reflection" or "Never Seen/Future Shock." I know you weren't too sold on Selkies but that was BTBAM's earlier work. The main reason I love this band so much is because of their constant improvement and trying to explore different genres in their songs.
BTW, these songs have little or no sweep arpeggios, Judson. Haha!
    Also, "Great... Measures..." :D
