Operation Mindcrime is absolutely one of those "desert island" albums. Every single song a masterpiece. Up there with Master of Puppets, Back in Black and The Wall, for me. Still go back to it from time to time. Awesome musicianship at every facet.
DeGarmo and Wilton were so underrated. They were an awesome guitar duo. I know all good things come to an end, I wish Queensryche would reunite and write/perform music like what they did on Mindcrime and Empire. Great stuff.
Queensryche: Man, I really miss this band in its original form. I wish Geoff and Chris D. and the rest of the boys could work out a way to make one more record, do one more tour.
Yes, one more record with the original line up! The question is what would it sound like, and would it be accepted and appreciated? Rage for Order, Mindcrime, Empire, and Promised Land, in my opinion, would be difficult to measure up to.
Yea, you're right. I've heard interviews from him before where he didn't sound at all interested and was kind of dismissive or condescending. I noticed he never mentioned Eddie Jackson when talking about the other guys. His bass parts are a pretty big part of the Queensryche sound.
When The Warning album came out....I was hooked. Tate had a voice that would make your jaw drop in complete amazement. Everyone talk about Operation Mindcrime wich is incredible.....I saw that tour.....but The Warning, Rage for Order, Empire....and Queensryche that includes The Lady Wore Black are all exceptional pieces of work. I used to order a pizza and watch the whole Tokyo concert...it was 1984 I think. I taped the whole show from MTV so I watched it like 100 times. The Warning is a masterpiece, way before Operation Mindcrime, that brought the band to a larger audience
Geoff tate amazing vocalist I only seen them once they opened for Metallica at that time they were touring for operation mindcrime at that time I was not a fan never gave them a chance they were amazing a true fan after that
Wow.. just wow. I can't say that I have ever listened to a more humble and real interview . What a class act. Operation Mindcrime is the defining concept album for Heavy Metal music. Thank you Geoff and Queensryche for all that you have given to us.
This was a really great interview. Geoff was very humble and honest. He didn't seem bitter or spiteful. He seems very comfortable with himself and his extreme accomplishments. Well done.
Me, from 14 years old to 52 years of age and every day I jam out to Queensryche from the original line up. Rarely do I listen to the newest line up with La todd, he's not the voice of Queensryche, although he does sing good but he just isn't Geoff Tate.
One of the greatest rock/metal singers of all time. The original lineup of Quensryche was such a strong influence on my musical journey as a guitar player. The musicianship was great but what made them special was the songwriting. It would be awesome to see them back together again.
And let's not forget bout Eddie Jackson on the bass, one of the most underrated players. I have nothing but mad respect for these guys, and even after my 35 years of playing guitar........can't touch these guys
I have no idea where Geoff's mind was at 11/12 years ago, or the rest of the band, but he seems like a completely different person nowadays, such a positive person and someone who really is a pleasure to listen to.
I think this interview actually told a lot of that story if you read between the lines. Chris was a MAJOR part of the band. Chris and Geoff were the primary creative force. Geoff has always marched a little more to the beat of his own drum. More varied musical tastes. The first one with the desire to work on original material. Geoff confirmed here that Chris was somewhat of a band leader for them. I feel like he probably served as the bridge (no pun intended, but happy coincidence) between Geoff and the rest of the band. The middle-ground. The most tastes in common with Geoff while sharing more tastes with the rest of the guys at the same time. After Chris left, they'd not only lost one of their primary creative forces but also a band leader. As Geoff was always a passionate songwriter he stepped up regarding the creative side and probably attempted to steer the ship a lot himself as well. As time went on, decisions and directions gained less and less traction (consider one of the most appreciated post-Chris albums was probably Tribe and Chris was back in the mix for that one). Then they went and put out Dedicated to Chaos. It tanked. Hard. Far more than any other release. Geoff and the rest of the guys just weren't gelling. I feel that Geoff got scapegoated a lot for that failiure of that album. The truth was the guys just couldn't work together anymore. They had struggled to since Chris and it was a miracle they hard fought to keep it going for so long. All of this just came to a head following DtC. The split was the best thing to happen to them. The only thing I have never agreed with is the continued use of the Queensryche name. Queensryche died that day. Hell, it could easily be argued they died back when Chris left and they were fighting for their lives ever since. The rest of the guys formed a great unit with Todd and under any other name (personal opinion) could have been a fantastic and far more respectable metal band. The biggest thing being the band finally saw eye to eye on things. Geoff is great now with what he's going. The others have their thing going strong. I feel if they were to "reunite" at any point it would HAVE to be a complete reunion. Chris included. A single, final album. The last album to bear the Queensryche name would be my dream but a single gig or mini-tour of a very small number of select shows would be the more feasible. I don't see it happening though unfortunately. Chris is done. Especially on the touring front. Without Chris it's just not gonna happen.
@@j800r_aswell Nice perspective, and yeah I agree with your summary --- your point about Chris being done and not wanting to tour is spot on, but I totally could see these guys maybe one day here getting together the original lineup just for a roundtable retrospective interview or conversation and perhaps that even leading to a Seattle area concert. Or maybe the existing QR lineup inviting all of the former members to a show for a special one-off guest thing like the Scorpions did with their old members in Wacken a few years back. One can hope anyway.
The motivator to get back together are the fans Geoff. The original lineup means a lot to so many fans, including myself. Ryche has been my top band since 1984. I'm an old man now but watching and listening to Tate, DeGarmo, Wilton, Jackson and Rockenfield would definitely be on my bucket list!!
My introduction to Geoff and Queensryche was seeing them live opening for Kiss Animalize tour in Salt Lake City February '85, I was mesmerized by the sheer power of Geoff's voice! The music was tailor made for me as a Maiden and Priest fan, I went out literally the next day and bought The Warning and was instantly a Queensryche fan, and obviously I still am, of all the guys!
Saw that tour in Philly. Its funny when Geoff mentions all the bands they opened for they show pics of each band except KISS. What gives? Does Gene want like $12.50 every time its shown? Lol
@Scum Bagge Neither that Tool nor that Queensryche album are in the same league as Dark Side and Hemispheres. Though I will take Mindcrime all day over Lameralus.
Keep 'em interviews coming. I started a new life in the U.S. in 1995 and I always say I was late 10 years. I wish I had arrived here in 1985 to experience the prime time of MTV and all things Hard Rock. QR was the second show I went to see just a couple of months after I came to the U.S. This band has a special place in my heavy metal heart. I recently bought the 1984's live in Japan version of "Take Hold of the Flame". What a treat! I hope you interview Chris DeGarmo next!
I love these videos. I just can't get enough of listening to old rockers telling stories about their past, and it doesn't matter if the rocker in question is someone I personally follow or not. QR isn't one of those bands I have listened to a lot, and reading the comments tells me that there is a lot that I'm (blissfully?) unaware of. That said, sometimes it's nice to just listen to the stories without all the drama. Goes great together with my morning coffee. Looking forward to the next video!
That first QR album will forever live as a musical masterpiece, though they have many great albums, the debut album made such an impression on me because there was nothing like it. The vocals were truly astounding!
It is a throw up for me between Geoff and Patton I can't choose so please don't make me. Oh hang on Michael Kiskie too his voice is very much like Geoff's.
@@steventalavera2381 they would sell out either one of those. Stadiums probably not. I'd prefer to see them in a theater like the Stifel Theater in St. Louis.
@@steventalavera2381 I saw them do Mindcrime in it’s entirety with Pamela Moore in a smaller theatre in Portland in 95-96, it was fantastic! They also did it in an outdoor arena in Eugene Oregon in 2008. Saw the original tour 3 times. My favorite album of all time, so grateful to have seen it performed 5 times.
I'm dating myself, but I vividly remember going to see Queensryche open for Kiss on their Animalize tour in 1984. I had already long grown out of my Kiss phase, and was obsessed with Queensryche, and their debut EP. They were amazing, and Geoff blew my mind!!🤘🤘
This is great. “Hear In The Now Frontier” is an excellent album. I’ve loved it since the day it was released. I absolutely never understood the hate for that record. “Promised Land” is a genius album and one of the best sounding albums. It’s a complete world in a record. Everything this band did was excellent. Criminally under appreciated group. I’d take them over almost anybody else. Total class and originality.
Saw one of their arena shows during the *Here in the Now Frontier* tour. After the *Promise Land* album, was really looking forward to this concert. They couldn't even fill the Main Floor at Target Arena in Mpls MN. The concert like their *Here in the Now Frontier* album was boring. What a let down.
@@zakkhale181 - Maybe the show that I saw was: A) ... after Chris DeGarmo told the other members he's leaving. B) ... the band had an off night. C) ... the band was told the tour was ending early because *TICKETS WASN'T SELLING.* Since the album wasn't selling either. I don't take Geoff Tate word for anything. Since Tate's still living in the Mindcrime days.
Saw them in San Diego for HITNF. Fantastic show…and they played all the required classic QR. Honestly, it was as well-performed as any live show I’ve seen.
Refreshing to hear my favorite voice being humble and honest. There is/was no greater voice in all of Metal than Geoff"s. I tresured their music as it came out and went to see them tour their EP at The Living Room in Prov RI. I went to see them every time they came around. I still have it all on vinyl.
Even Geoff's regular talking voice sounds amazing! One of my favorites voices ever! I'll never forget the first time I heard Eyes of A Stranger! it gave me goosebumps, literally
if you are pretending Diary of a Madman does not exist... but Rage for ORder is a great album, it's the one that sold me on the band when I saw them open for AC/DC
For those who haven't checked it out, go check his performances in 2022, especially Queen of the Reich (yes hes singing it again). Tate's sounding great.
I'll never forget hearing 'Queen Of The Reich' on FM radio, while a student at Seton Hall U. I immediately went out and bought the EP. After that, I finally saw them live on The Warning tour at L'Amour rock club in Brooklyn, and I became a lifelong fan. I still listen to QR often at age 60. They are a timeless, amazing rock band!
Without a doubt QR should be ranked right up there with all the greats of the 80's! I've seen them live several times and without a doubt their live show was top shelf. So much so that they put a lot of bands to shame that had more record sales but couldn't do it as well live. Such a shame that they split the way they did but overall the change has seemed to work out well for everyone.
I'm with you, I still listen to them at 69. I NEVER get tired of their songs! They are absolutely the BEST band EVER!! Untouchable live!! No other band makes me FEEL the way they do!
That was a great interview with geoff , thank you to you and all the members of queensryche for all the music you've given to us metal heads all these years, I think i can speak for all of us in saying you truly have blessed all our lives with your music !!! Peace out Brother !!!!
Love this interview. Geoff's a huge talent and is very REAL and authentic. Much respect for him and what he has accomplished over the decades. I've seen you live both with Queensyrche and on your solo tour Geoff. I've been a die-hard fan since 1990!
One of the best! I think a lot of people of my generation has some feelings about Silent Lucidity like me. It will always be close to my heart. It is strange how a song can evoke such fresh emotion over and over. It's both heartbreaking and comforting at the same time. On April 7th, 1991, my cousin who would've been 16 in a few months later was killed while riding his moped to school. I had just turned 19 years old. As we rushed to my aunts house this song came on the radio. That was my first traumatic death I experienced. I had a hard time with it as we were pretty close. He would be just about 47 years old this month. RIP Jeremy you are missed.
Amazing how he has such a deep baritone speaking voice, then he turns into this powerhouse of a tenor virtuoso when he sings! I'd love to see the classic era of the band reunite, but that would mean putting an awful lot of egos aside, and I don't know if they're prepared to do that.
@@jpmcmullan8666 Because he is a pretender who replaced the greatest rock vocalist of all time? Because he didn’t help write any of the material that made QR special?
@@LyonHart1313 their new album is pretty special. He also didn’t help write any of the bad QR albums like Tate. And as a live band, if Latorre was replaced by Tate tomorrow, Queensryche would sound worse.
They produced some great music and they're very talented, but without Chris DeGarmo they haven't been nearly as compelling or as innovative as they used to be.
Agree 💯 I have no desire to listen to anything after HITNF (with the exception of Justified, since Chris wrote it). I still listen to them daily. They were so far ahead of the times back then, and their songs are still relevant today. Geoff's vocals made the songs great, but Chris was the brains behind the band, undoubtedly.
I'll have to agree. DeGarmo leaving was the beginning of the end and Tate leaving sealed the deal. Todd La Torre doesn't have the right voice. QR sounds like a bad cover band now.
@@DavidLivingston01 I think Todd does okay for the material. Obviously the magic isn't there anymore but I see it as a combination of different changes.
One of my all time favorite bands, so many amazing albums, the end of Geoff's era, those last 3-4 albums was getting rough but even his last one CHAOS had some good songs (I Take You, Hard Times, Drive, At the Edge). Todd's presence brought the band back to life though and I truly love what they've done so far with him. Shame it has to be this way but Geoff's solo stuff has been pretty good too.
There were always a song or 2 I found interesting even when everyone else hated the entire thing. HITNF is pretty brilliantly done if you sit and really listen to the songs and music together as a whole. That was something with The old QR,they liked to change it up and not release the same thing over and over and that what caught me and made me a fan besides the impressive playing.
@@vigocountyscanner Yes I think that Promised Land is an excellent listen and meaningful addition to their discography. Anything between that album and the Todd era material just doesn't resonate with me however. Really enjoyed the last two albums overall and hope that this upcoming one is along the same lines of quality in spite of the band showing some signs of splintering with Scott gone and also Parker moving onto other ventures.
@@shiningphantasy1393 I’m not even going to listen to anything else from them that’s new unless it’s with the original 5. I think there are more reasons to why Parker moved on and why Scott is gone then anyone will know. Great interview…and Geoff was very honest and introspective. Life is very challenging for everyone and it’s of course no different in a band setting. What I mean by that is at some point, families and day to day stresses can and do affect whatever it is you do. God bless all the Queensryche members and families for letting us appreciate them when we did. They are a very special piece of musical history and artistry that should be enjoyed forever. Thank you for that exquisite chapter of time and musical influence for me as a drummer. Appreciate ALL of you!🤘😎
MAN Geoff ! you hit the nail right on the head , Scott Rockenfield was the Neil Peart of Your band dude !, perhaps not lyrically but certainly with the timings and beats and power and force and perfection of the great Neil Peart ! I swear to God he is , just listen to the compositions , they aint like anyone elses shit !
100% correct. I’ve been drumming 48 years now. Went to music school and took private lessons from some of the greats. Scott’s drumming is one of a kind, like Neil’s. It’s described as a perpetual motion machine…it keeps the music moving like a train down a steep hill. Just AWESOME
Agreed, loved hearing Geoff talk about Scott as he is truly unique in his sound and style, the drums are probably the hardest instrument to develop an individual sound like that, where you can hear even without a band and know that's Scott. Also Chris and Michael's guitar work particularly the rhythm work and how they never play the exact same thing but rather each plays a complimentary part to the other, he is right in that nobody else really did that quite in the way they did, and of course Ed's massive bass lines!
@@philmccracken8947 LOL< I was blown away when Geoff said they were all bummed out and one of the guys put on 2112 and Geoff was singin THAT !! do you know what I would pay to hear that !! My mind has a difficult time trying to wrap its self around that!
Got backstage on the Mindcrime tour... you could see that the guys were taking care of their respective businesses... I was respectful and didn't barge into a conversation. I waited, got in where I fit in and talked with Geoff Tate. He was super nice to me and was genuinely interested as to what I thought of the show etc.
Speaking as a guitarist who has analyzed several pieces by Queensryche - there was nothing normal about the chord structures and progressions in their songs. DeGarmo was an absolute virtuoso on the instrument
I play drums but have noticed just by their hand movements and where their fingers are placed on the neck that it didn’t look like their stuff would be easy to play. I know a guy who played and I’d go to his house and he’d show me how to harmonize with the parts he was learning. Was interesting but I’m a drummer. Michael & Chris we underrated and over looked all these years for people who weren’t doing half of what these 2 were doing back then.
I agree, degarmo was the driving force that made them great, respect to all members but after degarmo left they were never the same and will never be again unless he’s writing and playing.
@@ratmetal1168 You can pick out the songs on Tribe that Chris worked on. It had that Queensryche sound to it that can’t be described, but know it when you hear it. Only 1 time since has that been achieved and that was with Parker On Where Dreams go to Die. That was the closest they have ever got back to that sound that you know it’s a QR song instantly. Don’t think they will ever get there again without the original 5 doing it.
Great interview and perspective....a very humble Geoff! Thanks for decades of great music, been a huge fan since 1984 Warning and never looked back. OMC is an epic masterpiece and Promise Land is incredible.
I lol'd when he immitated his vocal teacher. Aside from being one of the best vocalists to walk the earth, Geoff would probably be friggin awesome at voice acting for animated films. Great interview.

He still has the pipes & has an epic band behind him! Definitely going to check him out in March 2024 in South Carolina! Can't wait!
I like the fact that Geoff really likes “Rage For Order” a lot. That album put me in another world for quite some time. It’s dark, it’s the future, and there are vampires. It’s Terminator meets Dracula in the Matrix. Btw, I realize Operation Mindcrime is a better album, but I’ve heard all of its glory, so it’s refreshing to talk about Queensrÿche’s other albums.
You have a beautiful voice and you paint such a visual picture with your word's. I love The Warning and Operation Mindcrime. They are both masterpieces.
Mindcrime is, to me, the best album of all time. Every aspect on each song is perfect. The sad thing for the band is there was no way they could ever live up to that. How would any artist live up to any piece of work that great? DeGarmo was right for leaving. Tate is right for being totally bummed.
I 100% agree with you. Mindcrime is the best album of all time, absolute perfection, and still completely relevant today. I also agree that how could any band follow up that perfection.
Mind crime was their Mona Lisa no doubt but the follow up album, Empire was epic as well. They were on a roll. They weren’t suffering as a result of not living up to MC. GT is humble here but he became a jerk and that’s what tore down the band
If the original lineup was still going strong I’m certain Queensryche would have hall of fame status. The band musically were way ahead of their time. Operation Mindcrime was a mind blowing album and tour which I had the privilege of seeing. I would love a reunion.
Loved these guys ever since their EP came out in '83. Geoff one of the greatest vocal talents ever and a class act. Would love to see some sort of reunion

Take Hold of the Flame sung at the Tokyo Concert was mind blowing. They have created masterpieces. Just incredible.
That whole show is just ridiculous,.. ; 0
OHHHH YESSS!!!👍👍👍❤❤❤
I used to order a pizza and watch the whole Tokyo concert...it was 1984 I think. I taped the whole show from MTV so I watched it like 100 times. The Warning is a masterpiece, way before Operation Mindcrime, that brought the band to a larger audience
That’s probably the finest vocal performance I’ve ever heard in my life. Unbelievable talent.
Geoff tate amazing vocalist I only seen them once they opened for Metallica at that time they were touring for operation mindcrime at that time I was not a fan never gave them a chance they were amazing a true fan after that
His singing on 'Take Hold of the Flame' made me love heavy metal when I was just a kid back in '84. I love Queensryche! Greetings from Rio- Brazil
Different to hear him speak so highly of the OG guys again.
Wow.. just wow. I can't say that I have ever listened to a more humble and real interview .
What a class act.
Operation Mindcrime is the defining concept album for Heavy Metal music.
Thank you Geoff and Queensryche for all that you have given to us.
DeGarmo & Wilton worked well together, created an iconic sound.
This was a really great interview. Geoff was very humble and honest. He didn't seem bitter or spiteful. He seems very comfortable with himself and his extreme accomplishments.
Well done.
From 18yrs old to now 54 never stopped listening to your beautiful voice
I read this and looked to see if I wrote it!!! My exact sentiments.
Me, from 14 years old to 52 years of age and every day I jam out to Queensryche from the original line up. Rarely do I listen to the newest line up with La todd, he's not the voice of Queensryche, although he does sing good but he just isn't Geoff Tate.
@@jeffparimuha4248 lolo same - same age wow there are alot of us.
One of the greatest voices of the era...thank you Geoff for all those awesome vocals.
One of the greatest rock/metal singers of all time. The original lineup of Quensryche was such a strong influence on my musical journey as a guitar player. The musicianship was great but what made them special was the songwriting. It would be awesome to see them back together again.
I absolutely became a ‘singer’ at another level singing Queensryche songs as a young kid plus voice lessons & classical training. Thank you Geoff.
This is one of the best Tate interviews I have even seen, been a Ryche fan since early 80’s thank you for this!!
And let's not forget bout Eddie Jackson on the bass, one of the most underrated players. I have nothing but mad respect for these guys, and even after my 35 years of playing guitar........can't touch these guys
The Bass tone on OMC is seriously the nastiest, most punchy bass tone ever 🤘🏼
A bass tone I’ve been admiring for decades

@@davidmarshall385 depends on the song. I think on Operation:Mindcrime the bass is tuned mostly to drop D. Songs off of Empire are in E std.
The rhythm section... Eddie & Scott are phenomenal players and add so much power to the distinctive Queensryche sound.
It sure sounds like Geoff and the band needed to get away from one another as the relationship had become toxic.
I have had the Pleasure of Geoff's Company on Several occasions. Always Kind and Gracious to Us. A Fantastic Gentleman!
Band is just like a marriage, things don't always last as long as you would want it to.
You will not regret getting into QR.
Well said! It's story-telling time, like they used to do in the old-days, without overblown narratives.

Tate has an incredible vocal range.
Why bother? Todd Latorre today might not sound as good as Tate in the 80s but he certain sounds better than Tate now

That band couldn't have been that band without any single one of you guys . . that's just the fuckin truth.
and that aint to just you because I know ALL those guys are gonna watch this whether they'll admit it or not.

He doesn't talk about Eddie Jackson at all :( He's an amazing bass player and brings so much to the band.
