In this interview Geoff easily silences all the (stoopid!) haters by coming across as a very likeable, knowledgeable, intelligent and pleasant gentleman. His musical pedigree is at a royal level in the metal world - and will always remain. Good to know he is an active businessman and a busy guy. I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say. Rock on, Geoff!
40 years a fan... And I love Geoff's soothing speaking voice just as much as his singing, guy is a legend. Saw the Ryche 3 times back in the day. Once (at arm's length) circa 1985 as a surprise guest (word had reached me somehow) at the inauguration of L'Amour Far East on Long Island, once in 1987 I think, opening up for Metallica at the Nassau Coliseum on the Justice Tour, and once in Paris in 1990 with Lynch Mob. What a time for music. Strangely, the Rage for Order album can seem prophetic, considering what the world has become.
Gotta say… I was a fan since the Myth days. Once I heard Geoff’s voice on the Myth demo I asked Randy G. (then working at 7-11) to ask Geoff for Maestro Kyle’s number, then became a student myself. (thanks Randy & Geoff, RIP DK) Geoff seemed to go through a rough phase, both vocally and with a bit of arrogance. Because he’s in the public eye we all got to see it. Watching recent performances and interviews, it seems he has moved beyond that and sounds great again - and seems like a good dude once again. I’m happy to see this interview and hope to see a show soon.
As far as him saying “close your eyes and you’d think it’s the original lineup playing” what a crock of crap!! The original lineup with Degarmo was phenomenal!!! A masterpiece!!! The band he has now is good don’t get me wrong but it’s NOT even close to sounding like the original.
He seems to get more soothing w/every passing year. It’s nice to hear him sound content and obviously still playing, singing, and touring. Good stuff man and might have to check out this backstage pass thing. Gonna go listen to Queensryche now. 👍🏻
I never understood why Geoff tate didn't do something like what ozzy did after black sabbath fired him ! And audition guitar players I'm sure jerry Cantrell was available
Hey geoff you have all my respect sometimes people just cant be together and it sounds kinda like some of my past relationships it was always their fault but every time i saw QR you spilled your heart out on the stage the band was amazing and i would say the best live band I've ever seen i wish you the best for giving your best
Ridiculous analogy.... that's like saying because Joe & Julie got re-married after divorcing, that means Tim & Tina should be able to do it as well. Not true. And to 99.99% of those who make these comments, they have never even met these people or spent any time with them beyond a meet & greet, or being a fan from a distance. Great interview again from 80's Bin!
Sometimes it can take years for the meaning of lyrics to make sense to you. Or after you experience what the singer is talking about.. It’s good to get people thinking and exercise that brain muscle!!
That's hilarious....I was already out of my mind, they kind of made me feel it's okay to be put in a straight jacket....and not think only america's way was right.
Thank you Geoff and the OG Queensrÿche band. I am forever grateful for the endless hours of entertainment the band has brought to my life and I'm certain through to the end of my days. My greatest Queensrÿche moment was around 1986 when I battled my way to the front row at the old Santa Monica Civic (I want to say Yngwie Malmsteen & Saxon were all on that same bill), where I received a fist bump from Tate himself. A legendary moment in my band chasing (much younger) life in the LA heavy metal scene. I remember that fist bump moment like yesterday (even if I can't recall the exact set of bands that night). So yes, thank you Geoff Tate. For all of it. You'll live on forever as a generational voice for a generational band. That counts for something in my book. P.s. I NEVER BOUGHT ANOTHER 'RYCHE ALBUM AFTER GT LEFT THE BAND. It was NEVER the same.
Not trolling but when he said that you have to be a great player to play with me and these guys are great players, have heard them and I'd say they are typically average but not great players. It was more of a weekend queensryche cover band.
I will say they have improved greatly and at this point they are pretty solid. Years ago I went to one of Geoff's shows down in FLA and there were questionable harmony lines..enough of them that my non-musician friend asked me...was that right? It didn't sound right.. No..it was not.... But, that said, since then, his touring band has put in the work and they are kicking ass pretty consistently now. I love Geoff and Queensryche. I wish them both nothing but success.
Great time at the Rage anniversary show. And Empire. And getting to meet Tate after 10 15 shows in my life. The. And was on point. I still love The Ryche. Got the tats and all but Tate is a performer. Seen The Ryche a couple times. Todd is awesome. But I’ve made a stand.
Music is a personal journey. But it's arrogant presumption to bash someone else's favorite music because you assume yours is better. Very immature as well
I know exactly what he means about lyric writing. It's true with composition, melodies, textures and arrangement. But it's especially true with lyric writing - you can't emulate other lyrical styles - you can learn ideas that may influence your thought process, but ultimately, you just have to write it how you hear it and how you feel it. Word choice is going to necessarily vary from one author to another, even to convey the same idea. And your vocal performance will be far more impactful if you use your own words. And you'll write lyrics faster because you aren't trying to think through a bunch of layers of grammatical and prose style rules.
You put it out there....Sweet Oblivion....so.please.do.play some "Disconnect" The dark.stuff...OMC-The Fight, G.T.-Evil, Change, Tomorrow, QR-F.U..-Weight of the world....Promised Land, Someone Else, Chasing Blue sky...
His wine farm in Germany make wine for several labels - he's just one. You can buy any of the wines they make and they will all taste like "Insania". And there's no such thing as "organic" wine. All vineyards use pesticides - they have to otherwise the vineyards would die.
Not surprised that Geoff's ego wouldn't allow him to realize that we don't listen to music WITH empathy; we listen to music FOR empathy. Regardless of what he is going through to compell him to write a song, we listen because of how it speaks to us. It's the actual key as to how we relate and gravitate to artists. But he's only been in the business for 50 years. He'll get it someday
Wow. I just love this guy. Seen him in the early days with the ryche in London and seen him in a real personal gig in hull in the uk. Absolutely fantastic. ❤😍
I am a fan of tates not only as a hard rock heavy melodically dramatic metal like Queenryche fan. AND as a professional opera singer for over 20 years. He was a huge vocal inspiration for me. That range and vibrato is a gift!!!
"my band is made up of 20yr olds" - in other words, "a band I can pay peanuts and they'll take it". And the ONLY reason his band can sound like the original QR is because he is using backing tracks for keys, percussion and all backing vocals.
I would have to say Geoff tate by himself sounds more like queensryche then the guys callin themselves queensryche when you consider its only the bass and rhythm guitar player left from the original band
"It may not be the original band, but if you shut your eyes...sounds just like'em." Um, yeah, if the original band tuned down a half-step. Don't get me wrong. I don't hold it against GT for making adjustments to the music because he's gotten older...but I DO hold it against him for treating the fans like idiots who can't see right through his BS. Oh, and btw, I don't buy it for an instant that his "Back Stage Pass Travel" get's more than a half a glance from GT, let alone dinner or kisses and hugs LMAO
Love ya Geoff, but sorry I disagree. They might be 20 year olds who are full of energy and give it their all every night and they might play well, but they are not as good as the original band. It does not sound the same even with my eyes closed. Reasonable facsimile but it's just not as good. I don't even listen to Queensryche since you left. I don't care for their replacement of you. It's just not the same.
If your old like me you know this guy is exactly like Sebastian Bach. Basically a 1 hit wonder and he killed it all by his HUGE ego. It was him that the rest of the band didn't get along with. Greed ruined him and he knows it. He said he gets along with his "great" players thats because he controls everything and everyone. He will replace them if they open their mouth.
You miss the whole point without Geoff Tate there would have been no QR other than the great chris Degarmo and his skill at writing songs and melodic guitar this is what the fans came to see ! Its always amazed me that the guys in the band didnt either understand or appreciate what they had in a man like Geoff Tate i will say this i do not like anything that the band has put out since the departure of gt but but this latest release its not bad and todd has becomne a decent vocalist
He did all of that in part one of his interview. The first one is over 20 min long and he discusses almost exclusively QR. He’s says great things about the original guys too
