Got to do security for Ryche back in 2001, first night of that tour it was in Phx. That entire day was crazy and incredible. But what I remember most about hanging w/ Ryche most of the day and night was how cool, fun and just a regular guy Michael was. We sat backstage laughing about the 80's styles while asking what were we really thinking back then? We talked about guitars, guitars, guitars. At the end of the show someone got on stage on his side and grabbed one of his Les Pauls threw it into the crowd. I was on the other side of the stage and I just happened to see the guitar flying out into the crowd. I took off running into the crowd, got outside and saw a guy running with it across the parking lot. I caught up to him, we got into a bit of a fight, didn't take long (cause my day job was working Maximum level corrections for the State of AZ.. I had him on the ground pretty quick. Got the guitar and took it backstage and handed it to Michael who had already kicked a hole in the dressing room door, he was so pissed. But when he saw me with it, he came up took the guitar, and gave me a hug and thanked me. For me that was the end of it.. But, nope. He later on found me before they were getting on the bus to leave and gave me a box full of Ryche swag and everything was signed by all the members of Ryche. Even Geoff who I will say was disappointing that day, he was in full on diva mode the entire day. But he signed everything too, and he had the band take a photo with me. He didn't have to do any of that, nor was I expecting any of it.
He seems really cool, but Chris DeGarmo was the main creative force behind the band, along with Geoff Tate. The band hasn't been the same since Chris left.
@@dowens3781 That's because Geoff and his wife took all control of the band including writing etc. If you've noticed since firing Geoff the rest of the band is happy and heavier... and their last few albums without Geoff are great

Why to this day does Rage For Order still not get the love, appreciation & props it's been so long overdue?? THAT is the album where they came into their own. THAT is the moment where they sounded like no other artist on the planet. NOT on Op: MC. Mindcrime is beyond amazing but Rage is when they really made the 1st big move to establish themselves. And it's packed full with truly great well written songs. This video comes off like cut clips of him answering the interviewer's specific questions. I don't believe Whip himself would just skip over Rage if he was openly talking about Ryche's history.
The press hated their use of synths and samples, it was a huge leap from The Warning or the QOTR E.P. I still think Rage is their best work. The early work is untouchable and lucky to have seen them several times up to Hear In The Now, which was all down hill after that for me.
The Warning and Rage were kind of a disappointment after the EP, as far as heaviness goes. The band didn't realize their potential until Operation:Mindcrime, which is a killer album. Unfortunately, they went in a lighter direction again after that.

Without question Operation Mindcrime is QR’s definitive statement but “The Warning” is a Masterpiece start to finish, from album cover to “roads to madness”.
Having watched both Michael and Geoff interviews on this channel, I suddenly realized why I became such a huge Queensrÿche fan. They both say the same thing in their separate interviews about how they got their inspiration from European and NWOBHM bands. Being a 13-14 year old impressionable kid, my first two favorite hard rock bands were Judas Priest and Iron Maiden followed quickly by Accept, Grim Reaper, Scorpions, etc.. As I got older, I got heavily into progressive rock of Rush, Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Yes, and it's undeniable that this is exactly where Queensrÿche was at. I've been a huge fan since Operation Mindcrime came out and saw them opening for Metallica in 1988, but it wasn't until relatively recently that I finally realized the connection. Seems obvious in retrospect, but not all of us are students of music theory, we just know what we like and that's it. The late 80's and early 90's were a magical time for hard rock and metal, and I'm glad that I grew up in the middle of it.
I was stationed on the USS Mars in '88 or '89 when I met a cook named DeGarmo. Jokingly I asked "DeGarmo, eh? You got a brother in the band Queensryche? Haha!" And he said yeah, his brother played guitar for them. I told him he was full of shit, and he took me to his rack where he pulled out a photo album full of family pictures. It was him. I grew up listening to Seattle grunge and metal, and became a huge Queensryche fan about 15 years ago. I've been stationed in the Seattle area with the Army for the last few years and finally had the chance to see them play live this past weekend. By some strange coincidence my friend and I happened to be staying in the same hotel as the band and when we went for breakfast the next morning we happened to be sitting in the table next to the band. We got to meet and talk with Michael and Eddie. They are both true, down to earth people and I will never forget that moment! They are both class acts and I am an even bigger fan of their music after meeting them in person.
Queen of the Reich comes out in the early 80s. I’m a sophomore in high school and a guitarist buddy of mine comes running down the hall with the EP in the air yelling “you have to hear this!” It was a game changer. What was great to find out later was that QR was only about three/four years older than we were, at the time. It was an awesome time to be a musician. Great interview with Michael and I’m looking forward to the next videos.
Operation: Mindcrime is a Masterpiece. A whole lot of very great tunes to go back and re-visit amongst their material before and up to Operation: Mindcrime, as well. Queen of the Reich was the first song I heard by them. Looking back, some of the imagery of the 80's warrants forgetting, but the brilliance of Queensryche's music should not be forgotten!
I worked a Queensryche show in the early days, and they did sound quite generic at that time....But when the Operation Mindcrime album came out I was really floored!...That album set a standard, and to my ears still sounds great today....

Michael is very likeable. It's weird, for years I am sure these guys hated being asked the same questions about their origins but now ... people have forgotten, it's not mainstream anymore and they seem to relish recounting their origin stories.
In 1985, I worked at a hotel front desk. There was one of our cute guest sitting in the lobby jamming on the guitar. Just him, his wife, my coworker and I. My response, Dang you’re good. Are you in a band?😂😂😂 My bf has their symbol tattoo on his back. First time I saw it, “Hey I met Michael”.
Micheal WAS Queensryche. He did the mo s t amazing rifts and classical undertones in the ballads. Jeff was one of the most versatile vocalists in the world because of his low tones that would suddenly gp into these high notes however, Micheal is the one that made them. No more to say. This is the greatest interview series ever! Just fantastic stuff, and it's so important to get the oral history of these legendary bands recorded. Mindcrime was the greatest LP of the 80's, imho.
Got to meet the band a few years ago at a special meet and greet performance. Original members all but for Chris. Just great guys and got photos and got to talk about a lot of things. Saw their show later that night. First time was the Rage for Order when they opened for Ozzy. Long may Queensryche roll!
Even though this channel mainly features glam/hair metal (this episode being an exception), I love these interviews. A little too short, but that's better than a lot of videos I see on RUclips that are long and boring. Nice work, dude.
Saw them on Operation Mindcrime opening up for Def Leopard in 88' Still have memories from that show. Wow. Didn't know they opened up for zebra a new Orleans band. Very cool
Your video here gave me a much-needed reacquaintance with this amazing band! Don't get me wrong, I listen to their work fairly regularly in my normal music rotation, however, I have yet to really sit down and work on their material on the guitar, even though I have wanted to since I was a kid. My future practice will employ some of their amazing songs that I have been dreaming of playing since my youth! Thanks!
Michael, when Chris left, I commented on a feed, that maybe then, you'd get the opportunity to shine brighter. You stepped up, admirably. As a fan since "The Warning", I'd love to see, (and believe it can happen!) the unicorn, that would be a all original members tour, for us, the fans. I wouldn't be delusional and think you'd be hunky dory, buddy's. But travel on different tour buses, use different entrances, room on different floors in the hotel's, and give the fans what they are truly deserving of. I know money has been offered for this, so please, before it's to late. It's pretty hard to take someone on tour after they die!
Rage For Order is a masterpiece - I can't imagine that recording session..... it gets so overlooked.
Agreed. Best. Album. EVER.

It's VERY good. I'd still take Mindcrime over it, however.

The OG Ryche wrote the most mind-expanding thought-provoking lyrics and the song "Roads To Madness" deserves a Tony award and a genius grant.
I have a guitar pic of yours I caught at Greensboro when you toured with Ozzy ! It has your name on one side and Queensryche on the other side ! In the 80's
Warning is the soundtrack of my life! I’ve absolutely loved and worshipped that album since it’s release! It never gets old to me. It’s timeless and iconic
Such a great story, a damn shame this won't happen again in the music industry.
I know it's not on Mindcrime, but I just learned the guitar intro for Jet City Woman and can't stop playing it, it's such a cool riff. 😎
This is the greatest interview series ever! Just fantastic stuff, and it's so important to get the oral history of these legendary bands recorded. Mindcrime was the greatest LP of the 80's, imho.
I'm an original Queensryche fan .I love them .
I've seen them 8 times live .
I love the new stuff "Keep hold of the Flame".
Got to meet the band a few years ago at a special meet and greet performance. Original members all but for Chris. Just great guys and got photos and got to talk about a lot of things. Saw their show later that night. First time was the Rage for Order when they opened for Ozzy. Long may Queensryche roll!
Skipped right over their greatest album, “Rage For Order!”
Hopefully it's in the next segment. One can dream.
"Empire" is their greatest album
This channel is great! I’m looking forward to more features on this and, the rest ! Really well done! I miss that era
Even though this channel mainly features glam/hair metal (this episode being an exception), I love these interviews. A little too short, but that's better than a lot of videos I see on RUclips that are long and boring. Nice work, dude.
Seriously, what a fantastic interview.
Rage for order is a Jewel.
Love these videos!!
Wow! Great interview! I’ve been a fan since their EP and seeing them for then first time with Metallica was a righteous moment!
Saw them on Operation Mindcrime opening up for Def Leopard in 88' Still have memories from that show. Wow. Didn't know they opened up for zebra a new Orleans band. Very cool
Cool to hear what he has to say, seen them in 88 or 89 in Englewood ( can you say seat cushions) whure every where. Great night.
What a nice cool guy
You guys were kick ass world class !
Tour w/Twisted Sister was huge 10/22/83 Buffalo NY. Remember crowd blown away by QR and drum set with chains as stands! 🤘
I saw you guys with geoff on the empire tour with suicidal best fkn concert I've ever seen to this day
*Geoff*
queensryche great band totally underated
First like! Awesome series, gang! Keep 'em coming!
Brilliant interview 👍
Had a roommate that was OBSESSED with Queensryche.
Saw the Queensryche/Metallica show at the Richfield Coliseum in '88. Just awesome....
I was at their 2nd show with Zebra in Portland. Queensryche opened and absolutely killed. They were great!
This is so cool, thank you!
Can never go wrong with the first 3 Queensryche albums and the first EP.
Special times with killer music.Proud to say I lived through it.
