Great story Dana, I still remember meeting you @ Taco Bell n' Backstage @ the Kiss Hot in the Shade tour w I used to talk on a daily basis to the girl who ran the Slaughter Fanclub...I'm that kid year's later 😆 tc 😉
"The real Black Sabbath is early Ozzy "??, the engine of Sabbath IS Toni Iommi, who tuned his guitar down to slacken strings for easier playing, because industrial accident cut off Toni's finger tips on his last day of factory work & manager from that factory introduced (musically) Toni to Django Rhinehardt who played with leather tips on severed fingertips, which inspired Toni after almost giving up guitar, Ozzy??, he was just a guy that Toni use to beat up at the same school they went to.
Hate to think of how drastically different my life would have been had iconic moment in music history never happened! Thank God it did, and thank Dana as well! 😉
😓 You can bet that neither Ozzy or Sharon ever showed ^him ANY gratitude whatsoever for all he did right here to get Ozzy off his useless ass and to find a fantastic guitarist who basically helped make his solo career, with more help from the other 2 guys who helped write all the music, Bob and Lee. Ozzy screwed over the 2 of them in short order too. 😈
Tremendous story telling from Dana! And probably the most accurate Ozzy impression by an American ever! Get him back on, he must have a ton of great rock n roll stories!
Finally!!! Finally!!!! After all these years I finally hear the full story which never made sense to me before this time. Just how the hell did Dana Strum get involved with Ozzy? Finally I understand the story. Now it makes sense. Dana... thanks for helping to bring Randy Rhoads to the big time. My favorite guitar player of all time from the first moment I heard him play... and that song was Over the Mountain. We all know how it turned out a short time later. A travesty. There's no "but" to add here. Randy will forever be a legendary guitar player from the 80s. His music will live on forever.
Dana also knew a LOT of people in Hollywood, which is a huge reason why he got hooked up with Ozzy. Randy didn't even want to audition. He didn't like Sabbath's music and it was only because his mom practically pushed him out the door that he went. He was content being in QR and teaching at Musonia. So between Dana AND Randy's mom, if they both hadn't played a part, it would've taken longer for us to hear of Randy. I don't think that Randy would've stayed an "unknown" for long. His talent was too huge to be contained forever.
What an amazing interview. I've read so much about Ozzy and Randy over the years and particularly how Randy got the gig, but never in this much detail. This is some historical footage. Nice work.
I laughed so hard. Thanks, Dana, for giving the accurate details of Randy's audition. What a wild day you had that day. You do Ozzy better than Ozzy does Ozzy.
Finally. The story straight from the source. And it's cooler than we could ever imagine. And man, Dana does the best Ozzy impression! I'd like to imagine if Randy had lived, he would have told this story with Dana and they both would have made Ozzy impressions.
I actually had chills listening to this. I started playing guitar in 85 because I heard a dude playing Ozzy in his garage with a drummer buddy of his. 2 weeks later I had my first guitar and became obsessed. 30 plus yrs later I still listen to NOTHING but 80s metal- Ozzy, Ratt, Dokken,Scorpions, etc. This was the most important interaction or alignment of the stars in my existence, and I was just a drop of water in an endless sea. I was actually pissed when the meeting with Randy and Ozzy the day after the audition wasn't elaborated on. Dana's Ozzy impression is pretty damn good. Steve
80s MRB congrats the Randy Rhoads family for the award from RnR Hall of Fame for "music excellence". Long time coming! Hoping the presentation is one that honors the music legend the way he certainly deserves.
dude. THANK YOU DANA. and thanks for ya'll postin this incredible interview. all of them have been good and all to be sure but this one is my favorite by far. gonna check out part two now.
This is simply the greatest interview I have ever heard in my life. Told by the only person that can tell the whole story. I'm glad it's out there to keep the story straight. His Ozzy impersonation is excellent too. Thank you Dana!
Awesome story! I’ve believed forever that Randy put ozzy on the map. Diary of a madman is the greatest album to ever grace the metal world. Thanks for being the guy that made that happen!👊🏻
Well said ! Diary has been my all time favorite record since the day I bought it at 16 years old (late 1981) it's probably the greatest Heavy Metal record in the history of Rock and Roll . Just a timeless Masterpiece
The impact of the story he's telling cannot be overstated. Every band, every concert, every video on Headbanger's Ball would have never happened if it wasn't for Randy and Ozzy crossing paths. Steve
Dana was truly the instrument of God. I had no idea Ozzy called Randy "The Messiah" before they met. I could write books about the way Randy changed my life, and through that, countless thousands more. Thank you Dana Strum for doing your part, believing in Randy, and having such patience with Ozzy. Little did you know you were changing the world.

He's your brother?!?! Awesome. How was it like growing up with him? Oh... oh... you're one of those people who just throws out the word 'brother' to make it sound like you have a connection with someone who has never even heard of you.
What a great story teller Dana is. And one of the best Ozzy impressions I've ever heard. All these years I often wondered what the real and detailed story was.... Too bad the audition was never recorded. A big thank you to Dana for bringing Randy into Ozzy's orbit and ours. We are forever grateful.

If Sharon omits Dana's contribution of Ozzy's story and doesn't have someone play Dana in the upcoming Ozzy biopic i won't even fucking bother watching it!!! What a key and pivotal mement in Randy's and Ozzy's life that could not have been told any better than the man responsible for PAINSTAKINGLY making it all happen!!! I have heard this story a million times from Ozzy but this was incredible!!!! Makes the story a million times better and totally verifies what Ozzy has said. Ozzy did his best solo recordings with Randy and that is saying something because he went on to make some seriously awesome songs. RIP Randy, taken far too young
This story almost brought tears to my eyes 👀. It's musicians and stories like this our kids will never be a part of nowadays. I'm going to listen to it again.

One of music's most important moments in history and you made it happen!I couldn't possibly thank you enough! Also, by far the est Ozzy impersonation I've everheard!!!
The ‘combo amp’ of Randy’s Dana is refers to was a Pignose amp-a truly tiny little amp you can hold in one hand that has KILLER tone. Seriously, these amps sound incredible-especially miced up. What a lot of people don’t realize is that smaller speakers ‘break up’ better and sound HUGE under a microphone-You get massive tone and sustain, and crazy good distortion. In fact, many guitar legends use them in the studio, and that’s what Randy had that day.
That would be 100% WRONG. The combo amp was a Fender Harvard and the MXR pedal was a Distortion Plus. The amp Randy used at the Starwood that Dana wanted was a Peavey head with a cabinet that was loaded with 6 Alec-Lansing speakers.
@@acepaul407 I’ve read an interview with Randy and he specifically said he played a Pignose when auditing for Ozzy. He also said he didn’t even get to properly play, he was just warming up, essentially and Ozzy perked up and said “you’ve got the job’

As well as drawing everyone listening INTO your story and your "world"! You always were THE GUY THAT MADE THINGS HAPPEN, and obviously with your work with Vince and everything else, you still are. Thank you for all you and Mark did for the early Vegas scene. Without you guys, Imagine Dragons, Panic at the Disco, and many others would probably have never gotten noticed... Also for the inspiration you guy's were to all of us and especially including me. You guys dragged a "nobody local band guy" around with you to ALL of the major Vegas rock music events! And as far as this being a great story. IT ALWAYS IS, WHEN ITS THE TRUTH. Thank you Dana. (A lotta people owe you.)
Love all things Randy and this is a great story to hear!! Now if we could only get one of the many professionally filmed shows that Sharon's been sitting on for 39/40 years that she absolutely has!! I can't think of any musician who deserves to be seen in all his glory more than Randy!!
Dana cracked me up the whole time I was watching. Great Ozzy impersonation by the way. I subscribed soon as I saw who it was. As a bass player myself I've always enjoyed Dana. Awesome interview.
Did Ozzy deserve to have Randy as his guitarist coming out of BS (uh, black sabbath) and being so irresponsible? I just have such negative feelings on the whole thing and the whole Sharon thing where she cheated so many out of the $ they rightly deserved. But Dana tells this so well, you can't stop listening if you know anything about Ozzy and Randy.
@@tf7223 And George Lynch too, he left his job when Gillis was going to get back to Night Ranger because Ozzy offered him the job and in the end he gave the job to Jack E. Lee. Of course, George Lynch never got paid the weeks he went on tour getting ready to take Brad's place.
I just got done reading Bob Daisley's book. Sharon is a snake. Ozzy also changed for the worse as well. Sharon, although being responsible for Ozzy's post Sabbath carrier, was a bad influence on his character.
Back when my family was broke, my mom owned and drove a grey 1983 Volkswagen Scirocco.. and to know Randy drove his mom's Scirocco to go audition for Ozzy is pretty awesome lol. Ours was so jankie that during winter, for some reason the heater would blow stronger and hotter air when she would go faster. So she would always look out for cops and would always be doing like 20mph over the limit to warm us up. Years later that ended up being my first car when I got my license. It's crazy to think how the music icons you look up to also started from humble beginnings like Randy Rhoads did driving his moms VW Scirocco.
Dana is an amazing story teller. The story of Dana getting Randy the gig is well known. But hearing it told in THAT way? WOW!!! fills in a lot of gaps. If a movie ever gets made, I hope the film makers tell it like that. Not bloody likely....
That was a great story!Always knew the highlights of how it went down, but hearing the backstory and minute details straight from the horse's mouth, made it even better! Thanks a lot!

Randy was and always will be a HUGE influence on my playing so this gets filed in my "one of the best stories ever" category. And, Dana? You are the man for holding him to his word. Actually, you are the man anyhiw. Loved your playing and production work in VVI. And the same goes for Slaughter. And thanks for getting Randy heard.
Over the past few decades we've heard sharon and ozzy speak about how much they appreciate and miss randy, but until I heard this guy's story, I never realized how little effort they actually put into finding him, getting ozzy sober or getting his post sabbath career off the ground.
you two are incredibly lucky, sadly he died before i got to see him, but I listen to the amazing bootlegs on youtube. Randy AND Bob daisley took Ozzy to the next level Bob is key too he is the one that told ozzyto move on from the guys he was jamming with to find a world class musician .....
This Video Is UnF’ing Believable. I know Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum, both are terrific guys as are Jeff Bland and Will Hunt, but this video leaves me wanting to hear 👂 more From Strum.👍🤘🏼✌️🎸
God damn! I was a huge Ozzy and Slaughter fan and had no idea Dana was involved with Ozzy! Bravo , this was a fantastic interview. Very refreshing to watch as there is so much garbage out there and everything is so fucking fake! Thanks
Finally, the bits and pieces of this story, over the years..it all lines up and makes sense. Exactly how Randy AND Ozzy have always described it, from their own viewpoints...and Dana wraps it all up. What a tale! Thanks so very much for this!
Dana's a great storyteller. I rarely watch RUclips videos all the way through but this was the exception...and it was exceptionally entertaining. As a lifelong Randy fan that's the story I wanted to hear.
The real Mesiah of this amazing story is Mr. Dana Strum!!! I'll be forever grateful to you! And I know I'm not the only one! Thank you! Randy Rhoads lives on!

They should make a movie about this and the whole Randy Rhoades saga.
Awesome! Randy was my favorite guitar player of all time! Love when these gems come out to learn more about him and him with Ozzy!
Love all things Randy and this is a great story to hear!! Now if we could only get one of the many professionally filmed shows that Sharon's been sitting on for 39/40 years that she absolutely has!! I can't think of any musician who deserves to be seen in all his glory more than Randy!!
A debt of gratitude from every metal fan for your determination.
Dana cracked me up the whole time I was watching. Great Ozzy impersonation by the way. I subscribed soon as I saw who it was. As a bass player myself I've always enjoyed Dana. Awesome interview.
Me too I love the guyxx
Thanks!
They did the same thing to Brad Gillis right after Randy died, they both also treated Brad like shit.
@@tf7223 Unless you were there you know nothing but rumours.
I can't help but think that fortuitous meeting also led to Rhoads' untimely death.
This was Dana's 1977 to 1979 Band at the Starwood , ruclips.net/video/BA4j6qyMkAo/видео.html
That. Was. FANTASTIC!! I'm totally inspired!! 👏👏👏👏
What a great story! Dana Strum is one of my favorite bassist. It’s cool to see interviews from him.
Dana, great story and awesome impersonation of Ozzy. Very entertaining!
This is pure gold for Ozzy and metal fans like myself! Thanks
That was a great story!Always knew the highlights of how it went down, but hearing the backstory and minute details straight from the horse's mouth, made it even better! Thanks a lot!
Awesome To Hear This Story ! Met Dana Year's Ago Ago He's Still Cool As Ever I'm A Huge Randy Rhoads Fan! My Favorite Guitarist Of All Time!!!! We Talked About Randy and Gave Him Some Artwork!
Over the past few decades we've heard sharon and ozzy speak about how much they appreciate and miss randy, but until I heard this guy's story, I never realized how little effort they actually put into finding him, getting ozzy sober or getting his post sabbath career off the ground.
....very well told. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤘
Met Dana in mid 90's in Maryland..great guy..very smart.
Wow that's great interview, love it
Well then thank you very much Dana Strum. A lot of people owe you👍🏻
My husband seen both tours with Randy, he always said Randy is the one who took Ozzy to the next level
you two are incredibly lucky, sadly he died before i got to see him, but I listen to the amazing bootlegs on youtube.
Randy AND Bob daisley took Ozzy to the next level Bob is key too he is the one that told ozzyto move on from the guys he was jamming with to find a world class musician .....
I've never heard the Randy audition in this detail before. It's great to hear the behind the scenes stuff like this!
This Video Is UnF’ing Believable. I know Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum, both are terrific guys as are Jeff Bland and Will Hunt, but this video leaves me wanting to hear 👂 more From Strum.👍🤘🏼✌️🎸
After all these years, fricken fantastic story!
God damn! I was a huge Ozzy and Slaughter fan and had no idea Dana was involved with Ozzy!
Bravo , this was a fantastic interview. Very refreshing to watch as there is so much garbage out there and everything is so fucking fake! Thanks
Wow!!! Fantastic! This was amazing! Thank you Dana 🤘🏼🔥🔥🤘🏼
Dana does the most spot-on Ozzy impression of all time. And, more importantly, tells it exactly how it was. Music love to Mr. Strum. 🤘
AMAZING!!!!. Thanks so much for this video🎸🎸Dana is a great guy..and incredible story teller😊😊
The real Mesiah of this amazing story is Mr. Dana Strum!!! I'll be forever grateful to you! And I know I'm not the only one! Thank you! Randy Rhoads lives on!
What a great interview... I really didn’t want this to stop. Also... Dana does an amazing Ozzy impression !
