Vinnie might seem humble, but I've had personal experiences that show a different side of him. He's been quite hostile to fans and even sent me hate mail for posting videos of his performances.
Met Vinnie on a flight from San Diego to Florida along with Ronnie Dio both nice guys very outgoing. We had a great conversation in Dallas on a layover. Ronnie even got me seats on the floor for his show in Hollywood, Florida just a great memory. I was in the Marines back then 1982 or 1983.
While your encounter with Vinnie was positive, my experience has been the opposite. He sent me hate mail and struck my account for posting videos of his band, showing a less friendly side.
Ronnie put the fans 1st it didn't matter if there was 5 people or 5 thousand like the song says "WE ROCK" and RONNIE JAMES DIO did exactly that he ROCKED RIP RJD😢
I’ve been listening to Mob Rules again after 20 some years, Vinnie is a monster on the drums !!! So much to keep up with Black Sabbath and DIO… how does he keep all the songs in order??!!! Thank you so much Vinnie for your gift!!!
Vinnie's musical talent is impressive, but my personal experience with him shows a different side. He attacked me online and sent hate mail over shared content, which isn't something a legend should do.
Vinnie is definitely a skilled drummer, but his behavior towards fans can be problematic. He sent me hate mail and struck my account for sharing videos of his performances.
Not only is Vinnie such a nice and down to Earth Bloke, but he´s my fav. HardRock/Metal Drummer. Just watch him play. There´s so much Passion there when he hits the Skins.....
I had the pleasure of playing at the troubadour in the 80s with his brother one night with a jam band for some buddy that was retiring and moving on. Definitely one of the highlights of my career
Doubt Vinny remembers, but I taught him Networking Essentials at a Computer School in the late 90's. Drove him home one night and talked about the BS reunion tour. He is an awesome drummer and an awesome person.
It's interesting to hear about your experience, but my interactions with Vinnie have been far from positive. He attacked me online for sharing videos of his performances, which was quite disappointing.
Went to a gig where Vinny got burnt when the dry ice machine blew up ,stafford hall in Bingley UK in the early 80s,40 mins break and at the end of the show it took 4 hours to drive 60 miles home when the snow set in .Would do it all again tomorrow.
One of my favorite drummers. Period. Saw Dio on the Last in Line Tour in Hawai'i. It was like Rainbow and Sabbath had a lovechild. Such an incredible show. I will never, ever forget RJD's voice and Vinny's drums that night...
Thankful that they played clubs in the 90s, because I was able to see them up close, and met them afterward! This was when Jeff Pilsen was on bass and Tracy G on guitar. All of them were the nicest guys, especially RJD, and signed autographs. Of the many times I’d seen Dio, that show was the best because of Pilsen’s harmony vocals with RJD. It took it to another level!
Heaven & Hell, w/.Megadeth & Down, was a killer concert , watched it from floor real close up front, it was a treat to see Dio w/ Tony, Geezer & Vinnie
I'm fortunate to share the same birthday as Ronnie, just different years. On my birthday, I always say a little prayer for him and wish him a happy birthday.
I love dehumanizer. I remember going to that concert, and it was loud and kick ass! I have the CD here right next to me. Dio was my favorite singer in the 80s by far. Great music!
Last Album with Dio from the Band "Heaven and Hell" was released in 2010, so by no means we are recycling the 80ies! Awesome interview and I always love infos about Dio and the Sabbath guys! Thanks for sharing!
Vinnie was spot on when he said in the 90s, bands started looking like the roadies! I agree completely with Vinnie--there needs to be a balance between what the hair metal guys were doing and grunge, where there was no stage presentation at all, You can entertain an audience without just being "all show and no go", but at the same time, don't go to the other extreme where you don't try to entertain at all--and the bands that came before--AC/DC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Rainbow---they struck that balance
Black Sabbath forming was one of the greatest things for heavy metal. Ozzy being fired from Black Sabbath was one of the greatest things for heavy metal. Ronnie James Dio leaving Black Sabbath was one of the greatest things for heavy metal
...saw Dio live in 84 on the Last in line tour..still to this day one of the best concerts I've ever been to...Vinnie is one of the best rockdrummers ever!
That dude is a living legend. I know how to pronounce his name now. Lol. What I like most about him besides his drumming, is he seems really down to earth.
Great interview ! I LOVED the DIO documentary on Netflix. Vinnie is a funny guy when he says, "What did he say ?" Asking Ronnie regarding Tony and Geezer's heavy accents.
Dear Vinny; THANK YOU for standing up for, and honoring Ronnie James Dio. My heart is absolutely broken that Ronnie was not inducted to the RHoF. I must be cautious as all my comments regarding said subject have been removed due to "inflammatory content". Isn't that what Rock and Heavy Metal are all about? I'm honored to have had the experience of watching and especially hearing you and Ronnie ROCK OUT! Always an amazing concert! 🤘
It's funny how I grew up admiring Carmine as my drum teacher had taken lessons from him so he was the God of drumming to his students. Fast forward 35 years and as a middle aged dude, I've come to the conclusion that I like Vinny's drumming waaaaay more than Carmine. Vinny also seems like his ego is in check and is down to earth whereas big bro Carmine could never really stay with any band longer than 5 years. I like this guy and he's a great drummer, definitely one of the top 10 all time rock drummers.
@@the_minimalistic_adventure Yeah, I totally feel that too. I just look at the track record and the fact that he could never really keep a gig other than King Kobra. He lost the Stewart and Ozzy gigs both due to his 'I'm the star' attitude. Vinny seems like a team player too where he doesn't need to be the start but know he's an important part of the band. Is hard to explain but he seems like he has good energy.
I can only think of maybe 4 drummers that when you hear them ,you know who they are ,for instance, Carmina Apice sounds like any other drummer ,but when Vinny plays ,you know it's definitely Vinny Apice playing, like when you hear John Bonham, you know it's him ,
Vinnie's drumming skills are undeniable, but his treatment of fans leaves much to be desired. He went out of his way to attack me online for sharing content related to his band.
Hey Vinnie . I know your nephew Vincent . I’ve played drums all of my Life . I owe a lot to you & your brother Carmen . I watched your videos & followed your techniques . Thank you .
Actually, after Sabbath disbanded,Dio and Vinnie had the great Jake E Lee jam first before Vivian Campbell, It's in the RJD autobiography book , mentioned by Wendy Dio too, she was managing Rough Cutt and they picked him out and then it was Vivian.
Also let's give credit to both the underrated Tony Martin and forgotten badass drummer Cozy Powell who had given Sabbath enough life so it didn't die out during the mid and late eighties.
I met Vinny in Charlotte at a small club called the Tremont . Very small crowd . He was with Kill Devil Hill . I stood right at the stage and he walked up and shook my hand a couple of times and thanked me for coming out . A few months later they returned to Charlotte to open for Portnoys band . He saw me standing across the street and got off the bus and walked over to where I was standing . He said " Hey man you were at the last show we played here ." He hung out with us for a while took pictures and signed stuff for us . For him to remember me like that was amazing . A super nice and genuine guy . I had the picture blown up and I'm waiting for him to come back around and sign it for me .

what a great episode!!! i have loved watching these videos from the beginning, being a die-hard fan of that era!! I've learned so much from some of the most important artists of that time. It's truly amazing!!! Please keep them coming!!!
Odd he never heard of Rainbow. Met him on the Heaven and Hell tour and had a Rainbow album with me for Dio to sign. Ronny never showed up so Vinnie signed it for me lol.
Vinny Appice is one of the best drummers out there, period, then and now.
Totally agree
Extremely underrated. Try and play his fills note for note. Good luck
Up there with Moon and Baker.

For sure one of the best, knew when to be slick, when to be a caveman, and when to shut up and let someone else shine.
Classy guy...
I can't believe it's been 12 yrs since the greatest hard rock vocalist left this earth...🥺

I saw Dio at a commercial low point. He played a theater that seated about 1K people. It was a f'ng awesome show though. He still put 100% into it.
Same , saw DIO in Lancaster PA it was a small venue but WoW was it Awesome 👌🏻 had to look it up , I think it was the Village Night Club

Listen to Vinnie's signature sound on Turn up the Night. Fantastic drummer and a very nice man. People like Vinnie deserve all the success they get
Great Song.
The Mob Rules album has the best sounding drums out of all Black Sabbath albums and it wasn't even from Bill Ward.

I am sincerely happy that he was clear on how to pronounce his last name. I have often wondered about it.

Vinny is so on point about Tony. The accident and what he did after ie. Metal fingertips, low tunings truly set the blueprint for heavy rock.
