when my kids were little, I would let them have a different batch of toys when the current ones were picked up. kinda like a library system. check in the old, check out the new. worked pretty good.

That would allow you to sanitize toys also especially if they are having any nasty symptoms.

For your toaster oven pan try Easy off oven cleaner that does not need heat. Make sure you buy the one that does not need heat. Spray it on & leave it for 10-15 minutes and then everything will just wipe away so easily. I use it on top of my stove for spill overs etc. A housekeeper showed me that trick.
Great idea taking away the kids toys. You teach them how to treat you (and their stuff). Id say depending on age, probably keep their toy room clean 3-5 days, earn a few back, continue to keep clean 3 more days, earn few more, etc etc.

Growing up if my mom had to take toys it was a 3 weeks non-negotiable, week 4 was assess the situation on how things have been kept (tidy or still messy) then would give them back week 4 or another 3 week imprisonment lol. If the same type of toys had to be taken away 3 times they got donated (I only ever made it to that once but I learned my lesson… now I’m a clean freak lol).

I would present the messy toys as a problem to your boys that they have to solve (they might need guidance). Then write a plan together and come up with consequences together if the plan isn’t followed. I often do some dodgy illustrations for kids who can’t read yet - or even better they can draw pictures that match the plan. For example they might want a pack up song, or a timer, and they might agree that if they don’t pack up more than 1 day in a week, they lose the toys for a week. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with their ideas. I’m a teacher and kids often come up with stricter plans than I ever would - but they follow them because it was their idea!

I made it a habit of having my son clean up his toys every evening at age 3 and onward. Like, we would eat dinner, then was cleanup time, then getting ready for bed and finally we'd cuddle and read a book. It helped tremendously to have him help with his toys (and later having him do it himself). I also made sure that each night when he got dressed for bed he would throw his clothes in the laundry. For snacks it was usually carrots and apples, so not so many crumbs around. But then again my son didn't really have an issue witu it, so i was fortunate. 😅

Another great video, Kiddo! You mom's today have so much more to juggle than I did when I was a young mother. I am a "new mother" again at 40 (totally planned) and I am at times overwhelmed by how much moms are expected to do compared to my when I had my first round of kids 20 years ago.

    • @tracywillis8460
      @tracywillis8460 3 года назад

I was all about "logical consequences" when first round of kids were growing up. I think you made a good decision to remove the toys they aren't caring for. I'd vote for a week before reintroducing one bin. If they can handle that for a week, introduce the next bin. You are a wise mother.

Only allow them to have one bin out at a time and have them pick them up after they are done playing with them. Make it a game to see who can pick up the most the fastest. You can also do a kitchen timer for them to pick them up or they lose them again.

In terms of your question: make clear why you take the small toys away and explain exactly what the kids have to do to get them back. It must be realistic and achievable. "Clean up all the toys of the floor before you go to bed" start small to give the "slob" a chance to find motivation by success.
You can also work with a sticker plan and remind them how often they have to follow to get them back. Kids don't really understand long term effects just yet.

hot cleaning tip - I've found that making a paste w/ baking soda, lemon juice and water is the BEST thing for getting caked on food stains from my oven! I have a feeling it would work for your toaster oven too. Just let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then use the scrub daddy (or a sponge that you are okay to part with, because it will be pretty gross lol)

The more kids the more stress, I have 7 and it was difficult when they were little, I just discovered this video today, I also know that it depends on where you live and how financially stable you are that plays a lot in to the stress as well, my children didn’t entertain each other, they wanted my attention and when I had my twins it was even worst, I wouldn’t change it , now I have 4 teenagers and 3 adult children and I am so happy that they are older.

My mum took away toys when things got too messy. My younger sister was the messy one and I was the clean one. I used to keep my room clean and she kept hers messy. We used to share a play room and it always felt like a losing battle against her to keep it clean. When my mum used to take away my favourite toys because my sister hadn’t tidied them away, it felt like I was being punished as well for my sisters crimes. Even as an adult I’m still bitter about it… maybe something for you to think about when trying to find the right balance between punishment and reward. It’s a near impossible task.

Might ask your sons' preschool teachers if they pick up toys at school. If they do, then ask them why they won't at home to see if they think it's because it's a mom's job, not theirs. Sometimes boys have to see men cleaning or they get funny ideas. Your book toy chest was brilliant because they know exactly where to put them. Maybe they need pictures on the storage boxes so they know what goes in what storage cubes/boxes. I'm a reading tutor and it always surprises me what children don't understand.

  • @chapterbichapter821

The study about four kids- I think it’s because mothers have the oldest help out (depending on the age gap).
I’m the second oldest out of five and my parents always had me watch over my sibling haha!
Toys- if they play with the toys that are left in the playroom and they pick up after themselves for a few days straight give them only one bin. If they continue to clean up after themselves then give them another bin and so on. If they don’t take them back.. that’s my guess haha.

Suggestion for Mai - When you go to purchase paint for the kids' rooms and common areas, be advised that there ARE paints that are designed to be more resistant to wear and tear and staining. (mainly preventing staining of the paint for easier cleaning). Be sure to ask a paint pro which types are currently available and go from there.

you can line the drip pan with aluminum foil so when you want to clean it, all you have to do is tak eit off, throw it out, and reapply a new layer.
Also for the kitchen tabled benches, you can get a flat weatherproofing foam "tape"-like stuff to "crumb-proof" the underseat storage bins.

Only give back one small pieces toys at a time or maybe two at a time. All of them is probably too many small pieces and just overwhelming to pick up for them. If they want a different small pieces toy assortment then they have to put one away and trade it in for the other.

I think by the time you have your fourth, some of the first kids are old enough to do a few things on thier own (get snacks, wipe butt, maybe even wipe a table) that what makes the stress lower, the first kids become a bit more in and or are old enough to help

My Mom was a preschool teacher for 30+ years and so I grew up helping at her school most of my life... maybe it would help if you rotate 2 sets of the small piece toys at a time for them. Maybe they are just too overwhelmed by too many choices to really fully play with things and it's too many small pieces that they just give up. Sort of the same way you are overwhelmed going in to clean up they are too but it's easier for them to just walk away (Mom will do it anyways). My Mom would set a timer for clean up time (10 - 20 min depending on how big of a mess we had) and the rule was anything still on the floor would get thrown away because we obviously didn't care about it enough to take care of the item(s). She said she only threw things away once (in a garbage bag) and once we figured out she meant it and we cried she agreed to go get it back out but they had to go away for a week or two and we could have them back if we took care of the rest of our toys. Maybe some colorful picture labels for each of the bins that each set goes in would help them know where things go so they wouldn't need as much help. Maybe bring one set out at a time. When they can clean that up completely (not perfectly, kids are less detail oriented but off the floor and majority into the right bin) maybe that is when you bring out a 2nd set and then so long as they continue to clean up both sets you could then swap sets after a couple weeks and hopefully the idea sticks, or you can just do one set at a time. Sorry this is so long of a comment! But this is what came to mind during that part of the video. I think you are a great Mom and am always so excited when I see a new video from you :-)

The small piece toys: maybe if you put them there long enough they'll forget about them! I just want to remind people that most of us grew up with out all of this and we were just as happy, so no guilt! :)

What kind of oven is that and do you like it? I'm thinking of getting a toaster oven/air fryer combo.

About cleaning up: did you try to do it with them? That is how we did it for a long time and still do it. We help them and guide them. But they are now able to doit in their own. Small kids get easily overwhelmed and need precise guidance: put this toy in that bin. But I know, it can really be a struggle.

I know you’re not supposed to put aluminum foil in the bottoms of ovens. I like to live on the wild side and do it anyway…haha. I wonder if it would help your counter top oven stay cleaner if you did it.

My parents would do something similar when we would refuse to clean out playroom. Expect they would throw out the toys. I remember one little yellow trailer for matchbox cars that I saved from the trash a few times.

There is a reason that I cant have a
headbord on my bed. It's because I will be lazy and throw things under my bed... (and that is a self choice.)

From experience each child has their own unique personality therefore their own unique preferences/problems. More is NEVER easier. Being organized makes it easier. For instance the rhythm of caring for children becomes habitual. Just look at your own videos of wouldn't buy items. What works and what doesn't. You can have an "easy" baby or a "difficult" baby at any birth. I had one who could sleep through anything followed by one who if you breathed wrong would be cranky awake. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️Whatever you decide is what you work with. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

Is it super rude of me to ask if adderall is involved when you take on these tasks. (I have adhd and am off my meds while pregnant and struggling to keep my life in order so thank you for your baby product and registry content as well as this motivating video!)

I don’t take adderall anymore. Some days I wish I had it, but I’ve learned how to keep going without it 😁
