Hello Ladies! This is EASILY my most anticipated episode of this series and it did not disappoint!!! I have LOTS to say. My introduction to Shabana Azmi was in 2007 at the age of 10 whilst I was living with relatives in India. She was a guest judge on Indian Idol 3 and I remember her dressed in the most stunning black kurta/salvar kameez and being majorly surprised that this was Javed Akhtar's wife. One of the contestants that season prior to Shabana being a guest judge had sung Tujhse Naraaz Nahin and I got told that's from a Shanana Azmi movie and I became obsessed with that song to the point I had it transferred via Bluetooth on my Nokia flip phone 😅 and relatives were shocked I liked such an old school song. Around the same time, I also watched Honeymoon Travels Pvt Lmt and as a child the movie was funny (an an adult AVOID YAAR) but I remember being so taken by a moment where she was crying in the bathroom. Cut to when I moved to the UK circa 2011 and during my teens, I properly got into cinema and I remember watching anything and everything of all genres and countries. Chronologically... I first watched Masoom with my mother and we both were in HYSTERICS, I then watched Arth and was BAWLED by this woman's performance. When I visited Nepal and India again after my year 10 studies ended, on the long flight coincidentally enough they had a Shabana Azmi season with a lot of her movies and even a documentary! I watched the documentary where the likes of even Richard Gere were heaping praises at her and Sparsh where she was absolutely DIVINE and I would absolutely recommend it. I do think her and Naseerudhin make for a brilliant pair and should be spoken more of. After that I sort of went off cinema due to university although I had watched Khandaar before my first week of university (I enjoyed it but Mom wasn't too keen on parallel cinema) but around lockdown I watched Mandi and Ankur and my goodness!!! This woman's talent is truly astounding and I'm beyond so happy that unlike many who never got their flowers, Shabana Azmi got her rightful due. However, this is Shabana so of course she's got 5 National Awards with 3 of them being consecutive ones. I also love that in this episode, as the superstar's career is so rich that not a single mention of her romantic life ever took place. I would have been intrigued to find out either of your thoughts on Azmi's relationship and rivalry with Smita Patil though. I must say I am now intrigued to see more of masala Shabana thoug and Lorie/Lohdi sounds absolutely insane 😂. I remember in an interview, maybe it's even on Twinkle Khanna's Icon series on her RUclips channel where Shabana says that although she's proud of her performance in Ankur, she can't get past how her eyebrows are so neatly threaded when she's meant to be an impoverished woman and it's the one gripe she has regarding it. I just find that so endearingly hilarious. Thank you so so much for this wonderful episode. 💜💜💜 Always love your content but I'm absolutely beyond excited next for the Kareena Kapoor superstar episode.
