Filmi Ladies episode 126: watching the rainbow: black
This is the first episode in a new series about films we associate with particular colors. Black may be the most complicated color, evoking traits from elegance and edge to sadness, anger, mourning, and destructiveness. For a color that can be so striking, it often screams "don't look too closely."
Neither of us could resist choosing a black and white film, but that's where the similarities end: Satyajit Ray's Nayak (Bengali, 1966), where black is cool, distant, and protective, and Bramayuagam (Malayalam, 2024), where black is unstable and unknowable.
P.S. Pitu discovered that there are two words for the color brown in Marathi - tapkiri and badami.

    Hi! First of all, congratulations on so many episodes!! I was great with keeping up with you guys in the beginning (I think) and then got lost with a million personal changes, but am so happy to be back :) Loved this episode!! I've honestly not watched Madhuri movies as much, because I think similar to what Beth said, the era when she was a star didn't work much for me, and those movies are really very painful to watch in unfortunately. But I love watching her songs and watching Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! 😅

    Love both the movies and the discussion was fun to listen to. I like that you talked about Vijay’s character too because yes when I watched this movie it was confusing to me why he called off the wedding and then later on within a few weeks changed his mind. What an irritating fellow. Good for her though. I listened to your episode on the bollywood drafts podcast recently and watched Sangam (1964) because you all spoke so effusively about it and… I think that movie has changed me in some subliminal way. Altered brain chemistry and all that. And it somehow fits with the theme of this episode? Like I love how strong Radha’s character is and how she tries to make the best of what life has to offer her. Spoilers🚨She learns how to love a man she didn’t love initially and gives it her all to her marriage and finds a new version of herself when she didn’t have to do that. Like Sunder loved her even when she was cold and distant towards him so she didn’t have to put all the extra efforts to be a devoted wife to him but she does that and it’s so sweet. It’s like she’s still the same person- she’s still a little spoilt and proud (the way she says “bohot aaye jaake dikhane wale” with a tinge of haughtiness is so beautiful like she already knows he isn’t going anywhere) and she would bicker with her husband about shopping- but at the same time she’s a new person like something has shifted in her- she would buy him the bagpipe! It’s a bit sad but so sweet. I loved her character so much and I love how she deals with whatever life brings to her not resentfully but with joy. And I guess I really needed to take in that message as we enter this new year🚨 Loved the movie!! The dialogues omg so good. And vyjayanthimala!! What an actress. Love her💗 I am so excited to explore her filmography this year.

      @ananyaroy97 Yes, Vijay is sooo annoying but also RR plays him so well. Vyjyanthimala is the perfect combo of beautiful, noble and haughty. 😀 Even when she plays a gaon ki gori like in Ganga Jamuna she's still haughty hehe. Yes, I love her in Sangam..she deserved better heros though lol. Beth and I are going on Bolly Drafts soonish. But on different episodes. Fun fun episode! Happy new year, filmi ladies. I love this podcast💗 “Yeh haseen vadiyan sounds like snow fall” so accurate. The movie I associate with snow the most is Love in Simla 1960. Such a fun, light-hearted, silly movie and so sexy. There’s not a lot of literal snow in it and I guess that’s because they were afraid that all of it would melt because of the fire chemistry between sadhana and joy mukherjee but there is a fair amount of snow and the Simla setting is beautiful. Beth's watchlist sounds very interesting. I have been making my way through Sridevi's filmography for the past few years and I liked Inquilab. It's definitely worth watching and it's better than their other collab Akhree Raasta but not as good as Khuda Gawah. I am on her 70s Tamil filmography this year and it's way superior in terms of the quality of storytelling to what she mostly got to do in early 80s mainstream Hindi films. 16 Vayathinile is a must-watch. Beth... You've put it perfectly as to what I take issue with Kajol as an actress, "moments where she was doing a nice job and moments where she was super irritating". Having seen early Kajol, peak era Kajol, 2000s Kajol and streaming era Kajol, I could never put a finger as to what is it that stops me from fully loving her but I now see that there's no sort of balance in her dialogue delivery, she's either super explosive which reads off as shrill and when she's not explosive, she doesn't really pull of being the character instead coming across as Kajol the person playing pretend. The only time where I believe in any of her performances is when she's crying, that is something she's super good at and honestly she will always be one of my favourite on screen cryers. I think the only performance of hers I have been fully impressed by her was in Gupt (1997). I just wish she could find a sense of balance with her characterisation because there's such room for greatness but she has confessed to being a lazy actor which is a shame as I'm never enamoured by her performances despite her being such a renowned actress. I look forward to her Superstars episode because I have so much to say about her as an actress and a personality.

My only Indian comfort movie I have to say is Junglee lol. Shammi never fails to cheer me up. Preity Zinta not getting the Filmfare for this will forever be my Roman Empire and the fact that the Best Actress went to Rani for HUM TUM!?!?! of all things... I will never get over it. I stil remember how much of an event this movie was in 2004. That image of SRK and Preity embracing each other and with her black dupatta/shawl is so iconic to me because of how it was plastered everywhere when the film was coming to theatres. Watching it as a child, the film didn't quite land but I remember finding SRK and Preity very sweet especially when he's taking her to his village. However, watching it as an adult... Good GRACIOUS I was completely won over and I just couldn't believe just how much Veer and Zaara loved each other this immensely.

Also love the director and actors from Marathi industry: Sachin Kundalkar has made a movie called Wazandar which I think you two would enjoy. Idk if its available online or has subtitles but the subject matter at hand is quite universal. Rani has killed it with her acting, comic timing and dance 🔥 At one point, she speaks three languages altogether in one monologue while maintaining the comedic timing and flippant nature of the movie 🙌 she’s awesome! Prithviraj spoke in an interview how the whole point of the movie was to flip the narrative and to a degree, satirise rom coms because the man is the object of affection or desire for a change. Great to hear that, in addition how incredible he acted in the movie! ❤️

    Recently discovered your podcast! Loved the movies Beth mentioned: Dor and Parched are my absolute favourites🫶✨ I adore the scenes where Aisha Takia’s character shyly dances to the ‘You are my Sonia’ song, considered promiscuous in that context; and Gul Panag, Shreyas Talpade helping her come out of her shell🥹❤️ Loved Angry Indian Goddesses too; quite a traumatic watch but great acting by the cast. Rajashri Deshpande is the only one I know from the cast who went on to be more popular with Sacred Games and Trial by Fire. She’s amazing! Also love Lajja, the scene when Madhuri delivers the monologue as Sita in their stage play, gives me chills every time I watch it. And similar fiery monologue against dowry in the previous segment of the movie🤌 Honourable mentions I thought of while watching this ep: • Anjali Menon’s Wonder Woman • Cute friendship between Deepika and Kalki in YJHD. Not a major plot of the romcom, but I liked how different they were and yet got along so well with each other. • Another traumatic story but great friendship shown between Rani Mukherjee and Konkona in Laga Chunari me Daag. Even though they’re sisters, they have a lovely friendship/relationship with each other.

      @filmiladies A son, dismissed as "good for nothing" by his family, is the only one who truly cares that his retired father can’t afford to marry off his sister. While his elder brothers (and their partners) sit back and do nothing, this so-called "useless" son, who spends his days playing soccer, sacrifices his sporting career by selling an organ to protect his father’s honor. Not the strongest plot, perhaps? The cast, featuring well-known film and TV actors, including Amrita, delivered solid performances. This was one of Anil Kapoor’s early films, before he became a big-banner star, and he portrayed his role brilliantly, much like his spot-on portrayal of a neighborhood boy in Chameli Ki Shaadi.

    • @filmiladies
      @filmiladies 2 месяца назад

      @maheshparab9744 Horrible and schmaltzy. Let's sell a kidney yay! Save our family! There are so many 80s movies with this exact idea of selling an organ or donating plasma or a woman character agreeing to marry some psycho all for some balidaan idea. Yeah he's the only son who actually cares about his dad, everyone else is selfish but that plot is overdone and ridiculous. A far better movie would be something like Bawarchi (I know Rajesh is not a son, just a cook) where he shows a mirror to the selfish sons and helps them improve themselves without any of this organ selling nonsense. -Pitu

    • @maheshparab9744
      @maheshparab9744 2 месяца назад

      @filmiladies While I completely agree this is a typical 1980s Hindi movie plot-full of rona-dhona, tyaag, and parivar ki izzat-it seems like the same standards aren’t applied across the board when discussing other movies or actors. If we accept shallow plots because the hero or heroine are eye candy in tight shorts, we shouldn’t criticize another conventional plot simply because it lacks that glamour. I think Saaheb, if given the Barjatya/Chopra/Johar treatment, might have been viewed in a better light. 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • @filmiladies
      @filmiladies 2 месяца назад

      @maheshparab9744 No, it is not double standards. There are two aspects to movies. One is content and the other is treatment. There are plenty of absolutely idiotic movies I enjoy while knowing they are idiotic, purely because they are entertaining. For eg K3G. It's melodramatic, full of tyag and izzat and stupidity but it's also massively entertaining. I also enjoy Jab tak hai jaan - an incredibly lazy movie with horrid writing and stupid characters that make no sense. I enjoy it because of the visuals, cinematography and songs. A friend who is a filmmaker absolutely loves Hum aapke hain Kaun- a movie I cannot stand - only because it's fun and eye candy and because of the music. When you say the film would be better received if it were made by Chopras or Barjatyas - yes 100% because they know how to make entertaining stuff esp their strong emphasis on good music. But even they have snoozefests that no one likes. For eg who talks about Chopra's Vijay or Faasle or Parampara? They're dumb and boring, which is a death knell. A lot of films get by despite poor writing and direction because they're fun to watch. I literally enjoy Feroz Khan's Yalgaar. It's not a well made movie at all. But it's fun. Then there is Qurbani which is well made AND fun. A film needs to either be very well made or entertaining or ideally both. Saaheb is literally none of those things. Why should anyone watch it? - Pitu

    I am really missing Sridevi these days a lot. Whenever I miss sri and I don’t get the time to rewatch any of her movies, I listen to one of her interviews from english vinglish era or rewatch this episode to listen to you all gush about her. This episode gives me genuine joy and warmth, kind of like how watching sri’s performances makes me feel. It’s sad that there aren’t many podcasts or discussions on sri out there on the internet as far as I know. This episode perfectly captures the wonder that she was. The only other videos that analyse or deconstruct her stardom and talent are the b rangan film companion south’s ama video about her and adil hussain’s interview where he talks about her acting style and exactly why she’s considered so great. What a wonderful analysis by him. Sri was all about joy and beauty and happiness. She was the perfect portrayal of female exultation. I think the way Amitabh taught an entire generation of men in the 70s and 80s how to be a man with his angry young man trope and then srk did the same in 2000s with his romantic hero trope; for women, if there was someone who taught them how to be a woman it had to be sridevi right? Especially with Chandni. The analysis in your discussion is so spot-on: she could be so cute and sexy at the same time. We see these traits being deconstructed for the audience especially in lamhe where with pooja, she is the buoyant, innocent, childlike woman and with pallavi she is so graceful, stoic and mysterious. Moondram Pirai/ Sadma stretches these tropes even farther and she literally is a child and a woman in the movie. By the way, the sridevi smile you talk about melts my heart. The way she blinks her eyes!! She is like a deer. The only other heroine who like sri, could simultaneously be both cute and sultry onscreen is marilyn monroe as far as I know. Makes sense that sri would give a tribute to her Diamonds are a girl’s best friend in gumraah’s yeh hai daarukhana. I am so glad you discussed kshana kshanam because it is one of my favourite movies ever. I loved her chemistry with venkatesh and they complement each other well. The songs are so good!! Especially jumbaye and andanantha ettha. The only other heroes I like her chemistry with are nagarjuna, sunny deol (only for the aesthetic and the sexual tension) and kamal haasan (mainly for the acting). Kausar Munir recounts an incident with sridevi in an interview. While shooting, mid-monologue in a scene in English Vinglish, Sridevi suddenly stopped and got out of character and when gauri and the DOP asked her what happened? she said to the DOP that the camera had stopped rolling and indeed it had. When the DOP asked her how did she know? She replied that she had been doing this since she was three years old. What an interesting anecdote that says so much about her and her relationship with the camera. An interviewer asked Sridevi once: people say that the camera loves you, are you aware of this? Sri replied: actually I always felt that it’s the other way around. I love the camera. And I think that answer speaks volumes about the actor and the star that she was. One of the greatest the world has ever known. No one comes to close to her legacy🩷🩷🩷

I always find it funny when pitu calls her moaning myrtle because for years I'd only ever seen meena kumari in fun light hearted stuff like Kohinoor. I lurved her in Yaudhi, she was so spunky and sparkly and it's a really good watch. It's funny how she and dilip were called the tradegy king and queen but their moveies together were really light and fun. Even in dil apna preet parahi and my fav Pakeezah I found her to be more stoic and brooding rather than weepy. (I don't consider pakeezah a tradjedy either, it's just a beautiful soulful film). I realise there is alot of other moany cry cry then song then more cry stuff out there but if you give it a shot you might be pleasantly surprised. I avoided sahib biwi aur ghulam for years because it just sounded too depressing... I was wrong. Both her and waheeda are spectacular. For meena it's all in the eyes... The first 15 seconds of her in the song 'chalte' chalte', her quite face tells you everything. I have a soft spot for the 90s heroines, they're my childhood. I wanted to be madhuri when I grew up. Listen, ya'll know I love this podcast and I am just hear for the fun of it but at this point we´re doing pretty much anyone for this series, right? Next "Superstar" episode is Neha Dhupia I am assuming? Or Esha Deol? Shiney Ahuja maybe? I am just teasing ya´ll but come on. Calling Meenakshi Sheshadri a Superstar is like calling Sonali Bendre a Superstar. Yeah people might´ve liked her on screen, she might´ve been popular in her time but a Superstar is one hell of a stretch. I remember Beth saying Preity Zinta doesn't quite qualify for this series cause "she didnt last long enough" , someone who to this day still has such a strong, big fan base, so if she doesn´t qualify, then HOW in the world does Meenakshi qualify 😂 Now I am FOR SURE demanding a Preity Zinta episode, cause it just wouldn´t be fair. You cannot place Meenakshi above her, when the second Meenakshi stopped making movies, everyone and their mother accepted it and never demanded a comeback ever. Meenakshi may be a lot of things but a Superstar is not one of them, that is an objective fact 🤣no but seriously, I hope you take this comment with a grain of salt, ofc opinions can differ and thats the beauty of engaging about personal points of views and choices, and a choice this was! dont hate me😂 can´t wait for the Celina Jaitley episode, hoping for Fardeen Khan next and ofc Bhumika Chawla, the great Superstar of our times, ok ok i´ll stop now😂love yall (but now i am seriously expecting manisha koirala, preity zinta, priyanka chopra, KATRINA kaif, who i know yall dont like, but now you have to😂) anyway keep up the great work, this is so enjoyable to listen to

    • @mra7787
      @mra7787 3 месяца назад

      You may not like Meenakshi but don’t compare her career to the likes of Neha Dhupia. Neha never really made it to A-list movie status whilst Meenakshi most definitely did. This episode needed a true Meenakshi fan, awaargi her movie with Govinda, her nagin movie Nache nagin gali gali, her act in allah raka, the doli keke yahan song in particular and then shahenshah. hero could have been one of the movies you guys watched. The hit songs mera saajan, pyar karne wale and her classic dance in nindiya ke jaagi bahaar would ensure she was definitely amongst the 80s top heroines. The problem with this episode was the hosts weren’t true Meenakshi fans who really knew her work. They could have just complied a superstar star ladies of the 80s special including her with poonam, rati, amrita, jaya prada, tina munim and padmini kolhapuree for a well fleshed out episode on heroines of the 80s
