Filmi Ladies episode 113: Meenakshi Sheshadri (superstars series 17)
We are firmly in the 80s now as Meenakshi Seshadri is our first 80s superstar.
A beautiful, talented actress and dancer, she doesn't get talked about as much as she should - and we are a bit puzzled as to why.
Are you a Meenakshi fan and do you consider her a superstar? Which of her films or performances do you enjoy?
Films discussed: Ghayal, Ghar Ho To Aisa, Swati, and Dilwaala. We have both seen and love Damini but completely forgot to cover it; obviously she is amazing in it and it is essential to her legacy!
(PS Beth realizes she said "I have heard so much about Meenakshi over the years" AND "I must not have heard that many people talking about her," and obviously those cannot both be t...

To celebrate the birthday of the great Rekha, we watched Utsav (1984), Girish Karnad's adaptation of the ancient Sanskrit play Mrichakatika. In our totally unbiased opinion this is Rekha's film through and through, but really everyone and everything else is great, with one exception that you can probably guess. I am still waiting, hope against hope, for a full on 2hr meena kumari episode guys. 😂 I mean if you can do 53 mins on meenakshi... Jus saying! I always find it funny when pitu calls her moaning myrtle because for years I'd only ever seen meena kumari in fun light hearted stuff like Kohinoor. I lurved her in Yaudhi, she was so spunky and sparkly and it's a really good watch. It's funny how she and dilip were called the tradegy king and queen but their moveies together were really light and fun. Even in dil apna preet parahi and my fav Pakeezah I found her to be more stoic and brooding rather than weepy. (I don't consider pakeezah a tradjedy either, it's just a beautiful soulful film). I realise there is alot of other moany cry cry then song then more cry stuff out there but if you give it a shot you might be pleasantly surprised. I avoided sahib biwi aur ghulam for years because it just sounded too depressing... I was wrong. Both her and waheeda are spectacular. For meena it's all in the eyes... The first 15 seconds of her in the song 'chalte' chalte', her quite face tells you everything. I have a soft spot for the 90s heroines, they're my childhood. I wanted to be madhuri when I grew up. But going through this superstar series it really hits home - there's just some magic in those early leading ladies, I don't think we'll ever get back.

Listen, ya'll know I love this podcast and I am just hear for the fun of it but at this point we´re doing pretty much anyone for this series, right? Next "Superstar" episode is Neha Dhupia I am assuming? Or Esha Deol? Shiney Ahuja maybe? I am just teasing ya´ll but come on. Calling Meenakshi Sheshadri a Superstar is like calling Sonali Bendre a Superstar. Yeah people might´ve liked her on screen, she might´ve been popular in her time but a Superstar is one hell of a stretch. I remember Beth saying Preity Zinta doesn't quite qualify for this series cause "she didnt last long enough" , someone who to this day still has such a strong, big fan base, so if she doesn´t qualify, then HOW in the world does Meenakshi qualify 😂 Now I am FOR SURE demanding a Preity Zinta episode, cause it just wouldn´t be fair. You cannot place Meenakshi above her, when the second Meenakshi stopped making movies, everyone and their mother accepted it and never demanded a comeback ever. Meenakshi may be a lot of things but a Superstar is not one of them, that is an objective fact 🤣no but seriously, I hope you take this comment with a grain of salt, ofc opinions can differ and thats the beauty of engaging about personal points of views and choices, and a choice this was! dont hate me😂 can´t wait for the Celina Jaitley episode, hoping for Fardeen Khan next and ofc Bhumika Chawla, the great Superstar of our times, ok ok i´ll stop now😂love yall (but now i am seriously expecting manisha koirala, preity zinta, priyanka chopra, KATRINA kaif, who i know yall dont like, but now you have to😂) anyway keep up the great work, this is so enjoyable to listen to

I was obsessed with Laila Majnu a couple of years ago. I think I am over that obsession. What a great movie! There's a Punjabi movie called Moh (2022) which is based on Heer Ranjha's love story and I loved that too. Heer-Ranjha, Laila-Majnu have similar stories. There's a poem from Bihar Lali's Satasai which I really like and I think it fits their love: She was in such a daze she sent him a wordless letter. He was in such a daze he read it with rapt attention. I like stories about love and yearning but I usually like it more when they have a happy ending. Another poet-I-don't-remember-the-name-of asked: if you're not yearning, is it really love? That bit about Devdas and Majnu comparison made me pause and think. I fast-forwarded through Bad Newz and didn't like whatever bits I watched. I am looking forward to watching Jigra. Alia is an amazing actress and usually makes good movies. I loved laila majnu so much! Tripti and Avinash are absolute stars. The way the second half unfolded was so unexpected even though I know the beats of the Laila Majnu story. The scene where he faints is so moving and the scene when the person with mental health issues is abused and the response of that person is so deep. The movie stayed with me, like very few have so I went down the rabbit hole of watching leads do promotion and their interviews about its failure. I still keep singing oh meri laila thumping my chest. Just an awesome awesome movie maybe what rockstar was trying to be - a film about the profound impact of longing. Avinash is such a brilliant hero in this - a lead hero performance like I have never seen before - swaggering arrogance to someone you just have so much empathy for. In the shahrukh Devdas I couldn't understand why people cared about this character and went out of their way to help him. It was the opposite in this film. I also loved madgoan express!

Hello, I was on a social media detox. I don’t know why I do that because I always end up over-consuming youtube and instagram content whenever I’m back. Excited to catch up on all the episodes that I’ve missed so far. I saw Taal with my cousins on a movies night long ago. I still remember that night. We decided to watch campy movies like Dil Aashna Hai, Main Prem Ki Diwani et al but everyone fell asleep soon so my elder cousin, who I look up to the most generally but specifically for her views and recommendations on movies, played Anjaam and Taal for the two of us (totally opposite genres now that I think of it). She loves Madhuri and Aishwarya actually. Needless to say, I loved both the films. I loved Taal for all the reasons you have listed. The story is wholesome. I like both the main characters Manav and Mansi a lot. They are such good people and it’s nice to see a movie about good people. It is rare to see a man who is kind and caring and non-toxic like Manav nowadays what with Kabir Singh and Animal becoming so popular. I found it cute how he kept the scarf she made for him with him at all times. I found the flirting through cold drinks very cute too. In fact, it is one of my fave romantic scenes where the hero and heroine share a cup or glass furtively (or not) as a way of telling the other “yeah I’m into you”. The movie 3 with Dhanush and Shruti Haasan and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna have similar scenes. Older Asha had a great and unique vocal texture. I love her vocals in Sharara and Lucky Lips too. Aishwarya Rai has a stunning personality and she’s a very talented actress. Even though she’s so popular I still feel she’s underrated lol. Loved her walk at the Paris fashion week yesterday. It’s all over my insta and it is so wholesome to see the love and appreciation she’s getting!

@1245jo Thanks so much for the comment. Social media detoxing is great. I have a 30 min time limit for insta lol. Agree with your points about Taal. Anjaam is also a great movie! I love how Madhuri's character really goes all in on the revenge. I root for her all the way. Yes, love Asha's older voice. Sharara was SUCH a bop. That song was so popular for a while, and the only interesting thing Shamita has ever done haha. I love Ash's appearances. There was also a lovely photo of hers with Eva Longoria and Camilla. You can see the warmth she shares with Eva! Honestly she looks so much happier when she's without the Bachchans weighing her down. She looked happy at the recently held SIIMA awards where she won for Ponniyin Selvan. - Pitu

      @1245jo 23 дня назад

@@filmiladies thank you for the episode! I enjoyed it. I wanted Madhuri’s revenge bits in Anjaam to be more protracted, more unhinged but it’s a good movie nonetheless. I love watching Ash’s fan interactions. There was a fan who gave her some gifts and it was the cutest thing. She seems like a genuinely nice person to me and yeah, she seems happier with her international and south colleagues and fans than she looks in bollywood. It’s honestly so cool, empowering and badass to watch the mother-daughter duo go to Dubai and Paris and all these fancy places and just spend some good and fun time together. She’s a fighter and I love her for it. I recently discovered how weird the Bachchan’s are (after the Ambani wedding). Lately, I’ve been disappointed with Abhishek. He looked like a supportive, caring hubby but alas! The things I’ve learnt about his dad have scared me. That man is a weirdo. Jaya is, oh well. I don’t want to drag another woman but she’s not the best mother-in-law out there is she. I saw a reel on how Sharmila talks about her daughter-in-law and then how Jaya talks about hers and let’s just say there’s a zameen-asmaan ka farak in the two answers.

Taal is one of my comfort movies so it was so lovely to listen to this episode💜 especially the bits where you talked about manavsi’s future together + the analysis of manav’s character, spot on!! Adorable. They do share amazing intellectual and emotional compatibility! I love how this movie is still talked about and remembered with so much fondness and even though it is not as popular as say kuch kuch hota hai, it has given so much to pop culture! I love Aishwarya in Taal!!🥰 This movie marks the transition from baby aish to the fully formed starry aish I think. That anecdote about Mita Vashisht actually made aish even more endearing to me. Mita is amazing to watch in this. I loove baby aish sm💗💗 Agree regarding how she hasn’t performed rage? very often so kahin aag lage is amazing, it’s like suppressed rage, anguish. Actually I was thinking Aishwarya, Rooney Mara, Keira Knightley and Suchitra Sen are kind of similar in ways I can’t understand but I know for sure that she could pull it off and would have loved to watch Aishwarya in a Lisbeth Salander role!!

I think Ranbir's experimental phase is over he seems to be going for full commercial 'make the bucks' type movies. The last off beat movie was maybe Tamasha? I'm not sure Ranbir will direct either, he possibly would have done it by now and he is such a big star and he seemed burnt by being a producer on Jagga Jasoos.

Ranbir has always given me the ick. Good actor but quite overrated in my opinion. My favorite movie of his is Barfi and it’s also his best performance to me. I absolutely hate Rockstar, his performance and the movie, just unbearable. And absolutely hate Ae dil hai mushkil. He also just has a very punchable face that I can’t take to watch longer than maybe 30 minutes. The movies of his that I have watched are only because someone else is involved that I am interested in. His personality off screen also gives me the ick, but overall as an actor he does nothing for me. The only good take away that I have from ranbir Kapoor movies is that they usually have good music. More than any other actor of his generation, he has a long list of hit songs, probably even more than Hrithik and Shahid who have debuted before him and definitely more than ranveer, varun or siddhart. But I’d rather watch any of these actor than ranbir. If you think my opinion on ranbir is harsh than I shouldn’t even share my opinion of rishi Kapoor or even neetu kapoor for that matter. They are all very icky to me. And ranbir is the epitome of mera raja beta. Anyway I love channa mereya tho or agar tum saath ho, kun faya kun, kabira etc. maybe I’ll just stick to the songs.

Oh thank you so much for saying that at 16:32. Most people say that her features are Eurocentric and that she fits western standards of beauty when actually her features are quite Indian!! Very South Indian to be specific. I mean you look at Bipasha and you just know that she’s a Bengali. The same goes for Aishwarya, you just know she’s from the south (I would not have guessed that she’s a Tulu had I not known that beforehand though). Agree about Bipasha, she’s stunning and very under-appreciated imo! I am an Aishwarya fan/ stan/ enthusiast, have been since I was a little girl and I saw her in Taal on dvd for the first time. Honestly, the reason why she’s considered the most beautiful woman in the world is not because “euro-cenntric features” it’s because she has a face that is able to captivate and enchant the imagination and emotions of millions across the world. I don’t know how else to describe it but if we want to get into the details, there is a RUclips channel that analyses hollywood celebs and makes videos that go “why so and so celebrity looks attractive” and in one of the videos they analysed Aishwarya’s face too. Can’t remember what the channel is called. More than the video analysis though I liked the comments section because it was mostly Indians praising aish and one of them described her face as having the “same dimension as anime characters” and oh so true. In her own song “Mann Mohini” a lyric goes “mitti pe kheechi lakeerein rab ne toh yeh tasveer bani” and oh so true. Yes again!! Regarding her “Josh” look. I love and find the natural look make up on aish the best although she looks really good in Devdas too. I have a lot to say regarding her makeup but I don’t want to digress. I’ll just say that despite her being a scorpio, a winter girl and an "icy" person going by the media reports, warm colours and makeup suits her the best. Again agree, Dhoom 2 is definitely the only movie where she’s being “sexy” in a way that is trying to cater to the male gaze alone. In an interview with Farooq Sheikh, Aishwarya talked about how trying to act seductive or sexy was so tough, uncomfortable for her in her first ad shoot and that she had to do 21 retakes for just saying “hi I’m Sanjana”. I think she’s so great/ amazing/ perfect when and her acting style is very effective in playing characters in whom the sexiness is written into the character rather than just appearing sexy. She was so sexy as Saba in Ae dil hai mushkil for example or as Kalpana in iruvar or binodini in Chokher Bali, even in Ponniyin Selvan!! In these movies, the sexiness was written as a character trait and not just decided by what they wore or how her characters acted around men. Of course, she’s sexy in Dhoom 2 also but it’s very staged and like you said, there doesn’t seem to be anything carefree. Having said that I adore ✨Sunehri✨ She is so dorky it’s cute. I mean you just know Sunehri probably loves playing tomb raider and sims 3 when she’s not busy thinking about stealing things in Amsterdam, Australia, America even or simping for Aryan. Dhoom 2 is the best in the franchise of course. It is such a fu…nny movie like. I can’t believe we got like Aishwarya and Hrithik flirting with each other onscreen through a sword fight (Jodhaa Akbar) AND a basketball match (Dhoom 2) like!! What gorgeous, gorgeous humans they are and what a kissing scene! Whenever I watch this movie I have to brace myself for that scene because oof I can’t believe we got this scene!!?? There’s a reddit post discussing this particular scene and someone shared that this scene was “the moment” of pop culture back then and like I get it, it is awkward but it is iconic. Apparently it was in the papers with titles like “only Hrithik’s hotness could melt the ice queen” referring to the no-kissing rule in her contract until then. Poor Aishu got legal notices from people for that scene. Such fu…nny people. What a fun episode! 💗💗💗 I haven’t rewatched this movie in a long time and now I want to. Sorry for writing such long comments about Aishwarya. Thank you for coming to my ted talk 🤧

Hum Dono: I revisited "Hum Dono" last year, after having watched it several times before. My earliest memory of the film is from when I was in 2nd grade, watching it as part of the one-movie-a-week rationing on Doordarshan. The next day at school, kids were mimicking the soldiers in the trenches, only to get scolded at home for ruining their uniforms. In the scene with Gajanan Jagirdar and Dev Anand, I interpret Dev's character as having his pride wounded when his prospective father-in-law offers him a life of luxury through marriage. Dev leaves without realizing that Gajanan Jagirdar’s character didn't mean to insult him-this becomes evident when the old man realizes Dev has left. The drama that unfolds after Dev's return, when he goes to inform Nanda and Lalita Pawar about his superior being MIA in the war, is a situational tragedy. Dev’s character is so preoccupied with easing their pain that he mistakenly assumes Sadhana, who comes to his house, is already married to someone else. At this point, he is unaware of his mother's death, which Sadhana later reveals to him. From that moment, he feels more duty-bound to Nanda and Lalita Pawar, leading to a lack of clear communication with Sadhana. It's important to understand that his character is a product of his time. Even today, men showing emotion is often frowned upon, and this story takes place during WWII-one can only imagine the pressure. @Pitu - Thanks for sharing the story of your Grandfather who fought in WWII. I have similar one where Hum Dono must have contributed to an educated but struggling to find job youth joining Armed Forces in around the time the movie was released. And that pattern is still prevalent in India, where unemployment leads youth to armed forces. More than the passion to serve the country, its the need to support their families and improve the living conditons that is the driver. The Magical Lighter: If someone ever creates a museum dedicated to Hindi cinema, one item I would love to see in the gift shop is a lighter that plays the iconic tune from the film. Gajanan Jagirdar Trivia: Watch one of his earliest movie "Shejari (1941). Brilliant actor. His last film was "Tum Mere Ho," starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, where he has a particularly hilarious line. Lalita Pawar: She was one of the most naturally talented actresses in Indian cinema. The strength of character she displays after learning her son is MIA is simply remarkable. She had a string of brilliant roles throughout her career. Leela Chitnis: On the other hand, Leela Chitnis often portrayed the forever-whining mother, with a penchant for driving her kids away. She continues that tradition in this film as well. Nau Do Gyarah: Have you noticed something about the climax scene? Watch it again with a timer, and you'll appreciate the brilliance of Pre-Osho Vijay Anand. @Pitu, if you read Marathi books, I highly recommend "Ek Hota Goldie," the official biography of Vijay Anand. Dev Anand: Dev Anand was very much a product of his time. Back then, audiences had different expectations, and every movie aimed to cater to the diverse interests of all family members, hence the tradition of "Formula Movies" that entertained everyone from ages 5 to 95. Among male actors, only Ashok Kumar and Motilal were natural performers. Balraj Sahni and Dilip Kumar were method actors, while others often indulged in theatrics and caricatures. Before Navketan, Dev wasn’t exactly setting the screen on fire with his acting prowess. But when Guru Dutt directed him in "Baazi" for Navketan, Dev was cast in the mold of the noir cinema hero, a role he would revisit many times. He remained acceptable in this role as long as Pre-Osho Vijay Anand was directing him. However, after directing the miraculous hit "Hare Rama Hare Krishna," his career took a sharp decline. Despite his great ideas and impeccable English, the final products of his films were often disappointing. That said, true to the title of his autobiography, he really lived life with zest. His childlike enthusiasm, work ethic, and purity of personality meant that everyone in the industry played along, participating in his films with the same enthusiasm as in his heyday. For his sheer dedication to cinema, Dev Anand will always be, for me, the patron saint of Hindi cinema.

@filmiladies To truly understand Dev Anand, one must read his obituary for Chetan Anand in the Times of India. As I've mentioned elsewhere, he was a thorough gentleman with an excellent command of language, able to articulate his thoughts beautifully. If only he had channeled that talent into other creative avenues and played age-appropriate roles in his later years. But then, he was simply passionate-perhaps even obsessed-with making movies. Despite producing and directing a string of flops in his final three decades, he somehow always found sponsors for his next project. That alone speaks volumes about the kind of man he was. An anecdote about Dev comes to mind: When Norah Jones won a Grammy, he announced plans for a movie about a renowned musician and his estranged, musically gifted daughter. His enthusiasm and ability to articulate his vision made one almost believe in the potential for a great film, even though everyone knew Devsaab would likely ruin it. Yet, we still hoped he would make it. That, in a nutshell, is the magic of his persona.

All of Dev Anand's movies from the black-and-white era are worth watching. However, like many great stars, he struggled to transition successfully from black-and-white to color films. In my opinion, he shines in films like Tere Ghar Ke Saamne and Paying Guest, holding his own even alongside Nutan, who I consider the best actress in Hindi cinema. As you rightly pointed out, he has great on-screen chemistry with his wife Kalpana Kartik, and he genuinely delivers in all those performances. Bombai Ka Babu is another favorite of mine. In the color era, he is impressive in Johnny Mera Naam, Tere Mere Sapne, and of course, Hare Rama Hare Krishna. While I admire Dev Anand as a screen personality, he never truly appealed to me as an actor. He reminds me of Aishwarya Rai in that, under the guidance of a good director, they can deliver strong performances. For Aishwarya, that moment came in Raincoat, where the director effectively used her discomfort in front of the camera. Similarly, Dev Anand was at his best when directed by Gurudutt and Goldie.

There is a peacock who lives outside my house. I can see him from my bedroom window and when it rains, he spreads his feathers and does this little dance. Sometimes I get to see this little performance of his and I feel so happy. This is the same joy I get from watching Aishwarya Rai perform in cinema. You just need to watch her dance in barso re/ nanna re and tell me if that’s not similar to a peacock dancing in the rain because the rain gods were generous. She is a thing of joy before she is a thing of beauty. Aishwarya as Nandini is one of the best performances by an actress in the history of cinema. To me Nandini is like Ahalya or Mandodri or Draupadi. I would say more like Draupadi considering her significance in the legacy of the empire in the novels. She is a tragic queen but she refuses to resign to her tragedy and fights back, hence we perceive her as an antagonist. Honestly her antagonism is so justified. I can’t help but draw parallels between nandini and aishwarya’s real life image. Aishwarya was wronged and yet the whole narrative was spun in such a way that she was perceived as a villain and was at the receiving end of so much vitriol. But she fought back and never gave up! Honestly what a career, what a performance and what a personality. Of course I loved the climax the best. What I love so much about it is that although Nandini is stabbing Aditha and he is dying, she is the one who screams with pain while Aditha is almost pleased that he is meeting his end through her. I love this appreciation and adoration for Aishwarya and PS- II. Happy to see this.

This was back when I had just started watching Hindi films and they helped educate me on the Bollywood landscape! Probably helped cement my Saif fandom, but I also don't think I could revisit it. Definitely will be dated and a bit clunky, but I do remember loving Deepika's clothes, her very cool job, Rishi's character, and the songs...in retrospect the latter border on annoying but I had that soundtrack on repeat...my first Bollywood soundtrack that I purchased on iTunes probably? Funny that I probably didn't really get the cool Neetu Singh cameo at the time. I'm still actually catching up on her films. (I just watched Kaala Patthar for the first time this week. Loved it!) @@filmiladies Not a fan of Imtiaz Ali for the lack of depth in his characters. You mentioned OSO multiple times in this and other episodes. Even though it's an outright formula movie, every character has a personality. Imtiaz Ali's films lack that. Have watched Jab we met in bits and pieces. I think Kareena's personal charisma, screen presence makes her character an outlier from other movies of the same director.

Hi ladies! I'm watching as I write...so probably will have follow up comments! I grew to love Kareena over time. I've mentioned this before, but like Beth Mujhe Dosti Karoge was the third Hindi movie I watched and my first Kareena film and then I saw K3G soon after, so I tended to conflate Poo/Tina with who Kareena was as a person, too, and dismissed her as not a serious person/actress. I agree she has an IRL mean girl vibe and the Anglophile stuff is very obvious, too. (Juhi Chawla is the one I think is a true mean girl IRL...there's something about her KWK appearances that sets off red flags for me and her politics aren't great). Anyway, with Kareena I still have fallen for her more and more over the years to the point that I love some of her major flops or lesser hits more than most like Hulchul, Gori Teri Pyaar Mein, and KI & Ka. And just like Saif, her interviews are some of my favorites...and they are by far my favorite Bollywood couple. They once talked about how they love to watch The Golden Girls together and that sealed the deal...how adorable. I love her truly unique beauty...one of my friends once said that she reminds her of Cher which sometimes I can't unsee, but I too love her minimal makeup looks and how she rocks the Indo-Western looks in many of her films. I can't wait for Buckingham Murders and what she does next. I really want SLB to do a film with her while she can still do the regal glamour he does best. Re: the movies you discuss...Chameli was an interesting one-time watch for me. She's clearly got so much raw talent in that one. Tashan was one of my early watches, too, and I loved how camp it is and still do. Omkara is in my top 5 favorite films of Indian cinema (maybe even of all films ever). Need to watch Khushi still for the first time. What can I say more about Jab We Met - a true classic.

You're right that she's not a great dancer, but she is great at facial expressions during dance sequences...you can't take your eyes of of her. I do love almost all of the films I've seen her in (probably about 75% of her work). Some of my underrated faves are We Are Family and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (the latter in many ways an homage to Geet, but also a really interesting performance). P.S. Buckingham Murders premiered in the UK at a festival or something in 2023 but is still to go to a wide release. She's talked about how it is her "Kate Winslet" kind of role in interviews. RE: Rani vs Kareena...I love them both and used to be more of a Rani girl, but in their choice of recent films, I'm far more interested in Kareena's future career.

Given that she is Karisma's sibling, I didn't pay much attention to her initial movies. But since Chameli had Rahul Bose, I decided to watch it when it was released (one of those Devon Street VCD/DVDs), and Kareena did stand out. Since then, while I haven't seen all of her movies, her roles in Talaash, Jaane Jan, and Crew give me confidence she can act. Regarding Omkara, that movie made me take Saif Ali Khan seriously. Of course, it's an outright Vishal Bhardwaj movie for me. Kareena didn't actually stand out in the ensemble cast; she rarely does in such movies. The only time I found her good in an ensemble was in Luck By Chance. In that small cameo, she conveys the kind of person she might be in real life-someone I wouldn't strike up a conversation with. Another great episode 👏🏼 👏🏼

My dear Ladies!!! I have been listening to all the episodes on Spotify but this time I just had to comment on here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this episode. What a treat! We've not even reached the 1980s in the Superstar Series but of course only Bebo has the sheer power to skip the queue and get priority 😉!!! I truly adore this woman as you both know and have done so since I was a little boy. I remember my older brother and cousin used to tease me for liking Kareena Kapoor in the early 2000s especially circa 2003 because they were both team Preity Zinta and Bebo didn't have the best track record of films at the time. Look at where she is now though (not a dig at Preity as I love her too)!!! Listen, I have sat through Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon and Kyon Ki for her but at the same time we have gems like Chameli, Omkara, Talaash, Jab We Met, Udta Punjab, Jaane Jaan and Crew. This woman is a sheer superstar and we are truly blessed to have her on our screens, whenever she's not vacationing that is. Despite being a fan, I can fully understand and also am not against the criticism of her mean girl antics seeing as I watched the Bebo vs. Priyanka rivalry pan out in real time and I remember that leaving a rather unpleasant taste in my mouth. However, part of me also has to live for the sheer audacity and cattiness of it all. This woman will forever be an icon to me and the journey she's had I truly respect her for persevering and proving herself and earning the status of a superstar and not just resting on the laurels of her family lineage and surname. Side note, Konkona Sen Sharma would have ABSOLUTELY smashed it as Chameli. Another side note, I'd say Bebo is more a lemon and raspberry sorbet. Something sweet but with a slight tanginess.

i've been listening to this podcast from the first episode and there are many favorite episodes that I have and this has also joined that list. Loooooooved every minute of it, not that I am a big bebo fan or anything but its just fun to listen to you ladies discuss some of the actors I enjoy watching on screen. It took me a few years to warm up to her because of her mean girl attitude and some of the comments she makes but I've learned to appreciate her over the years. I pretty much agree with everything that was said and I also think that Bebo in her 40s decade is probably the most interesting Bebo, because now, she has nothing to prove anymore. No one can deny her stardom or her acting talent, so her films in this era pretty much reflect her sensibilities and if she is capable of making smart choices and I think so far she has succeeded. Whereas Karishma, every time she did try to come back it was always with a terrrrrrible film, which is a shame because I do believe that if she had picked some roles like Tabu for example, who did do a lot of "art" films even in the early 2000s, she would still have a career, even if the films had flopped people would respect her choices more. So I just hope for Bebo to be meticolous, because she doesnt have to play the the flower pot, damsel in distress- roles anymore. I do agree that her jodi with saif is quite weak on screen but I also dont like her with SRK, that never worked for me. My favorite Bebo jodi is Hrithik and Shahid but I might enjoy her more when she just leads a film on her own, were it doesnt rely on the jodi or anything. She is truly an Icon (but comparing her to Meena Kumari, Nargis or Madhubala is one hell of a stretch tho, not gon lie😂) I heavily agree on everything Pitu said about Alia, those comparisons Kjo makes are ridiculous and I also have noticed her and all the other new actresses trying to imitate Bebo, which again proves that Kareenas influence is undeniable. However, I also agree with Beth that I do prefer all of Bebos other contemporaries, whether its Aishwarya, Rani, Preity but Bebo still does have something compelling. I especially enjoyed how layered your conversation was about the differences between these actresses and how each of them convey certain things compared to how Bebo does it, or how it comes across because of her innate energy. Anyway, another way too long comment, LOVE this show!!

Hello! I am so happy for this episode as I am the Karisma fan!! Sorry this is late, but I wanted to watch a movie before commenting and work has been crazy. I watched the 1992 movie Jaagruti for this. Another iconic jodi of Karisma-Salman is there. The sugar high twins, I call them. While watching I was trying to find out what makes me a fan and I think it’s the Kapoor vivacious-ness that caries through her. Especially in the songs! She always is an endearing presence on the screen for me. There is something always sprightly about her. I can’t help liking her! I do agree that things that she does in her acting others can do possibly better. I do find something that might be unique about her and it’s the fairy-like quality of her in most of the films I’ve watched. I still haven’t seen Murder Mubaarak, so I am unaware of how she comes off there. But anyway, thank you! I love the podcast! 💜
