    To be clear, there are other fatty acids in oils and when I suggest checking the linoleic/oleic acid ratio I mean in any oil that has those two predominate fatty acids. When oils are combined together many that I would never put straight on my skin can be just fine in a mix with others.
    The comedogenic scale is up for debate. The rankings were determined a very long time ago and were tested on rabbit ears. Rabbit skin is not the same as human skin and a pitfall is that things that rank high on the scale (3,4,5) may NOT be as pore clogging as they appeared to be on a rabbit ear. So let's consider things that are higher on the scale to be POTENTIALLY clogging, rather than DEFINITELY clogging.
    NEXT! Oleic acid....There is evidence that it disrupts the barrier and is not good for the skin (as in straight olive oil). There are so many people who know more than me about facial oils...If you are one of them and you'd like to add to the conversation please do!
    I am going to share some really great blogs that are PACKED with info. Please send them love--really incredible work. Please check the first pinned comment for links to these blogs.

    Thanks Penny great video. I watched a YT by Liah Yoo years ago when my daughter was having acne issues and she did a great job of explaining linoleum and oleic acid and the importance to the skin barrier. As a result I bought pumpkin seed oil and hemp seed oil, natural cold pressed and used those as the last thing at night for her and myself. Really high proportion of linoleic to oleic. Fabulous. Made such a difference. Thanks for reminding me how great they were.

    I’m 52 yrs old with parched, sensitive skin (wrong product will burn my skin or make my face peel like a sunburn, not break me out). I mix 2 drops of squalane oil with my moisturizer in the morning, and then I mix 2 drops of Maracuja oil with moisturizer in the evening. I use the FAB Ultra Repair Cream as my moisturizer both times. I do suffer with psoriasis on my neck and unfortunately neither help with that. But my face is extremely soft and smooth feeling.

    Hi there. I have found that for my mature, yet life long oily skin, which easily breaks out and on top of it all I live in the desert, that 100% pure, cold pressed Argan Oil works best for me. My favorite one as of now, is from Poppy Austin. I have tried almost every oil out there and this one is the winner. Thanks for posting.

      Hi I too have rosacea and my advice would be to use a single oil rather than a blend. The more complex formulas tbh just have more ingredients to react to. Avoid any oils with essential oils (fragranced oils) as that will just flare up your rosacea. Out of the ones shown you can try the marula, rosehip or squalane. I like argan oil and squalane, but haven't tried marula oil. I have used rosehip and it was ok. Hope that helps.

  • @FuriedHearts

    Did you know that it's actually a myth that oils contain vitamin C? This myth is largely associated with rosehip oil since actual rosehip fruits themselves do contain very large amounts of vitamin C (the skins do too). The oil comes from the seeds, however, and since ascorbic acid is a water soluble vitamin it is not found in the oil at all.
    The lightening and scar improving benefits of rosehip oil are most likely attributed to the high linoleic acid content/ratio and trace amounts of retinoic acid. Also antioxidant vitamin E and other polyphenols are present. Absolutely no vitamin C though!

Whatever oil I use...I never let a day pass without putting my oils on after my Essences and before my moisturizer.

    Thank you for this information. How can you apply oil at night when using Retin-A (Tretinoin)? I would love to incorporate the oil but since I apply Tretinoin nightly I’m not sure how to layer those two products so that the Retin-A will keep it’s potency. I’d rather not use during the day since I can get shiny throughout the day already. Thank you in advance 😊

    • @FuriedHearts
      @FuriedHearts 2 года назад +1

      Hey! That's a great question. I think I can help with this. You can actually add 1-2 drops of an oil to your pea-sized amount of Tretinoin. Just put the pea size amount of Tretinoin in your palm, add the oil, and mix together this puddle. Then apply to your face. This will not prevent absorption of the Tret. Oils are very poor occlusives so it won't prevent absorption. Adding the oil will also help the Tret spread across your face (applying a pea size alone is tricky to do).

    Hi Penny, I've got a super important question on hyaluronic acid and the "Dalton thery". Which is: high molecules in hyaluronic acid delivers immediate results to the skin, whereas lower molecules only form a barrier to keep moisture in. I just can't work out which version is in products like The Ordinary or Roche de Posay or Cos de Baha. Any advice or a talk on that would be great . Thankyou

    • @PENNSMITHSKINCARE
      @PENNSMITHSKINCARE  4 года назад

      Hi there: :)
      Ok the high molecular weight HA is the one that is a big molecule that sits on top and hydrates superficially. It’s also the better version for microneedling. Out of the ones you listed the Cos de Baha is high molecular weight, the others are medium and low weights 💜

    Hi Penny! Love your videos.
    My favorite facial oil is Tarte's Maracuja oil (I have oily/combo skin - oily all over my face except my mouth area can get very dry). I've been using it for years now and it does not break me out. It gives me such great moisture, especially during the winter months. I love it just don't like the price point ($48) but I am assuming it's more pricey bc I've read that maracuja is considered more "luxurious".
    1. Do you like/recommend maracuja oil? If so, which brand?
    2. Do you prefer kiwi seed oil over maracuja oil? (haven't tried kiwi oil yet)
    3. Any recs on other brand maracuja oils that are less than $48? (I haven't had success in finding a good alternative)

    • @PENNSMITHSKINCARE
      @PENNSMITHSKINCARE  4 года назад +2

      Ms Nicole here is a first 7 breakdown of the vintner’s daughter:
      1. Grapeseed oil high linoleic acid (good ingredient)
      2. Hazelnut oil high oleic (good ingredient)
      3. Bergamot peel oil photo-toxic (bad ingredient)
      4. Avocado oil high oleic (good ingredient)
      5. Calendula soothing (good ingredient)
      6. Rose absolute fragrance ingredient (not great ingredient)
      7. Carrot seed oil emollient (decently fine ingredient)
      Grape seed oil is a fantastic ingredient and is high in linoleic acid. Then the couple oils (hazelnut and avocado) that are in the first 7 that are high in oleic acid are really good oils and likely are well balanced by the grape seed. The bergamot is not good. It’s one of the worst citrus peel oils and it is the 3rd ingredient 😬
      I suppose though that since you’re using it at night (and sunscreen use is consistent) then you’re ok, but be aware of that sun sensitizer. Rose is another perfume that isn’t great (not as bad as bergamot though).
      I have heard such great things about this one that I am tempted by it myself but I’ve avoided it bc of the bergamot 🤔
      And it’s true-we are all so different! From where we live, our genetics, our personal skin microbiome etc that what works for one may not for another. Yes, go figure! 😊💜

    RMS Beauty has 2 oils, they are combinations. Their beauty oil is very hydrating but soaks in really well. I use it when I feel extra dry or my skin is extra stressed or if my spf is too drying. I feel like it's very nourishing. Otherwise, I usually use Squaline or other oils at night. Living libations makes oil cleansers which sometimes I use that.
    Penny, even though I'm using niacin, vita c, copper peptides and retin a, my skin just seems to keep looking worse. The texture is awful and spots not fading , pores not shrinking and always so dry. Looks like an old rag! I do use sunscreen too! Following your instructions but am aging too fast I guess. Any suggestions??

    In your microneedling video, you recommend kiwi seed oil since it's high in linoleic acid. I'm assuming to lower the chance of breakouts/pimples after microneedling. Do you recommend kiwi seed oil outside of microneedling? I'm 54, have dry/mature skin, but can occasionally have pimples. I'm not sure what ratio of linoleic:oleic acid I should be looking for.
