  • I FINISHED THIS VIDEO! HAHA! I TOLD YOU ALL I CAN KEEP A CONSISTENT SCHEDULE! Now let's just see if that holds up now that university is starting back up for me XD. Wish me luck.
    Anyways, hope you all like the video! Thought this'd be a fun thing to do for 3's one-year-anniversary. I was honestly surprised by how similar the two games' update cycles actually are. So many people online are acting like Splatoon 3's content is super disappointing, but like, it's barely different from 2's post-launch updates lol. It's just a matter of how much content they add how often.

    Splatoon 3 is a 2022 third-person shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the third game in the Splatoon series following Splatoon 2. Like its predecessors in the Splatoon series, the game consists of online multiplayer (player versus player and player versus environment) alongside a single-player campaign, all featuring combat based around ink.
    The game was first revealed in a teaser trailer on 17 February 2021 and was subsequently released on 9 September 2022. The game received generally favorable reviews, with praise for its additional maps, single player campaign, customization options, and gameplay mechanics, but criticism for its matchmaking and disconnection issues and lack of new content. As of 31 March 2023 Splatoon 3 has sold 10.67 million copies worldwide, making it the fastest-selling game in the franchise and one of the best-selling Switch games.
    Like its predecessors in the Splatoon series, Splatoon 3 is a third-person shooter. Players choose to be either an Inkling or Octoling as their player character. Both wield weaponry that uses colored ink as ammunition. Weapons are diverse in ability and imagery, with most resembling household objects. For example, Rollers are large paint rollers that can cover large amounts of area in ink but are generally limited to close-range combat. At the same time, Chargers are weapons which resemble a sniper rifle, and have long range for sniping opponents but are less effective at painting the ground. Splatoon 3 expands upon this by adding new main, sub, and special weapons to the game. Main weapons are able to be chosen by the player, sub weapons are assigned to main weapons and act as secondary weapons that use up more ink, while special weapons are also assigned to specific main weapons and require the player to cover the ground with a varying amount of ink in order to charge it up. Inklings and Octolings have the ability to morph into a squid or octopus form respectively. This form is referred to as the "swim form", and can be used to climb ink-covered walls or swim through ink faster than the humanoid forms can walk. Weapons have a finite amount of ink ammunition, and submerging in ink via the swim form replenishes it quicker than in humanoid form. All basic weapons from the prior Splatoon games return in Splatoon 3.

    For the people who keep commenting I got the music quantity wrong for Splatoon 3, yes, I'm well aware, please read the other comments before you post your own lol
    But anyways, yes I forgot the added lobby music and Daybreaker Anthem, so technically Splatoon 3 does win the music quantity category, and thus wins this whole thing overall.
    Also, just like, be respectful??? I am human, I make errors, I will try not to let this kind of thing happen again because EVERYBODY MAKES MISTAKES!!! Just don't be a jerk about it, thanks.

      You also mentioned that Splatoon 2 had four Splatfest battle songs when it actually had three, and I haven't seen any other comments mention that.
      This other part I wanted to mention doesn't affect the quantity discussion, but Splatoon 3 also started with more multiplayer songs than Splatoon 2 did, having C-Side's 5 songs plus the two from Front Roe and two more from Damp Socks. 3 started with as many songs as Splatoon 1 ended its lifespan with and has already passed the total number that 2 ended with even if you don't count the Splatfest tracks.

      Even if Splat 3 didnt add as many new weps unlike 2, 2s “new weps” were mostly returning ones and lets not count that Splat 3 just base launch whopping 54 as you said to me wins the quantity category with for no contest, but maps are tbh honestly way more important to get right, theyre such an integral part of shooters game-design in general, especially a MOVEMENT shooter, and Splat 3 maps, although more aesthetically pleasing and cool like splat 1 maps are compared to 2, theyve severely missed the mark with for the gameplay aspect of them, whats the point of having Squid Surge if you cant use it anywhere lol, and most walls are paintable, like even Splatoon 1 had a lot of inkable walls even if they werent usable as new routes cuz they were cutoff at the end on top, so id say for visual quality splat 3 wins but for gameplay quality 2 wins.
      Overall great and nice video but splat 3 could really use some improvements especially considering the previous games, like bruh the netcode has only gotten worse in between games and heck 3 even decreased the tickrate from 30Hz to 16. 💀

    Theres a key point missed here though in that people naturally expect 6 years of progress and knowledge gathering to be reflected in improved content quality. And instead quality has backpedalled in some key areas. Splatoon 2s updates set a benchmark to be met or surpassed, so missing the mark becomes more noticable than the successes of 3.

  • @OliyTC

    I will say on the second kit front there are two things worth mentioning:
    - While Splatoon 3 had a higher quantity of kits post-launch, by one year into Splatoon 2 every main weapon had gotten a kit aside from the brand new main weapons and two more (Ballpoint Nautilus Explosher and Bloblobber), while for Splatoon 3 plenty of weapons that have been around since launch didn't get a second kit. The worst outliers for Splatoon 2 became the bottom 25% for Splatoon 3, which is what makes it more frustrating.
    - I'd definitely give the kit quality point to Splatoon 3, almost every weapon feels like it has a specific identity and goal and feels like it's trying to separate itself from its other kit. Splatoon 2 had a lot of kits that felt similar and didn't have a strong identity, and which one got picked usually just boiled down to which sub/special was stronger at the time

    • @aname956
      @aname956 8 месяцев назад +5

      I disagree that S2 had bad kit design. I think it’s more so a victim of its special design and other things such as mpu.
      Let’s use vJet in s2 as an example. A weapon which was notorious for spamming a shit ton of missles. It had a very passive play style, encouraging the least amount of skill expression and ‘interaction’ with other people. It was needed in a lot of comps to counter oppressive mpu mid liners (and sometimes backlines), allowing for shorter range weapons to ‘get in’. If it didn’t have missles enough, the entire team would struggle against longer range weapons, which forced it to never play aggro (or be as safe as possible). I think everyone agrees that this was weapon was awful for the game.
      However let’s imagine it had s3 missles with cooldown. You’ll be punished for playing too passive with the cooldown instead of being rewarded like s2. It would play a lot more similar vBP in s3: a backline with an occasional special to help the team ‘get in’. That would be considerably better for the game and people would probably consider s2 vJet to be well enough designed kit instead of a tragic one.
      I think this reflects on a lot of weapons, particularly splashdown kits, with nearly all of them (except Kloshing Machine???) being outclassed/ or just shit

    • @squiddler7731
      @squiddler7731 7 месяцев назад

      IMO the neo splash-o-matic alone is enough to put splatoon 3 below 2 when it comes to kit variety. I don't think we've ever seen such a redundant kit in any game, not even splatoon 1 where they had like 7 specials to work with. Yeah they have gotten a little better recently, but with 17 specials to go around and years of experience, there's no reason for kits to not be better in this game (dishonorable mention also goes to dapples nouveau, which just copy-pasted a bad kit from 2)

    My huge major issue with Splatoon 3 that wasn't really touched upon is how worrysome the state of the stringer and splatana classes are. We are basically halfway through the games "lifespan" and we only have 3 kits for each class and 2 of them are identical mechanic wise. These classes SORELY need need kits or better yet new variations and unique takes on each of their respective attributes. Stringers were a major marketing point of the game and Nintendo just being like "heres a new kit or smth lol" a year later is kinda frusterating

    • @kitthegoddess4157
      @kitthegoddess4157  8 месяцев назад +14

      Yeah, I agree with this. Splatoon 2 overcommitted by adding so many new Dualies and Brellas immediately after launch, but Splatoon 3 undercomitted with the Stringers and Splatanas. New main weapons of those should have been in the first or second update.

    Some points I think are worth noting:
    - Splatoon 3 actually did get more music post-launch due to additions you didn't mention like Bait & Click and the three lobby songs added in 4.0.0. There's also Daybreaker Anthem, but I guess that was technically only available to listen to one day after the anniversary, but even then Splatoon 3 would win in terms of quantity.
    - One more measurable quality difference in terms of kits is how visually distinct they are from their vanilla counterparts. In Splatoon 2. With a few exceptions like the Dynamo Roller, most kits looked identical to their vanilla counterparts, but with a sticker or decal. Compare that to Splatoon 3 where nearly every weapon looks visually distinct, usually in terms of color. Compare Tentatek Splattershot, Clash Blaster Neo, or Bloblobber Deco between the two games and you can see what I mean.

    Everyone says that Sploon 2 was better. Well, I never got into FPS or competitive shooters, and even though I was intrigued enough by Sploon 2 to buy it, Ladder Axiety (it's a thing! and I didn't know there was a single player campaign!) kept me from playing it. I joined in the Sploon 3 testfire because someone in my XIV guild played 2 and encouraged me to try it, and I was hooked. I played a bunch that weekend and preordered the game. I also went back and played some Sploon 2 while I was waiting.
    Personally, I like Sploon 3 more than 2. I can see how someone might look upon it more fondly with rose tinted glasses, but Sploon 3 really feels like a maturation of the concepts. As for the catalog, I log in and play a couple games each day - with the first win bonus (which counts for salmon run too!) it's been pretty easy to fill them all out. AND I play FFXIV multiple days a week plus took time off for ToTK.

    13:36. "The only real difference..."
    Imho the greatest (and worst) difference is that any S+ player can participate in X battles, whereas in S2 you had to reach S+10 in order to be able to join X. This considerably lowers the skill floor of the mode. Also, since people don't organically rank down, any S player that does well in S will inevitably rank up to S+ with no way of going back (other than a manual rank down and a reset every 3 months), which means that players that belong to S can also participate in X battles

At the same time though s3 did fix some issues with ranked modes. Specifically, the hud showing you a timer in SZ for overtime to let you know exactly how long you have to regain control of the contested zone before you lose. In CB the drop down to 8 clams for a power clam feels good also the addition of the overtime hud here as well. i feel like there’s a lot of hate on splat 3s updates and features (outside of the stage design) i don’t feel too strongly about the kits and stages that have yet to return because i hope the game focuses on new stages and content like the new update and not trying to make each game have the same content. i almost like the sense of exclusivity with splat 1 and 2 stages and i hope things like the reef and urchin underpass don’t return

    I don't think Splatoon 3 will have a 3rd alternate kit for all of their weapons, and the reason for this is most likely because of Tableturf Battle.
    Almost all of the cards and its patterns are based on weapons from all classes, and the 2nd alternate kit for these weapons have its patterns mirrored. So if some weapons receive 3rd alt kits, I have no idea how they're going to add that in into Tableturf.

    I was high-key obsessed with splatoon 2. Played over 3k hours, it was my main way of interacting with my friends who were all in different states. The weekly/monthly updates really had me in a chokehold where i just couldnt stop playing. After a couple years i was playing 75% salmon run, which also managed to stay fresh for me.
    Splatoon 3 was one of my most anticipated games of all time and at this point ive played maybe 500 hours. The magic vibes of splatoon are there for me when the music hits just right. I by no means consider myself a hater of splatoon 3. But personally, the monthly updates from splat2 kept the game so fresh, there was always a reason to keep playing. An update that i have to assume won't be added, but I REALLY want, is Splatoon 2's hub.
    I never had the chance to play 2. I didn't get a switch until years later., But despite that, everything I've seen about 2 so far in terms of its aesthetic choices like the hub, and its characters. both the idols and the shopkeepers... I kinda like ALL of it more than 3. So I'd love a chance to go to the area I've never been.
    I guess I'd like an update that made Challenges just last the whole day. Since I've never played them due to the time slots. Buuut that aint happenin' either.

    6:30 No... that was an example of a GOOD change. It wasn't executed as well as it could've been, but any ANY obstacles to avoid snipers is better than having none, especially with this current linear map design. Chargers are way to oppressive. Top range, one shot, perfect accuracy and the projectile lands instantly rather than having a slower velocity like shooters... if you have perfect aim and never miss the shots you take you are basically an untouchable god, because there are few methods of closing the distance. Obstacles or a bunch of extra routes are what's needed, because otherwise it doesn't feel fair. Especially with the Elitre, which enables people to just sit at spawn and kill you while on your side of the map on certain stages.

    • @kitthegoddess4157
      @kitthegoddess4157  7 месяцев назад

      I’m not saying chargers and other anchor weapons shouldn’t have been nerfed, I’m saying the way they did it was very bad at first. They went from being super oppressive to barely viable, at least until more patches were rolled out to adjust things. The problem is like you said, more obstacles and alternate routes are what we need, not giant signposts and pointless polls designed specifically to hinder anchors. Splatoon is a movement-based shooter, first and foremost, so non-anchor players need more cover and routes to move around rather than just making more spots impossible to play anchor from.

    Personally speaking, I really prefer Splatoon 3's updates a lot more. I'm not just speaking because I actually liked the game enough to not drop off immediately after launch like S2 (I never reached level 30 in 2 before 2.0 came out, despite my MASSIVE hype for the game), but I genuinely feel like every update to 3 has been positive, even with issues or even if not having as much content as maybe we'd hope for. Plus, I HATED S2's update structure tbh. It was padded to hell with the 8 weapons missing for no reason (why the hell was the inkbrush saved for TWO DAYS AFTER LAUNCH?), and the base brella was literally playable in story mode day 1, there was NO excuse for it to not be in the game at launch.
    AND something I never see talked about is that the big update trailers were super misleading. Like 2.0? Clam Blitz wasn’t there until 2.1 lol, also those weapons we showed are still weeks and weeks away. 4.0? The cool new subs and specials weren’t on the 4 weapons they showed in the trailer LMAO, GET BAITED. At least with S3 I KNOW what I'm getting excited for and what's going to drop the day the season releases.

    • @techmuse8
      @techmuse8 8 месяцев назад +2

      Will also add on to the point about S3 updates generally being positive for the game. Compared to S2 which had things like MPU and some of the Stingray buffs that REALLY hurt the game. There’s more but I couldn’t be bothered to mention the rest.

    I know this videos kinda old at this point but I came back to it and rewatching it is making me realize that in a lot of ways splatoon 3 has more content than splatoon 2 and in my opinion it comes down to how the contents added, having one new weapon, kit, or stage every week feels a lot more satisfying compared to a batch of content every three months. I personally really prefer having 3 month seasons since it gives each era of the game a distinct feel with what's added, but dropping batches of content at the start of the season and barely anything throughout definitely makes each season feel lackluster in my eyes. I'm not a game developer and while I listen to, read, and learn a lot about the development process, each studio does it differently and so I'm not sure how big of a change it'd be for the development team behind splatoon 3 in terms of workload or deadlines, but I have thought of a compromise that could possibly work. My idea was a blend of the two update models, the 3 month seasons are still in place with a batch of content coming at the seasons launch, though not as large as splatoon 3's batches, then every week (or every other week, or maybe even month) they have even smaller batches of content. There'd still be a large addition to the game each season but it could help make the rest of the content more digestible and give a similar feeling to splatoon 2's updates where there was always something being added right around the corner. Again I'm not sure how well it'd work, I don't know if it would be possible for the dev team, but it was something I found interesting because in many ways splatoon 3 has much more content than its predecessor but that's rarely acknowledged.

    • @poke5887
      @poke5887 3 месяца назад

      I do want to add that its not all about perception, the fact many main weapons in splatoon 3 dont have second kits almost a year and a half into the games lifespan is embarrassing and couldve been handled better. But maybe a different approach to the season model could fix that problem.

    The frequency of updates is definitely a negative for 3. It's only been half a month but we've already gotten all the major events out of the way, as well as the new additions. The arguably biggest Splatfest (for now maybe) is done and gone, the Big Run we get every 3 months is done and gone as well. The new maps, while great, are not enough to carry the next 2 and a half months. Challenges are a thing I guess, but the limited time frames has made me disregard them completely. It honestly annoys me when I play the game during a Challenge time frame just because the intro is unskippable until you move past the "Hey, there is a challenge going on right now" screen.
    I feel like we need a happy medium between frontloading a season and weekly updates. I think we can still have the beginning of the season be what it is, but we need monthly updates or something. Add a few more kits (not as many as the beginning of the season but still) and a map or two, new or returning. Just to keep things fresh so we aren't done with everything the season has to offer within the first 2 weeks.

    1the plot its very cool. About octopus evolution . And how they turns kids fighting like the movie mad max.
    But they just do a little bit of history.
    2 the battle about silly things like mustard vs mayonese or pineapple pizza vs peperoni pizza it was very clever. Everything with 2 teams it was really cool.
    But they do it only online.
    3 stadiums weapons. Characters are very aswome.
    But only multiplayer.
    If this game just make a real heavy history mode with character conflict with silly things like a hot team vs cold team just as an expample. With mini game bosses better costumization. An a complete gallery mode . Challenge mode. Vs mode. Etc will be a blast .
    Very sad.
