I have been HCing shiver as nonbinary for a while now. Ive never been able to say whether they were transfemme or transmasc because while they seem to enjoy dressing femme the tape that probably has a name reminds me of a binder. I mean what is the point of being nonbinary if not to confuse people like they confused me lol. Shivers my favorite splatoon character i love that silly dumbass so much and i could probably go on but wont for the sake of not writing an entire essay

People tend to get really angry with pronouns so when ever I need to write these two I use she/they for them both. Acht might even make sense in lore I mean Tartar does not seem like the most gender affirming guy so she/her under tartar and they/them once freed?

I have always been under the impression that both Acht and Shiver were female characters. I never really picked up on any non-binary hints between them and just though they were females like all the rest. I also never picked up on the hint that Pearl and Marina were secretly pining for one another. I just thought they were really close friends with Marina possibly being a little too clingy because of how her life has been before and with Pearl making her feel like she has a place in Inkling society. I guess that just goes to show how much I know I guess

Say what you will about the translations of TTYD or Fates, but while it does suck that Marina's positive relationship with Pearl doesn't come off as strongly in base game Splat2, I do think that giving this shy-looking character a bit of sass and a tendency to "bite back" against Pearl's narcissism makes their dynamic more fun. Same-sex couples in media are too often made to be bland and perfect, and I'd like to think there's more going on with the Pearl-Marina dynamic than just "reserved doormat girl and tiny yapping forehead goblin." I think it'd be great if Marina's personality going forward incorporated both sides of the coin so she felt like a more interesting character. She felt kinda bland in Side Order.

I understand why some would want to label Shiver as non-binary and I support those sorts of headcanons, but putting her into the non-bonary category simply because she has less defining feminine features is kind of weird. A woman is still a woman even if she goes slightly outside the typical appearance of one and just because she avoided using any labels when she was introduced doesn't mean anything. It's much harder to recognise in the localised versions of Splatoon 3 but she is greatly inspired by a Japanese culture, hence why she introduced herself like that, wears the garments she does and sings in the way she sings. Clothes and appearances don't inherently have a gender and just because she is less feminine in that standard doesn't mean she is any less of a woman. I can see Acht being non-binary though, with how they are addressed with neutral pronouns. But again, some people may have different interpretations as in the Japanese version in the game, they address themselves as "boku", which is used by both men and tomboys. Again, I think all headcanons regarding this are fine, but respectfully I do think it's a little odd when people were heavily fixating on Shiver's identity back then due to all these factors.

Adding onto your point about the 3 most queer characters being in an elevator in side order this can also extend to Agent 8 depending on whatever fan interpretation 8 is in your brain. Agent 8 and Agent 3 are quite literally the perfect Tumblr ship characters because they can be a lesbian gay or just a wholesome cis relationship and I eat up the fanart for it ravenously.

It's interesting to me that this debate only exists mostly in the western (or eng speaking) community while the rest of the world pretty much sees both of them as female almost instantly. I'm quite surprised people even see Shiver as nb in the first place, the sarashi around her chest, her demeanor and her using 'uchi' is a dead give away she's 99% female, especially given her Japanese coded context. Maybe cause I'm used to seeing JP and CN community too, but Acht is pretty much female to non-western fans. They commonly referred to Acht as 'bokukko' aka a girl that uses boku (a more masculine pronoun in JP) but doesn't mean she's trans or nb, in fact boku is getting more common among Japanese girls in modern times. Remember Acht was referred to as 'kanojyo' in Splat 2, the way Acht spoke is just hard to translate since there's no 'boku' equivalent in other languages hence this is what we got. That said, if Nintendo JP truly wanna confirm she's nb in the future, I'm cool with it. I'm just saying this is only a debate among western fans. Non-western fans pretty much treat them both as females from the get-go given the cultural context.

I think acht is meant to be enby or gnc at the very least I don't think shiver was meant to be anything other than a cis octo with a sarashi but I don't think that should deter anyone from having their own headcanons, I think too many people are way too fixated on what is and isn't canon instead of having fun with it Personally I hc every single idol to be transfemme just because, and it's a lot of fun to disregard "Canon" or whatever

shiver may not be non binary but she can certainly be considered androgynous or feminist. Her design has elements of Japanese culture that goes against gender norms, like her being a sukeban. Shiver’s frostyfest outfit was inspired by flappers, which have the same concept that pushed against norms for women. She is a delinquent to gender!!

I don’t think they ever intended to make Shiver nonbinary, since from what I’ve seen it was mostly a cultural difference with expressing gender while Acht is gender nonconforming (and probably nonbinary) even in Japan. Idk how to explain it well, but basically Shiver uses theatrical and ancient versions of pronouns, which don’t always have a specific gender to them, to refer to herself but as a way of being dramatic. Most of the time she’s referred to as a girl, and the binding of her chest is something commonly done in festivals in Japan (which is deep cut’s idol theme). Meanwhile, Acht is much more blatantly gender non-conforming. Their way of dressing is feminine, but they use more explicitly masculine pronouns when speaking. Considering the English translation also translates it as “they”, it’s pretty likely Acht is meant to be nonbinary. Translation is also hard, so it probably wasn’t censorship but rather a genuine correction. Especially with Acht, since I don’t think they’d go through the trouble of having Shiver be censored and not Acht.

!! This!! I do wonder, however, if Acht being NB was a retcon BECAUSE of the response to Shiver NOT being nb, as the backstory we had of them till Splatoon 3 always used She/Her to refer to Acht. (although, i may note that there really wasn't ANY canonical translated dedf1sh lore before Side Order) I know Ahato is technically just the Japanese pronunciation of "Acht", but i choose to interpret it as their dead name for this same reason. As for Shiver, I've just kinda come to accept the fact that she's probably Canonically a Cis Woman, but i still like to refer to them with any pronouns :) also, unrelated OTHER translation thing I still find kinda funny: in the English localization of Octo Expansion, they made Captain Cuttlefish MORE racist. In the original Japanese, he never says anything about "not seeing species", and simply says "no fan of the Inkantation is a foe of mine", along with calling Marina articulate (seemingly a racial stereotype among Octarians and Octolings). so, this is something that gets kind of lost in translation because it's very cultural-specific, but in the japanese version of splatoon 3's story mode, when Deep Cut appears as antagonists under their wasteland bandit persona, Shiver uses archaic masculine dialects, the kind a samurai or midevil bandit would use, but on the news cast and during performances Shivers uses more neutral/feminine leaning language
