Not every change is a good one, sometimes things can be made a whole lot worse. While many of these got removed its good to back and see just how bad some things were. Let's take a trip down memory lane.
Note for this video: This was originally going to be decisions in general but was changed to changes to narrow down the list/make the vid have a similar theme. Because of this #9 old ink armor would prolly not count but was caught too late. It's still really interesting though so at least its documented. #4 Clam Blitz cheese however does count because its about the evolution of that strat getting easier/less punishing over time as the change.

Honestly, League Battle being removed and replaced with challenges despite being promised at the beginning of Splatoon 3 is up there for me. Challenges aren’t bad but as someone who tends to play open, it would probably be better for teams of players to be able to compete against each other in League rather than fighting against many people who could be playing ranked open solo

The worst change has to be the map design philosophy. It seems like splatoon 3 wants to force a lot of fights but they do this in the least fun ways possible. They limit routes, remove inkable walls, redesign classic maps like mahi and hammerhead to be unrecognizable and terrible, and just keep making changes that don't fix the issues their new design philosophy creates. It's really a surprise how good bluefin and robo-ramen turned out, like the designers were actually permitted to create a real map instead of the hot garbage they usually do. Fortunately the ranked modes have a bit more movement usually, but the issue is really really bad in turf war which is already not a fun mode.

    • @jsCP94
      @jsCP94 4 месяца назад +22

Chara did put something about the maps on the list, it just would've taken too long and he just put the most egregious example. Also the two maps you mentioned just means that they heard the community and are designing the maps to be more enjoyable. They weren't going to commit to the design philosophy forever if people expressed that they hate it.

There are a handful of things that get under my skin with Splatoon 3's design, but my ABSOLUTE least favorite change has to be the bizarre shift in Map Design Philosophy in Splatoon 3. So many maps in 3 feature things that are not only not fun to play on, but ignore core mechanics of the game. Why are there so many un-inkable srufaces? Why are there so many one-way drops? Why is there so little vertical height utilized in a game that introduces two new mechanics that would be great for it? Why bring back old maps if you're just going to horribly neuter them? Why are so many of the new maps designed like hallways that are practically made for steamroll matches? It honest to god feels the people designing this game don't even play it.

Surprised mpu damage didn’t make the list, drastically reduced the amount of weapons ran, removed almost all gear expression in 99.X weapons, made even the most minor slip-up a massive risk, removed an entire class from play except for one, and overall made the game a much less enjoyable experience, especially considering the already chip-heavy meta

I think having a finite update schedule is terrible for the game. We’ve seen how it can make later updates feel very lackluster in splat 3 with only 8 kits in the most recent update making third kits feel like it’s never gonna happen even though some weapons really really want it (Dapples and Tetra are the two that need it most imo). Salmon run is your main option if you want chunks. You can get the same gear but it can have different main and sub slots. When you get it, you can swap for chunks instead of replacing the current piece of gear in your inventory. Still time consuming, but it requires no money or super sea snails. Buying star power so the gear needs less exp to unlock abilities on the sub slots sooner gets way too expensive. It'd be nice if splatfest made most things less expensive, including the shellout machine. Just make it 15,000 over the weekend or something.

If rank resets were the reason they could've just made it like 2 where if you don't have the current required rank in anarchy but you had 2000+ power in a mode last season you keep X for that mode and will need to hit S+ 10 again for any modes you didn't.

Splatoon 3's three-way Splatfest has been one of the worst changes in the franchise. As a concept it's a fun idea, but in practice it's frustrating. Mirror battles are rampant which skew results, the question to the theme is either vague or not opinionated, multiple repeat fests from previous games but with a pointless third option, lack of original Splatfests maps (and if it is original it's REALLY bad), unbalanced point system for every category, most fests aren't region blocked (also skewing results and causes more lag), and so much other problems. I really hope they go back to the 1v1 Splatfests in the next game with something like Shifty Stations back because that was when Splatfests were actually fun :(

Because Splatoon 4 will probably have 4 hosts due to the fact that Splatoon 3 has three of them, they need to go back to two way Splatfests.
Split the two teams between the four of them. For example Diva 1 and Diva 3 form team Dog and Diva 2 and Diva 4 form Team Cat.
Just go back to two teams per Splatfests, we're seeing what it causes with Shiver almost winning every Splatfests and teams coming dead last because of poor popularity vote numbers and having no chance to fight for points.

and also the bazzar color choices for the splatfest the odd color choices, still using white ink, the Red, yellow Blue one being used a few times

-Jr's extra big tank in S2's 3.2.0 update was an entirely pointless addition considering Jr already was the most ink efficient main in the entire game, and it got more efficiency buffs later in the game's life

  • @loresoong8207
    @loresoong8207 4 месяца назад +6

An underdiscussed aspect of adding Kraken to S3, was that before Kraken was added, not only were there no invincible specials in the game, but every special that gave you more HP limited your movement, like crab. I think it's what made S3 feel so much more balanced during the testfire; after being stuck in ink armor meta for the entirety of S2, it was really refreshing feeling like you could actually pick and hold fights with your main weapon. It felt like an actual cohesive design philosophy and at launch, it kind of made up for the bad maps for me. The map design was worse, but the weapon/special balance was enough of an improvement that the game still felt a lot better (even if crab meta was annoying while it lasted.)
Kraken didn't end up being nearly as bad as something like Bubbler or Ink Armor but it kind of felt like a philosophy shift for me. IMO there weren't really like, dedicated cheesy panic special weapons in the game before it. There were strong specials but like, crab isn't really a panic button? And this was before the paint buffs to vacuum and reefslider, so that wasn't a huge problem either. Even Baller at least had breakable HP, it did what Kraken did while being a little more fair to people who didn't have a special ready.
I don't wanna sound like I'm blaming Kraken specifically for all the issues I have with S3, because it isn't really up there. But it was kind of a wake up call for me that the decent balance & cohesive design they had early in the game was kind of a happy accident, or at least that it wouldn't last for long in a game whose identity relies on having upwards of 100 kits.

This is a super niche change that I feel as though I’m the only one that dislikes, but I REALLY miss when you could see what special weapon your teammate is using when they use it.
For those who don’t know, in Splatoon 1 and 2 the name of your teammate’s special weapon along with their avatar would appear on the right of the screen just under your special weapon gauge whenever they use their special weapon. It was super helpful for me to know that a special weapon I hear during a match was used by my teammate and not my enemy.
Now in Splatoon 3, only some special weapons appear on the screen but as small dots in the direction of where the special weapon was used. In a game as vibrant, intense, and quick-paced as Splatoon, I have no time or ability to squint at what special my teammate just used and instead have to rely only on sound cues, hoping that it is my teammate’s special weapon and not my enemy’s.

Most terrible change to me is probably the rank decay and overall system in splatoon 3. I don't know why they insist on having rank decay active at all. I can kind of understand that it forces players to keep playing the game. But this is more of a downgrade than an actual fix in my eyes. It forced X rank players down to S, two entire ranks underneath X rank. You might say that they could play until they reach S+10 but that is WAY more effort than just taking the Rank decay every 3 months and then going from S to S+ which is just one rank you have to climb instead of 10. This creates the massive problem of me seeing people with a silver and sometimes even golden X rank stamp in S rank. Both S and S+ rank is infiltrated by players that are so high above that skill level it is genuinly not fun to play. The entire decission to have S+ and X be kind of the same rank is also terrible. They should've kept the X rank seperate with an open and a series because now we have S and S+ ranks that are just X ranks in disguise. I don't have the drive to "aim higher" each season when I find myself get beat up by someone with an golden X rank stamp. I already know what games I will lose right at the start by just spotting those stamps. And they are pretty common to see in S and S+. I don't even blame the competitive players for this either they just work with what everyone else also has to work with.

@@unl3ash3d95 Of course I agree that the mindset when playing is also a factor into winning or losing. But the fact remains that placing top 10 and top 500 X rank players into S and S+ ranks is an unfair match up for those lower ranks. I hear this type of answer from a lot of higher X rank players and I think it's disingenuous at best and tone deaf at worst. And I mean no offense with this btw. I have massive respect for those higher ranked players, but they simply should not be in S+ and sometimes even S rank lobbies. The fact that I can sometimes win against them ( which is very rare btw ) does not make it a suddenly fair match up. That's like running against a Olympic type sprinter and hoping he'll trip so I can bag the win after all. The truth is that this kind of system as it is benefits players like you more than it does me. Of course you have an easier time there you are also an competitive X rank player. I still simply think that X should've been a different rank all together with it's own series and open. Cause I don't think top500 or Top10 in the world should be in S or S+ ranks. That's just plain unfair.

I really hate how the salmon run reward capsule system was changed in Splatoon 3 compared to how it was in 2. The reward capsules and superbonus reward capsules you can get are completely random now instead of a guaranteed type of superbonus capsule with that guaranteed type never showing up as a normal capsule. Salmon run gear also can't be exchanged for money anymore because of the changes to how those drops work. Salmon run gear now comes with random amounts of secondary slots with those slots always having a random ability on them instead of always having 3 slots with 0 to 3 random abilities in them. You can't exchange gear with no secondary abilities for money anymore because all gear is guaranteed to have a minimum of 1 secondary ability on it.

I've played since Splatoon 1 and the worst one to me was when they removed deranking from ranked battle. It puts everyone so near each other by being able to advance to S+ by attrition alone to the point where it feels pretty easy to get paired against a team that is clearly far outside your skill level and then you end up in rank debt after losing so many times to the point of not being able to recover ever. And somehow sinking so far in negative hell is somehow more demoralizing than just straight up losing your rank and having to climb back up. And only one reset per season? So what if you got into the negative -2000s the first time around, reset only to end back there again? At that point it makes you feel liek why bother when you'll only stay in debt and not feel rewarded in the same way being able to regain your rank feels.

In Splat 1 it felt like the gear you wore really affected your playstyle, now it doesn't matter so much, and it's more about how skilled you are at using a given weapon or playing a certain map or game type. As someone who is more interested in casual gameplay, rather than competitive play, this made PVP not very fun anymore. The terrible map design in S3 solidified this shift.

Not going to lie? Even if we have a massive amount of specials, and even if it's a horrid special in its base game, I hope Sting Ray returns, but NOT how it was. I like the idea of a long-range piercing weapon made to pressure people off of specific points , but the way it was designed before made it oppressive and horrible to fight against.
In my opinion, the range should be reduced significantly. Not infinite, but not close range either. Around E-Liter or Splat Charger range would make it good, especially for weapons which can't attack easily from that range. The shock waves should stay, but take longer to activate, are smaller, and deal half as much damage. To compensate, I think the beam should move quicker.
This means it takes more skill and situational awareness to use it. If you pop it without the support of your team, then you're leaving yourself completely vulnerable to an ambush and can be picked off quickly, and you can't fire it from spawn, so if you want to have value, you have to put yourself somewhere risky. At the same time, it's a great displacement tool, especially for long-range weapons like chargers and splatlings which can often create stalemates, especially if your team doesn't have a long range weapon (which usually happens in casual and not competitive, but oftentimes Nintendo focuses on casual more than competitive).
I can definitely agree that in Splatoon 2 it was garbage that ruined the game, but when I played Dynamo during that time, I really appreciated having that extra range to deal with chargers which could pick me off while I played support for my team (which is a way better way to play it than aggressive Dynamo). I think tapping into the displacement more rather than the area of effect is better, and having it be more reliant on skill would make it a more balanced special.

It is my opinion that they buffed the wrong hitbox for Ultra Stamp. They should have buffed the protection hitbox so you can't get shot through the hammer PERIOD, instead of overtuning the splash damage hitbox to the degree that the duration got nerfed shortly afterward.
This buff took away the healthiest of the back and forth that came with using and fighting Ultra Stamp. Now it's impossible to squeeze past a rushing stamp in most places, meaning stamp users don't need the skill of reacting to those kind of plays anymore. I loved catching people out who tried doing this with a well placed jump swing or the like, but now it's just done automatically, and that gets boring after a while. Yeah, the Splash damage shockwave was pretty small before, but it's far too big now, almost impossible to escape most of the time. It makes Stamp less fun to go up against.
It also didn't solve the core issue Ultra Stamp has always had: the vulnerability from the front, which is advertised as being protected. The at times nonexistant protection hitbox Stamp STILL suffers from makes closing even a splattershot ranged gap to engage someone feel like a coin flip, and the higher up you go skill wise, the more likely it is that the Stamp will die first. If anything, that Splash damage hitbox buff reinforced this vulnerability, because it's harder to get around the hammer to the side that is meant to be vulnerable, and it's also harder to escape from, so people have to gun it down from the front instead. I never tried to gun someone down through their hammer in S2, but it's all I find myself doing now in S3, because if a Stamp is targeting me, I feel like I don't have any other choice.
Being able to skirt around a rushing Ultra Stamp is part of what made fights with it more interesting and fun, and required more skill on the part of the Stamp User to either prevent that from happening or work around it when it did. I feel the handling buff helps that skill, but the shockwave buff ruined that dynamic completely. It made the special stronger, sure, but also less fun to use and to fight.

i got an in my opinion cool video idea: giving one change to every weapon to make them either broken or garbage (for example giving Squiffer Jump RNG or giving Range Blaster Clash blaster‘s fire rate)

I guess these changes are the reason why I didn’t play Splatoon for a long time.

I hate the new painting logic in Splatoon 3, as show at the end of the video. I find as charger player every game a spot that got not painted, even with full charge. It could even happen with other weapons. In Salmon Run on Shipwrack, I found a ledge that I could not paint even I shot it directly, I think it was a blaster.

On top of my favorite map Mahi Mahi, being butchered, my SECOND favorite map, Flounder Heights, HAD THE HEIGHTS TAKEN AWAY! Now it just flounders in mediocrity...

The complete removal of dual squelcher from the second and third games was my least favorite change

Honestly, I hate the new emotes. Only because they remived the ability to see your team lose, and instead watch the other team gloat. I would way rather see my character feel as crushed as me, while now it feels... Unsportsmanlike almost? Just feels like the teams rubbing it in, especially if you just suffered a really bad loss.

As someone who pretty much cheesed tower control in splatoon 2, I can heavily agree that stingray is the worse special. Being completely far away and when your about to aim you get thermal ink, while I do think it's a good strategy to have some members of the opposite team go for you, but not everytime.
