After the end of Splatoon 2 and into early Splatoon 3 there was a LOT of community panic about shooters. Now just about a year later its time to take a final look at the topic from an outside perspective to see what happened since.

shooters are always gonna be around but theres thankfully alot of different flavors to go for and they arent required to survive nowadays. which is refreshing to see

I think the one thing I'm still kinda annoyed with in terms of shooters is that already relevant shooters get buffed kinda frequently, while stuff like L-3D is stuck at 200p with a special that functions only sometimes and against less than half the weapons in the game to boot.
L3D will forever be shafted from getting kraken burst bomb again…..
I’m an H-3D and L-3D player and man, this game really proved to me how crippled those 2 weapons are (especially H-3) without near-perfect kits or damage increasing abilities

To be honest, on day 1 I thought it had a lot of potential, but then after a while, I realized it's impossible to be consistent with, and overall it's pretty weak. I like what they did with the buff, but that's not enough to make it good. I wish it would get a charge time buff and probably run speed

the editing in this video is so good and fun to watch, along with being a great discussion
Personally I think they should stop giving buffs to shooters and focus on other weapon classes like brellas, and brushes this would be much healthier for the game and their would be alot more diversity.
they need to start giving buffs period lmaoo
I think they should give buffs to rollers and brushes more, because i feel like there pretty outclassed by trislosher.
Shooter buffs in splatoon 3 have only ever been a rich get richer, poor get poorer (or at least the same amount of poor) affair; shooters that were already fine off become even better, and the shooters that have historically struggled still stay in the exact same place they've always been. It's simple, they keep the 'newbie' weapons, the ones that don't require much time investment or practice to be decent with, strong to keep the casual audience playing, and the rest of the weapon classes can take turns getting buffs each patch cycle and hoping it's actually going to make a difference this time.
The two exceptions to this in my eyes are the dash-3's and the Nova, the prior needing some more small buffs on both L and H-3 and the Nova needing a rework/major buff (My favorite idea being making it have perfect accuracy mid-air, making it basically the most mobile and evasive mid-long range shooter in the game, at the cost of damage)
@danielvelazquez6936 As a Tri Nouveau main... Yeeaahhh. I've tried Painbrush and Inkbrush and a bit of both Dynamo and regular Roller, but I've always switched back to Tri because I find I can just do more with it.
Chara finally bought his first apartment. Loved that intro. Thank you lol
Shooters are not only line-of-sight weapons (so they kill faster in proportion to their max range to compansate), but their extremely high firerates give immense freedom of movement: you can alternate between attacking and fast swimming in the blink on an eye, at whatever rate or frequency you need. Though some people think traditional short-range ones are really basic and thus are always strong, I would argue that Shooters (and the Dualies by extension) are not mere balanced noob-type snoozefests; they're a _very unique_ class of main weapon.
i think some shooters in splatoon 3 are just as strong as some of the splatoon 2 counter parts but the specials dont make other weapon unusable like it did it s2 which is way we see more weapon classes being played
Chara: stringers...will be relevant one

I think another thing that helps shooters is how similar the main weapons are like squeezer and pro, zap and shot and splash. aero and jr, jet and nova
do we really need zap and shot? what would change in the meta if we took away zap and gave the grey zap kit to nsplash?
Is there a single thing a Pro does better than a Squeezer? Besides preserving your hands.
that's my point these weapons are so similar they either outclass one another or you need the special@@flight5091
Generally speaking Shot usually has more aggressive sets whereas Zap has more supportive ones. This is likely because Zap is better with spreading paint but has lower damage
@@flight5091 I mean, it’s better at Turfing thean squeezers long range mode. And it’s time to splat is slightly quicker than squeezers long range mode if all the shots land?
Definitely at lower levels of play, shooters are seen as really good because of how good generalists they are
A lot of shooter hate could be countered with "get good" (but in a more philosophical way than that)
Shooters are notably quite strong for how easy they are to play, compared to other options like brellas and dualies
Not the ProChara jumpscare 💀
Let’s just hope that other classes get a chance to shine
I think shooters are at the right strength. The issue is the lack of buffs to everything else. The only reasons other weapon see as much use as they do is because they are on par or stronger than shooters. Shooters should be the "Jack of all trades, Master of none" Class, yet they end up feeling like the class that can do it all. The benifits of the other classes should be that they are really good at certian things, but struggle at others. Rollers provide some of the best sharking weapons in the game but catch it unaware and it's a pretty free kill. Chargers have great Long range pressure but get close up to them and it shouldn't be to hard to shut them down. Sloshers can provide the ability to hit foes at a unique angle but once it is inbetween sloshes you can rush it down. Blasters have the ability to use insane aoe at a range but have a lot of downtime and can't really paint. Brushes posses some insane mobility but if you just stay out of their range you'll find they can't do much. Dualies have dodge rolls and decent paint but most of their weapons have lackluster DPS against objects and without being in "roll mode" are somewhat inaccurate. Brellas have a shield that can be used to defend yourself, objectives, or teamates but if it breaks it's easy to take a fight against it and win. Stringers have the ability to hit opponents over walls and objects from a distance but struggle with hitting one-shots. Splatanas have amazing mobility and paint but the weapons can be very combo depenedent. All the other classes have their own ups and downs, as well as each unique weapon as well. Shooters are in a spot where they have some great upsides, but little to no downsides.
TLDR, Give weapons that need buffs meaningfull buffs to make the playing field even (I want Dynamo buffs so bad)
The main issue always boils down to the dev team being scared of over-buffing every other weapon class, despite the fact that other weapons all have glaring weaknesses that you can take advantage of. There's a common sentiment in fighting game communities of "Buffs always feel good, and nerfs always feel bad", and that holds up 99% of the time, instead of making a strong weapon weaker, just make the weaker weapons strong, that way everyone feels good about the weapon they love playing.
@@johndelanie3649 as someone who plays a bottom tier weapon that had to change to a top tier to keep up with things I disagree with the final statement you made. I feel as if every weapon should be at least in a skill bubble (Some slightly better weapons, Some slightly worse weapons, most on same power level) to allow all weapons to be played in a competitive enviorment. (For the record I played Tri-Stringer and Dynamo and switched to Stamper)
TLDR Nerfs are still something that we need
@@roobie_not_ruby Why disagree? That sounds like the exact same thing I said
@@johndelanie3649 wait . . . my brain interpreted it wrong, my bad. I thought you were saying that we need only buffs initially but after reading it back a couple times I realized we are saying the same thing.
Love the intro of this video, would love more fancy editing like that
Shooters aren't "OP" per se but they'll always be in step with or slightly above other top tier picks because they're the 'new player' weapon and they want to retain a large casual audience, so they'll always be buffed no matter what.

Hey, I love seeing captain astronaut in this video, such an underrated creator
0:03 Remember early splatoon 2? 😭
I like shooters being common. They are the generalists of the game, and no matter what, you should have a generalist option to fall back on if your specialty isn’t relevant. However, while Splatoon 3 makes the specialists strong enough to be relevant, Splatoon 2 made the generalists too good without making the specialists strong enough to compete. There were often cases where a shooter outclassed a specialist at their own niche, and that’s when it becomes an issue. It’s like if something like Rainbow Six Siege introduced a basic assault rifle that sniped better than the snipers while still being an assault rifle, or if Smash Ultimate made Mario a better zoner than the actual zoners. That was, in my opinion, the big issue of shooters in Splatoon 2, and why they’re so much better now.
Im glad i didnt know much about s2 meta.
Bro the production quality has gotten STONKS
Shout out Logi for making the most GOATED intro of all time!
Personally I would like to see more diversification of the shooter main weapons and particularly bigger weaknesses on individual ones. I think it's fine for a couple to be well rounded, but its pretty boring when half the class is. With that in mind I think you could reasonably hit any one of pps, ink efficiency, kill time, paint output, framedata/mobility across a variety of weapons and have them be in a much better place where they step on each other's toes less and are far less centralizing. So like 52 now really has to have ink management, tune nzap mobility down a bit, hit the fighting on splash to emphasis it's mobility and paint output.
4:48 😢 please Nintendo give us a buff or a new kit to show how Stringers can be fun and powerful
It really depends on who you ask, and what their overall gaming experience is. Shooters are designed to be the most balanced class. . .meaning its easy for any to pick up and play, meaning a LOT of people gravitate towards them so we see people pushing them a whole bunch.
It especially seems to matter most depending on what your experience with Splatoon itself is. If you're coming from a regular shooter. . .yeah, you're going to gravitate towards a shooter first, and then maybe a Splatling or Charger. A bucket, Brush, or Roller just seems odd, and different. . .and when you first play them. . .they play so differently that the adjustment can be offputting.
No newbie for example is going to see amazing results with something like an Explosher or a Dynamo Roller. They're so drastically from the 'point and shoot' shooter like Splash or TTek.
Im loving the captain astronaut in here
Now do a "One year later, is Splatana Stamper still OP?"

Great video. If it’s not too much you should make a video about splatlings
I'm happy to also see some positive things being said about the game. We all, as a community, (rightfully) love to point out the flaws of the game to make it even better. But I do think it is important sometimes to stop and recognize where we come from and the awesome traits this game still has.
I used to main JR in S2 and still use it a good amount in S3 but now I get to use weapons like machine and S-blast a lot more and they're so much more fun even when I benefited so much from being a high paint weapon with ink armor
The stringer class deserves better.
It baffles me how the flagship weapon of the game is somehow at a worse spot rn than the Brella class.
4:50... poor stringers 😔

They are not broken, they're just a strong class. You have weapons that can deal with shooters. All the dev's have to do is stop giving it buffs.

Stringers: can hit angles sloshers normally can at longer range- fuck thats explosher.
Bro all 6 stringer mains are gonna wage war with you
Nah, because I'm a stringer player and I agree with him.
I love playing it but the devs need to give the class some serious love beyond the smallest, insignificant buffs. Until then, stringers are just a very difficult and inconsistent class to play, where the effort you put in is often not rewarded over something basic like a shooter.
I often play splatlings, so im always baffled by how often specials are launched at me, until i picked up some shooters to play. I swear there are games where ill get killed by 2 or 3 specials being launched at me, so ill run back out and those same specials will be thrown at me again, within the span of 10 seconds. I didnt understand until i played a shooter, especially the ones with high fire rate, holy crap, i get my special all the time! And if you have the right gear, you basically always have ur special ready. Some will say "skill issue" and ur right, i dont even try to play video games for the purpose of playing in the top ranks, i just like having fun, but barely being able to leave spawn from special spamming weapons can feel really defeating, like its different when it is a skill issue and someone just splats me because they are more skilled, they are better, that i can handle. I cant handle being splatted every 10 seconds by tenta missle followed by killer wail followed by booyah bomb.
Then there are some weapons where i refuse to use the special. Like you want me to use a zipcaster? That new one with the screen? It moves so slow i didnt even know what it did due to how little of a threat it was. Like some specials require such precision and tactical play, while others are "eh just chuck it in the enemys general direction and theres a 60% chance youll get someone" i dont get it personally, but again, im not a pro player by any means so this could be an "i suck at video games" issue
lol the davinci resolve media not found is so real

Shooter’s definitely are OP but there’s many non-shooters that are certainly viable which is a good thing
3:54 im getting flashbacks...... {{ No fall off range, no cooldown charge, splat easy ink vac user when it s inside the vac........ }}
The absolute whiplash I received when it suddenly cut to Capt. Astro caught me way off guard
I mostly find shooters annoying when it comes to online matchmaking below top level. In online matchmaking, you don’t have the luxury of communicating with your teammates and choosing team comps to accommodate for weaknesses of individuals and their weapons, no matter how vital. So when meta shooters *lack* most glaring weaknesses, it also means those shooters have the easiest time cracking skill or comp differences wide open. A good shooter player is like a one-man army that can adapt to whatever a team needs, and is the most capable option of dominating a match alone- as most other weapons lack too much in paint and/or mobility. Shooters have the easiest time ignoring that this is a *team-based* video game. And that often doesn’t feel very fair if you want to use anything else.
I feel as if In splat 1 all the more versified classes were stronger like sloshes to blasters. Everything excluding shooters were, extremely good for many good reason mainly damage up. But in 2 it’s 💯% dominated by shooters, well I’m assuming, Nintendo said well we need more shooters to thrive. Then in splat three they, are trying to back to splat 1 variety and allow the shooters to also be available.
definitely agree on special points, should be 200 at least(s pro/92 gal 190 maybe). from my little corner of s+ soloverse, brellas seem to be the only ones hardly used. have wondered why duelies are not considered a part of shooters? they do the same thing with the bonus of rolling around sooo...?
Dualies may have roughly the same firing but they have two reticles as well as the dodge rolls that converge the aiming are what separates them from shooters
As a dualie player, no, dualies may be similar but they are not shooters.
In-game UX-wise, that's gonna be back to Splatoon 2's weapon navigation mess, where something like BLASTERS were considered a "shooter".
Precisely, you've said it: I CANNOT DODGE ROLL WITH SHOOTERS. You can ask my muscle memory how awkward it was trying and failing to dodge roll with Aerospray again and again.
When I sort weapons by class, I expect to see a category of weapons I can roll with, ie. Dualies. Having to scroll through Jr's, Zaps, Aeros, Gals, Splats, H3 L3 trying to find the dual gun is just.
Why?
Lmao.
Heck there's enough dualie variations and kits for there to be its own category. Splatana and Stringer has 4 each. Dualies have 8.
The main weakness of dualies is one of the differences that separate it from shooters. It's most consistent damage is locked in turret mode forcing it to dodge roll and be grounded making it pretty punishable, especially against specials like Wave and Wail while shooters can still consistently deal damage even when pressured since it can just dip in and out with barely any drawback which its superior paint emphasizes even more.
Shooters don't have dodge rolls, dual firing modes (except for squeezer) from turret mode, or significant endlag (which dualies have after dodge rolls).
They play very differently to shooters.
Prochara uploaded so it’s gonna be a good day lol. Also i think shooters aren’t that OP but other weapons could use some buffs.
This was fair and nice, tysm
That CptAstro jumpscare 😂
I think a video about the consequences of the order weapons theoretically keeping their single-player kits would be fun!
This is a point I think is a major difference between solo and comp. In comp they are an extremely easy weapon that can be slotted into many teams making them good. In solo they sometimes feel so good they are horrible to fight and braindead easy to play. They are hard to punish and when played feel like they allow people to get away with horrible mistakes because of their strengths
I personally think they never deserved their mobility buffs in the first place and should get reverted for that. I like having a challenge when I play and shooters aren't a challenge just a mistake.
And before anyone comments, no I heavly disagree that the entire game should revolve around high level comp. It should influence it but not be the only factor in gameplay balance. Most points I can shrug off due to their being useful in comp but shooters are not one of them. The game feels worse every buff they get.
Ca... can we appreciate the editing with this video? Idk if it's just me but the visuals were amazing on this one
Help chara is pointing a k 52 at me and forcing me to watch this video :(

ayo captain astronaut cameo
Part of the problem is the community. People get hyper focused on single aspects like time-to-splat, while ignoring the weaknesses. Shooters can pressure, paint, and splat consistently at a distance. No other type has this massive advantage. Shooting over walls or at a longer range in a burst shot or low time-to-splat at short range aren't as strong as constant pressure, paint, and splat at range.
Buckets need a lot more attack power.
Snipers need better ink efficiency
Brushes need more distant painting/attack options
rollers need faster and stronger flick attacks
Bows need way bigger explosions on arrows
Shooters all need ink efficiency nerfs.
This, shooters are supposed to be the jack-of-all-trades, master of none weapon, but the issue therein lies that if you give them so many buffs that the 'master of none' part of that stops holding up, you've just got a weapon with no real weaknesses outside of getting outranged, which any half-decent player can deal with no problem
@@johndelanie3649as the full saying goes: Jack of all trades, master of none, yet oftentimes better than a master of one.

@@HeDronHeDronHedron music to my ears
@@harmless9336in what universe is this perfectly fine casually, ignoring the fact that squeezer would become a million times more broken and vshot would be nerfed to the ground
@@HeDronHeDronHedron until about lower mid when people actually start looking at what the game does, people don't even know startup rng exists. Changing that wouldn't make a noticeable difference to most players. The biggest thing is it would nerf gals which have no business ever having good rng bursts. Shot would be perfectly fine as it's unnecessary buff made its rng basically nonexistant even when maxed, pro and jet would also have similar ignorance to this.
Squeezer and splash could get other nerfs instead, don't really care how on this topic though.
Another major thing though would be it buffing the lower tiers. Startup rng is basically useless on nova which wants to keep firing for long durations and spreads too fast for a lethal burst to be accurate; this would give both it and spray painting bursts that turn into an actual accurate weapons during engagements.

While I agree with you in general, I still think shooters are a tad too good rn. I'd like them to improve the movement of non-shooter weapons and maybe do something about special spam. No shooter should be below 190p EVER (and only the poorly painting shooter should be at 190p).
But I completely agree - it's much better than in Splatoon 2. I notice this whenever I go back to that game for PBs and stuff. Facing kshot is just no fun.
