On June 28th 2023 - Harrison Ford will embark on his last adventure as Indiana Jones in THE DIAL OF DESTINY, finally bringing an end to a cinematic legacy that spans three decades - but does that mean the end of Indiana Jones?
Today we'll be exploring the wild world of Indiana Jones video games and tracing it's history from it's early days in the arcade through to it's death on the Xbox and PlayStation. Along the way we'll cover everything from Monkey Island to Star Wars, Tomb Raider to Uncharted, The NES to the Nintendo 64 - all in hopes of discovering what the future could hold for Henry Jones Junior.
It's part critique, part retrospective, part review and part history lesson - obviously full of spoilers and obviously full of my opinions.

I slept the whole night and woke up here😅
A little known fact: in "The Last Crusade - The adventure game", you can prevent Elsa to leave with the grail, saving her. This really shows how Lucasarts was committed to give the players as much freedom approaching the puzzles as possible!
Wow I actually had no idea? Which is pretty insane considering I played through it quite a few times for footage and notes! It's such a cool little game
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Yep! The trick is: after saving your father with the grail, you have a split second to grab it before Elsa does. If you do, you can give it back to the knight for an alternate ending. It's really a masterclass on how to do branching paths without making a game collapse onto itself!
That's extremely cool to hear and I WISH I'd included it!
I remember this. I thought the ending dialogue with Elsa alive does make her slightly more sympathetic.
@@RappingNinja Yeah. I remember that in that ending when the subject of Indy being named after the dog comes up she muses about her mother having a cat named Elsa.
I was the lead designer and writer of Staff of Kings PSP, and this video MADE MY DAY. We were always working with limited budgets and timeframes at Amaze, and the end of a project was usually a letdown as we let the game stumble out the door. Hearing someone appreciate one of those old games, so many years later, really makes me happy. Thank you!
(I work at Undead Labs now, and these days, we get to take WAY TOO LONG on a game, instead!)
That's extremely cool to hear! Whenever I do these licensed game videos I always try to be fair to whatever game I cover and go in with the view that it's often the circumstances that prompt low quality games rather than anything nefarious on the part of the developers!
That being said I really enjoyed Staff of Kings PSP - it was something of a tonic to the unending frustration of the Wii version! Were you there while the studio was working on Lord of the Rings Tactics? That was another unexpectedly interesting licensed game I covered and I was surprised to see it also came from Amaze!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I was around, but the studio had a LOT of individual teams and internal divisions (making like a dozen different games a year), so I wasn't involved at all in LOTR.
I knew that was one of the ones we were prouder of as a studio, though!
(I won't point you towards ALL the games I worked on, because some of them really were unmitigated disasters. Please never do a retrospective on Kung Fu Panda games, because that is a source of deep shame.)
Ok am I crazy I 100% owned a version of staff of kings on PS2! Did I own a boot leg version or something?
@@mackenzieregis1351 Yeah, I don’t know how that would have been possible. Maybe someone did a bootleg port of the PSP version? Was that a thing? I have no idea.
Wikipedia says the ps2 launched alongside the psp versions in 2009 🤷♂️ maybe it was limited release or region locked to North America
As someone who was the target age of Lego games when the Lego Indy games came out, I can actually say that a lot of us grew up on these movies (thanks to our parents having grown up on them too) and so we were never confused by the cutscenes' reliance on knowledge of the source material. Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars trilogy were staples of my, and other kids', childhoods.
this
plus if it made us curious, we could always ask our parents to show us the movies to get a deeper understanding of the story. but yeah, those movies are classics, everyone's seen them lol
i can NEVER EVER get in to the Lego games/movies hype. They basically just take what is very famous and then Lego-ize it. It's almost kind of plagiarism and i hate they have such huge success
@@rgerber thas kinda a wild take
Yep this.. Generations are being dumbed down sadly
Don’t want to sound too over the top here 😅 But your research, voiceover and presentation set the gold standard for retrospectives on RUclips.
You should be really proud. Keep up the great work!
That's extremely kind and generous of you - thanks so much!
This week has been a real slog as I've been working 14 hour days of editing while we have a heatwave. I'm not gonna lie, it has at times been rather miserable so getting feedback like this really makes it all worth it. I really appreciate it and hope you enjoyed watching it!
Agreed, you've spoiled me. The only other one who has come close is the guy who did the Entire History of Video Games.
@@jonathanstark9147neverknowsbest. I agree. Those two are for my taste the absolute best, when it comes to retrospectives. I do not like the retrospectives, where its mostly a retelling of every single quest in the game. For me neverknowsbest and i finished a videogame found a really good balance between retelling, analysing and contextualising.
@@IFinishedAVideoGame jesus man dont overwork your self
@IFinishedAVideoGame really is a true blessing in this greedy and soulless videogame world. I can't state how much I appreciate your thorough and comprehensive work, the research that went into it and of course your mastery of not merely recollecting facts about oldies but actually opening your audience to marvelous tales of level design and game crafting found in obscure or forgotten gems that often set huge milestones in the industry.
MUCH LOVE
I’m really growing fond of your retrospectives. Your pleasant voice, in-depth research and solid writing make your channel a real RUclips gem.
Thanks so much. I don't think you can ask for anymore than being a hidden gem on RUclips these days! Hope you enjoyed the video!
THAT IS CORRECT
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I certainly did, watched the whole thing and enjoyed every minute of it!
Well stated, agreed 100%.
I just keep waking up to them
Let's all hope Dial of Destiny actually delivers eh? Hopefully this video can provide some feature length Indy content even if it doesn't... Also here is the link to my Patreon in case you want to support the channel which is obviously massively appreciated (especially in the event Disney come after me) - patreon.com/IFinishedAVideoGame
Cool!
Thanks for all the hard work, and clear passion.....but you missed a game. Lego Indy 2 is VERY different on PSP and DS.
Yeah it's a bit of an odd one with the Lego games. I did the same in the LOTR video and the justification is really just that I don't want the back end of the video to be dominated by Lego games when they don't have a huge bearing on the wider story of the franchise.
I almost think they exist in their own world separate to the rest of the franchise but for both LOTR and Indy there are only two so I might as well chuck them in!
Hopefully that explains it!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame
It does, but since the portable is a throwback to traditional Lego gameplay, I'd argue it's a Staff of Kings on PSP situation.
And that anyone watching that many hours deserves to know there's another game worth checking out.
@@Channel-gz9hmit did, my second favourite of the movies! :)
Hyped because Fate of Atlantis is literally one of the best games ever.
Edit: I’m glad you brought up the voice acting for Indy in Fate of Atlantis. The impression of Harrison Ford as Indy that Doug Lee does is uncanny. Just amazing.
Honestly he nails everything about the character. It's absolutely crazy that he'd hardly had any high profile jobs before stepping into the recording booth for Fate!
Damn man I LOVED Fate of Atlantis. It was one of my very first games and took me more than a year to finish, I played the undubbed italian version tho, never knew there was a dubbed One.
@@Hitsu1989 Same here. I played the undubbed german version and wasn't aware there's one with voice acting out there.
I had that game as a kid on PC and loved it but could never beat it. I would get stuck on the boat not knowing what to do. I have it on steam now and really want to do a play through
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on DOS was the only game my dad played with me. I still have the physical journal they included to solve puzzles. Thanks for reminding me of these games.
You're welcome - I'm glad this game could be a good memory for you!
OMG! I thought i was the only one who had this experience...my dad and I, rare moments of bonding. Never known anyone else who even knows of the games.
me and my dad tried and failed to beat the water temple that was funny thinking back having since completed the game many times lol.. Pinball was big in bars in my day too and also my dad gave me a fortune in change so i could complete silent scope a sniper arcade game with big rifle and 2nd screen in the scope :D good times
As a kid I could never pass the Nazis as they always fought. Me I didn't know you can pass the fights till now.
RIP dad
I'm kinda baffled that we haven't gotten a Telltale-style episodic adventure game. It's the perfect fit for this franchise, not only for striking a balance of narrative and puzzle focus with quick bursts of action across a variety of locales, but because episodic adventure is literally the storytelling format of the old cliffhanger serials that Indiana Jones is based on.
That's really a fantastic idea - I think people would love a 3D telltale experience influenced by Fate of Atlantis!
Telltale have worked with Lucasfilm on games before, they even made a Monkey Island game at one point! I wouldn't put it past new Telltale being able to call up someone to get the license!
@@Satellaview1889new telltale? I thought they went bust
@@Mawyman2316 The did, but the name, IP, and some of the old people were bought up and restored by, either Gearbox or Devolver. I think, not so sure on who did it.
But they definitely are back. They published The Wolf Among Us 2 a couple months ago, and they have some other projects in the works.
@@Satellaview1889 Some of the old guys formed a new company, Dramatic Labs. They made a Telltale like Star Trek game called Star Trek: Resurgence and it's great if you like 90s Star Trek and Telltale games.
It really does feel like 90s Trek as well, not the new Star Trek
I just woke up to this video being over. Not sure if it was good or not but it didn’t startle me awake. 10/10, enjoy the watch time my friend
Whether Dial of Destiny delivers or Lucasfilm have just dumped another egg in our faces, all that matters if you've pumped out another legendarily comprehensive piece of gaming history!
Thanks so much my friend. Hopefully it does the series justice until Machine Games come out with their offering!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I never played Uncharted but jesus somebody just give me a more modern Tomb-Raider style action-adventure game where I'm Indy and I'll f ucking play it lolol
No worries dude, keep doing what you do!

@@DorohnL the first 25 min yes but after its not Indiana jones, not tryin to be a hater
@@solayman-jq8ooI don't know what you mean by that, but the movie is Indiana Jones distilled. I'd argue it is TOO Indiana Jones
I cant stress how much I love these videos Holy shit. They're always just so entertaining and easy to watch.
That's really cool to hear considering I really try to make the videos have a laid back atmosphere. No crazy editing, no goofy faces, no lame jokes - just chilled stories about the golden age of gaming!
I'm calling it already more people will watch this video than Indiana Jones 5
Judging by how the movie is already out and I don't think I'm alone in this comment being the first I've heard of it, I think you might be more correct than you realize
@@michaelmercer9469yeah wouldn't be suprising if they just dump it on to streaming services a week or two after it's out since the critical reception doesn't seem in the movies favor at all
@@davitnozadze7291 Didn't they have to re-cut the movie like a month before release because the test audiences absolutely and categorically hated it?
@@Horvath_Gabori honestly don't know but we will just have to wait and see if that affects the publics opinion on the movie
That's unlikely..
This channel should be bigger than it is! But it's videos have reached up to 1+ Million views (how many of those are different people?), and not more.
Less than 1 million people watching a widespread release!? Specially when Mission Impossible is soon to join theaters, and people will most likely see it being played as well?
I may not be an Indiana Jones fan, but I am a big I Finished A Video Game fan so you know I gotta binge all 3 hours and 46 minutes in one sitting. Interested to learn about these Indiana Jones games though cause I've never played one before haha
Honestly I consider it the biggest compliment if someone watches and enjoys one of my videos without knowing anything before hand! Hopefully it's a good watch!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Yep, it was a solid watch. Interested in maybe trying out The Fate of Atlantis (Adventure Game) now.
I usually watch retrospectives to sleep and never think about them again, but this one feels different. It's the first video of this type I watched in its entirety and I enjoyed every second of it. Thank you for almost a week's worth of entertainment in my free time. I'm definitely going to watch the LOTR retrospective you've mentioned a few times next. It's an instant subscribe for me
That's really awesome to hear. I know it's sound absurd but knowing I've gone from sleep video to watch video is a pretty big compliment in 2024! Hope you enjoy the LOTR one!
I just woke up to this all i heard was something bout mud
GodzillaMendoza's Spider-Man games retrospective is another one like that
I watch your videos as "sleep videos" but that's the biggest compliment in my book. It's what I crave for after a tiring long day, it's soothing and relaxing. My "sleep videos" are the most valuable for me :D@IFinishedAVideoGame
The infernal machine was one of the first adventure games I played. Man did I sink hours into that title. For me that game remained a gem of my childhood. Always booting it up after getting from school to figure out how to progress on to the next level and puzzle
I think I spent a month in Tian Shan river
Haven’t even played the Indiana Jones games but absolutely loved how thorough, insightful and well written this retrospective was.
Love all of your videos. Thanks for all of your hard work.
This is so insanely generous of you. It means a huge amount so thank you from the bottom of my heart.
It's amazing to hear people who have no familiarity with the franchise enjoying the video. It's really the ultimate compliment in a way - so thank you once again and hopefully I'll continue making stuff you enjoy!

Moviebob said it best. nostalgia has died when every corporations constantly keep it alive like ugly rotten zombies. Is it still nostalgia when you don't allow franchises to ever die ?
Great Nostalgic video! I was born in 71. I’m happy that I got to grow up in the 70’s and 80’s. The 90’s was great to. I’ll always love Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Retro Gaming, etc. I still watch the movies and play games on the Atari, Colecovision and NES. A big shout out for Yars Revenge! One of my favorites on the Atari 2600. 👍
Ah I'm jealous! You saw this industry turn from a tiny chick into a full grown global hen! Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@IFinishedAVideoGameThanks! I definitely liked and subbed. I also wanted to mention that I loved The Empire Strikes back on the Atari. Me and friend would take turns on that one. That was a button Masher! LoL! And, Nothing will ever top the original George Lucas Star Wars Trilogy. Those movies were ahead of their time! 👍
@GodofWarChuka I loved Empire on the 2600 as well. I remeber being so impressed with and nerded out over those at-at walkers lol
Lego always manages to turn violent scenes into some fantastic dark humor. My favorite instance is in Lego Harry Potter when (spoiler) they recreate Harry bringing back Cedric's dead body to his dad as him bringing the PIECES, and Cedric's dad getting the instructions to put his son back together 💀
That sounds hilarious. Maybe one day I'll get to covering Harry Potter games and get to see it haha
Ikr lego games are sooo underrated they rly are so funny
fate of atlantis was one of my favourite games growing up. lead me down the wonderful rabbit hole of point and click adventure games. sam and max hit the road, day of the tentacle, freddy pharkas frontier pharmacist, heck even zak mckracken and the alien mindbenders.
It's time for the old man to show the kids why He is the reason to why Lara Croft and Nate Drake excist in the first place. I hope the new Indiana Jones game come sooner than later. The Emperor's Tomb is my favorite Indiana Jones game. Another great video, I always smile when I see a new video from you.
Thanks very much! Hopefully I've done a good job at shining a light on this weird franchise and it's goofy history!
The amount of context, research, and information in this video is insane and very well done.
Thanks very much!
🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations, adventurer extraordinaire!
You've conquered challenges with a daring flair,
Just like Indiana Jones, with his hat and whip,
You've shown true grit on this epic trip.
Through ancient ruins and treacherous lands,
You've unearthed mysteries with your skilled hands.
You've deciphered codes and escaped narrow scrapes,
Embracing the thrill that every quest shapes.
🤠
I love you for writing this
I respectfully disagree about the Emperor’s Tomb. It was just fantastic from go to woe. Absolutely thrilling to play..all of it!😊
Ps.. loved this video..just fantastic..so interesting I watched it all!🤠👍
That's awesome to hear!
This is a video I either always wake up to or it's in my recommendations after another longer video that I have fallen asleep towards either way due to your dedication I'll be watching this video throughout the next week and a half😭✊🏾
The Infernal Machine is in my top 3 favourite games of all time. It is far more stable on windows 98-XP, yet far more beautiful and smooth on N64. There's a give and take. And yes, the last 3 levels are just batshit insane. It's why i wasn't surprised about Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls haha
There are also dozens of easter eggs. My favourite is in the mines. One of the level designers left a note and signature
I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did. While it's certainly got it's flaws there is just something wonderfully enjoyable about those early 3D adventure games
Man, the young Indiana show… I watched all of it when I was very young and I loved it!!! Nobody has ever mentioned it since. I had the box set, and I always remember it being like 5 seasons long 😂, I guess maybe it felt like that because of the pacing and my young brain just did it’s thing
It's surprisingly good I think! I had a lot of fun watching episodes for this retrospective and had to pull myself away from writing about 25 minutes in defence of it!
I love the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and am so glad that it is on Disney+ now. I love the history references and all of the real location filming. I can't wait to share this with my kids someday and discuss history with them 🤠
Fate of Atlantis was a treasure growing up. Charming, fun, recognizable, witty. A 9 out of 10 in my opinion. My only issue was similar to yours about the Atlantis phase where it suffered classic point and click short comings. There's a part where the instructions for how to operate the giant drill are poorly scribbled on the wall ONE screen removed from its location, requiring you collect vaguely lever shaped items and just 'decipher' the scribble to know how to arrange them on the machine. An earlier puzzle along the same lines did a far better job integrating the proper stone disk combination into the murals of nearby walls, as if the clues weren't just poorly placed nearby but rather constructions of the backdrop. You had to soak in the entirety of the scene as opposed to just looking at the singular odd thing out.
Okay, not even 30 seconds in and hearing a guitar rendition of Scars of Time. I can tell it's gonna be good.
I've been dying to use that in a video and a meditative monologue about the power of nostalgia seemed too perfect to miss
I was 4 years old when I first played lego Indiana Jones, it was one of my first video game experiences and I absolutely loved it. Like you said I also didn’t really understand what was happening, but my Grandpa was usually with me while I played and he explained enough for me to have some grasp on the story
That's a really nice memory. Your grandpa sounds like an awesome dude
That simple explanation of nostalgia at the beginning hit me hard for some reason. What I wouldn't give for a simpler time again.
I've become something of a nostalgia merchant in the last year so I wanted to make sure I did justice to the emotion. It's not just pointless pining for the past but something real and meaningful!
u need sum memberberries 🤣
I can only speak for myself but as a hard-core Indy fan I absolutely loved Emperor's Tomb. And while I can agree its quality does somewhat dip towards the end its still the best Indiana Jones game we got and wish we had more Indy games like it.
I think a version of Emperor's Tomb that can blend itself with some of the charm and character of Fate of Atlantis would be my dream combination!
I can only think you didn't play the point n click games. They're both better than emperor's tomb
@@fandangobrandango7864 you'd assume wrong, pal.
Thank you for that! We loved making Emperor's Tomb!
@@code82star12 Its one of my favourite childhood games and I still know the levels by heart. Recently went back to play it after like 10 years or so, I still have it on my PC. This game is a gem!
A note about rogue squadron, it was bundled with creative CD-ROM drives… for many it was the first CD-ROM game.
This brings back so many memories. I remember playing the Emperors tomb as a little kid and then walking around my house with imagining myself as Indy and drinking from my imaginary canteen.
Now that's some peak kid behaviour! I'm sure it was very cute
That Jeep level in Infernal Machine was a highlight for me. I left a save there just so that I could replay it whenever I was in the mood.
Indiana Jones really did not need any movies after The Last Crusade. But Fate of the Atlantic is so good, it feels like a wordy successor, unlike some actual films... cough. Also, lego Indiana Jones was the Lego game I played most as a kid I think it's really underrated.
I completely agree. Hal Barwood just had that special something when it came to writing that nailed the Indiana Jones atmosphere for Atlantis and Infernal Machine!
God I love the Infernal Machine. My dad played it when i was a kid, and I started playing it myself soon thereafter. He had to help me beat Quetzacoatl cus i was so scared of it haha. It's the first game i ever played, and it's a formative piece of my childhood and love for Indiana Jones as a whole
That's awesome to hear - also very much good guy Dad for stepping in when the giant lizard turns up!
I LOVED the Emperor's Tomb as a kid! Great adventure game. Hand to hand combat and punching nasiz was so brutally satisfying 😅
Fate of Atlantis is the first real game adventure game I ever played. I remember playing through while sitting on my mom’s lap. We got stuck flying the balloon, which I eventually figured out on my own. It took a few years of repeated play throughs before I even realized that there were multiple paths. I’ve probably beaten the game well over a dozen times by this point. Fate of Atlantis has as fond of a place in my heart as any of the films, if not more. It is an equal part of the trilogy and possibly the best and most faithful movie tie-in ever made.
It's certainly got to be up there in terms of licensed games. It's absolutely the best one I've ever covered on this channel that's for sure!
Emperors Tomb was one of the best games I ever played! Not sure why it didnt do well
actually yeah that's a good question. i bet it has to do with marketing. no movie during that time. but that's when some of the best spin offs were made, without a movie tie in. mainly just lucasarts stuff i'm referring to
Didn't even know there were this many Indiana Jones games, I only ever played the Emperor's Tomb, it was fine back when I played it but I'm not sure it aged that well.
It sort of did and also didn't - hopefully my point comes across in the video because I do genuinely love large parts of that game!
Played it few months back, good enough even today, played worse new games, so still has plenty of life
I appreciated your detailed take on Emperor's Tomb. It has some really excellent elements and is very much worth playing, despite faltering in some later sections.
Absolutely - the first half is probably the strongest slice of Indy gameplay in this entire video (outside of Fate of Atlantis but I understand that has niche appeal)
I think if it could just open up a bit with some more variety and maybe a touch more dialogue it would have been a real homerun!
With some more polish, I think it would have been one of the best Indy games. It looked really fun and had interesting gameplay for the time.
I remember The Infernal Machine fondly and honestly it still baffles how I even managed to play through it back in the in the day when googling guides just wasn't how it is today. (I don't think google was even a thing back then)
Hours upon hours of just wondering what to do till something eventually or accidentally clicks.
It's kinda crazy the amount of hours we used to dump into games before the internet right? I think my original playthrough of FF7 where I had no idea how any of the systems worked or where I was ever supposed to be going must have been something like 250 hours long!
Everyone is singing your well-deserved praises, but nobody seems to be pointing out your editing. Just in the last few minutes, you talked about how LucasArts failed to release a console game in four years while showing 1313 (RIP), then talked about how LucasArts was doing a poor job with Indy while showing Indy drive a Jeep off a cliff.
Subtle, hilarious, heart-wrenching, and as well done as always.
That's actually really nice to hear as I rarely ever get compliments on my editing. I recognise that it really takes a back seat to the script and really isn't a major focus BUT I really do try to put some effort into it with clip selection.
I often throw in little jokes and nods to things that put a smile on my face so it's nice to know it's being noticed!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame they are noticed! Well done!
But it's like 3 AM in the UK, go to bed 😂
You have to do a starwars one. This just makes me appreciate what we once had. As bad as they look compared to today, and janky as they were, those games back then had much more heart, soul and passion put into them. I wish I could go back to the 90s and 2000s so bad.
My aim is to produce one next year!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Awesome. Your channel is amazing and it truly gives me beautiful nostalgia each video I watch. I wish you millions of subs and success.
I'm glad someone acknowledged how hard The Infernal Machine was. I got stuck on Shambala Sanctuary as a child. My dad started helping me, only to realize we were both stuck. 😂
The complexity of that level is absolutely ridiculous! I'm not even sure that my explanation really did justice for just how confusing and sprawling it is!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame
I was cheering when you said Shambala is the worst example of convoluted level design, because pea-brain child me couldn't figure out how to give the bell-dwelling monk the magic Chia pet, then use the space RPG to destroy the Ice Raptor. Super fun game, but I was always so discouraged playing it as a kid.
Finally finished this video. First of all, I just want to say that editing my last video took longer than it needed to because I kept getting distracted by this. Second of all, as if it needs to be said, outstanding job. I've had so little time to watch long-form videos like I used to because of my own work schedule, but I genuinely look forward to your videos. You maintain such a great, relaxed pace so as to appreciate the minutiae of each game, but also keep me looking forward to what's coming next.
In terms of appreciating video game history & it's quirks, yours is the definitive channel, far as I'm concerned.
That's really kind of you man. I've got to say that I'm in a similar boat and my consumption of longer videos has also fallen through the floor thanks to work. Just like you said though - I always make time for yours and always look forward to them!
We need to find a way to give the people a crossover episode - best RPG on every console arena deathmatch podcast lmao
Every time I go to sleep I wake up two hours in your vid
5 minutes in and i can say, NOBODY does this retrospective genre better than you do! Incredible work!
Thank you so much my friend. That really means a lot to hear!
Really also shows how important different people are to a project. Lucas seems to have good ideas, making plans, and imagining worlds, but leaving everything to him can prove disastrous. Also fun to see how movies and games grew side by side
Oh Lucas has really been done dirty by the internet. He's an inarguable genius but seems to only be judged by his worst projects rather than his best!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame he's human, and humanity is flawed..! And... He doesn't need to be anything more or less.
I've not watched this yet, but I thought it would be a good time and place to say this: you are absolutely one of the best video game content channels on RUclips. Just wanted to show some appreciation for the work you put in. There's not many channels out there that I watch every single video they put out, but yours is one of them.
Thanks so much. That's really nice to hear and I really appreciate you taking the time to say it! It can be easy to get wrapped up in criticism when you release something so thanks for cutting through that!
I hope they mention that Indiana Jones's skeleton can be found in Fallout New Vegas! Even if it's just as a joke, it'll still make me happy lol
Seeing this video after watching the first trailer of Indiana Jones and The Great Circle. A full fledge Indy game that is looking amazing. Thanks for the video.
Yeah I can't wait for it! I think it looks like a really interesting take on the franchise and I'm really pleased they didn't just make an Uncharted clone!
Being different than Uncharted is a must. I really do not like the last 2 games from the franchise. After the departure of Amy, Uncharted has dropped significantly for me.
I can't wait to see MachineGames take on Indiana Jones with their experience on the Wolfenstein games, probably set in the 1930s/40s it could be a big comeback for one of my favourite characters in cinema and media.
Let's hope so - I have high hopes that they'd be able to put something interesting together!
I will never escape the never ending stream of video essays im Doomed to watch them for the rest of time
I kinda see it as more of a netflix documentary of reviews! Hope it's enjoyable!
ikr my brrains thirst for completion of all instances and alternatives will be my undoing i no longer have time to play games anymore im too busy tryin to keep up with the flood lol!
It's a different version, but that opening song is absolutely the song that plays in the intro cinematic of Chrono Cross. I still have the words memorized.
"What was the start of all this?
When did the cogs of fate begin to turn?
Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now,
From deep within the flow of time.
"Yet, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much.
We hurt others, and were hurt ourselves.
And still we ran like the wind,
Whilst our laughter echoed,
Beneath cerulean skies."
God that takes me back.
Also Ioved your opening perspective on time and nostalgia. A lot of existential philosophy is deeply caught up in the temporal nature of our experience of reality; trying to find or create lasting meaning in a fleeting existence.
I think it's especially pertinent to a discussion of video games and modern entertainment media, because they're so relatively new, but we're all aging. There are people alive who remember a time before video games; people who were here from the very beginning of the medium. But before too long, that will no longer be the case. It kinda changes how it feels; the role it plays in our culture.
I like you man, you seem cool.
You seem cool as well. Thanks for watching!
I remember really cherishing The Emperor's Tomb as a kid, didn't beat it until I was a little older but the variety of gameplay and freedom of the sandbox were really magical being younger. Getting rewarded with little trinkets to pick up by exploring unnecessary areas was really satisfying. The giant white croc scared me more than the sharks did lol
I think the first half of that game is probably the best Indy video game content available at the moment - it's just a shame that it doesn't hold up into the back half in my opinion!
If you guys come here just to watch this video, Go see is other works! They are awesome!
I personally recommend Eternal Darkness. I feel like that video is my child haha
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Yeah, that one was insane!
I love these retrospectives, I’d especially love to see a retrospective of the batman games in those style
That would be really cool to one day take on - there are a lot of interesting games that lots of people seem to have forgotten about. All that ever gets covered is the Arkham games!
Saying “so RUclips wont take my livelihood” just sound so wild. I get what you mean but man what a world we live in now that youtube is actually a viable way to make a living. Well done
Believe me it's even stranger for me than it is for you! I spent almost 10 years working a dreadfully boring corporate job and now I pay my bills with money I make from my strange little video game documentaries.
I can hardly believe it to be honest!
had this video randomly playing at 4 am when i woke up
Based algorithm
This is the best channel to fall asleep watching 😁. RUclips has become so oversaturated and stale; it's great to see a creator show up with such originality.
This channel is an unmitigated gem. Wish you had more subs, but the views you're getting right now are excellent. Please don't stop making these high-effort, long-form retrospectives, you have something incredibly special here.
Thanks very much! Honestly I think things are ticking along quite nicely really! It's always going to be tough to get people to subscribe to such a niche style of video but I've gained almost 100k subs in a year so hopefully this carries on!
Glad you enjoyed this video too!
Didn't even know he was missing. Very unfortunate, but glad he was found so that family and friends can find some peace.
Unfortunately I think peace is anything but what he's getting in the latest film
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Sorry if it seems confusing. I was typing this for another video and then it switched to this mid type and posted it here. I was referring to Julian Sands who had gone missing and who's remains have been found. He was in Warlock, Arachnaphobia, 24 and a bunch of other stuff.
Bro I was sleeping next day I see this video
You have no idea how much I wanted this video, since you announced it. I never really was a fan of the Indiana Jones franchise, never really watched the movies or played the games, except ONE, it was a PS2 game and I have very vague memories about it but 3 images are still very clearly in my head; Indiana Jones in Prague fighting the guys wearing black suits, Indiana Jones fighting in a Japanese/Chinese restaurant at the beginning of a level, and the image that I hate the most, the Kraken fight, that fucking Kraken man, I hated it SO MUCH, I don't think I ever cleared it as a kid, in fact I never finished the game because of it. I cannot remember the game's name at all, but I will edit the comment once you'll talk about it, meanwhile I'll just enjoy the video, thank you so much for it.
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame vid is great yeah, and I finally found it, it was Emperor's Tomb I was talking about. Again, thank you for this video man.
You're welcome my friend!
I will never forget how hype me and my brother were when we saw the trailer for the first Lego Indiana Jones. Before that point they had only done Star Wars or their orIginal IP’s, but after that point we realized they could do just about anything.
I'm sure it was just as great when you played it and it lived up to the hype! I really enjoyed that one, maybe my favourite of the few Lego games I've played!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame yeah! Still such a good game
did you see there was a new indiana jones video game announced? will there be a follow up video for it?
I would imagine so! I streamed it's reveal and I think it looks pretty damn interesting!
I JUST WOKE UP 😂😂😂😂😂
I recently rewatched this retrospective, and I was intrigued by one of your closing lines. Specifically, the one where you propose that Machine Games would be good at making an Indy game, if they can transition their 1st person skills into making a 3rd person game. With the reveal of _The Great Circle,_ we know that it's going to be mostly 1st person, which is a decision most of us clearly didn't expect.
So I just had to ask, what were your thoughts on making the game in this style?
As for myself, I'm actually really digging it. I think it gives the game a more distinct feel than "Uncharted with a hat." That was what _Emperor's Tomb_ and _Staff Kings_ kinda felt like to me. This direction looks to be taking _The Great Circle_ away from the industry's standard for action adventure games. I also liked that they seem to pull the camera out to third person during platforming sections, to make sure they're both uncompromised and fun.
(PS. Also, I loved the consistent theme of nostalgia throughout the retrospective. It gives it a sort running narrative. It's some good writing on your part!)
Honestly - I felt it was a bit of a weird choice at first but the more I've watched the trailer the more I'm convinced it's actually the right choice. It's a perspective they are comfortable with and so rather than having to relearn basic design - they can focus on nailing the feeling of being Indy.
My only potential concerns come from the fact that we haven't seen much of the story so far - that is make or break for this franchise so hopefully they nail the feeling of adventure and historical mythology!
I still love the fact that the final boss of the SNES game is Donovan's skeleton. It's like if The Wizard of Oz game's final boss was the Wicked Witch, and then her second phase was the slime that she melted into.
That's such a perfect comparison
very good video, especially fun to revisit the speculation for the future knowing that indiana jones and the great circle is coming out pretty soon. hope it's good 🤞
Me too! I think from what we've seen so far - it looks promising!
Originally, to solve the two 'cutscene' puzzles in the Grail Temple in the Last Crusade adventure game, you had to consult the real life 'grail diary' supplement the game came with in order to know what part of the screen to click on, to get through the spinning blades and over the 'leap from the lion's head'. If you clicked on the wrong part of the screen, Indy died.
An old form of game copy protection that was patched out of the modern rereleases.
Very good point which I should have addressed! Caught upin my own experience!
About the Emperor's Tomb section: The stealth levels can still be done with fighting if you want, though it does make them way more deadly. So if your main criticism of those parts is the stealth, know that it's not mandatory. The environments also might be duller than others, but is there really a way to make a slightly generic Nazi base more interesting?
Of course, when you play the game as a kid, you don't think critically about things like this (same thing with the "improper" ramping and the game getting way too crazy towards the end), you just wanna have fun with it, and goddamn was it fun. And if you ask me, it still is. I replayed it a few times in recent years, and I found it just as awesome as I remember it being from my childhood. I feel like Emperor's Tomb isn't talked about enough, so I'm glad you did, even if it was in a more critical way than my nostalgia-filled brain would've liked.
About the Lego section: "No consequences for death" b-b-but you lose like 2000 studs and getting them all back can be tricky! In all seriousness, yeah it's easy, but that is not a problem at all, especially when - like you said - all you want is to have fun.
As for the million-stud-collecting secret levels not being worth it, I think quite the opposite, though it might once again be the nostalgia-riddled, non-critical part of my brain talking. I love improving my time, finding optimizations to getting more studs faster and just generally destroying everything in the levels. Though the Warehouse can literally be skipped by getting in a tank and shooting the target endlessly until you get enough studs, so it basically has a fixed completion time of ~3 minutes. Tbh I don't even know how else you would squeeze a million studs out of that level.
About the Lego 2 section: Same thing, my nostalgia wants the game to be regarded as perfect, because it was a big part of my childhood, but with this one, I can fully understand most of the criticisms, specifically the vehicle levels. My biggest problem with them is that I'm a completionist and when it comes to Lego games, I want to break every Lego object in each level and get the most studs possible (even after getting the True Adventurer rank, it's just not enough) but the vehicle levels have so many damn objects that it's near impossible to do that without spending 30+ minutes in an otherwise barely 5 minute level.
As for the goofiness of the cutscenes, you mention the late afternoon kid's show vibe, which is perfectly appealing when you play it as a kid, but with an adult head, yeah, it's a little too ridiculous.
Finally, calling the game "one of the worst in the entire Lego series" might be a little harsh, but again, that's just me.
Overall, I appreciate you covering these games, and despite being more critical than I would've liked, I also appreciate you pointing out flaws in the games that I'd consider perfect solely because they're childhood favorites of mine. Great video.
Thanks very much. Yeah I think you could potentially read my Emperor's Tomb criticisms as a little harsh which is why I wanted to conclude by saying it is a fun video game that does a lot of things right.
I just wanted to avoid the obvious "oh it's the best one and it deserves a remake yada yada" because I feel like so many cult games from that era get that sort of assessment and it kinda washes over the truth of the matter!
But yeah - thanks for watching and commenting!
I am currently obsessed with video game soundtracks, so here's a fun fact: the Fate of Atlantis soundtrack - at least those parts of it that aren't by John Williams - is by Clint Bajakian, Michael Z. Land, and Peter McConnell, the same three-man team responsible for the music in Monkey Island 2 and Day of the Tentacle. The three of them stayed friends after they left LucasArts, and they actually got back together recently to write the music for Return to Monkey Island.
I honestly wish I could speak about the soundtracks more but the copyright system is just so tricksy so you never know when you'll fall foul. You're absolutely spot on and I think Fate may well be some of the best work they did!
the young inidiana jones chronicles and the recut version "the adventures of young indiana jones" was great. i recently discoveered it on disney+ and binged it all. all the loving attention to detail, the costume design, the faithful and believable characterizations showing us a character thata is very much indiana jones, but not yet as experienced and much younger without feeling like an entirely different character. not to mention remy. oh how i love remy. actually my favorite piece of indiana jones media after indy 3
It's kinda weird how much I enjoy the series. I can totally understand why people wouldn't considering the difference to the movies but I just think it's a really creative and interesting piece of TV! Plus you're totally right - Remy is amazing
Which version is better to watch, the original or re-cut?
I’ve started playing Fate of Atlantis via Staff of Kings on Wii.
I have no idea what you did with the algorithm, but I always find a way to autoplay into this video or the Parasyte Eve one.
Same and the parasite eve one is a banger
2 things. Fate of Atlantis is one of the best games ever made. Secondly, don't care what anyone says, but I love Dial Of Destiny. Back to what I expect from Jones films. Ford worked hard here, and the acting was brilliant, especially from Phoebe Waller Bridge. I enjoyed the film very much.
You know I still haven't seen it! I really need to find a bit of time in my schedule and finally sit down to it! I think I burnt myself out on the franchise a little by making this!
Loved it, too!
Easily my favorite long form videos on RUclips. Never seen anything so well researched and paced. Thanks for making the great content.
Thanks very much! That's a big compliment!
indiana jones and the fate of atlantis was my first point and click game.i could barely read english at that time ,had to ask my mom to translate stuff for me.this is the best indiana jones game
I bet it was actually pretty useful for learning a few weird words!
I was sleep and i wake up to this what a great video keep up the good work
Thank you for making this! Until about a week ago, I genuinely thought there were more Indiana Jones movies--to correlate with the many video game titles I've seen in game stores. I never knew there were so many individual and original stories in the games until this video.
It's one of the coolest things about the series to be honest. You wouldn't often see adaptations that take the character into new places!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I feel like, the closest analogy would The Matrix MMO from back in the day. Star Wars video games really only has two modes: adapting the film, or uses original characters to explore a different part of the vast, vast galaxy. (See, why I wasn't mad in RoS when Rey uses Force Healing...it's in a GBA prequel trilogy game XD)
Im serious when I say these videos give me life my dude. It might take me a bit to finish them but I love rewatching your videos
That's cool to hear my friend. I love making them (although they can be stress inducing and insanely challenging at times) so it's nice to see people sharing that same love!
Fate of Atlantis was such a wonderful experience of my youth. I love that game so much.
I think it really holds up too! Not many 90s point and clicks are still as playable or funny!
I remember my dad playing emperor's tomb and making me watch. My friend had infernal machine on his computer and that's how I got to know about the two 3d indiana jones games. My dad also knew about fate of atlantis but didn't play it I believe. When the lego indiana jones game came to wii I fell in love with it, because finally I got to play an indiana jones game myself, not having to watch anymore lmao.
That's like such a dual sided thing - cool dad for showing you all these awesome games but also bad dad for not letting you play!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Haha yeah, I guess he was afraid I'd screw over his save or something since I didn't understand them too well when I was young, and I do believe that the emperor's tomb had a weird way of loading the game.
Yars Revenge is such amazing game
Watching this after the Bethesda announcement.
Let's hope the new one turns out alright!
As a 80's baby, I can say I had no idea there were so many Indy games. After watching your retrospective... No wonder I missed them, that might have been a conscious effort.
It's honestly depressing how few good games our archaeological hero has! He really deserves more!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I have a limited hope for this new one. The only saving grace is it is coming from MachineGames.
This has been my most anticipated video
I hope you enjoyed it my friend! It was a nightmare edit as we had a huge heatwave here in the UK so I'm just happy it's out there!
@@IFinishedAVideoGameNo doubt! My gf is from there and she’s been telling me. Well wishes to y’all there! Fantastic job on this video as always man.
Fingers crossed for the revival of Indy’s videogames
Hopefully we hear something from Machine Games sooner rather than later!
I knew George Lucas was one of the first people of the film industry to see the potential of video games but i didn't know Lucasarts started so early with the Atari.
It's pretty crazy isn't it. He gets a lot of flak but young George genuinely was a pioneer! Even Pixar began life as a sub division of early LucasFilm!
As a hardcore classic Tomb Raider fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Infernal Machine and Emperor's tomb. They were just another Tomb Raider game to me to be honest.
In the Infernal Machine, there is a cheat code were you can play as Guybrush, and then when you fire the rockets, they come out as floating rubber chickens with music playing.
I only played the PC versions and I loved every minute of them.
Yeah there were another couple of funky things about Infernal Machine I wanted to talk about but I ended up editing it down to just the main story as it was over 30mins long!
Gotta be honest, Greatest Adventures looks like a Castlevania re-skin
I'm not sure which Castlevania game! The CV4 on the SNES looks crazy different to greatest adventures which has a really chunky sprite look!
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Super Castlevania or something similiar
A must impressive work done here !!!!
Loved how you presented all the Indiana Jones games with respectfull reviews and explainings of the game mechanics. Very professional!
Indeed a A complete History of Indiana Jones video games. Thumbs Up!
Thanks very much! I always try to be really fair with the games although I feel like this video ended up a little negative. There is a surprising amount of tosh games in Indy's history!
1:41:54 That whip is true jank. Genuinely curious how this was allowed into the final game. The fact that multiple people sat around and agreed with using that in the finished product is simply amazing
It honestly feels so much worse than it looks. It's one of the worst combat mechanics I've ever seen!
To be fair, Emperor's Tomb stealth sections are very forgiving. To the point I wouldn't even call them as such beyond the level that introduces the alarm mechanic. Especially when compared to the mandatory stealth moments in contemporary games like Jedi Outcast, the one in that game is indeed a nightmare. We also get to disguise ourselves in order to go unnoticed, which is a classic Indy trope.
That said, great video. I enjoyed listening to your analysis of each game and you convinced me to give the Last Crusade's adaptation a try.
I think you make a fair point but I just think the combination of repetitive objectives, boring environments and really half baked mechanics make it the worst part of the game. It's a real step down from how fun Istanbul and Prague are!
Regardless - thanks very much for your kind comment! I hope you enjoy Last Crusade!
I actually really love Fate of Atlantis, Infernal Machine, and Emperor's Tomb. And Lego IJ is a great companion to the trilogy. I hope there will be a new game coming soon that will do IJ justice 👍
Let's hope the Machine Games title is good! Although it is somewhat worrying that we haven't seen anything about it in years
@@IFinishedAVideoGame Indeed, I hope it doesn't end up like the Staff of Kings. There was some information June this year, namely that it won't be coming to PS5, and there was an interview with Todd Howard claiming it's halfway through development. Let's see where it goes!
