When I was young, in the “Olden days”. We had neighbors from England. Mom Was Mrs R’s go to for maneuvering through American grocery stores and cooking terms. In return, we were taught to make a Christmas trifle. But a steamed pudding was something we never saw, so my parents were completely clueless as to what I was doing, when I made this for their last visit. We are very talkative around the dinner table, and in all my substantial days, only three dishes have ever silenced them. The food in a local Scandinavian restaurant, Sticky Toffee pudding, and this dish. They were stunned, both when it slid out of the pudding dish, and upon tasting. They loved it. We joke that they come here frequently to watch our cable, but Dad is going to be hinting for this, the rest of his life! So that means even more visits; always a good thing. Thanks!!😊 (We used Apricot jam.)
Oh dear oh dear oh dear.! I truly wish this was more difficult to make so I wasn't tempted. I love these 'retro' recipes. Takes me back to when I was in short trousers with a catapult in one of the pockets.
Luverly! Other countries used to say that British food was terrible, but few of them could match us when it came to roasting meat & making steamed puddings. A good syrup or jam pudding was a real highlight in the week growing up in the 70's . especially coming from Angus where we grow the best berries in the world. Fresh homemade raspberry jam slathered over a steamed pud cheered you up no matter how driech the day had been. I could almost smell that hot syrup & jam through my computer screen, many thanks for putting me in mind to make one over the weekend.
I've never had steamed pudding, but this looks delicious and your comment made me want to try it even more. It's been 40 years since I ate pancakes with my grandmother's heavenly strawberry jam but I can still remember the taste.😋
@@karinberonius8799 One of my Aunties was an amazing baker. Even if you dropped round unexpectedly in what seemed like the time to boil the kettle she'd have a massive batch of drop scones [Scotch pancakes] freshly made to go with it. Still warm so the butter melted into them & homemade jam too. Plus there would be a big bag of fresh baked things to take back home too. Never had better pancakes, soft & fluffy. You've got me craving them now. 🥞😋
Thank you so much for such a lovely comforting recipe just perfect for this time of the year with the cold winds and 🌧. Thank you so much for your recipes and all the work you put into them. They make me feel better when everything is so topsy turvy in the world at the moment.
Looks really decadent. Will try using Rose's Lime Marmalade a favorite, just to take away some of the sweetness and adding a bit ot tartness. G'day from Down Under.
Just the recipe I need. So cold here right now and I want to steam a pudding to warm up the house and to warm up my heart. Haven't got any strawberry jam but I made spicy homemade applesauce last week, and I'm sure that will be so good instead. Gonna get cooking. Thanks for the inspiration!
Good morning Cheryl I loved your steamed pudding recipe with the jam, it really looks extremely excellent steamed retro pudding which is just so lovely I bet it tasted wonderfully excellent Cheryl love Andrea xxxxxxxxx
Gosh Cheryl, that looks absolutely delish , reminds me of school dinner days , I have made a traditional Christmas Plum Pudding in the microwave , it took a total of 16 minutes and worked a treat , my dear late mother in law used to steam hers, in a large gas boiler contraption in an outhouse shed , amazing, lady !!!!
Hey Cheryl, looks delish! I’m going to try and adapt it for the slow cooker! That way it can cook while I’m out and when I get home it can go straight from A to B! 😂
There is something I’m curious about, as I didn’t grow up eating steamed puddings. Are leftovers eaten cold, or do you heat them up again, and how does this effect the texture? (Maybe the first question should be, ‘Are there ever any leftovers? 😆)
We used to eat leftovers cold with a bit of jam, golden syrup or warm custard. But as you say, there was seldom leftovers! My favourite auntie use to make me a sponge pudding whenever I visited her for the day or stayed for a holiday on the farm. She would also make steak and kidney puddings in a cloth (not a basin!) and rolly polly bacon puddings. You wouldn't want this sort of thing every day, but they are a real satisfying treat every now and then or on a winters day...YUMMY! Oh, and my Auntie never used an electric mixer, everything was whisked by hand. She was a slow mover and used to whisk the mixture slowly and methodically, but by golly everything turned out perfect!
I always loved those puddings. I really should try to do it myself. My only issue is SR flour. Plain all purpose is easy to get where I am. Please, could you suggest how much baking powder to add if using plain flour? Thank you. I'm looking at your pudding and dying for some. 😊💞
Hi. Found this on BBC Good Food website. To make self-raising flour add one teaspoon of baking powder to 110g plain (all purpose) flour. Hope this helps you. Enjoy the pudding! I'm going to make it soon.
Hmm... never tried a pudding like this. Could you also just warm the jam gently on the stove or is there something the microwave does in those 30 second bursts? Goodness that looks amazing Cheryl!
Looks Lovely, Cheryl. Will have to try this. Thanks for posting! I added a question: It is Impossible for me to get Lyle's syrup in the state of New Mexico. There is a liquid corn sweetener sold in the USA called Karo but; I can't stand it . It is a totally inferior product. Do you think I could substitute honey and brown sugar? Thanks.
I recently saw golden syrup in the imported aisle of the sipermarket. Two yrs ago, I wouldn't have known what it was. Do you have friends on the east coast? It was at stop n shop
Honey would probably be fine on its own. The texture might be a little different. You might be able to get your local grocery store or market to order golden syrup to stock, or order it online too.
What's the point of the syrup? Btw you should gently mix in flour before using an electric mixer. Or the flour gets thrown out. Like what happened to you. Some stand mixers have a lid to help with that. You might even be able to get one separately. Which has a hole in the middle for the whisk to go through They're made with stand mixers / hand mixers in mind
